SOUTHWORTH Clifton M. Southworth began his services to the New Bedford School System back on June 10, 1938. Mr. Southworth graduated from Fitchburg College over forty years ago and he went on to obtain his B.S. and M.A. from Boston University. His first teaching assignment was at Roosevelt Junior High School. In 1941 he moved on to New Bedford High School. He entered the United States Navy soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was on active duty in the Navy for fourteen years. After his return he was appointed Assistant Principal at New Bedford High School, a position he held from 1956 to 1972. Although he was the object of much teasing about his nautical leanings, Mr. Southworth truly is the recipient of much affection and respect from both faculty and stu- dents. One could always count on him for a sympathetic ear and an understanding heart. Always the captain on his own quarterdeck, he was nevertheless one of us when rooting for the teams at all our games, and he never missed a school social function. We are sure that Mr. Southworth will always be with us in spirit and we shall in turn remember him with warmth and gratitude. Robert Leo McCarthy began service as the Tan House- master on January 29, 1973. Mr. McCarthy is a graduate of Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in Science and Business Administration. He also has a master’s degree from Bridgewater State College and has studied at New York University and the University of Massachu- setts. Mr. McCarthy was first associated with New Bed- ford High School as the founder of the Distributive Edu- cation program. He left to become assistant principal of Hastings Junior High School in Fairhaven and was ap- pointed a housemaster at New Bedford High on Decem- ber 12, 1972. 102 FACULTY GAME TRY YOUR LUCK ON THIS MATCHING GAME! 1. ‘Well, Claire, let’s send him home H.P.C. style.”’ 2. ‘‘| know I’m short, but the girls love my body.” 3. “I’m just a big pussycat.” 4. “Did you get his temperature?” “But all | wanted was some Klee- nex!” 5. “Don’t tell anybody, buster, but | think your mouth is open!”’ 6. John Pacheco Baseball Coach, NBH VISITOR 1S TIME +---+------ CHEERLEADERS TOP: Diane Costa. SECOND ROW — (L TO R): Rose Opodza, Meredith Corson. THIRD ROW — (L TO R): Diane Fortes, Debbie Mello, Geraldine Fortes. FOURTH ROW — (L TO R): Rendi Halber- stadt, Kris Ainsley, Debbie Mello, Cindy Santos. FIFTH ROW — (L TO R): Ginger White, Carol Kennedy. If you’ve ever gone to a rally or to any sort of high school game you have probably felt the electricity that the cheerleaders generate with every move. Two of the cheerleaders attend- ed a cheerleaders’ camp this past summer and brought back many new ideas. These ideas have mellowed into the cheers and routines we, the stu- dent body, enjoy seeing and hearing. The pride these girls have taken in their school has been an example for the rest of us. No matter what the conditions (rain, sleet, snow or dead of night) they’re out there cheering their teams on. There are four seniors on the squad: Head Cheerleader Diane Fortes, Rendi Halberstadt, Debbie Mello, and Ginger White. They have jumped their last leap and yelled their last cheer for NBH. MAJORETTES FRONT ROW — (L TO R): Sue Luce, Doreen Williams, Donna Andrade, Mary Ellen Malone, Sharon Lourenco. BACK ROW — (L TO R): Baunie Jones, Debbie Mullin, Sue Mullin, Sandy Fer- nandes, Judy Pacheco, Pat Petty, Wendy Warrington. When you go to a foot- ball game and see a silver object floating through the air, you know it must have come from the hands of one of the NBH majorettes. These girls have practiced for many long hours and the prod- uct of their work is shown in the beauty and preci- sion of their routines. They have become an integral part of the rallies and games. Their preci- sion is like a Swiss watch which depends on every- one singularly to perform as a unit. The batons that will be retired this year belong to Head Majorette Sandra Fernandes and Donna Andrade. CROSS-COUNTRY peer, av cmE: or ? ae Yemy “aE Sa) FIRST ROW — (L TO R) Charles Gomes, Tony Monteiro, Jan Pina, Rod Rodrigues, and Robert Simmons. SECOND ROW — (L TO R) Ed Mulvey, David Chadwick, John DePina, Robert Britto, Ed McAloon, Len Gifford, Peter Gonzalez, Armond Enos, and Coach Ralph Perry. This year has been one of rebuilding for the NBHS cross-country team. Due to 1972’s gradua- tion we lost some good runners, but with Coach Ralph Perry’s experience and discipline, this year’s men should be able to compete with any team in the state. The seniors who will be running their last and best season for NBH are: Peter Gonzalez, Ar- mond Enos, Len Gifford, David Chadwick, John DePina, Robert Britto, Ed McAloon and Ed Mulvey. gPER of OF % WETIUES a) WINTER TRACK FIRST ROW — (L TO R): Paul Nichols, Paul Jellison, Ed McAloon, John DePina, Mike Gomes, Peter Gonzalez, Bob Galipeau, Ric Lev- in, Len Gifford, Bob Correia, Bob Britto. THIRD ROW — (L TO R): Joe Prata, Mike Lobo, Bob Simmons, John Barradas, Antonio Pinho. FOURTH ROW — (L TO R): Peter Bouchard, Brian Thomasset, Joe Francis. The NBHS winter track season has been short and sweet for the 1973 squad. Track is a disciplined sport requiring a dedicated group of athletes who are willing to strive for team success and self-improvement. The team doesn’t win the meet unless each runner is willing to compete wholeheartedly. The track- men’s record was 7-1, which is evidence enough to praise both the team and Coaches Ponte and Perry. The seniors on the squad are Bob Britto, Bob Correia, John DePina, Robert Galipeau, Len Gifford, Mike Gomes, Peter Gonzalez, Paul Jellison, Ric Levin, Ed Mc- Aloon, Ed Mulvey, Paul Nichols and Chris Ramos. es alia. 5 i : SOCCER CENTER: Randy Rossi (73). This year frustration came hand in hand with the will to win. Coach Bob Parker’s team had to overcome their inexperience