SENTIMENNIZ J0llRNf7 Whlle on the way to the Metropolltan Opcra House ln a Crosley cab drlven bv John Hargett to hear Cllfton Cayton the world renown tenor who had stopped on one of h1s numerous tours I heard a speclal news flash on the radxo by the world famous commentator Harry Shrlver announclng the 11th Annual Home comlng Dance for the Class of 1950 After selectmg Laurence Tlbbett one of Cllftons understudles to plnch h1t I xmmedlately called Pat Talbot receptlonlst at the Floyd Taylor AIFIIHBS Inc for reservat1ons to New Bern N C Whlle r1d1ng down Broadway enroute to the alrport we stopped for cokes at Skmners Soda Shop and lnformed Herman Harrlson the manager and Mark of the reunlon In the soda shop we watched Mlckey Gunnersen perform her ballet dances on a televlslon screen newly revlsed by Houston Whltty The program was 1nterrupted by another news bulletm announclng that Jlmmy Brown and Ed H111 coaches of the Duke Blue Devlls had already arrlved at N B After arr1v1ng at the alrport we boarded the plane plloted bv Floyd and were made com fortable by Jean Plerce our Hostess Because we were late 1n gettmg started we changed plans and made up for lost tune ln a Hoke Jet deslgned by our own pretty boy Forney Our first stop was Washlngton D C where we plcked up June Boyd the Admlral s wlfe and Senator Swmdell Clucky Hardy he s really gone places smce leavmg ole N B H S J As we were leavlng for the alrport we met Sara Blaylock a modern Hedda Hopper hurrymg to get her SOCl6ty column to Conme Ormsby edltor of the Washmgton Ga ette They Jomed us and we contmued on our Journex We arrlved ln Norfolk Va and were escorted from the a1rport to town by Glenn Eure the motorcycle cop He took us to the De Paul Hosp1tal where we plcked up the nurses Betty and Teresa McSorley and the dent1st John Bengel Whlle there we recexved a cable efficlently carrled by Harold Jones 1nform1ng us that Carolyn L1verman manufacturer of W1l11es the newest model Hudsons was dr1v1ng down from Detrolt Wlth Jane Jordon the famous fashion des1gner and Carleen Chalk Metro Goldwyn Mayer s ha1r styllst Another of our stops was 1n Suffolk where we found Bobby Sasser owner manager and star salesman of the clothlng store Sasser and Co In h1S employment he has Adalr Grant Asst Manager and Tommy Lyerly wlndow dresser To pxck up Rex W111lHmS the manager of the comb1ned o1l companles of the natlon w stopped ln Ellzabeth Cxty Whlle there we VlSlt9d the hlgh school and attended a concert of the school band under the d1rect1on of Bob McIntyre In Ashcvllle we were greeted by George Carbcrrv proprletor of thc local rest home and Barbara Bennmghoff doctor of the cstabllshment Our conversatxon was 1nterrupted by the rlnglng of the telephone and the report from the operator Peggy H111 that Jack Carden ma3or league baseball player had arrlved ln the fa1r clty wlth h1s better half Peggy Lee As we drew nearer to the old homestead another flash came oxer the short wave radlo announclng that Betty Jean Harrls II and Ann Ipock famous society women ID the theatrlcal world were arrxvlng ln thelr own prlvate plane We arrlved 1n Charlotte m a matter of m1nutes and plcked up Ben G1ll1ken chlef englneer for the Duke Power Company tHes gone a long wav from Fagan s hasnt he J Near Charlotte at Davldson College we secured Rlchard Banks professor of Mathemat1cs From Davidson we journeyed to Monroe and found Sldney Epperson st1ll smglng bass Another flash brought to our attentlon the fact that Jean Campen teacher at Mars H111 had arrlved for the get together We ventured further and arrlved ln Fayettev1lle where we found Joe Jones owner of Jones Truck L1ne changlng a t1re Joe has 1n h1s employment Ella Koonce secretary Allce Conners recept1on1st John Scurlock body des1gner and Alton Lamn chlef truck washer In Ralelgh we were met at the alrport by Clty Manager Cralg Barnhardt and learned that Robert Ewell ran the plcture projector at the Ambassador Theater Betty H1gglhS IS chlef popcorn g1rl We also found that Fred Taylor was coachlng football at State and the former Shlrley Salter IS there also coachlnff glrls basketball In order to get 1nto the mam part of town we boarded a bus drlven by John Norris Whlle at the Capltol we saw Georgia Moore playmg her ukclelc She had Just returned to thc states from Hawau After eating lunch at the M 81 E Restaurant Jomtly owned and operated DV Mary Posta and EHFICO Hamllton where Gene Wallace IS chef and Zllda Small head waltress we returned dgalll 26 - - .
