The Council has been especially active in 1949-1950, selling plastic school book covers, note paper, engineering football rallies, acting upon suggestions of students, and planning any projects which aid the school at large. Their many accomplishments are a result of the excellent spirit of cooperation and help rales particularly evident in the Council this year. — 116 — HONOR SOCIETY Membership in the Honor Society is based upon scholarship, char- acter, service and leadership. Hats off to our own classmates who made it! SNe SENIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE “We work for others” seems to be their by-word, and how well it suits them! Whether it be helping out at the City Mission; giving parties to the kiddies at Sol-e-Mar; acting as hostesses in school; assisting in the Library; or sending packages to the needy, both in America and abroad, their spirit of helpfulness cannot be too highly praised. Who of us will ever forget those Xmas and Valentine parties they gave? — 118 — JUNIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE The informality of meetings lends much charm to this busy group. With their activities at the City Mission, frequent parties, and knitting sessions they are typical examples of carefree high-school girls. — 119 — DEBATING SOCIET Y The Alpha Debating Society has introduced many innovations this year. It entered the Narragansett Interscholastic Debating League. It planned an alumni debate to be held at the end of the school year, and originating a Debating League Newspaper. Members of the Society gained experience in speaking as moder- ators at weekly meetings. — 120 — STUDENT COURT The judge gives a heavy knock with his gavel. It is Friday after- noon and the Student Court is called to order. Co-operating with the Traffic Squad, it gives to students, who receive a ticket for an offense, a fair trial. A judge, defense attorney, prosecuting attorney, and a six- man jury are all part of the Student Court. If a student is found guilty, the judge sentences him according to rules set by the Student Council. The operation of the Student Court helps toward an efficiently-run school. — 121 — THE JUNIOR RED CROSS Each homeroom had a representative to assist in the annual Junior Red Cross collection. Your coins aided in paying our national dues, but more important, the collection helped to purchase materials for our work in Veterans’ Hospitals. The Red Cross flag is annually displayed by the homeroom that collects the highest amount per capita. — 122 — TRAFFIC SQUAD New Bedford High School can truly be proud of its fine traffic squad. Members of the squad see that school regulations are observed by the students. Students abusing these rules are given tickets and are brought before the Student Court where they stand trial. John Hillier, Chief of the Traffic Squad is assisted by David White and Robert Slattery. Also there are two Captains and four Lieutenants who control the seventy- five traffic officers. — 123 — DRAMATIC CLUB With a limit of fifty members, the Dramatic Club was required to have auditions before accepting new members. Practice in dramatics is given members through one-act presentations and an appreciation of drama was gained through lectures. This year the Dramatic Club presented “Junior Miss” for its Spring Play. — 124 — MATH CLUB One of the newest clubs in the school is the Math Club. This club meets every second Friday in room 216, under the guidance of Mr. James R. Hayden. Its purpose is to allow the student to explore and to discover for himself the many interests and worthwhile pleasantries in math. By means of linkages, construction of models, and use of surveying and navi- gational instruments, he is led to see the many applications of math to the physical sciences and the practical world. The officers are Harvey Ades, President; Irwin Jacobs, Vice-Presi- dent; Jean Chase, Secretary and Treasurer. =e THE CRIMSON COURIER “Someday it will be a pleasure to recall these things.” This is the motto of the school newspaper, the Crimson Courier, which was organized in 1941, by the Honor Society. Its main function is to reflect school activities and school attitudes. The Crimson Courier has provided invaluable training to many members of the Senior Class by giving them some experience in their prospective vocations, such as journalism and salesmanship. — 126 — THE BAND The New Bedford High School Band is one of the oldest organiza- tions in the school. The Band has always participated in the fund- raising drives and is a credit to the school as well as the community. Winner of the First Division ratings in Class A of the Massachu- setts Music Festival Association, the Band with its fifty chosen members, is truly an organization in which to take pride. Last May, the School Band was host to the twenty-seven bands and choruses at the South Eastern Massachusetts Band Festival. — 