Page Eight , P 3 Q 'J 545252 MR. H. J. MacDONALD Superintendent Superintendent Harry 1. MacDonald, a Duke University graduate with majors in Zoology and education, was elected to his present position in 1947. Mr. MacDonald has devoted his time and energies to the progress of the New Bern City Schools, for Linder his leadership our accreditation has been strengthened, our cirriculum broad- ened, and our physical plants improved and broadened. In addition to his influence in the schools, Mr. MacDonald has made a significant contribution to the city through his participation in civic organizations. He is a thirty-second degree Mason, a member of the New Bern Rotary Club, New Bern Historical Society, North Carolina Educational Association, National Educational Association, North Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers, and a member of the Centenary Methodist Church. He continues now as in the past to be interested in the growth and progress of our schools. Mr. MacDonald, a gentleman with courage, vision, and wisdom, is our su- perintendent and our friend.

Spear has been the capable administrator for Dr. Spear graduated from Catawba College in 1944 with a New Bern High School. Bachelor of Arts degree. ln 1945, he began graduate work at the University of Ha- waii, later receiving his Master of Arts degree at Duke University. ln 1954, Duke University conferred the degree of Doctor of Education on him. Having come to us with such an educational background, Dr. Spear was ideally prepared to assume the triple role of leader, counselor, and disciplinarian and to discharge each duty capably.
