For the past eight years the music department of New Bern High School has flourished and grown under the direction of David Walters. His service and foresight have resulted in many outstanding changes and additions in our ap- preciation and learning of music. Under his guidance the band and orchestra have set high standards of quality and have won many honors. Mr. Walters has evoked such an increased inter-- est in the musical Held that presently over a fourth of the high school student are enrolled in the music program. Mr. Walterstrepairs a broken trumpet at his work bench in his office-workshop. DEDICATIG ffffisf- '16 V DAVID L. WALTERS In 1959 as a service not only to our school, but to schools across the nation, Mr. Walters was co-author of a new book entitled The Bandsman. The Dance Band is another achieve- ment of Mr. Walters.-F or four years the Dance Band has functioned, each year growing in stat- ure and popularity. The high respect held by the students and by others of New Bernls' musical organizations is a glowing tribute to the service, leadership, and p e r s o n a l assistance of Mr. Walters. So, it is with sincerest gratitude that we dedi- cate the 1960 Bruin to Mrs. Whitley and Mr. Walters for their self-sacrifice and service to us. Page F we

MRS. STELMA WHITLEY Ever since her graduation from East Carolina College in Greenville, North Carolina, Mrs. Whitley has served as an administrator and a teacher in the public schools of eastern North Carolina. Her interests in English and history have opened up new gates of understanding and appreciation to all of her students. Mrs. Whitleyis personal qualities of sincerity, sym- pathy, and a genuine interest in our personal problems, no matter how small or large, have earned her the respect and love of us all. Aside from her daily teaching of Sophomore English and World History, Mrs. Whitley has diligently directed the selling of advertisements for the Bruin. For the past Hve years she has served as Business Adviser of the Bruin. each year being responsible for securing the needed funds to print the annual. It is Mrs. Stelma VVhitley's continuous and important leadership that financially makes the Bruin possible. Pa e Four We, the students of New Bern High School, dedicate the 1960 Bruin to Mrs. Stelma VVhitley and David Walters. These two dedicated edu- cators have contributed to many facets of our high school's activities. Both in and out of the classroom, they have devoted their time and energy to making sure that we students receive the fullest education possible. I TRODUCTIO We have chosen the influences and effects of the seasons as the theme of the 1960 BRUIN. Each season brings with it certain moods, emotions, . and activities. The playful seasons decorate the school plant in varying moods- youth- ful green and gay in spring, grey and melancholy in Winter. Although the changing seasons affect our growth and development during the school year, more permanent aspects also infiuence us. The administration, the faculty, the course of study, the school plant-these seem to hold qualities of permanency and changelessness that place them in no particular season but in the perspective of continuing forces from year to year. Thus, the stable, enduring, almost immutable part of our school life precedes the more seasonal divisions of fall, Winter, spring, and summer.
