Q ,4 Minute flisfvry The New Bern Academy from which New Bern High School developed was estab- lished in 1764. Two years later this school was chartered by the North Carolina legislature with the approval of King George III, of England. Thus the school of which New Bern High School is successor became the first chartered school in North Carolina and the second so chartered in English colonial America. The first shool built for the New Bern Academy was completed in 1767. It was a wooden frame structure located on the present Central School Green, near the corner of New and Hancock Streets. Burned in 1795, it was replaced in 1806 by a four-classroom brick structure still in daily use. The next physical expansion of the Academy came in 1885 when the present eight room Central Building was constructed. Although recommended in 1884, it was not until 1887 that the Academy program was adjusted to permit the establishment of a separate and distinct High School con- ducted in the old Academy Building. The High School expanded into the Central Building and thence to a new building on the same site constructed in 1904 and enlarged to include eight classrooms and an auditorium in 1909. This building was fittingly dedicated to the memory of Moses Griffin, who had years before established a fund to extend the benefits of education to children theretofore denied this privilege. A new front containing four classrooms was added to the Griffin Building in 1930, which marked the end of the physical expansion of New Bern High School until the present. l' 5 T D- U BOARD OF TRUSTEES Seated john R Taylor Chairman Mrs I R Latham Mrs O A Kater II j B Simps n Standing H J MacDonald Superintendent T 1 Eubank Vice Chairman XX C Moore Treasurer I Muse McCotter Members of the Board not photographed are Mrs Rzymond Maxxx ell R XX Ipock and H G Tolson

To the Students of New Bern High School: It is a pleasure to extend to you greetings at the beginning of another school year. Year after year, high school students are told that theirs is the greatest opportunity ever. This has been the truth and will continue to be the truth just as long as we progress in the methods, materials, and facilities of learning. Your opportunities through education have an entirely new and expanded horizon. You are the beneficiaries of the past that has made your school a good school. You have the marvelous opportunity of getting more from your high school than any that have preceded you. Yours is the obligation to raise new standards so that those who follow you may progress even further. I urge you to make the most of your opportunities and accept your obligation to the future students of New Bern High as a credit to yourselves and an honor to your school. With sincere good wishes to each of you, I am Cordially yours, aw-he H. J. MacDONALD Superintendent
