When he sat behind the desk, all you could see was the top of his crewcut. — If I don’t get some kind of deferment, I guess Ill leave the country. — When I handed him my note, he said that he didn’t believe I was sick. So I coughed in his face. — The only time I feel that I’m accomplishing some- thing is when I’m playing sports. — I didn’t know any of the kids on the election ballot, so I voted for the one who had the most a’s in his name. — Have you heard from any schools yet? — Hey ... don’t be shy with your paper. — Will all the teachers please send down a list of stu- dents who were out of the classroom prior to the pre- vious fire drill. — | left it in my other notebook. — No veg. — What beep? I just raised my hand when all the oth- er kids did. — It took me three years to realize that marks aren’t worth a damn. — Every time I walk by the draft board, I remember that I didn’t sign up. — Becoming eighteen only means that I can legally drive after 1 A.M. — D’you ever try to go to the john with a busted arm? No way. — I think I have every book of Cliff Notes that was ever written. — I dropped my plate and everyone started applauding. — If you skip on Friday the teacher usually forgets by Monday. — It’s not that I’m self-conscious or anything like that; I just look funny with my glasses on. — I thought it didn’t smell like a cigarette. — Please disregard t he bells. — I opened the door to the girl’s room, and it was like one giant puff of smoke. — Is that gum on your elbow? — I cheat by writing tiny notes on my book cover, and then leaving the book on my desk during the test. — I’m not paying fifty cents for a lousy test tube. — What periods do we skip? — The bell rings and we move like a huge flock of obedient sheep. — Doesn't anyone else know these cheers? — I just found out that we’re having a surprise quiz in chemistry. — I’m afraid of losing the security of high school. — Positive ID Required. — Aardvark, seat number one. Albino, seat number two. — It makes me feel great when people get lower grades than me. — Do you boys have permission? — After you memorize the 629 theorems, geometry’s not so bad. — Your homework tonight is to review for the test. — Marching in the band is okay, if you don’t mind having chipped teeth. — At first she slapped me; later she thanked me. — I just don’t have the time to join any clubs. — The days that I have my homework, she doesn’t collect it. — At least your acne is on your back, where it doesn’t show as much. —...andI don’t want any excuses. — What d’you call a Portagee who ... — He said he was counting that test three times. — But everybody else is smoking it! — Ziblonsky, seat number forty-five. For she had much; prospered and her people had seen favor in the eves of the Lord. 2 And the people rejoiced and danced in the streets. For out of the ground hath the Lord made to grow every fruit that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food. 3 And the people forgot God; for their wealth was much. 4 And the Lord God said, Let there be a famine in the land; so that I might know if my people love me. 5 And He sent a famine throughout the land; not of food, but of knowledge. 6 And all the schools were gone; and the people were sore afraid. And there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. 7 And the king sent forth a decree, saving, Leta green schoolhouse be built on the street that is called Charles. And it was done. 8 The elders cried, The city must not supply her people with knowledge. For our Shekels are few. Yea, according to law, it is the work of parents. 9 And the rich found their words gracious, and the place of learning was no more. 10 And it came to pass in the process of time, that a new school was made on the street of the Elm. 11 And the Elm Street School begat the Middle Street School; and the Mid- dle Street School begat a school on the street that was called Summer. 12 For the people were many and, vea, the cubits were few. 13 And in the year one thousand a YJ D) b LISA ) ‘GY boven 2 é nine hundred and two, the school that was Suninier was no more. 14 And the people rent their clothes; for there was much sadness in the land. And the people made a burnt offer- ing unto the Lord. And they cried for wisdom in their time of fear. 2 And God looked down from above, and spake with a thundering voice. 3 Build ve a place of learning and call it NBHS; for ve are forgiven and shall suffer no more. 4 And the _ people exceedingly. 5 And a feast was made; and the meat of young bullocks, rams, and lambs of the first year was shared. And of bread and sweet wine, there was aplenty. 6 And the great school was begun; for the people were hungry for truth and knowledge. 