TH SmlomyY OURR BILGE LOR Ye: ts “ VES f GE. Program CLASSBOOK EDITORS DEDICATION DIRECTORS STEERING COMMITTEE CAST ACTIVITIES SPORTS SUPERLATIVES WE’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN CLASS MOTTO Nil Sine Numine Nothing Without Divine Guidance ees if AF. GH We, the Class of 1954, dedicate this yearbook, as a small token of our appreciation, to one of the finest members of the New Bedford High School Faculty. Muss Blackmer’s efforts in behalf of the school paper, the Dramatic Club and especially in the YOUTH FOR AN HONEST AMERICA program, are a lasting example of her true character and record of service to New Bedford High School. To Mr. Bonner, we also dedicate this book as a lasting memento of our appreciation for all the time and effort he has given to New Bedford High School and the Class of 1954. His work with the Dramatic Club, vocal music groups and as Faculty Athletic Manager will long be remembered, and will exemplify his spirit of cooperation and devotion. It was with deep sorrow and regret that the Class of 1954 noted the untimely passing of George L. Beach on March 27, 1954. Mr. Beach served New Bedford High School faithfully for 40 years in every department except languages. It was a labor of love for Mr. Beach, as his every thought was for the improvement and betterment of the school of which he was so proud. His greatest attribute was his understanding of and cordiality toward everyone who came in contact with him. Mr. Beach was one of us—a “regular guy.” His wit and friendliness will never be forgotten. New Bedford High School has lost a friend. Operating on the principle of service to student body and faculty alike, the Student Council is one of the most active organizations in the school. Forty elected members represent the four classes.on a sliding scale of representation; the Student Court Judge and the Trafic Chief complete the roster. Financing its activities largely through the sale of soft drinks at home basketball games, the group engaged in a busy 1953-1954 schedule. Their “Youth for an Honest America” Week combined discussions in all English classes on the subject of honesty with an assembly in which the Dramatic Club presented the timely “Two Crooks and a Lady.” An informal dance was sponsored by the organization in the fall, and dancing classes for lower classmen were initiated in the spring. Its traditional Student Government Day at school in March was highlighted by a forceful talk on Communism by the Reverend Oswald A. Blumit of Wollaston, speaker at a student-conducted assembly. In addition, the Council “adopted” a family at Christmas, contributed to the Exchange Student Fund, presented gifts to retiring faculty members, conducted all school elections, and chose outstanding seniors for the Award of Merit. Delegates represented the group at Council Conventions in Plymouth and Falmouth. 1953-1954 OFFICERS President, Jeanne Bourque Secretary, Barbara Smith Vice-President, Patricia Winterson Treasurer, Ruth Winterbottom Adviser, Anna M. Yi Society Membership in Honor Society is gained through invitation. Candidates are students whose high scholastic standing entitles them to consideration, and in whom qualities of character, leadership, and service, are evident. Selection of members is made by a committee of Society officers and faculty representatives. New members are inducted at an assembly in the fall, when they receive membership certificates and cards entitling them to spend study periods in the library at their own discretion. Fifty-nine members of the Class of ’54 belong to the Society. In November, the Reverend Lex King Souter addressed the student body at the assembly sponsored by the organization. Girls ‘ oleague Girls’ Welfare League, made up of girls select ed from applicants in their senior and junior years, is an organization devoted to the service of others. In addition to their traditional activities, making tray favors for St. Luke’s Hospital patients for each holiday, helping at the City Mission on Friday afternoons, providing hostesses at the front entrance of the school throughout the week, the girls undertook this year additional projects: At Christmas, the group “adopted” a family in need of help; the members also filled the thou- sands of envelopes mailed to New Bedford residents during the annual Anti-Tuberculosis drive; one meeting was devoted to assembling kits used by workers during the Heart Fund campaign for funds; the girls also made a generous contribution toward the fund to bring a European Exchange Student to New Bedford High School next year. Socially, the Girls’ League was highlighted by a tea given for members by the Board of Directors of the City Mission, by a League picnic at the close of the year, and by the annual May Ball, at which a Queen and her court were selected. 