127 — PORTUGUESE PAN - AMERICAN CLUB The aim of this unique organization is to acquaint its members with Brazil and Portugal, as well as other Latin-American countries. Through the efforts of this club, the public heard in November, Miss Margaret Brine, famous lecturer, on travel through Portugal and South America. At their bi-monthly meetings members view travelogues, and learn about Portuguese history and customs through reports given by members. Informative pamphlets are read and the club receives foreign student papers in exchange for the Crimson Courier. Regular corres- pondence with foreign teen-agers is carried on by Portuguese Pan-Ameri- can Club members. — 128 — FRENCH CLUB Parlez-vous francais? If so the French Club was for you. To arouse interest in France, members gave oral reports on famous build- ings and monuments. Weekly dues built up a treasury. Songbooks gave this “money-hole” quite a dent. Practice in conversation was also gained by playing French games. as 120 = BOYS’ CHORUS One of the most beautiful sounds on earth is that of a really good male choir — as aptly proven this season by the forty members of the Boys Chorus. Fall, winter, spring — their singing is thoroughly enjoyable. Particularly active are those few participating in the Male Double Quartet, whose talents extend not only to singing but to comedy also. GIRLS’ CHOIR With more than one hundred strong youthful voices answering its roll, the Girls’ Choir lived up to and even excelled, the splendid ex- amples set in past years by our “Crimson Songbirds.” A bigger-than-ever Christmas program for a large public audience on December 22 and a sparkling spring concert focused the public eye upon a hard-working organization ever aiming for perfection. 2h BOYS’ LEADERS CLUB The Boys’ Leaders Club is made up of the squad leaders from each of the gym classes, who meet each Friday afternoon, to try to better themselves in their gym classes and to aid in the instruction of the mem- bers of the squad. mnie GIRL’S TENNIS CLUB A new addition to the long list of extra curricular activities, this group has proved its ability by defeating several well-known neighboring tennis teams at Buttonwood Park. Reorganized for the winter as the Girl’s Ping Pong Club, the purchase of a new table and equipment has added to the fun. Whether after a swishing white ball in the sun or the patter of a dancing little ball on the table, the girls always find plenty of pep to meet any challenge. -—— 133 — G. A. M. S. The Girls Auxiliary Military Service, organized in 1941 as a part of the Victory Corps, to give girls a knowledge of military procedure physical fitness has since the war, been adopted by the School Board as a part of the regular curricular. Never will any Gam forget her first parade — the martial music, the waving flags, the smiling on-lookers, and the indescribable feeling that comes when one is marching along in step with a group of her friends! The Gams Ball is sponsored by its officers each year, and is an outstanding social event. — 134 — R. O. T. C. The R. O. T. C. enjoys a nation-wide reputation, rated by the De- partment of the Army as one of the best military units in secondary schools. Founded in 1880 as the New Bedford High School Cadet Corps, the unit exerted a significant influence on the educational and social life of the community. As a result of the passage of the National Defense Act, the local cadets were Federally recognized in 1919 and thereupon became the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The cadet battalion participates in two civic parades, Armistice Day and Memorial Day, sponsors a Military Ball in December and an Officers’ Ball in June, and performs with the G. A. M. S. at Buttonwood Park each June at Field Day. — 136 — THE STAMP CLUB For the first time in the history of New Bedford High School, we have a stamp club. This club meets weekly in 202 under the guidance of Mrs. Kula Kontanis. At each meeting, the students exchange various stamps and discuss many new ideas. Through the guidance and aid of several of the members of local “Philatelic Societies,” lectures and slides are given at the meetings. Officers of the club are President, Richard Manelis; Vice President, Thomas Sawyer; Secretary, Alfred Martin; Treasurer, Alice Massingham; and Publicity Manager, Richard Black. — 138 -— JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Junior Achievement is a nation-wide organization for boys and girls 15-21 years of age. It was established in New Bedford in the fall of 1946. By enrolling in this organization, many of our students have learned business principles and made outstanding business contacts. “Companies” are formed of approximately 15 members. They sell stock, make and market a product; and if successful, declare a dividend. Thus the theme “learn by doing” is exemplified. The Achievers’ Association consists of the vice-president