7 Yea, the carpenters and bricklay- ers and masons and taskmasters gath- ered ona plain near the street that was called William. 8 And they said one to another, Go 10, let us make brick and let us build a school whose top may reach unto Heaven. 9 And they were cast from the city and scattered abroad; for their voice was as the sound of politicians. 10 Now the people cast lots, and the planners and the architect were chosen. Il And there was a great tumult in the city, for the school would take many rejoiced shekels and minas from the purses of the people. 12 And the mouths of the people were filled with arguments; and their words and speeches were as the wind. ) M 8 OAL) F .) a (}} 4 f ta) me ( 7) — 2 () -) CY ( RD ph 0 oe ‘a R ) re v Nites AY 4 S % A co : 2 te Ly ES AG (U 7, (ere Z) ¢ Brie cae 4 2 CO 2D Js. ; S yy, c 13 And one cried, The debt shall be too great. 14 Another cried, Let us build a house of manual training. 15 Yet another cried, Let it teach the arts of the household. 16 For these were the laws of the land they said, though the people had pronounced them unclean. 17 And many cried, Let the school be of many cubits; for our children are as the grains of sand on East Beach. 18 And the words of many were as fire, saying, Let there be a place in the school where bread and honey might be shared. Let there be tabernacles of sci- ence and rooms where young warriors may be trained. 19 For th ere had been none of these. 20 And the fool said, My wealth is vast and, yea, my knowledge is not from the place which ye call school. And he proclaimed that a school should not rise up. 21 And the king listened to the words of the people; for he was wise. 22 And he called together the elders and the scribes. And they spoke one with another. 23 And the king sent forth a decree; and the school was built. 24 And brick was brought from the East and marble from the richest king- doms of Africa. The glass was as dia- mond, and the wood from the finest young saplings. 25 And the people were exceedingly glad; for theirs was a place of beauty and of knowledge. 26 For scholars journeyed from the ends of the earth, so that they might teach in the school that was called blessed. 27 And it came to pass that as the people multiplied, the school grew in stature. “4 ‘ S C ) ¢5 6) S Bo, Q Z 4 D0 DLs is) 2 y) Peewee AY Cc Ps ooh % Cay, i, () Ms 2 Co) Y f 28 For the masons and the bricklay- ers were wise, and they added unto the school. 29 And the school was called NBHS; for the Lord God had spoken. And the love of the people was great, one unto the other. 3 And the great happiness was soon pluckt from the people. And they stretched forth their hands; for the plagues, which numbered seven, were upon the land. 4 And NBHS was plagued with the strikes of the teachers, and with food which was as the meat of frogs, and with tumbling walls, and a great multi- tude of students, and students who spake with uncircumcised lips, and rob- bers and evildoers, and teachers whose minds were sealed as tombs. 5 And the king said, Let a new school be built; for the destruction of NBHS is at hand. 6 And the people were of one accord; and the building of the school was begun. 7 And, yea, NBHS was abandoned. For the people had forgotten the joy they had shared therein. 8 Yea, a spirit hath not flesh nor bones, neither hath it wood nor marble. DORMAN 1938-1949 Principal of New Bedford High School b. 1879 — d. 1971 ALLISON R. DORMAN, THE MAN, THE TEACHER, THE PRINCIPAL EMERITUS: Mr. Dorman was a prominent figure in educational circles during the 1920's, 1930's and 1940’s. After mandatory retirement, he became a Representative to the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massa- chusetts and with the stamina of men twenty years younger, he represented his section of New Bedford daily with untiring vigor. This vigor which permeated all his life stemmed from the beginnings which placed him among the ones who played the first basketball games in not only Massachusetts but in the United States. He kept in constant physical condition by acting as a referee, by coaching high school teams while constantly his long lean frame was seen striding through the corridors of New Bedford High School ... always “on duty’’. This was a man who was respected by his students, admired by his faculty, when he was head of the Busi- ness Education Department, and then when he was Principal of New Bedford High School. Perhaps, in this day some of his policies might be questioned, but they would be questioned only by those whose abilities were not able to reach the heights he demanded. He was always accessible for a chat about a problem, every week he personally brought you your pay check and had a moment to chat with you, while every player, first team or second, was known to him by