ON THE WAY TO GRADUATION... “Senioritis” — (Se-nyer-i-tis), n. — a physical and or mental state that affects all twelfth grade students and usually occurs between the months of Feb. and May. Symptoms include laziness, forgetfulness, lateness, sleepi- ness and happiness. You may not be able to find this word in the dictionary, but that doesn’t make it any less a part of senior year. All seniors can relate to the definition and are guilty of at least some, if not all of the symptoms. What exactly happens to us between the months of Feb. and May? The change is a significant and obvious one. The only conflict is to what extent are we willing to let it affect us? The following are named symptoms as well as some examples of them. laziness — Affects majority of seniors, especially concerning homework, writing college essays or not fully concentrating during class. forgetfulness — Includes forgetting to meet important deadlines, forgetting about tomorrow’s test, and conveniently forgetting about writing that term paper! tardiness — Once in a while, seniors may find it nearly impossible to get out of bed on time for school. Pity on all A period teachers experiencing this problem in their classrooms. Promptness becomes a much less important value. sleepiness — Is tied in with all named symptoms. It not only causes tardiness, forgetfulness and laziness, it is the one inevitable symptom striking all seniors. Unfortunately, it occurs at the most inconvenient time. (It should be noted that sleepiness is an inexcusable reason for tardiness according to most teachers.) happiness — When seniors are not feeling lazy, being tardy, or sleeping they usually are in an euphoric state of happiness. The feeling that the world is theirs and they will never grow old is a common one shared among seniors. They have earned the happiness for which they worked so hard. It’s a long four years, but looking back the accomplishments will reward seniors endless- ly. Graduation is what seniors have come to accept as the end of our High School years and the beginning of a new life with new goals to be set and accomplished. Happiness affects seniors in all ways, even allowing some the chance to mature and grow as individuals! —-Dionne Pepin Seniors 25