of each company and an elected representative. This group is the nucleus of Junior Achievement in each city. It takes up any special problem, plans for social events and popularizes Junior Achievement. — 139 — oh a a ecamiae par ane tants Ld —4 SAS: Studsnt fice elite Bes me er —_ FOOTBALL The Football team of 1949, although expecting only a fair season in September, proved to be one of the best balanced teams in New Bed- ford High’s history. Chalking up nine victories as to one bitter defeat, New Bedford made itself known Statewide. In doing so, New Bedford High won two championships and missed out on a third and greatest one of them all by .2 of a point. It’s honors were the Greater New Bedford Championship, The Bristol County Championship, and a very near miss on the State Championship, placing second on the latter with a 7.00 average as to a 7.20 average of Glou- cester the State Champions. This season added an honor of which any school could well be proud. That is, the All-State Honors received by our celebrated Bobby “Bull” Watkins, which added prestige to our team this year. Although only a Junior, Bobby proved well to be one of the greatest backs in the State of Massachusetts. New Bedford High opened the season against Providence Central High in an arc-light contest which they squirmed a 6-0 win. They outclassed Hope High in their second encounter, 32-0, under the lights at Sargent Field. The Crimson then pulled one of the major upsets in defeating a highly favored Quincy 31-6. Then the defeat at the inferior hands of Watertown 13-7. They then earned their 4th win with a hard fought 14-6 battle with Rindge Tech. Their meeting an out-classed Coyle High, New Bedford High racked up 33 points in the first half and allowed the reserves of the varsity to finish the game in which N. B. won 33-0. Travelling to Springfield, New Bedford defeated a highly touted Cathedral High 28-7. Once more N. B. showed its superiority by spot- ting Fairhaven 1 touchdown and defeating them 34-14. City Rival Vocational High proved defenseless to N. B. offense in gear by a score of 40-0. Then New Bedford ended one of its best football seasons in a burst of glory by trodding over a helpless Durfee High 40-6. BASKETBALL The main threats on the team were Captain Norm Nickerson, Dick Lafferty, Dave Lammers, Howie Baptista, and Len Calderbank. Lafferty and Baptista are the only two of the above players that will not return for action next year. Although this season was not an outstanding one, just watch Coach Win Dodge’s “51” quintet! The Seniors who are playing their last season with the Crimson are as follows: Forwards—Norm Poitras, Dick Lafferty, Dick Bellotti, and Tony Figueiredo, and Guard—Howie Baptista. The schedule and scores are as follows: ve 35 53 52 26 44 25 34 46 36 36 39 25 41 38 43 38 30 37 35 35 DHHDWWDWHW ddd Pawtucket East Pawtucket West East Providence Brockton Coyle Taunton Holy Family North Quincy Voke Durfee Attleboro Holy Family Fairhaven Coyle Taunton North Quincy Fairhaven Voke Durfee Attleboro Brockton 45 44 44 37 a 38 33 23 43 33 44 40 41 55 44 350 68 39 57 52 42 GIRL’S BASKETBALL The swish of a net, the slap of a basketball being caught in a pair of ready hands, and other sounds synonomous to playing a ba sketball game can now be heard not only in the Boy’s but also in the Girl’s gym at New Bedford High School. Feminine basketball players at N. B. High consist of a group of talented girls that have done a splendid job of representing their school in games throughout Bristol County. Experiencing a much more creditable season than their male “cous- ins”, the “Jumping-Janes” of N.B.H.S. are presently tied for first place in the red-hot Narragansett League. This is the first time that the Crimson girls have been in the League and they are fareing very well against the stiff competition. Accou nting a good deal for the degree of success that the girls have enjoyed is the coaching of their able mentor, Miss McFadden. Through her tireless efforts the team has become a well-drilled outfit, that can hold its own against the best, as the girls have already proved. The other element contributing to the success of the team is the great amount of talent and skill that the girls display. Previous to the beginning of the season try-outs were held and a great number of girls came out to try and earn for themselves a spot on the team. This large turnout allowed Miss MacFadden to set her standards high, and only the most skillful girls could qualify for the team. All of the girls worked diligently throughout the pre-season training; some of the girls with not quite enough talent or experience were cut, while the more fortunate ones survived the cuts and went on to form the nucleus of a well-devel- oped team. Some of these included: Janet Sherberg, lanky captain and high- scoring forward of the quintet: Elizabeth Milliken, another girl whose