Her untiring efforts in our behalf will always be remembered with gratitude. Iu Memoriam Omer Fredette entered New Bedford High as a sopho- more. He was with us a few months when an accident caused his tragic death. Omer was a fine boy with lots of personality, and liked by all who knew him. His training as a Sea Scout and as a member of the R. O. T. C. kindled in him the ambition to go to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Omer was headed for a brilliant future, cut short by his untime- ly passing. CLASS MOTTO Non confectus, sed initos. Not the end but the beginning. MR. MARVELL MR. A student must acquire an average of 90 in his freshman year, 88 in his sophomore year, and 85 in’ his junior year to be eligible for this society. Members of the society have tutored students who were particu- larly low in any one subject. The Honor Society will long be remembered by those of us, who were fortunate enough to be elected into its ranks. .— 118 — Ist row—4th from left Editor—Mary Lou Cleary THE CRIMSON COURIER The Crimson Courier, the school paper, is one thing that many of us will miss. To reread of good times, and gossip of days past, in our favorite, the Grape-Vine, is to recall some of our most treasured moments in our four years. This year, particularly, there appeared many new and worth-while columns, and the graduates will indeed understand and appreciate its motto, “Some day it will be a pleasure to recall these things.” — 119 — lst row—Alfred Machado, Bob Xifaras, Patricia Rose 2nd row—Marice Duchaine, Nelson Goldstein, Gertrude Goldstein 3rd row—Bennett Cudish, Arnold Stern, Curtis Schwartz ALPHA. DEBATING SOCIETY The purpose of this society is to give its members an opportunity to acquire poise and ability to express their ideas convincingly. It is one of the more popular clubs in the school as it gives its members a foun- dation for debating, and a chance to be on the Varsity Debating Team which they sponsor. — 120 — Pres. Clarice Cornforth—seated 5th from left DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club offers an opportunity to approximately 40 stu- dents a year to show their histrionic ability before the student body. At the meetings, which are held every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, small skits which have been directed and cast by the students are presented for criticism and suggestive aid from the other members of the club. There are no special qualifications for membership of the club, but all the meetings must be attended, and the students must be willing to help in club activities at all times. The most important work of this club is their annual Spring play which the school takes deep pride in presenting each year. “Nine Girls”, “Miss Jimmy”, and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” all left favorable impressions of the club in the minds of the audiences, and this year’s production “Our Hearts were Young and Gay” was no exception. — 121 — Ist row—James Price, Beulah Bellow, Nancy Jones, Joan Metzger 2nd row—Donald White, Mary Ann Staron, Jacqueline Hopkins, Shirley Travers STUDENT COURT The Student Court and the Traffic Squad work hand in hand in ‘enforcing the rules of the school which are made by the Student Council and the Principal. Every Friday, students, who have received tickets, ap- pear before the Court and are given a fair trial, before five justices. The Judge passes a sentence of a probation period or detention room accord- ing to the offense. The court consists of a chief justice, five associate justices, defense and prosecuting attorneys, and a clerk of court, all of whom are ap- pointed by Mr. Dorman and Miss Lord. — 122 — Chief James Price—5th from left—lst row TRAFFIC SQUAD The Traffic Squad is an all-student organization whose main goal is to keep the student body in order at all times. During passing periods and at recess, these students wear their badges and patrol the corri- dors. Tickets are issued to all students who do not obey the school regulations, and the students receiving these, appear in the Student Court, where they are fairly tried and given due punishment, if convicted. Frequent meetings are held for the purpose of passing in complaints and suggestions, and daily attendance reports are passed in by District Chiefs to the secretary who keeps all records for the credits which are recorded at the end of each semester. — 123 — | 4a sine Ist row—Malcolm Jones, Louis Rusitzky, Mary Lou Cleary, Rosemary Dalzell 2nd row—David Pearson, Willard Rowe, James Andrews. 