with hard work and long hours of prac- tice. The boys wanted and did go all out in their defense of the New England Championship. Coach Parker struggled to get enough games, so that his team would have the opportunity to qualify for tournament play. The soccer team did qualify by win- ning their last regular season game. In the Eastern Mass. Tournament, the boys made their way to the finals, where they lost a heartbreaking game to Needham by the score of 1-0. Two seniors were the leaders of the 1973 squad. Gabe Da- Silva gave the team inspiration while Bruce Botelho lead all scorers. However, they weren't the only two stars on the team; each player was a star in his own right. This is one of the many tributes which can be given to the 1973 NBH soccer team. y if ¥ @s.nm FOOTBALL Varsity Team, FRONT ROW — (L TO R): Andrew Greene, Mark Reedy, Joe Bettencourt, Edwin Mello, Paul Jellison, Capt. BACK ROW — (L TO R): Mark Sullivan, Donald Dubreuil, Daniel Correia, Mike Gomes, Bruce McMann, Ronald Huston, Richard O’Berry, Dave Cordeira, Mark Nooth, John Inacio, Thomas Goodine, Fred Izyk, Mark Pires. Football is much more than a contact sport or just a physical game. A player has to be at the peak of his mental and physical capabili- ties. He also has to be willing to sac- rifice personal interest to stay in top notch condition. If this is the sign of a good football player then NBH was blessed with quite a team. This year the football team paid a tough price for recognition. Captain Dave Reynolds was lost for the sea- son after the third game with a knee injury. Although there were many things which could have set the squad back, the boys kept their momentum going out of sheer will power. They had to show those who doubted that they could win football games against teams who are in the same class as themselves. They lost the traditional Turkey Day game to Durfee and ended the year with the respectable record of five wins, three losses, and no ties. Senior Group, FRONT ROW — (L TO R): Edwin Mello, Leonard Aguiar, Andrew Greene, Paul Jellison, Donn Cordeira, Robert Galipeau, Wayne Thomas. The man featured in these pictures has been a guiding beacon to many fine young men, past and present, who have dedicated themselves to the spartan-type existence of a football player. He is the retiring head football coach, Joseph Bettencourt. The man’s leadership qualities will sorely be missed in the years to come. Through his hard work, many of his ex-players have been able to further their education through scholarships and grants. Many of these players would not have been able to attend the college of their choice without his help. A further tribute to this man is his record. During his eight years, he has amassed a record of 45 victories, 21 defeats and two ties. This is truly the mark of a fine leader. We are very pleased that he will remain on as athletic director. All we can say, Joseph Bet- tencourt, is, ‘Don’t wander too far, in case we need you.” New Bedford High School Coaching Staff, FRONT ROW — (L TO R): Tom Giasson, Head Coach Joe Bettencourt, Richard Kehoe. BACK ROW — (L TO R): Coach and Trainer Gene Savard, Butch Fermino. 170 BASKETBALL FIRST ROW — (L TO R): David Sylvia, Armond Enos, Ray Houtman, Joseph Antone and David Grimes. SECOND ROW — (L TO R); Greg Parker, Mike Bobrowiecki, David Pontes, Steven Ramos, Dan Rosa, Greg Lima and Wayne Thomas. The two leaders of the basketball squad were the co-captains, Steve Ramos and Armond Enos. Ramos was the only returner from last year’s starting five and proved to be the backbone of the team. Enos was the backcourt general. He brought the ball down court, set up plays and participated in much of the scoring. The class of 1973 is repre- sented by Armond Enos, David Grimes, Ray Houtman, David Pontes and Steve Ramos. Coach Sal Lombardo considered this year’s basketball schedule to be one of the toughest NBH has had to face in many years. This difficulty is shown by the team’s record. It isn’t a winning one. A record, however, doesn’t really tell the true story. It doesn’t tell you about the heartache when you lose by a close score or when you go all out and end up los- ing in front of a home crowd. Excus- es for a losing season are a loser’s way out. That’s why you won’t see any listed here. We should be proud of these guys; they tried their hardest. ah ore ine FIRST ROW = (L TO R): Rich Harriman, Mike Gonneville, Bill Theodore, Larry Bywell, Billy Sylvia, Dave Bergeron, Dave Sylvia, Glenn Ferreira, Mark Laubenstein, Dave Hutchinson. Roy, Dave Cordeir- a, Peter Mello, Mike Sullivan, Mark This year our school entered into a new sports field, ice hockey. The boys put on their paddings, uni- forms and helmets and took to the ice at the Moby Dick Arena. Hockey may seem an easy sport to the spec- tator but it’s much more difficult than it appears to be. It involves the timing and precision of a figure ska- ter, the stamina ard strength of a football player and most important, the ability to control and get the defenseless little puck into the op- posing team’s net. Being checked along the boards, being tripped up by the enemy and being slashed with a hockey stick are just some of the side benefits for the young hockey players. The NBH hockey team is a good, young squad which is dominated by underclassmen. These boys get up about two hours earlier than most students on two days of the week to get in a little ice time before school. That’s dedication. They normally play on Mondays along with seven other teams in the Bristol County League. At the time of this writing, the team is 5-2, 4 points behind div- ision-leading Somerset (on the basis, 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie). For its first year in history as a NBHS hockey team, these guys and Coaches McBain and Roy are to be congratulated on a commend- able showing.