1953-1954 OFFICERS President, Janet Liarikos Treasurer, Marilyn Wilks Vice President, Beverly Berg Welfare Chairman, Patricia Mello Secretary, Gloria Santos Adviser, Anna M. Coached by Amos Taylor and his two new assistants, Clarry Haskell and Ed Lowney, the Crimson came through with the City Championship of New Bed- ford, and conquered all but one Bristol County opponent. In the lid-lifter for the 1953 football season, the Taylormen nabbed a 12-6 victory over Barn- stable, as Don Doyon, outstanding captain of the Red and White, Al Haskell, Johnny Mc- Kenna, and Dave Roberts played a fine ball game. In a more spectacular contest, the Crimson came from behind to edge Fairhaven 19-14 and also tripped city rival New Bedford Vocational 7-0. In the latter tussle, that “little pack of dynamite” John Ramos scored the lone TD on a 35 yard jaunt. Another win appeared on the record as the Whalers gra bbed a 27-6 victory over Taun- ton with Ramos again doing most of the damage with two tallies. Defeats in the meanwhile came from Coyle 18-12, Rindge Tech 18-6, and a rugged Quincy crew 6-0. But in every Crimson schedule comes the “big one.” This of course was the traditional clash on Thanksgiving Day with Durfee. Sargeant Field was the site of action. A capacity crowd was on hand to witness the Crimsonites come through in flying Red and White colors with a 12-7 victory. Spectacular play was contributed in the last football game by most of the first eleven, but especially outstanding was Jimmy McDonald, who quarterbacked the squad tremendously all season, the running of Dave Roberts, Johnny Ramos and Johnny McKenna, and the line play of Ron DeMello, Jack Sheerin, Ted Szczur, Haskell and Doyon. The touchdowns in the contest were scored by Ramos, aided by some fine blocking, who raced 75 yards to paydirt, and end Dan Louriero on a pass play from McDonald covering 12 yards. | This game climaxed a fine season. Seniors Doyon, Haskell, DeMello, McKenna, Ramos and Szczur all played their hearts out, and will long remember the memories of the football team Of 1953. The team of 1953 expresses to the coaching staff their sincerest appreciation for their in- struction and guidance which made it possible for the boys to play for New Bedford High School. Basketball The 1953-54 hoop season was quite successful as the Crimson rang up a 13-7 regular season record. Under newly appointed coaches, Stan Grabiec and Al Palmieri, the Red and White gained an elimination berth at Brandeis University for a Tech Tourney spot, and wound up in the runnerup spot in Bristol County League competition. The most cherished victories of the season came over city rival N.B. Vocational twice, Fair- haven twice, Holy Family and Attleboro. The fiirst Voke tussle was really a thriller with the Crimson coming through in overtime 48-44. The Trade school led by 5 points with a minute left, but a spirited N.B. High comeback paid off with the win. Fairhaven was no trouble at all to the Red Raiders as the scores indicate. Durfee, on the other hand gave the Crimson a double defeat 58-46 and 49-44. The oddest contest of the season was the Attleboro battle as the Grabiec crew “FROZE” the ball the entire third period. The object, of course, was to break Coach Howie Tozier’s tight zone, but the Jeweler mentor wouldn’t give in. The first half supplied a 30-24 score while the latter two periods saw only 10 points hit the nets. ‘The final score read New Bedford 34, Attleboro 30. In the Tech Tourney elimination at Brandeis, the Crimson met a good Boston English crew, and was beaten 56-44. A quick 7 point N.B. lead was short lived as the Bostonians stormed back and nabbed the verdict with plenty to spare. Outstanding individual efforts throughout the season came from co-captains Jack Sheerin and Johnny McKenna, Aubert Dumas, Dave Hutchinson, Dick LeBlanc, and Jim McDonald. Of the six, Hutchinson will be the only returnee to the Crimson colors next year. Sheerin’s main value was his terrific rebounding while his best offensive output came against Fairhaven as the “red head” tallied 18 markers. Dumas was always a constant offensive threat as he con- tinually racked up double digits, while McDonald and McKenna proved their worth with scrappy floor games and a consistent flow of two pointers. LeBlanc, although among the missing for the first ten games, made his presence felt with his patented left hand hook shot and fine rebounding. Also a word for the play of Dave Ritchie, Jerry LeBlanc, and Joe Mello, who gave their all. Ito them we wish the best of luck next year and to Coaches Grabiec and Palmieri we express our appreciation for their guidance and instruction. WHC THE DING DONG. Gly Basketball Realizing that it was going to be a long, hard road to defend their Narragansett League title, the female Crimson hoopsters fought admirably during their 1953-54 cage season, but could only scrape out two victories out of seven tries. The four mainstays of this year’s team were Marilyn Lachapelle, Margaret Anderson, San- dra Rocha and Jane Russell. Marilyn was the individual high scorer for this year’s quintet. “wo other seniors playing their first year of basketball were Eileen Macabello and Lulu Rezendes. ‘To all these mentioned we extend our appreciation for so admirably representing N.B.H.S. on the basketball floor. BEVERLY BATES, with much embarrassment, walked into the boys’ room by mistake. GEORGE CARTRON tried to ascend and descend three flights of stairs fowr times in three minutes. The way ANNE CLARK dislikes the snail’s pace of students going up and down the stairs, ARTHUR CORMIER was stopped by three new girls and asked where the girls’ gym was. CAROL COSTA walked through six periods with the zipper of her skirt unfastened. PAT FERREIRA took the teeth out of the skelton in phys- iology. JOHN GREENE collided with PAT WINTERSON and got lipstick smears on his shirt. JOAN HEMMANN was the only girl at a special all-boys auditorium program. MARILYN JACKSON played “spin the skull” in physiology. DAWN KEGRESSE walked up the stairs in her stocking feet. LARRY WALSH’S face turned such a pretty color as he watched glass being stretched