We will either find a way or make one. FOREWORD We know that in the future, as we travel over the road of life, we shall look back into the past and try to recall our days as undergraduates at Ne Batis: If the Crimson Log helps to stir up pleasant memories, the Staff will feel itself more than amply repaid. Seek goodness everywhere, and when it is found, bring it out of its hiding place and let it be free and unashamed. Place in matter and in flesh the last of the values, for these are the things that hold death and must pass away. Discover in all things that which shines and is beyond corruption. Encourage virtue in whatever heart it may have been driven into secrecy and sorrow by the shame and terror of the world. Ignore the obvious, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart. Be the inferior of no man, nor of any man be the superior. Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No man’s guilt is not yours, nor is any man’s inno- cence a thing apart. Despise evil and ungodliness, but not the men of ungodliness or evil. These, understand. In the time of your life, live — so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of mt: Published by permission of William Saroyan Copyright 1939, 1940 by Harcourt, Brace Co., Inc. DEDICATION To Miss Mary Lawrence, friend, advisor, teacher. We the Class of 1945 dedicate this Book. We feel that without her help, her helping hand, and her willingness to shoulder our burdens, this Class Book and our graduation would not have been possible. IN MEMORIAM In memory of Eleanor Fontaine, former classmate, who passed away in March, 1944. To those of us who knew her kind, sym- pathetic nature, who recognized her keen sense of humor and gay wit — to those of us who shared the grievance of her suffer- ings, the pleasure of knowing Eleanor will never be forgotten. HONOR SOCIETY Since 1927, with Miss Susan E. Shennan as its capable and understanding adviser, New Bedford High School’s most exclusive organization, the Honor Society, has chosen its members from those pupils showing marked qualities of leadership, service, and char- acter. Besides providing an inspiration for good citizenship and outstanding scholar- ship, it is the nucleus of our school paper and tutoring school. Incidentally, the society is being dictated to by four eights this year, namely Presi- dent George Hartmann, Vice President Roy Evans, Secretary Ruth Kenworthy, and Treasurer Louise Dalmar. as First row—Joe Weissfeld, Barbara Meade, Barbara Burke. CRIMSON COURIER Just before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Graduation you probably noticed one of our classmates strolling around with one ear ring on and one off, a puzzled look in her blue eyes, and a playful smile on her wine-colored lips. No doubt that was none other than Barbara Meade, editor-in-chief of the Crimson Courier. That puzzled expression probably came from attempting to decode the sports editor’s column, the smile was most likely the result of a preview of “Grapevine” and the ear ring was, I am sure, contributed to the “Trading-Post”. At any rate, few of us will ever forget the way we all got tramp- led on by interested readers of the Courier on the day it rolled off the press. 26 First row—Harry Wade, Mary Costa, Francis Viegas, Alice Agostinho. JUNIOR MINUTE MEN An efficient, patriotic, reliable group of young ladies and gentlemen have in four years handled a million dollars which has bought a B-17 Flying Fortress, twenty jeeps, and a light tank. They’ve been largely responsible for continuous 100% student par- ticipation in the buying of stamps and bonds. Our basketball team places us in a prom- inent spot on the map of New England, but this aggregation gives us nation-wide rec- ognition. Yes, you're right. It’s the B. B. H.S. Junior Minute Men we're talking about. 27 {Ree (OP 1b ee Hip, two, three, four —- down the street comes a crack unit of New Bedford High School’s R. O. T. C. led by Cadet Major Armand Gagnon and accompanied by its unique drum and bugle corps. Besides teaching the boys neatness, physical fitness, courtesy, and obedience to law, Sergeant Harold G. Kendall and Lieutenant Edward S. Irwin do an excellent job of im- pressing them with the fact that one cannot lead others until he has mastered himself; however, it seems the boys are quick to learn, for it has been observed that they do quite well leading pretty, starry-eyed young ladies in charming formals over a perilously wax- ed floor at one of the year’s biggest social events, the Semi-Ann. 28 GAMS The feminine counterpart of the R. O. may be found in a smart group of young lassies snappily attired in white shirts, black ties and skirts, and gray overseas hats cocked at jaunty angles on highly held heads. In this battalion led by Major Joyce O’Neil and supervised by Miss Lord, girls not only learn self-control and grooming but receive basic training that would no doubt be priceless to a future WAC, WAVE, SPAR, or Marine. 