shots often find the nets: Elaine Almond, a newcomer that broke into the line-up: petite Ellen Isrealson, from last year’s Freshman Team: and Jeannette Britto and Phyllis Faunce, the two guards that so ably clear the backboards and handle the ball in the backcourt. These girls — 152 — are backed up by an able group of substitutes, that are ready to enter the fray at any time and do a good job as the player that they replaced. New Bedford also has a second team, girls that will soon be filling those gaps left by graduates, and also some girls whose play warrants them a chance to play on this year’s Varsity. As this book goes to press, the Crimson club has a 3-1 record. They gained a close decision over a powerful Somerset quintet in a thrilling encounter, 43-41. Led by the scoring of the eagle-eyed for- wards, “Jan” and “Libby” whose 22 and 13 points were all-important, the “Jumping-Janes” eeked out a victory. Next, the Crimson club met Case High and this game was strictly N. B. H. S. Although the game was marked with slightly sloppy play- ing on both teams, the girls managed to sweep over the opposition to the tune of 37-19. “Libby” Milliken led the way to victory, pouring 17 markers through the hoop. The N. B. H. S. guards played a tight defensive game, forcing the vanquished to take many of their shots from “outside” thereby greatly lessening their accuracy. These two victories paved the way for a hard-fought battle with a strong Durfee High quintet. In this game the girls ran up against some of the best players in the League, plus too little help from Lady Luck, and unfortunately they were nipped 34-32. The girls were never more than four points behind the winners, but they did not turn on the steam quite soon enough to catch up. The Crimson played a rather slow game for the first three quarters, picking up in the last period, bu t the Durfee girls froze the ball and won the game. The “Jumping Janes” quickly returned to the win column by de- feating a highly tooted Fairhaven team, 31-21. The Fairhaven girls had defeated Somerset and were ready to conquer the Crimson. Their plans were violently upset, however, when the N. B. H. S. combine, led by Janet Sherberg and “Libby” Milliken, swamped the Fairhaven quintet. These games leave hopes high that the “Jumping Janes” will finish high in the final League Standing; and thereby get some of the credit that they deserve. Best of luck to them! — 183 — CLASS HISTORY September 1946! That most memorable month of months when we now “mighty” Seniors entered New Bedford High School as nervous, excited Freshmen. Fresh in the minds of all of us is that first morning when we sat, starry-eyed with anticipation, in the auditorium, listening eagerly to Mr. Dorman as he acquainted us with the rules and regulations of the school. As we poured out of the auditorium, fervently clutching our newly-ac- quired Student Handbooks, many upperclassmen stood by, volunteering tongue-in-cheek information. Many of us still believed in the elevator at the end of the year! After the bewilderment had worn off, we had a class meeting, in which we elected the following officers: President: George Pryfogle; Vice-president: Barbara Bean; Secre- tary: Marilyn Friedland; Treasurer: Jack Harary. We also elected six members to the Student Council, namely: William Stern; Lois Hutchinson; Richard Taylor; Anne Harrington; George DeMello; Barbara Viegas. As we became adjusted to the routine and began to creep out of our shells to view our surroundings, many of us joined such organiza- tions as the G.A.M.S., the Dramatic Club, the Girls’ Choir, Junior Girls’ League, the Band, and other activities. It was in these organizations, that we learned to understand other people and developed those invaluable traits of character —- leadership and cooperation. Many members of our class were present at our first social gathering, the Freshman Party, where we made acquaintances which were to last all through school. When we returned to school as Sophomores, it was we who looked benignly upon the incoming Freshmen and condescendingly directed them to the mythical “elevator” and the legendary “fourth floor”. Many friends from the Junior High Schools joined us and we finally settled down to our studies. Some of us soon became accustomed to yellow cards and home- work; while others became members of the Honor Society, namely: Barbara Bean; Seymour Hertz; Irwin Jacobs; Mary Lou Moriarty; Barbara Rulison; James Siddall. At our first class meeting of the year we elected the following of- ficers: President: Tobias Cabral; Vice president: Helen Illsley; Secretary: Margaret Bollea; Treasurer: Eleanor Cornforth. Again, we elected members of the class to represent us in the Stud- ent Council: Nancy Mercer; William Freitas; Pauline Bolduc; Pauline Adams; Marion Taylor; Barbara Bean; Janet Calnan; Robert Papkin. — 154 — We all had a wonderful time at