S. memorabilia. Would that we could say that our labor pains were minimal, that all our sessions were held in an easy-going air of good fellow- ship — but, alas, no work of art can be brought into the world with so little effort! We shall not mention, therefore, the innumerable weary meetings and the endless planning — planning the finances, the writing, the pictures, the finances, the names, the dummy, and — ceaselessly — the FINANCES. But at length our problems were solved, and the Classbook was completed. If in the future, THE CRIMSON LOG helps to bring back to mind our friends and surroundings while here, the purpose and ambition of its staff will have been amply fulfilled. We cannot allow these pages to be turned however, without first expressing our deepest gratitude to MISS LORD, our class advisor. Her untiring efforts in guiding our affairs and in helping us will always be re- membered most gratefully. Who of us, that worked so closely with our advisor in 128, will ever forget that motto always on her desk - - ‘‘God Grant me the serenity to accept things | cannot change, courage to change things | can, and wisdom to know the difference.”’ Marjorie Gabriel, Editor-in-Chief Class Motto Virtutem ante omnia diligamus. Let us cherish high character above everything. DEDICATION MR. DORMAN MR. MARVEL We feel that our Class is particularly favored, in having the double honor of dedicating our Book to two outstanding faculty members, — our Principal, Mr. Dorman, and our Assistant Principal, Mr. Marvel, both retiring in 1949. Each has given long and valuable service to our school, and each has contributed much to the training and enrichment of our lives. We wish them God's speed, and many more years of happy and useful ser- vice in Our community. Prior to his entrance to high school, he attended the Thomas Rodman School. During his three years here, he made many friends and was well liked by all who knew him. He was with us as a senior only a few days when an accident caused his tragic death. Joseph's friendliness and cooperation were assets which would have brought him much success, were it not for his untimely passing. The Class Book Committee takes this opportunity to express to classmates and faculty, deep appreciation for cooperation and friendships that will make our days in New Bedford High School among our happiest memories. The Crimson opened their season against Voke in an arc-light contest which they won 18-0, but then dropped the next two games to powerful Quincy and Watertown squads. However, with three games un- der their belt, New Bedford started a five game winning streak by defeating Taun- ton, and then taking over Coyle, Gardner, Fairhaven, and Voke on successive Satur- days. In the annual Thanksgiving Day tilt, New Bedford lost to an underdog Durfee High 12-6 to end their season. All in all, New Bedford’s season was fair- ly successful. They compiled the best rec- ord of a New Bedford High football team since the 1943 team had an identical rec- ord. No Crimson grid squad has had a bet- ter season, however, since the state champ- ionship squad of 1941. In rolling up a total of 150 points as against 65 scored by the opposition, New Bedford was never de- feated by more than one touchdown, nor were they ever held scoreless. Members of the squad playing their last season for the Crimson were Captain Don Slocum, Ralph Stevens, John Mort, Bob Chapman, Paul Lavoie, Saul Cohen, Steve Louro, Don Sullivan, Anthony Zielinski, Dick Furlani, Norm Lopes, Joe Santos, Norm Sullivan, and Dave Berlew. N. B. 7—QUINCY 13 New Bedford battled a highly fav- ored Class A Quincy team on even terms only to lose on two momentary pass defense lapses. Unable to dent the Crimson line, the Granite City eleven was forced to play an aerial game, which they did with more suc- cess than New Bedford, who could score only on a pass from Taylor to Poitras. N. B. 18—VOKE 0 New Bedford High School's 1948 football team opened the season by de- feating New Bedford Vocational 18 to O in an arc light contest at Sargent field. WĂ©ith the line stopping Voke’s offense cold and opening holes so that the backs were able to break away time after time, the Crimson could not be stopped. In the scoring de- partment, Bob Watkins scored the first two touchdowns from 6 yards and 10 yards out, while end Ralph Stevens caught Bill Taylor’s pass for the final tally. N. B. 12—WATERTOWN 19 The Crimson had its worst day of the year in bowing to Watertown 19 to 12. Except for five minutes early in the third quarter when two quick touchdowns were scored, the Red and White could not get rolling. N. B. 7—TAUNTON 0 With Watkins plunging over from one foot out to cap a 54 yard scoring march for the only tally of the game, the Crimson started on the road to victory after two straight losses by de- feating Taunton High 7-0. The Red and White gained consistently through the Herringtowners line, but missed several scoring chances. N. B. 14—GARDNER 7 Scoring two touchdowns in the first half and then fighting off a desperate last half rally, New Bedford defeated highly favored Gardner High 14-7. Using a four-man line, the Crimson