29 Seated—Alice Agostinho, Pres., Patricia Farrell, Vice Pres., Marilyn McCarthy, Secretary, Barbara Burke, Treasurer. GIRLS’ LEAGUE As we were on our way down to Miss Lord’s recently we found a little brown notebook with the following schedule in it outside of 101. Monday: Help at Fort Rodman hospital . . . go home and have dinner . . . wash dinner dishes . . . read newspaper . . . homework (bless the dear). Tues- day: Go straight home after my chocolate soda and daily gossip session, and do homework . . . get dressed . . . dinner . . . dishes . . . funnies . . . at seven sharp, Charlie. Wednesday: Take care of Betty Jane . . . roll bandages . . . bone up on English. Thursday: Go down to City Mission and help with activities . Here we stopped and looked up to see Miss Lord smiling at us. “We just found this notebook outside of your door, Miss Lord,” we said. Taking it and glancing at the name inscribed on the inside cover, she exclaimed, “Why that’s one of my Girls’ League members!” Since we seemed quite interested in the league, our social adviser went on to tell us that each year the Senior Girls’ League, composed of fifty upperclassmen and the Junior Girls’ League, made up of twenty-five Freshies and Sophs interested in social work, band together in a club to serve the com- munity and at the same time build their own individual characters. We consider this quite a worthwhile target. Don’t you? 30 d t 3 4 ; First row—Robert Goodspeed, Vice President; Jane B. Giles, Secretary; Bernard Portnoy, Treasurer. DRAMATIC CLUB To most of us Spring is anything but just around the corner; but to active Jane Hirshson and her ambitious thespians, this makes no difference. She still is persuading Miss Blaisdell to tutor the Dramatic Club in voice and Miss Brady to give lessons in make-up at the club’s semi-monthly meetings. And guess what they’re doing it all for? - Why the club’s annual, super, spring play, of course. 31 First row—Bernard Portnoy, Rosalind Poll, Salven Meninsky. Second row—Eleanor Baron, Gertrude Goldstein, Rosemary Bowler. Third row—Fernanda Vincent, Gloria Vinho, Minerva Russell, Donald Pearce, Rudolf Gaulke. THE ALPHA DEBATING SOCIETY Meeting once a week under the supervision of Miss Stawasz, the debating society often listens to Rudolphe Gaulke and Donald Pearce exchange (?) views upon prob- lems of current interest. Rudolphe changes the society’s point of view while Donald inserts his questioning looks. 32 STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council, with none other than our own David Groves as its president, is to N. B. H. S. what the House of Representatives is to U. S. A. To its sessions go popu- larly elected members of each class, suggestions for improvement of conditions around the school, and complaints (mostly the latter); and from it come the school traffic rules. TRAFFIC SQUAD If you have ever run down a corridor full speed ahead in order to arrive at your seat in “that class” just as the last echo of the bell is dying away — or possibly there were other reasons for your haste —- you’ve probably had the pleasure of gaining the acquaintance of the school’s police force, the Traffic Squad. They generously give you tickets to . . . continued in the next chapter. STUDENT COURT It’s Friday the thirteenth. You now have in your possession a much appreciated ticket to Student Court. With the jingling of the 2:05 bell still in your ears, you am- bitiously slouch up to the old study hall by way of 136. While Prosecuting Attorney George Hartmann is nonchalantly looking through the Clerk of the Court’s file to see how many of his friends’ names he can’t find there (not a one has he yet missed) you calmly sit in the northeast corner of the court wiping the perspiration off your brow. Finally court is called to order by two, or possibly a few more, raps of Judge Armand Gagnon’s mallet and the last case is none other than you. “Ismiria Pipplesqueak,” fluently pronounces Clerk Louise Dalmar, and you rise, race down the aisle, present yourself before the judge, receive a lecture, and ten probation periods. Now you are forced to go to Probation Officer Shirley Horton. Right here and now you resolve that never again must you commit the crime of running in the corridor — you just couldn’t stand another session like this. ASSEMBLY CHORUS Many thanks should be given to Miss Radcliffe and her Assembly Chorus for ren- ditions during auditorium periods. Not one of us will ever forget those much enjoyed singing sessions conducted by one of our most lovable teachers and the chorus. 