New Experiences in a New Land for our “Visiting Seniors” Osmane’s year was filled with many surprises. He found it difficult to adjust at first to the environment. “The difference between the way of life here and my country (Brazil) is not that big. The biggest difference; however, is the weather. It is really cold here, but it is nice and warm in my country.” He also feels that the people of America are too conservative, citing the fact that in Brazil teachers are called by their first names. When asked what he likes best about America, he picked out skiing and girls! Osmane also stated that he likes the club activities after school. In Brazil after-school activities are non-existent. Another major difference is the absence of a drinking age in Brazil which allows him to go to the pubs to sit and talk to his friends. When asked what he will do after NBHS, he expressed an interest in going into public relations work. Osmane B. Alves Jr. Av: Rio Branco 1234 Apt. 201 Praia do Canto Vitoria E.S. 29000 Brasil OSMANE B. ALVES, JR. 101 Park St. N. B. 02740 “Ozzy” (July 22) Special thanks to host Dad for being terrific. Enjoyed skiing, chorus friendly people. Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Pereira great. Would like to visit Hollywood or be in the tropics with Cybil Shepard. Lydia found it a little difficult to adjust to NBHS, but since she knew how to speak some English, it helped her to speak to Americans. When asked about her school in Spain compared to NBHS, she replied, “There are no different levels, and everyone takes the same courses. Chemistry, philosophy and Spanish are all mandatory courses. If someone does not pass any of these courses, they must repeat its She didn’t find it too difficult to make new friends here, but she misses her friends in Spain. At home she goes to parties and cafes for fun with her good friends. She said she truly loved the experience of being a foreign exchange student for a year, but is also anxious to get back to her family and friends. She hopes to attend college after leaving NBHS and to major in languages. Lydia Galdamez c o San Francisco Javier, 11 Bunuel (Navarra) Spain LYDIA GALDAMEZ 80 Washington St. N.B. 02740 “Lydia” (Jan. 1) Enjoyed studio art, French the Foreign Language Club. Will remember friends made at NBHS. Thanks Mr. Mrs. Morgan, her family Eve. To become an interpreter travel world-wide. Hanke feels that life in America compared to life in the Netherlands is fast-paced, and the people are always in a hurry to get somewhere. She says, “Here, you need a car to go anywhere, but back home, everyone uses bicycles because everything is so close to one another. She found it no problem to make friends and says that people are friendly and helpful. Hanke had no difficulty adjusting, and speaking English came easily except for a few words which were a problem. She commented on the fact that in the Netherlands, the schools do not have different levels in the same school, but rather have different schools for different levels. At home she goes to clubs, parties and plays sports for fun. She misses her brother most of all, but she enjoyed making new friends here. She plans to return home and either attend college or travel to France for one year. She further stated that she would like to return to America some time in the future since she enjoyed it so much. Hanke Grutterink Trompstraat 9 7482 CW Yaaksberten, Holland NT HA NKE GRUTTERINK 24 Slocum St. Acushnet 02743 “Hank” (June 11) Special thanks to parents for letting her come to the US. “Give your smile to everyone, but your love to only one.” Depressed by losing money from Holland by operators who hang up on her!