3rd row—Robert Singleton, Frimet Horvitz, Hilda Meninsky, Agnes Medeiros, Ruth Winokoor 4th row—Gene Grenon, Irene Agostinho, Irene Durant, Hazel Phipps JUNIOR MINUTEMEN Th Junior Minutemen was organized in 1942 under the direction of Mr. William E. Their work at Sol-e-Mar and the City Mission has been a credit to them, and to the school. They have always been there to offer a help- ing hand to those who need it, and have lived up to their motto; useful- ness in living, readiness in serving, and joyousness in giving. — 125 — Standing—Frances Groves, Joan Wright, Joan Sheehan, Ann Cleary, Mary Lou Jones, Marilyn Henthorn Seated—Katherine McImail, Estelle Smith, Jeanne Mello, Joann Carr, Mary Ann Duest, Lorraine Watso, Carole Crowe, Miss Lord JUNIOR GIRL’S LEAGUE The Junior Girls’ League is comprised of girls, from the freshiann and sophomore classes who are interested in service and good fellowship. These girls have done outstanding work in helping the Red Cross, var- ious drives, and sending many packages containing games, jokes, maga- zines and novelties to hospitals and war torn countries. In order to join the Girls’ League, prospective members fill out applications which are brought to the attention of the Executive Board whenever a vacancy occurs, and as membership is limited, only the girls who receive a unanimous vote are accepted. — 126 — TRAVEL CLUB The Travel Club was organized in 1946 by a group of students interested in world affairs. The purpose of the club includes, arousing the interest of the members in travel and exploration, preservation of our national parks and historical monuments, and the establishment of a closer relationship and understanding between the peoples of the world. Among its projects, the club organized a trip to Boston, and to New York. It has also presented many fine travel films for auditorium pro- grams. — 127 — PORTUGUESE CLUB This club, organized in 1944, is limited to Portuguese speaking students, and was formed to encourage social contacts between the chil- dren of our high school and those of their age in Brazil. Its activities include both educational and social programs, and its auditorium pro- gram in honor of Pan-American Day, was a credit to the elub. — 128 — GREEK CLUB The Greek Club was organized after the personal appearance of Stelios Kyriakides, in response to his appeal for the children of Greece. Approximately 14 large cases of clothing, and 20 odd cartons of food were sent to Greece by the students of New Bedford High, with the help of Mr. Sam Collins. The purpose of the club is to stimulate interest in Greece, and through the correspondence of its members, with students in Greece, it has been able to do this. -— 129 — lst row—Wm. Greenberg, Hershel Alpert, Pres., Evelyn Britto, Leonard Bebchick 2nd row—Mary Pina, Grace O’Donell, Foster Lopes, Virginia Bassett, Alvin Glaser PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB This is one of the clubs which has made a very good name for itself in the past year. This club was represented at every formal which was presented during the year and the photographs taken by the mem- bers, chosen for such work, were exceptionally good. They were also represented at all our athletic tournaments, and showed good samples of their work in these also. Their meetings are held every Wednesday where members are chosen for the above work, and lectures are frequently given on the art of photography. There is a well equipped dark room where a different class meets each day after school to learn the process of developing and printing pictures. — 130 — Left to right—Louis Rusitzky, Donald Sederholm, Arnold Stern, Alvin [Levinthal, Curtis Schwartz, Aaron Siegel, Kurt Kleinmann CHESS CLUB The Chess Club is composed of a group of boys who meet together each week to learn the techniques and principles of the game. Its accomplishments in our auditorium periods, outside organizations, and special concerts have also brought recognition to New Bedford High School. This year, to the satisfaction of our audience, Mr. Arey has added a vocalist, Lorraine St. Clair, who helped a great deal in brightening up our auditorium periods. The orchestra meets once a week for rehearsals in the auditorium. They have been invited a number of times to play for outside events, and received many compliments for their work. — 1407 BOY’S CHARTER CHORUS The Boy’s Charter Chorus was established in September, 1945. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for enjoyment and growth in singing. The seventeen members of the chorus have given the student body much pleasure. Its purpose is to provide op- portunities for: voice culture, deeper understanding and appreciation of choral works; and self-expression and enjoyment through song. © They have given us many enjoyable hours of music in the form of auditorium programs and their annual Christmas pageant. SELECTED CHOIR The Selected Choir composed of 16 members of the student body was organized in September, 1945. Its purpose is to represent the high school; to acquire skills in singing with artistic interpretation; and to enjoy singing with others who have equal abilities. Among its many accomplishments, the Choir has presented many musical programs for various community organizations. Ee — FOOTBALL Sargent Field is quiet now, but last fall it was the scene of many hard fought games as New Bedford High’s gridiron machine fought val- iantly week after wee k. Although not winning every game, they treated their fans to the kind of ball enjoyed by everyone — tough, clean football. In their first game, the Crimson overcame opening game jitters to come from behind to tie a strong East Providence eleven. In the next clash, a flood light contest, they had an off-night, and were downed by a pow- erful Providence Central team. The following Saturday, they showed their best form of the young season by defeating a tricky Worcester machine. Next they journeyed to Watertown and lost a tough one after jumping to an early lead on the opening kick-off. They then played the “Shoe-Towners” from Brockton High and gave them a whale of a game, coming close to upsetting them before bowing out, 19-13. Suffering from injuries they were defeated in the next game by a very strong Quincy team. In the Worcester South game, another flood-light battle, the team lost a heart-breaker after pushing the other team up and down the field but being unable to push over a score. They managed to down their across-the-river foe, Fairhaven, in a close contest, but were nosed out by rival Vocational in a thriller. To climax the season, in our annual Turkey Day battle with Durfee High, the scrappy Red and White brought the crowd to its feet by scoring a stunning upset over the two touch-down favorite. e144 es Score of the season’s games PRE NCTC EY 8a acs ccc ch pricy povcrs se taresssesseceveccssssccteesccceseoe East Providence 6 EEE SL Tatoos tacucccscrisassotvsseseece 00th svocecnsaveiveceessvareoees Providence Central 24 ERB Oh cesta s ee. cnc eacusprcatecitccucsnécseniSeaseoscsastanscseees Worcester Classical O TA BRET NN Ee F0 eo ce 8h cos castes tccete cst ceod leks cavlbesvedesvesesssesnsecsaceecerelenase Watertown 21 i TAM 0 De Be eS oon. donc ce gagsecseceveoseaceaccuciserassusnceepeere Brockton 19 I ME yee oe r5 cock os tohcnyvtng che caarcop ison toccedectaecvascarennsqossaesccesenssocscosseosdea Quincy 20 ce orcs sch se coset cevscesteas onde sctcaochesieseseesasetasseenesas Worcester South 7 IE I Aleds 2o 8,8 ccs ars cas gs soar sdnsodeescecusosesicolousockovaessnnssosssisceocseesatéscvens Fairhaven 0 IU 2 gnc o coca coe scacocsascibeaasoertonnse asavsecdsoesuvsivecsececesosssesaeeseos’ Vocational 6 Us i cos gence ieee cae casks ceccecethesvtspacenscsscceatessceesectsocacssosedscsoctrasavcsnesele Durfee 7 “Surry” Nunes was a standout lineman although bothered the en- tire season by a leg injury. H. High 48-44, in a thrilling battle which wasn’t divided until the final minute. Handler and Bettencourt paced the attack. New Bedford next played Taunton High and l ost 36-34 in a sudden death before 1,000 rooters who yelled themselves hoarse. Taking an early lead and staying in front all the way, New Bedford outclassed its rival, Breckton High, 40-28. The Crimson next dropped its second league contest to Durfee High at Fall River 32-29. New Bedford led at half time but finally succumbed to the superior Durfee defense. New Bedford then outclassed Fairhaven which offered practically no opposition 39-16, took inexperienced Coyle High into camp 44-27 and defeated Attleboro High 49-42. Handler had his first good night in the Attleboro game and ended up with 19 points. Then New Bedford lost to Brockton 39-32. At Tabor Academy, New Bedford outclassed a Tabor five 39-23. The following week the Crimson paced by Bettencourt and Langlois defeated Fairhaven 48-38. New Bedford avenged a pre- vious league defeat by defeating Taunton 34-25, in a game in which Lang- lois showed the kind of form that made him one of the best guards in Bristol County. George Handler’s late basket gave New Bedford its most important victory of the season, a 33-29 triumph over city rival, Vocational. The next week the Crimson overpowered the New Bedford Hi-Vets by the score of 49-41. In a game which wasn’t settled until the final horn, New Bedford dropped a disappointing thriller to Durfee High 36-34. The locals were ahead as much as 11 points but couldn’t withstand the last-ditch Durfee attack as Durfee came from behind to win. Lacking a good offense New Bedford lost to Vocational 45-34. Handler managed to get 16 points. en tAe cae An improved Coyle High gave a good account of itself before bowing to New Bedford 42-38. New Bedford then suffered its annual defeat at Attleboro when they were upset 45-30, but New Bedford closed the season in a blaze of glory as they ran wil d against Boston College High, defeating them 52-42 in a game which saw substitutes used freely. Lang- lois, Bettencourt, and Handler, three