held the highly vaunted Gardner at- tack in check while biting off huge chunks of yardage consistently them- selves. Letourneau scored on a 77 yard jaunt and Chapman from 13 yards out to break the winning streak of the Miami bound Gardner eleven. N. B. 27—-FAIRHAVEN 14 Stretching their winning streak to four games, New Bedford, after spot- ting Fairhaven two touchdowns in the first half, came back strong to tally three times in the final half. With the backfield ripping off hugh chunks of yardage, and the line stopping the Fairhaven ground game cold, the Crim- son was not to be denied in the annual tilt with their across-the-river rivals. N. B. 33—-COYLE 0 Romping almost at will, the Crimson rolled up its largest score of the year in defeating Coyle High of Taunton 33 to O to avenge last years 7 to 6 setback. With the line stopping the Coyle T-formation attack dead and opening huge holes for their backs, the Red and White rolled for six touch- downs, with even the reserves scoring twice in the fourth quarter. N. B. 26—VOKE 0 Chalking up t heir second straight shut-out over their in-town rival to win the Greater New Bedford Grid Championship, New Bedford com- pletely outclassed Vocational in the Armistice Day Tilt. With Watkins and Taylor each scoring twice, the Crimson tallied once each in the first and second period and twice in the last quarter to pull out of sight of the artis- ans. N. B. 6—DURFEE 12 Durfee, using a four man line de- fense to successfully stop the power- ful Crimson offense, upset New Bed- ford 12 to 6 in the annual Thanksgiv- ing Day contest. With Joe Andrews scoring twice to break the state scor- ing record, and with the whole Hill- topper team playing way over their heads, Durfee both outplayed and out- smarted the Whalers. Andrews scor- ing was done on a 49 yard jaunt off his right tackle and through center from one foot out. Watkins scored the Crimsons lone marker by bulling over from one yard line after a pass from Taylor to Stevens had set up the score. In being beaten by Attleboro, a team which they had beaten by one point previously, the Crimson finished third in the Bristol County League, from which the top two teams were invited to the tourna- ment. New Bedford, opening its season very early, started off poorly by dropping their first three games to strong Rhode Island quintets. However, these contests were scheduled mainly as practice tilts, New Bedford having practiced less than a week before the first game, and cannot be fairly considered in the official record for the season. With this much needed experience, the Red and White quintet proceeded to polish off Boston College High, Holy Family, Taunton, and Vocational in that order before they were halted by Durfee at the Fall River Boy’s Club by a score of 24-34. New Bedford then went on to defeat Brockton, North Quincy, Attleboro, and Holy Family once again before they were shockingly upset by the dark horse team of Bristol County, Coyle High of Taun- ton, 29-27. After defeating Taunton, North Quincy, and Vocational each for the second time, and beating Coyle 33-29 in a hard fought grudge game, the Crimson arrived at the part of their season which shattered their post season tournament hopes. Fairhaven, Durfee, Attleboro, and Brockton defeated New Bed- ford in quick succession before the Crimson finally pulled out of its tail-spin by walking over the Tech Tourney bound Fairhaven five to the tune of 58-32. All in all, New Bedford had a fairly successful season, finishing with a record of 13 wins as against 6 defeats, not counting the three pre-season exhibition games. — 115 — STEVE LOURO DICK BELLOTI Guard Forward Of this years starting five, composed of Captain Jack Nobrega and Norm Nickerson at the forwards, Norm Poitras at center, and Howie Baptista and Paul Lavoie at the guards, only No- brega is a senior. The fastest forward in the county, and also one of the Bristol League's lead- ing scorers, Jack will be sorely missed. Those among the Crimson’s strong reserve ranks who are members of the ‘'Class of ’49”’ are Gerry Dloughy who saw almost as much action as the starters, and Steve Louro who played a great deal at the pivot-post. NEW BEDFORD versus ATTLEBORO Attleboro ran up against the New Bedford home floor jinx which seems to bother all teams except Durfee High when they were beaten by New Bed- ford 35-34 within the County Street confines. Boasting a 3 victory and no defeat record, Attleboro was well on t heir way to their fourth victory, only to be beaten in the last 9 seconds of play when Howie Baptista calmly net- ted a free throw. Jackie Nobrega cop- ped scoring honors for the night with 13 points and also put on a terrific dis- play of dribbling in holding possession of the ball for the last 8 seconds in his own back-court. The game which finally shattered New Bedford’s hopes for a Tech Tour- ney bid was a 45-43 defeat by Attle- boro. Although they played a fine game, the “Jumping Jacks’ finally bowed in this all important contest, the winner of which was promised a Tech Tourney invitation. Lavoie and Poitras led the scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively. BOB