33 BAND Ask anyone what he liked best about the Armistice Day parade, and provided he is in his right mind, the answer will be, Why, the New Bedford High School Band, of course.” The boys will naturally cast their votes for the drum majorette or the twirler, but basically, they’re all talking about the same thing. Go to a football game and that NB made by our fire-red and soldier-blue clad band calls forth more than one admiring glance; and have you ever tried dropping a block-buster in auditorium when Mr. Dorman makes the announcement that Mr. Arey will conduct the band in a selection? ‘Try it some day; we feel quite sure no one will be disturbed. Besides this, there are a few trophies in the band room all of which adds up to one thing: Do you know the New Bedford High School Band? Well, we think it’s quite the thing too; and as far as the orchestra is concerned, you can just use ditto marks. THE PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club, composed of young people interested in the art of taking pictures is conducting an active program under the guidance of Mr. Willey. In our interview with the president, Leonard Pimental, he seemed to stress the fact that the dark room was of great use to the members. We're all wondering what goes on there. It couldn’t be that you develop pictures in there, Lenny, could it?!? CHESS CLUB A dozen or so players, known as the Chess Club, congregate in 140 to sharpen their technique. If some of us could manage our “men” as well as the members of this organization do, we might well wire back to headquarters that we had the situation well in hand. THE JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross is another one of the organizations in New Bedford High School whose members do their best to help those less fortunate than themselves. Act- ing as the Red Cross’s official representatives in the school, these young trojans fever- ishly flash needles in and out as they proceed to knit sweaters and crochet afaghans, while other thoughtful fellow club members make dainty favors to be placed on some disabled serviceman’s or sick child’s tray, and still others make plans for the annual Junior Red Cross membership drive in N. B. H. S. 34 INTER-CLUB COUNCIL This organization, under the supervision of Miss Lord, is what well might be called a beneficial holding company or interlocking directorate. Its meetings are attended by representatives from each club in the school; the purpose being to iron out problems and make a unified plan for extracurricular activities. Although it is one of the school’s newest organizations, it is tackling the tremend- ous and worthy task of completing a “Buddies’ Club List” consisting of the names of servicemen who have attended New Bedford High for a year or more. To them goes the graduating class’s sincere wish that they meet with 100%, cooperation from the school, take it by the hand, and go on down a paved road to success. THE CHEERLEADING SQUAD “Daddy, who are those players down there who are in white sweaters and red skirts and never know when to start or stop playing?” “Where, dear?” “Down there, behind the bench. When the referee calls time out, they start pump- ing their arms back and forth spelling New Bedford; and when he blows his whistle for the game to start again, they stop. Queer creatures, aren’t they, Daddy?” “Sh!! quiet, dear. Those girls aren’t players; they're New Bedford High School’s cheerleaders. You’re supposed to cheer along with them.” “Gee, I don’t see what fun they get out of making funny motions.” “Well, I was talking to one of the cheerleaders, Shirley Horton, the other day and she said that it’s a grand feeling to think that maybe your cheering helped the boys ” win. “But, daddy, they don’t always win. It can’t be fun when they lose.” “IT know, dear, but Louise Dalmar, their head cheerleader was with Shirley, and she said that even when they’ve lost, she’s still pretty proud of her NB and that she wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.” And that along with a few whispers pertaining to Audrey Brodsky, Barbara Cham- pagne, Dorothy Mayhew, Lorraine St. Clair, and Norma Warburton -— other members of the squad — constitutes the conversation we overheard one Saturday afternoon at Sargent Field. BASKETBALL — 1944 As N. B. H. S. entered upon its third wartime basketball season things didn’t look any too good as far as quintets were concerned. We lost our first three games to Rhode Island foes and were taken lightly as a threat for any city or county championship. Despite this poor beginning the team was able to make an impressive record for itself with fifteen wins and five losses. These records include the two M. I. T. games and also one apiece with the Alumni and the Murphy Club. This year the site of the M. I. T. Tournament was changed and this time to more spacious quarters. The scene of this classic for years to come will be the Boston Garden. The 19th Annual Tournament had N. B. listed as a pushover, but the boys beat Haverhill in their first game and came back in the semi-finals to lose out to Wal- tham in an overtime period of what the Boston scribes called “The best game of the Tournament”. The present seniors who played on this great team were Bill Cotter and Sid Dennis. 