of New Bedford’s chief men wound up their scholastic hoop career in superb fashion, as did reserves, Sylvia and O’Rourke. The seniors that were members of this team were: Joe Bettencourt, “Bucky” Sylvia, George Handler, “Hipper” O’Rourke, “Chick” Langlois, Danny Kulick, and Gerry Manning. Joe Bettencourt was a hard working forward. He was one of the best ball-handling and ball-stealing cageman in the country. In the game with Boston College High he threw in 19 points and put on one of the greatest ball handling exhibitioons ever witnessed in the local gym. Towering George Handler was the team’s regular center. He was a great board man with a terrific assortment of deadly hook shots and pivot with either hand. He was the team’s co-captain. John “Chick” Langlois was the other co-captain and one of the greatest defensive guards in schoolboy basketball. He has a beautiful eye and threw in his share of points. Leonard “Bucky” Sylvia was another forward who saw plenty of service. He was very aggressive. Up from the C. Y. O. ranks, he played his first year of varsity ball. “Hipper” O’Rourke was a reserve with a good eye and plenty of ability, playing his first year of varsity ball. Gerry Manning, a reserve guard who played two years of varsity basketball rounds out the seniors on the squad. He was a good defensive man with an accurate shooting eye. Bettencourt, Handler, and Langlois climaxed three years of varsity ball for the Dodgemen, and Handler, Manning, and Langlois were mem- bers of the 1945-1946 State Championship Club. eG Cheerleaders at New Bedford High School strike a pose with head leader Phyllis Harrop in front. THE CHEER-LEADERS The Cheer-Leaders of New Bedford High, have for many years followed the team, and been its backer-uppers. This year was no ex- ception, and together with their 20 odd new cheers, they have set a new pace in cheering, which this year was combined with a little jazz and acrobatics. Long live the high school, and long wave its cheer leaders. “On New Bedford, On New Bedford, Fight right through that line.” Ste N. B. H. S. IN ACTION +e ae Se pewnear c CLASS HISTORY— 47 1943! This was the year in which the class of June 1947 entered New Bedford High School. As we walked through the corridors and into the auditorium, we wondered what adventures were ahead of us. We were told the rules and regulations and how to keep out of trouble, especially the Student Court. It was not long before we became well acquainted with our new friends and gathered in the old study hall to elect our Freshman officers namely: President—Lois Raymond Secretary—Gilda Mark Vice-President—Ruth Prince Treasurer—Dorothy Griggs Our Freshman Party was our first social affair, and from that day on, we felt we knew each other better. Many of our classmates joined organizations such as the Junior Minute Men, R. O. T. C., Victory Corps, and the G. A. M. S. (Girls’ Auxiliary Military Service). Little did we think that our G. A. M. S. would become famous, and our classmates, who were members of the organization, would become officers. During the fall term, through the sale of bonds and stamps, the school purchased one light tank which cost $45,800. A drive took place in the last half cf our Freshman Year. We subscribed for $450,000 to buy a B-17 Flying Fortress. We received a letter from the crew and learned the plane was on patrol duty at Ascension Island. In April, we reached our goal of 100% weekly participation and kept that record until Christmas of 1945, winning the distinction of being the only school in the country to attain such a record. At last cur summer vacation came, books were closed and put away for a few weeks. As usual, our vacation flew by and we came back and found ourselves welcoming our new friends from the Junior High Schools. Before long we elected our class officers. President—Marcel Borkowski Secretary—Jean Ellis Vice-President—Paul Milman Treasurer—Ronald Morris Early in the fall, we gathered in the gym for our big Sophomore Party, where we welcomed our new classmates from the Junior Highs. In the spring, our school purchased 19 ambulances, and in our later campaign we bought 12 hospital units. Each ambulance had our school name inscribed on it. V-E Day came during this year on May 8, 1945. We were assembled in the auditorium for an impressive ceremony. We'll never forget that — 150 — day! V-J Day came during the summer vacation and marked the close of a most horrible war. It was hard to come back to studies in the midst of such delightful, summer days. So this was what it felt like to be an upperclassman! It was such a superior feeling — until the “Seniors” came down on us and put us in our places. Our displeasure was soothed by the thought that we now had first floor rooms. During this year we elected the fol- lowing officers: President—Vivian Boulanger