CHAPMAN Guard Center NEW BEDFORD versus VOKE In a rough, hard fought contest in which no less than 43 personal fouls were called, the Crim- son ‘Jumping Jacks’’ defeated New Bedford Vo- cational by a score of 49-40. Nobrega and Nick- erson led the scoring with 12 points apiece, while Paul Lavoie did a terrific job in bottling up Lenny Monize, the Trade’s high scoring forward. The second game between the two inter-city rivals turned out to be a thriller with the score at the finish reading 35-33 in favor of the Crim- son. With Nobrega sitting out much of the game due to a recurrence of his old knee injury, La- voie took over as the main scoring punch to net 13 points. NEW BEDFORD versus FAIRHAVEN New Bedford was upset by Fairhaven on the Blue's cigar box floor in a hard-fought thriller to the tune of 40-38. The margin of victory was gained at the foul line where Fairhaven netted 20 free throws to 4 free throws for the Crimson. For New Bedford; Nobrega and Don Lachapelle shared scoring honors with 11 points apiece while the high man for the night was Shurtleff of the victors with 17 points. The Jumping Jacks found revenge in the sec- ond meeting of the two teams by slaughtering the Tech Tourney bound Fairhaven five 58-32. The whole New Bedford team, playing their final game of the year turned in a great perform- ance led by Captain Jack Nobrega. Playing the last game of his brilliant high school career, Jack put on a wonderful exhibition of shooting and passing and finished the night with his all time high of 25 points. — 117 — DON LACHAPELLE NEW BEDFORD versus DURFEE Continuing its recent supremacy over New Bedford, Durfee High de- feated the Crimson 34-24 at the Fall River Boy’s Club. The ‘Jumping Jacks’’ were out jumped by Joe An- drews and Bill Farrissey who managed to control the backboards most of the night. Nobrega tied for game scoring honors with 8 points while Howie Bap- tista chipped in with 7 more. In a game expected to be a thriller, Durfee romped over New Bedford to the tune of 41-28 to continue to be the only team capable of defeating the Crimson on their home court. Enjoy- ing one of their best nights of the year while the ‘Jumping Jacks’’ just could not get started until the last period when they outscored the Hill- toppers 13-6, Durfee sewed up the Bristol County Championship and the subsequent Tech Tourney invitation. Buck Crimson Courier Bob Hope Life Gregory Peck Ingrid Bergman CLASS HISTORY It seems as if it were but yesterday when we, as awkward and ner- vous freshmen, entered New Bedford High School to begin the four hap- piest years of our lives here in this school. Yet, it was way back in 1945— September 1945 to be exact! This was the month we had so eagerly anticipated throughout our eight years of elementary school. Now we think of that first day as quite unimportant. Then, as we tensely sat in the huge auditorium, with so many strange faces about us, listening to Mr. Dorman tell us about the school, its privileges and restric- tions, it seemed extremely important to us. Our first freshman perogatives were exercised in electing our class officers who were: President—Alan Greaves Vice President—James Watson Treasurer—Janice Cleveland Secretary—June Thrasher The ‘Freshmen Get-together’’ was our first social affair in which we all acquired many new friends. We went through this year anxiously await- ing the next, when we would be one step higher. September, 1946! At last we could look down upon those “‘green”’ freshmen, for we were (the majority of us) sophomores! This year we elected as our class officers: President—Alan Greaves Vice President—Ralph Stevens Treasurer—Joan Tomkiewicz Secretary—Barbara Seddon Our most important social event of the year was the ‘Sophomore Get- together.”’ We were all getting slightly more mature. Some of us had resolved to study day and night (?) and become ‘‘quiz kids,’’ while others of us were intent upon a ‘‘normal’’ pupil’s life! No matter which course we took, the end of our Sophomore year approached and that long awaited summer vacation was but a few days away. September, 1947: We were now all-important Juniors, —- members of the upper class! Our class officers this year were: President—Alan Greaves Vice President—William Gleckman Treasurer—Barbara Seddon Secretary—Mary Lou Jones At last, we had a formal class affair — the unforgettable Junior Prom. Many of us will look back, remembering the miniature windmill surrounded by the little Dutch garden and its colorful tulips, which so mysteriously dis- appeared at 11 o'clock! But, like all good things, this wonderful year had to come to an end. September 1948! The year of all years! We were now full-fledged Seniors, “respected, worshipped, and admired”’ by all our underclassmates. The Senior officers were: President—Maurice Duchaine Vice President—Rosemarie Lanzoni Treasurer—Janice Reis Secretary—Constance Benjamin — 120 — Those of us who had resolved to study day and night did not quite make the Quiz Kids, but did attain the glory of becoming members of the Honor Society during our four years here. The Steering Committee, the Classbook, Prom, Banquet, and Gift