38 FOOTBALL Again the New Bedford Football Team has been set back by a Rhode Island team in its opener. Not only that, but the honors were again stolen by a Rhode Island team in the second game of the season. The first, against East Providence, was chalked up on the Revenge Board as 6 to 0. Providence Central, whom we beat last year 14 to 6, came back to over-ride the Crimson 13 to 0. Slow to start, but hard to stop, the Boys in Red shook themselves out of their doldrums to whip their city rival, Vocational, 13 to O and hold the hard riding, efficient Durfee eleven 0 to 0. Suffering a reversal at the hands of the Brockton Iron Men, the team settled down for two weeks of hard practice before the coming battle with Cranston, concerning which the “locker-room lawyers” will hasten to assure you the results are “in the bag”. Let’s hope it is the first of five successive winning games that the boys need to tie last year’s score of 6 wins to 3 losses. Co-captains Dick Riley and John Watson, also the only two men left from the starting lineup of last year, are assured that victory will be theirs with the help of such seniors as Bill Higham, center; Joe Kuliga, guard; Lenny Roberts, back; and Bobby Brown, back. BASEBALL Under the able leadership of Captain Sid Dennis, the Crimson nine again upheld its high standard, winning a majority of the games booked for the season. The Taun- ton team was overwhelmed in the two games with New Bedford. The score with Fair- haven stands: lost—1, won—1, during which Jerry Brault pitched a no hit—no run game. Though the meetings with Vocational did not fare so well with two lost and one won, we redeemed ourselves with Durfee by winning two of three games. In- cidentally, these two games were the only two lost by Durfee in its season. The season was ended by winning two games from Dartmouth and losing two to Brockton. All in all, the record stands: won—8, lost—6. 39 HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF JANUARY 1945 F-O-R-W-A-R-D, MARCH! And we did — for in January, 1941, New Bedford High School thrust wide open its doors to the newest and brightest batch of recruits — the Class of January, 1945. Recruits we were then, but with the drilling of five and six teaching strategists in one day, the next four years saw the rookiest of a freshman molded into a prized four-star senior. As P. F. C.’s (praying for corporals), we found ourselves marching miles in three minutes, and echoing the ever famous gripe of “too much homework”. However, we finally buckled down to our first real duty of electing class leaders. Richard Carlson was chosen President; Stephen Cassidy, Vice President; Richard Hatch, Secretary; and Mary Orabona, Treasurer. Representatives to the Student Council were Ruth Soule, David Groves, and Joseph Silverstein. Our first job well done, we lined up for promotion which set in with ten weeks of vacation and climaxed with the general issue of our smart Sophomore uniforms. A new group of non-coms joined our battery at this time, and in these new buddies we found enduring ac- quaintances. Meanwhile, various school organizations snapped us into attention, and eagerly, enthusiastically, we partook in such activities as Dramatics, Art, and Sports. A new class slate was posted, Royal Evans attaining office as Presi- dent; Mary Rapoza, Vice President; Ruth Stone, Secretary; and Lillian Zielinski, Treasurer. To represent us in the Student Council, Edith Car- doza, Ruth Stone, and David Groves were unanimously elected. Honor- ing our class for one year of high scholastic standing, Royal Evans was awarded membership in the Honor Society. Spring ushered in June, and a furlough of ten weeks ended in Sep- tember as we reluctantly trudged back to the beginning of our Junior year. Not so reluctant were we, however, after reading future orders of the day. A new girls’ military society called the G.A.M.S. was formed, and into this organization many of our more serious minded military friends enlisted for further G. I. drill. The Junior Minute Men Organization also found us cooperating 100 per cent in a cause far exceeding 100 per cent. 40 A new board of C. O.’s pended action, and we responded by electing our new Officers in Charge. We chose Royal Evans as President; Sandra Manelis, Vice President; Eunice Tavares, Secretary; and Lillian Zielinski, Treasurer. Our representatives in the Student Council were David Groves, Sue Funcia, Dorothy Zolt, Elvira Medeiros, and Lennie