Its panelled front was in the likeness of a ship’s bluff bows, and the Holy Bible rested on a projecting piece of scroll work, fashioned after a ship’s fiddle- headed beak. . . Herman Melville As we embark on life’s voyage. . . ““But oh! Shipmates! on the starboard hand of every woe, there is sure delight; and higher the top of that delight, than the bottom of the woe is deep. Is not the main-truck higher than the Kelson is low? Delight is to him a far, far upward, and inward delight — who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self. Delight is to him whose strong arms yet support him, when the ship of this base treacherous world has gone down beneath him. Delight is to him, who gives no quarter in the truth, and kills, burns, and destroys all sin though he pluck it out from under the robes of Senators and Judges.”’ from Father Mapple’s sermon in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick

In gratitude to one who has touched our lives and left us better because of that touch, we the class of ’76 dedicate this book to Mr. K. Bradford Dawson. In us, he still lives. Tributes Mr. K. Bradford Dawson, a teacher of English at New Bedford High School, died tragi- cally and too young. He will be remembered as a man of boundless energy, as a teacher of great scholarship and high professionality and as a real friend to those of all generations. Mr. Charles Robinson The most outstanding facet to Brad Dawson is unquestionably his devotion to young peo- ple whether they were his own four teenagers or his students. NBHS students often sought him out in his homeroom, during passing periods and after. They knew that he would not only listen but also that. he would care. They shared a few laughs during the course of busy days. After his sudden death, it was my sad duty to set aside for his family Mr. Dawson's per- sonal books and papers. This provided fresh insight into his personality. Mr. Dawson was a religious and thoughtful man. He had recently developed a mini-course in the Bible with which he was thoroughly familiar. His own poems and those of cherished writers reflected his convictions and indicated the hopes for the students in his popular Creative Writing classes. Brad Dawson, the teacher, was also a student of life and of the forces that shape every one of us. Mrs. Regina Keightley