committees were all formed. Our Class- book committee was first to start working with Marjorie Gabriel as our Editor-in-chief. The Steering Committee began next making plans for our Senior parties, and mapped out all senior activities. We shall always remember our first Senior Get-together and the gala time which was had by all, including the ‘‘delicious refreshments’ served. Each Get-Together was better than the preceding one — the last one, being the Senior Shamrock Shindig, on March 14 — which was a happy climax to all our senior parties. Many of us represented our class in the GAMS, R.O.T.C., Senior Girls’ League, Girls’ Chorus, Boys’ Chorus, Student Council and Dramatic Club, as well as other organizations. By participating in these extra-curricular activities, we acquired a certain social poise and ease necessary in the years to come, and developed leadership and executive ability. The Prom and Banquet climaxed many wonderful times we had through- out our four years. On June 23, as Mr. Dorman handed out our diplomas, we experienced that odd feeling of being happy and sad at the same time; happy at the thought of being graduates, and sad at the thought of leaving the friends we had made among the students and faculty in dear, old New Bedford High School. And now, as we embark upon our journey of life, each choosing his own separate way, we gravely realize that some of us shall never see one another again. The memories of our high school days will be imprinted on our minds forever. We shall always be able to look back upon our high school days as a treasury of wonderful memories. CONSTANCE BENJAMIN, Class Secretary — 121 — LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT “All good things must come to an end’, and, alas, the end of our four years has come. After much discussion and forethought, we, the class of Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty-nine, swearing to be of sound mind and memory, do hereby leave to our faculty and successors the heresaid: Alan Greaves leaves his seat in front of Mrs. Duff to anyone willing to keep it through hard work! Joyce Wagenfeld leaves a satin-bound book of her hundred best jokes. Byron Trefonides leaves the many 7th periods he spent with Mr. Felton. Nancy Taylor leaves a host of admirers. Herbert Shuster leaves his study hall teachers a bottle of aspirins. David Berlew leaves his dislike of neckties to some comfort loving Junior. Marjorie Gabriel leaves all Photographic and Sports Editors to some “lucky”’ future editor-in-chief!! Kelkin Green leaves his ‘“‘knack’’ of falling down stairs. Ray Gamache leaves his football memories. Ralph Stevens leaves his “Sweet Georgia Brown Act’’ to anyone will- ing to work for his pennies. Jack Nobrega leaves all his unfinished homework for someone else to do. Maurice Duchaine doesn’t leave anything to anyone; he’s taking his friends with him. Octavia Peters leaves a couch in room 136 for the benefit of five-year students. Gilda Souza leaves her English notebook which is in triplicate. Mary Denault, in her usual great hurry, just rushes away. Melvin Sher leaves his secret entrance into 102. John Mort leaves the six happiest years of his life. Dot Chase leaves her undying love of gossip. — 122 — Stella Paixao leaves a package of Spearmint to the teachers who didn't know she chewed it. Mary Ann Dodge leaves her reportoire of answers to Miss Rutter’s questions. Louis Politis leaves his admiration of Al Jolson. Constance Benjamin leaves to some lucky girl her position as head cheerleader. Saul Cohen leaves his ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Nancy White leaves her 4th period library seat to another Senior not wishing to do any work. Marshall Cussell leaves his secluded back seat in Miss Rutter’s room. George Bonito leaves his dry humour. Everett Marder confers his title, ‘“The meanest man in N. B. H. S.” to his worthy successor. Vincent Worden leaves memories of Latin and dear old Aeneas Estelle Smith leaves all her worries of choosing a college. Dorene Kelly leaves a warning to all future chemists to beware of sulphuric acid. Clifford Wilbur leaves his red shirt and yellow tie to our next cheer- ing squad. And thus, the ‘generosity’? of our class has been shown by a few of the things some of its members are leaving behind. The class of ‘49 as a whole leaves four of the pleasantest years possible, and hopes that its successors will be able to cherish as many wonderful memories when they leave. — 123 — SUPERLATIVES -- COLLEGE SIDE Most Likely to Succeed Most Studious Most Popular Most Athletic Best Dressed Most Musical Man Hater—Woman Hater Most ‘“‘Happy-Go-Lucky’’ Noisiest Quietest Best Actor, Best Actress Best Looking Class Orator Class Baby Most Inquisitive Wittiest Best Dancer Class Sheik——Class Vamp Glass, Een: (Big Time Operator) Romeo and Juliet Boy William Gleckman Paul Worthington Alan Greaves Ralph Stevens Marshall Cussell Paul Rezendes Kelvin Green John Mort Byron Trefonides Antone Carvalho Frank Prudhomme Alan Greaves Maurice Duchaine Alvin Glaser Alvin Glaser John Mort Donald Senna Norman Frisbie Everett Marder Earle Houghton Girl Marjorie N.