in Chem. Lab. ALDA LOPES and BARBARA FREEMAN exchanged such innocent looks when cookie crumbs were found around their desks. Wl Always eee bee When sc) ede MARGARET MALONSON was called out of class because her car was parked in back of a hearse for a policeman’s funeral. There were five ““No Parking” signs near her car. WHITMARSH stopped an Ancient History class so that everyone could help CAROL NEGUS pick up the remains of her broken string of pearls. LUCINDA REZENDES turned around and bumped into HANK QUINN’S stomach. MARILYN OLIVER gave a teacher a “friendly slap on the back” by mistake. DAWN PALMER'S chair collapsed as she was reciting An- thony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral. RALPH RAPOZA and CHARLES TATE were caught doing a crossword puzzle in Portuguese class. To see what it will be like, let’s turn the dial to 1974. There’s Jeanne Bourque. My she has been busy in her campaign! It will be difficult to win, for you see, the United States has never had a woman president. Her excellent campaign manager, Jim Rita, is working hard. Ottello Breda has just obtained a patent on his new invention. He says that it will save industry millions of dollars. Barbara Francis is editor of the New York Times — and a very good one, too! Dickie LeBlanc is playing baseball for the Red Sox — maybe they’ll win the pennant this year! Joan Axtell is playing with Ronnie Vieira and his famous band, which has been traveling around the country. Maybe we'll get a chance to see them if they come to Roseland! Ronald “Vince” Takach has also gained fame with his terrific band which features Vincent Taber — the man with the trombone. Ronnie has just signed a contract with a big Hollywood producer to do all the music for their musicals. Phyllis Meunier — that girl with personality plus — has a marvelous position as secretary to the President of General Motors. Edna Rasmussen is assistant to the general manager of General Foods. Remember our quiet little Catherine McNulty? She and her friend Joan Stuck are playing at Forest Hills this year. Their wonderful tennis techniques have won them much fame. Margaret Newett and Joan Panek are now officers in the Women’s Army Corps. They are doing a good job for Uncle Sam. Alan Collinge and Walter Orlick are joint commanders of our country’s Space Patrol. They were the pilots of the first rocket ship to reach the moon. Ronald Ashworth, Paul Lestage, and Paul Sequiera are in the secret service. Their present mission takes them behind the Iron Curtain. Edmund Rihbany is Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. That is quite a jump from our student court! Irene Nunes and Delores Feijo are court ste- nographers. Valerie Fauteux is giving a command performance tonight for the King and Queen of England. Her beautiful voice, sparkling personality, and vivid smile have won her many friends and fame everywhere she has been. 109 110 Chass P rophecy (continued) Barbara Sylvia is starring in a very successful musical currently appearing on Broadway. Nanette Metivier is now starring in the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey circus — billed as Nan the daredevil of the high wire. Our Boston Celtics have had a very successful season. Johnny McKenna is an excellent coach. What team wouldn’t be great with our “Mac” coaching? Dawn Palmer has been making movies in Hollywood. I understand that she has been nominated for an academy award this year. Bruce Lennon has won the Nobel Peace Prize for his fine work as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. When you pick up a magazine and find some “real gone” ad, you can bet your life that it was drawn by Randy Enos, Norm Lavigne, or Art ‘Tarini, all of whom have won fame as commercial artists. Bruce Gulbranson assisted by Sylvia Kristoffersen is operating a Charleston school for squares who don’t dig this crazy dance. Virginia Schenk is teaching at the Cook school, and Norma Stackpole is teaching English at N.B.H.S. Are those pupils lucky! Bev Nichols, Pat Winterson, Thelma Carreiro, and Jean Wishnefsky are Powers’ models. ‘These girls have what it takes! Beverly Hodges is now a famous concert pianist. Marilyn Oliver and Jane Russell have made a great comedy team. Hollywood is their goal. Arthur Siegal is now starting on his second million. The many wonderful things that he did with the first million will always be remembered. Joe Wicherski is now an established CPA. Maybe he can help you under- stand that maze they call an “income tax return.” Have you heard Billy Ramos’ latest recording? Is it a hit! He has already sold a million records of this song! Larry Walsh and Dennis Beck are running for U.S. representatives. Every- body is sure that they will win!! Steve Schwartz and Barbara Freeman are managing a weekly magazine. And that’s quite a job but they perform their duties excellently. Nancy Faria has gone far with her skating ability. She is starring in a new type of show which rivals the Ice Capades but it is on roller skates. The idea is sweeping the country and people are buying tickets far in advance. As you can see, the Class of 54 has done wonderful things with the founda- tion they received at N.B.H.S. The program is excellent, showing success, fame, and fortune for every member. by JANICE FOURNIER =r - oa : : oS S of “= a: = 7 4 ist - D0 fa Fug % aa o ae ee etn SAP gyame ao: oS 2th, pu yeasts =e ates ah CONT he PN ey, cen Ae . eT sas ee td hy ere ’, I ie —? - . ge? agers Genie anes Pe See!
