IN MEMORIAM ALLISON R. DORMAN 1938-1949 Principal of New Bedford High School b. 1879 — d. 1971 ALLISON R. DORMAN, THE MAN, THE TEACHER, THE PRINCIPAL EMERITUS: Mr. Dorman was a prominent figure in educational circles during the 1920's, 1930's and 1940’s. After mandatory retirement, he became a Representative to the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massa- chusetts and with the stamina of men twenty years younger, he represented his section of New Bedford daily with untiring vigor. This vigor which permeated all his life stemmed from the beginnings which placed him among the ones who played the first basketball games in not only Massachusetts but in the United States. He kept in constant physical condition by acting as a referee, by coaching high school teams while constantly his long lean frame was seen striding through the corridors of New Bedford High School ... always “on duty’’. This was a man who was respected by his students, admired by his faculty, when he was head of the Busi- ness Education Department, and then when he was Principal of New Bedford High School. Perhaps, in this day some of his policies might be questioned, but they would be questioned only by those whose abilities were not able to reach the heights he demanded. He was always accessible for a chat about a problem, every week he personally brought you your pay check and had a moment to chat with you, while every player, first team or second, was known to him by his first name. He was truly Principal Emeritus ... and | consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to have been one of the teacners un his raculty. Dr. James R. Hayden Superintendent of Schools 740)