Perry. Outstanding students admitted into the Honor Society at this time were Louise A. Dalmar, Armand L. Gagnon, George C. Hartmann, Barbara F. Meade, Mary Y. Orabona, Donald P. Pearce, and Eunice Tavares. The months flew quickly by, and with an official leave of ten weeks we experienced a new and different summer vacation. We were now working in factories and on farms. Some of us even upped and enlisted in the real line of duty — the service of Uncle Sam. September, November, January — and at the completion of our Junior year, we elected our Commanding Officers. The victors were Mary Rapoza, President; Sue Funcia, Vice President; Eunice Tavares, Secretary; and Lillian Zielinski, Treasurer. We chose Howard Rogers, Virginia Turner, Cecile Charbonneau, Edith Cardoza, David Groves, and Royal Evans as representatives to the Student Council. Among new members admitted into the Honor Society were Alice Black, Robert A. Brown, Evalina Constantine, Sue Funcia, Dudley C. Hathaway, Ruth Ann Kenworthy, Joyce K. O’Neil, Norma Roderick, Abraham Schlein, and Frank Wunschel, Jr. From then on we stocked up ammunition and opened our Senior year with a boom — the 7’s St. Patrick’s Day Dance. So successful was this party that not only Lincoln and Washington, but even Jackson put in an appearance into our almost vacant treasury. We summer-vacationed once more, and in September a compact group of upper classmen returned to the final six months at New Bed- ford High School. Climaxing our four years of intensive training, we attended the prom, banquet, and graduation where we received four stars in the form of our diploma. Thus, we, the Class of January, 1945, fully equipped and with a rightful mind have set out to make this a happier, peaceful world in which to live — and we're the soldiers who can do it! Knowing, that as time goes on, a picture, no matter how vivid, will fade with the years, we have thus im- parted every photograph and printed word that may help to preserve the vivid memories of those days. If, after several decades have passed, you may chance to leaf through this book, we hope you will find that the brilliance of a somewhat dim- ming picture is restored. Then, and only then, shall we know our tireless efforts have been crowned with the glory and satisfaction of a great success. The Class Book Committee Class “Book Carniittes Editor-in-Chief Harry A. VOLUNTARIES In an age of fops and toys, Wanting wisdom, void of right, Who shall nerve heroic boys To hazard all in Freedom’s fight,— Break sharply off their jolly games, Forsake their comrades gay And quit proud homes and youthful dames For famine, toil and fray? Yet on the nimble air benign Speed nimbler messages, That waft the breath of grace divine To hearts in sloth and ease. So nigh is grandeur to our dust, So near is God to man, When Duty whispers low, “Thou must,” The youth replies, “I can.” Ralph Waldo Emerson “__voung men, obey your heart and be the nobility of this land. In every age of the world there has been a leading nation, one of a more generous sentiment, whose eminent citizens were willing to stand for the interests of general justice and humanity at the risk of being called, by the men of the moment, chimerical and fantastic. Which should be that nation but these States? Which should lead that movement if not New England? Who should lead the leaders but the Young American?” From “The Young American” by Ralph Waldo Emerson Il ACTIVITIES EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Francis Viegas Manuel Camara Barbara Burke Carmen Perez Joaquim Weissfeld Harry Pearson Margaret Whitton Dorothee Mayhew Helen Osuch Mary Pateakos John Halliwell Eleanor Braz Grace Tripp Wanda Dubiel Graydon Parker Dorothy Parsons Jane Plocharczyk Genaro Oste Ralph Cooper Anastasia Olenowich Irene Berry Edward Burns The 8’s Executive Committee consists of two pupils from each of the senior home rooms, and the class officers. During the first few weeks of our senior year many meetings were held by this committee. First they voted on the class photographer. At another meeting they elected the pupils who were to serve on the class- book committees. Later on in the term they also elected the Prom and Banquet Committee, the Class Gift Committee, the Reunion Committee and the Cap and Gown Committee. They helped in collecting Alumni Association dues from the seniors who wished to enter that association. They steered the “8’s May Hop” which was held instead of our “8’s Get To-gether”. At this dance a new standard was set by our class for future dances—only couples. This committee was heavily burdened by the fact that ours was a large class. That was the year in which the class of June 1945 entered New Bedford High School. As we walked through the corridors and into the auditorium we wondered what was behind all of