Secretary—Barbara Kivowitz Vice-President—William Greenberg Treasurer—Dorothy Araujo In January the Junior Minute Men Organization was converted to a peacetime program. The organization now was to encourage systematic saving among the students and to further the sale of War Bonds and Stamps. Junior Prom, our first formal class dance, was the big social event of the year for us. At last we were “Seniors.” We elected the following officers: President—Harold Cornforth Secretary—Nazera T. Attallah Vice-President—Willard Rowe Treasurer—Dorothy Araujo Our Steering Committee was organized. The first duty was arrang- ing for our Senior Get-to-gether — a party that we'll never forget. Our Advisor’s office was a very busy place because of the many meetings we had during the first few weeks. All you had to do was to look in 128 any seventh period, and you would see a group of seniors just as busy as could be. This group was arranging committees for Prom, Banquet, Class Book, Superlatives, Reunion, etc. The committees began to func- tion, the first one being the Class Book, under the direction of our editor, Lois Raymond. Appointments for pictures, questionnaires, and “down payment” deadlines came next. Did we think that being a senior would be like this? Lois Raymond was elected our class “Good Citizen” to go to the D. A. R. Pilgrimage in the spring. As fast as our first three years had gone by, our Senior year passed. Our Prom on June 13th and our Banquet on June 16th, climaxed our social life as a class. We reached our final goal on June 19th when we were graduated from New Bedford High School. As we received our diplomas both joy and sorrow were in all our hearts. As the doors close behind us, we will always remember our high school days and be thankful for them in years to come. Nazera T. Attallah, Secretary — 151 — LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of 1947, being of sound mind and sane judgment, (despite what the faculty may think), in order to relieve ourselves of our unusual talents, admirable traits, and abnormal intelligence, do here- by ordain to leave, transfer, or bequeath to those surviving us, the fol- lowing: President Harold Cornforth leaves his favorite cheer-leader. Vice-President Willard Rowe leaves his place on the football bench. Treasurer Dorothy Araujo leaves her Treasury Books. Secretary Nazera Attallah leaves the use of the typewriter in Miss Lord’s office to next year’s senior secretary. Joan Metgzer leaves her slightly used neon question mark to any lucky junior who will have Mr. Whitmarsh for history next year. Billy Metcalf leaves his southern-belle. Lorraine Lawrence leaves water and goldfish for the aquarium in the old study hall. Janice Judson leaves her title as “Class Wolf.” Pat Carey leaves all her undone homework. (Boy there’s plenty OLPits) Cecilia Baldo leaves the opportunity to blow up Miss Piggott’s chem class. John Correia leaves all his clean jokes. Lenny Pimental leaves more veterans. Al Parr leaves the spirit of friendliness. (But where did he find it?) Jimmy McDonnell leaves the school in a mess. Eileen Norris leaves the best years of her life. Pat Daprato leaves her typewriter in room 339. Rita Belanger leaves her history notebook and Charlie Sharek. Lorraine St. Clair just wonder if she’s leaving. Renee Lampert due to the high cost of living, wills an increase in wages to Mr. Whitmarsh’s secretary. Edna Zola leaves. Period. Al Brody leaves a good football team that can beat Brockton. Chick Langlois leaves his basketball uniform to Bobby Pallatroni. Joe Bettencourt leaves the memories of himself. Marilyn Jacobs leaves all the test tubes she has broken in Mr. Sanborn’s Chem Class. Joan Davies leaves all her library slips. Jane Beverly leaves her position on the traffic squad. Irene Agostinho leaves her downtown 4th period to Natalie Webber. To Mr. Arey, we leave John Correia’s “JOE.” To the Dramatic Club, we leave Marilyn Jacob’s histrionic talent. To the Hi-Vets Room, we leave a ventilator to clear the smoke screen. To the Traffic officer, we leave a mascot to carry around the chief’s badge. To everyone on the Hill, good luck and pleasant memories of the Class of 1947. — 152 — PET LIKES MRC IOS CAR trans iret censors ts: Vaughn Monroe 6 Lele NZ a sarge eae lave Meron eeivee cee mieten Cire Dancing BRIO LOO LAIN Ge tteetctacesserssetiestassecerstonts srisat Bob Hope ING G TD 5 leek fontaine 9 Se a ser ira elar ORS Alan Ladd [Yen SSS) erhalten ie apse vere Ingrid Bergman io piceOte COUVETSAUION S ractcte-cntte cee Opposite sex SY a) ER rn | ne ede tod EE Stardust ES OOK ge he nee on encectrrre: Leave Her To Heaven 3 ey SY eas ce meer einer ehgy ahem to neha aye ea ee Trees I UCe DS (SS Se. cops cine Aeron terete enn tie a prea barre Margie HS 85 of ehcp te pretcrrs Rarer siete keane ie vale nana Basketball GLE) LOPE ioc.