his first name. DUMPS DURFEE, CATCHES 2nd PLACE The N.B.H. ‘‘11’’ ended this season’s campaign with a noteworthy 6-1-1 performance. This record gave the Crimson 2nd berth in the Bristol County League, finishing just behind Attleboro (7-1). In its 8 fall contests, the Whalers defeated Bishop Stang, Coyle, Taunton, N.B. Vocational, Chicopee Com- merce, and Durfee. They succumbed only once — this to Attleboro — and tied Bishop Feehan in their other encounters. The season was brought to a climax with a convinc- ing 21-8 victory over Durfee High in the Thanksgiving Day battle. This classic traditionally played on Thurs- day, was very untraditionally played on a Saturday due to inclement weather. Much credit should be given to Coach Joe Betten- court and his representatives on the field of battle for their fine efforts. All too often, the spectator merely sees the boys’ polished performances in an actual con- test. One must remember, however, that many hours of stances, starts, blocking, tackling, and agility drills went into molding this successful ball club. Football, as a contact sport, truly supports the idea — “Athletics is the equalizer among all’’. On the foot- ball field no political tactics may be applied. The situ- ation may be simplified to the following: the team with the greater talent and desire is the team which eventually triumphs. Moreover, many observers feel — “Next to war, football is the toughest thing!”’ !st ROW — Bob Bergeron, Ed Oliver, Marshall Lee, Joe Loria, Ray Michalski, Ricky Zipp, Art Tremblay, Ron O’Berry. 2nd ROW Michael Henry (manager), Ed Zipp, Bob Olejarz, Art Daigle, Lee Harriman (co-captain), Mike Oliviera (co-captain), John Seed, Carly Mendes (manager). 3rd ROW — Ron Teachman, Mike Gomes, Dave Reynolds, Mike McCann, Ed Mello, Tom Goodine, Richard O’Berry, Dave Bixler. 4th ROW — Donald Gomes, Mark Reedy, John Inacio, Andy Greene. 170 se EE Ss zat PP Pecwiae SBR RI ° TRE AEROS A OAT 171 174 SOCCER CRIMSON KICKERS SNATCH NEW ENGLAND CROWN ‘ Pride, Respect, and Loyalty’? — these are the qualities Coach Bob Parker looked for team mem- bers to possess. However, Coach Parker might have included one other quality inherent in his boys, when talking with our sports staff interview- er. Undoubtedly, it was the N.B.H. Booters’ ability to Win! The invincible ‘““Crimson Machine” compiled an eye-opening 25-0-0 season. They won 18 games in league play and 7 others in tournament contests. These impressive statistics all contributed to New Bedford High’s successful quest for its first New England soccer title. Although the team was truly awesome with its depth of talent, the going was not ‘‘all downhill” for our band of booters. At one point in the sched- ule, the team was forced to play 10 games, span- ning 17 days. Because the state tourney com- menced November |, the Crimso n were simultane- ously playing their regular season circuit which did not terminate until November 12! Moreover, many hours of practice — heading, trapping, passing, and shooting into the net — were expended in mak- ing our soccer unit a solid contender this year. At this time, we, the ‘“‘Crimson Log”’ staff, would like to extend our sincerest congratulations in behalf of the entire school to Coach Bob Parker and his “‘kicky”’ kids for their fine efforts. MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH This year’s N.B.H.S. cross country team recent- ly concluded their season with a respectable 4-2 mark. This record was 2nd only to Attleboro for top spot in the Southeastern Massachusetts League. New Bedford’s victims included Stang, Durfee, Coyle and Taunton. It was Attleboro, however, who assumed the role of the ‘‘spoiler” this season, beating the Crimson once in a regular season encounter and again in the Southeastern Mass. League Meet. As a consequence of this latter defeat, New Bedford High finished — guess what! — 2nd in the aforementioned meet. Cross country, as a spectator sport, is not nearly as publicized as a football or basketball clash. Nonetheless, it requires the same motivation and desire, if the participant is to excel. Coach Ralph Perry told our sports interviewer that no one who tries out for the squad is cut. Dedication is the one essential attribute which the prospective cross country candidate must possess. With practice en- tailing runs of 5 to 10 miles around the Whaling City Golf Links, there is little question as to why one must perforce be dedicated to this athletic pur- suit. For Coach Perry, ‘“‘Those who matter are those who care.” Lately, in many newspaper articles, much con- troversy has been aroused as to whether participa- tion in sports really aids in building one’s charac- ter. Perhaps no other sport supports this premise any more substantially than cross country. When running until one is able to drop, it is of the utmost necessity that the individual rely upon endurance and mental discipline in finishing out the exhaust- ing ‘“‘heats’. As the adage goes, ‘Quitters always quit and hitters always hit”! Ist ROW — LEFT TO RIGHT — Ed Mulvey, Charles Gomes, Charles Karalekas, Dave Chadwick, Tom Luckraft, Manny Silva. 