our Sophomore Party, which was very successful, since we were better acquainted. When we came back to school in the fall of that year it was hard to realize that we were actually upperclassmen —- Juniors, no less! Yet we soon acknowledged the superiority of the noble Seniors. This year, our elections were held in a more mature manner for we took out nomination papers, Officers elected: President: Bernice Goldberg; Vice-president: Mary Lou Moriarty; Secretary: Bernice Holland; Treasurer: Barbara Handler. To represent our class in the Student Council we chose:— Robert Papkin; Frederic Alpert; Pauline Bolduc; Janet Calnan; Lois Hutchinson; Barbara Freeman; William Freitas; Seymour Hertz; Harriet Rusitzky; Ann Kaufman. Many of the more ambitious members of our class joined those who had previously become members of the Honor Society, and the following students received their certificates during an assembly program: Ruth Andrews; Irene Blaszczak; Pauline Bolduc; Simion Horvitz; Jacqueline Boucher; Marilyn Friedland; Theodore Murphy; John Pereira; Richard MacPhail; Robert Reynolds; Eleanor Koniczenski; Constantine T. Nanapoulos. The biggest and most important event of the year was our first formal dance — the Junior Prom — which proved to be very gala and successful. Finally, after three years of hard work and much fun, we became “noble, respected, and well-poised Seniors.” This was the beginning of the most memorable and busiest of our high school years. Miss Lord’s office abounded with active Seniors and the busy Senior Steering Committee together with other committees be- gan to plan for the Class Book, the Senior Prom, the Banquet, Superlatives, the Senior Get-together, and other Senior activities. Under the direction of William Freitas, Editor-in-Chief of the Classbook, things began to move at full swing — Superlatives and other printed material was passed out to home-rooms, appointments for Class Book pictures were made, broken, and made again, and anxious Seniors began to rush to meet one dead-line before another overtook them. This year, after a strenuous campaign, the following slate of officers was elected: President: John Pereira; Vice-president: Connie Kwiatkowski; Sec- retary: Lois Hutchinson; Treasurer: Dolores Barboza. For our rerresentatives to the Student Council we elected :—- Frederic Alpert; Janet Calnan; Pauline Bolduc; William Freitas; Christine Jones; Jeanne Therberg; Robert Slattery; Bernice Holland; — 155 — Marilyn Friedland; Bernice Goldberg; Diane Zanazanian; Constan- tine T. Nanapoulos Those of us who became members of the Honor Society during our Senior year were: Ronald Amaral, Ruby Antoine, Irene Camacho, Adeline Carvalho, George DeMello, Henri Desnoyers, Arthur Dudevoir, Eleanor Flora, Joan Gadbois, Jean Gifford, Sally Goyer, Alfred Harrison, Rae Hol- land, Lois Hutchinson, Izabel Lima, Harriet Martin, Nancy Mercer, Francis Moreau, Constantine A. Nanopoulos, Eleanor Nelson, Rob- ert Papkin, Evelyn Pelczar, Geraldine Roberts, Dorothy Sylvia. Many of us, who had joined organizations in our Freshman year, became officers of different clubs and other extra curricular activities. We held two Senior Parties in our Senior year. The first one was held in the fall and the second was our St. Patrick’s Party. Both of these parties were successful, as we realized that these would be our last get-togethers at N. B. H. S. The final social events of the year were the much anticipated Senior Prom and Banquet. We were now nearing the end of our four year journey at N. B. H. S. and advancing toward the final goal —- GRAD- UATION. And now as we prepare to leave high school and go forth on our separate pathways, we cannot help but express our sorrow at the thought of leaving the many friends we’ve made. Yet, we are happy to be Sen- iors, and are eagerly and enthusiastically looking toward our future years. We realize that we are not the only graduates, for going along with us, are three people who guided us and aided us through our four years of high school, and whose faithfulness and devotion to their work and us has inspired us to greater efforts in future years. We are proud that Mr. Dorman, Miss Lord and Mr. Lillie are graduating with us. We wish success and happiness to Mr. McDonnell and his assistants. But, behold, what change is this that has been wrought! Can these adult, mature, and well-poised young men and women that are receiving their diplomas be the same trembling and nervous Freshmen that in- tently listened to Mr. Dorman that first day? Yes! As we receive our diplomas on June 22, we sadly leave N. B. H. S., and we will be thankful in our future years for the happy memories asso- ciated with our high school days. Lois Hutchinson, Secretary Class of 1950 CLASS WILL We, the Class of 1950, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament: Everett Hardy leaves sweet memories of Mrs. Duff to future seniors.
