ODE TO HARVEY Author Invisible There's a pupil in the senior class Who graduates this year, A clever little rascal Who is also quite a dear. He scampers up and down the aisle He perches on a chair, But when you go to capture him He isn't really there. He laps the hands of seniors, He earns the highest mark: When a bottle crashes, Lets out a ghostly bark. Sometimes he growls a little When he doesn't want to come, But he never smokes a cigarette Or chews a yard of gum. He's a faithful little fellow No other class can know The many hidden secrets That make him come and go. He sits around at test time, Although he's out of view, He is an inspiration With his wonderful I. Q. He has a crimson ribbon That he wears so merrily: In fact it is the only Thing that you can see. The students call him Harvey, A dog that's just a hint, An imaginary canine Immortalized in print, And 'in the hearts of classmates Who will make for Harvey soon An invisible diploma, For he graduates in June.