2nd ROW — LEFT TO RIGHT — Len Gifford, John Alves, Richard Nichols, Keith Francis, Bob Britto, Peter Gon- zalez, Armand Enos, Bob Simmons, Coach Ralph Perry. 181 WINTER TRACK “Complete with a Chill, a Huff and a Puff” N.B.H.S. Winter Track Program ‘“Complete with a Chill, a Huff and a Puff” With but 3 meets remaining, the ’72 Winter Track Team has already “done itself proud”’ by compiling 6 victories in 7 outings. Included on this impressive list of conquests are: Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Falmouth, Barnstable, Tabor Academy, and Dennis- Yarmouth. Although the squad of 34, led by Coach Ponte and co- Captains Richard Nichols and Mike McCann, is in- stalled in no formal league as such, they find ample competition in the Southeastern Massachusetts De- velopmental Track Association. This association in- cludes teams from the nearby Capeway Conference. In regard to next year’s newly-created Southeastern Massachusetts Athletic Conference, where some peo- ple seem to feel that the high school has a supposed advantage by virtue of the large enrollment and the size of players for football competition, this argument has no validity whatsoever when applied to winter track. How can a team truly call themselves first-rate, if they are unwilling to prove equal to answering the challenges of all schools? This is especially true of win- ter track where size is not the essential attribute, but where perseverance of the individual and natural abili- ty wholly dominate. In training his charges for competitive meets, in- volving such events as the 45-yard hurdles, the 5SO-, 300-, 600-, 1000-yard, mile and 2-mile runs, and relay heats, Coach Ponte has implemented what is referred to as the “interval training” technique. Thus far, he has met with considerable success as evidenced by the team’s fine 6 to 1 record. Members of the squad run in groups against a time limit which is made constantly more demanding. On a typical day, the jocks might engage in twelve '2-mile runs, with |-minute rest peri- ods interspersed. Coach Ponte further went on to state that his runners are so dedicated to keeping their bod- ies in fine tone that they’d probably disown him if he called off any practices. One can easily believe this statement. After all, why else are we getting a new high school come September? Only because the track team has practiced so fervently on the 3rd floor for so many years that the structure is no longer safe to in- habit ... ithas become that RUN D O W N ! 1972 Winter Track Team BOTTOM ROW, L. BASKETBALL N.B.H.S. “GLOBE TROTTERS” GALLOP TOWARD STATE TITLE N.B.H.S. ‘“‘Globe-Trotters” Gallop Toward State Title The New Bedford High School basketball squad finds itself in the midst of another banner year. Thus far, the varsity is 9-1 in Bristol County League action and 11-2 for its overall efforts. Though the regular season has not ended at the time of this writing, the team’s record, as of now, is a fair indicator of how it will fare in remaining games. Although the Crimson basketeers take each of their 18 games as they come, the squad is eagerly awaiting the chance to show their prowess on a state level. To be eligible for this prestigious elimination event, a team must compile victories in 65% of its games or, hopefully in the case of New Bedford High, the team may also qualify by winning their league title. Through constant drilling and ‘‘just plain hard work”, Coach Lombardo has again molded all the available talent into a solid contending team this season. This is where a coach is so important to the squad. If a team has much individual ability but is not well-coordinated as a whole, chances are slim of a successful outcome. Coach Lombardo speaks of basketball in terms of life with its many “ups and downs’’. It’s fine when a team has a comfortable lead, be it in a game or in league standings. There’s always that instance out of the shadow of fate, however, when one is called upon to prove himself equal to the task. This moment may present itself when the ‘‘Star”’ player fouls out of an important game early in the 3rd quarter, with an un- timely injury, or a bad call by the ref. Regardless of the situation, the coach has tried to instill incentive in his players to rise to the occasion and never falter. Mr. Lombardo’s philosophy is a formidable one to fault, and his basketball team — even more so!