those closed doors, and what new adventures and excitements were ahead of us. Once in the auditorium we were told about the rules and regulations of the school and were given a few points on how to keep out of trouble, and the Student Court. Then someone started to call out names and room numbers and before we knew it, we were looking around for what was to be our home-room. (Imagine—third floor rooms and basement lockers). For the first few weeks, many of us were fooled by the saying — “Take the elevator” or some other bright remark made by a Senior who had been fooled himself when he was “just a Freshman.” Soon we had a class meeting and the democratic powers for which our country is noted were imparted to us. We elected our Freshman Year Class Officers, namely: Donald Wall, President; Robert Crowe, Vice-President; Dorothy Kavanaugh, Secretary, and Dorothy Healy, Treasurer. Our first taste of social life came on St. Patrick’s Day when we had our Freshman Get-Together. At long last our summer vacation came, and books were closed and put away for a few weeks. As usual these few weeks flew by and before long we were back to the old grind. At this time we were glad to wel- come our new clasmates who had come from the Junior High Schools. Many of the girls joined the G.A.M.S. — a fast-growing organiza- tion: and the boys joined the R.O.T.C. The Pan-American Chorus, Dramatic Club, Band and Orchestra were also important activities with us. We did our bit to help our country by backing up the Jr. Minute- men organization. Before long we elected our class officers. This year we had chosen John Halliwell, President; Anita Truflemen, Vice-President; Irene Sheehan, Secretary; and Barbara Burke, Treasurer. As our summer vacation came into view we welcomed the idea of rest and recreation, and some even welcomed the idea of going to work. 58 It was hard to come back to studies with such hot days still wait- ing to be crossed off the calendar. But we were brave, and found our- selves in our Junior Year. So this was what it felt like to be an upper- classman! It was such a superior feeling — until a Senior clamped down on us and put us in our places — but our temporary displeasure was soothed by the thought that we were now in first floor rooms, which were nearer to the lockers. At this time Joaquim Weissfield was awarded a full scholarship for the Summer Session to the Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. In the Junior Year, two of our classmates received honors! Alice Agostinho was awarded the Women’s Club Award; and Francis Viegas, received the Harvard Book Award and a full scholarship for the Sum- mer Session to Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. Time marched — naturally we marched with it, and eventualaly we came to another summer vacation. Then, one fine fall day, there we were—the cream of the crop-—SENIORS. This was what we had worked for—what we had thought about and talked about, during our first three years in high school. We had our final elections, at which time, Francis Viegas was elected President; Manuel Camara, Vice-President; Carmen Perez, Sec- retary; and Barbara Burke, Treasurer. To start off our Senior Year, we gave an 8’s Dance on Armistice Eve, which was very successful. Again Alice Agostinho was honored, by being awarded a scholar- ship by the Portuguese Educational Society and Antone Felix was awarded the epic poem of Portugal, “Os Lusiadas,” by the same society. During our Senior Year, some of the boys in our class left to serve their country. They were: Leonard Tchorz, Henry Jourdain, and Gilbert Steele, who joined the Navy; Clifford Crook in the Coast Guard; and John Watson and Albert Saunders in the Army. With a prayer in our heart we saw them go, knowing that they would be a credit to whichever branch of the service they might enter. It wasn’t long before we had chosen our Senior committees and were getting together the material for our classbook. Carmen Perez, Secretary of Class of June, 1945 59 HONOR SOCIETY To give recognition to students who possess distinct qualities of service, leadership, and character, and who have high scholastic stand- ings, is the aim of this society, which was organized on October 14, 1927. Membership in this society is one of the coveted and high honors in the school. 3’s who have attained an average of 90%, or over, for their first year’s work, 5’s, having an average of 88%, or over for two years work , and 7’s, 85%, or better for three years’ work, are eligible for membership. The induction ceremony is held each term at a suitable auditorium period and new members are presented with their library permit and certificate of membership. Miss Susan E. Shennan is the faculty advisor. The present officers are: Lloyd Calvert, President; Barbara Burke, Vice-President; Theresa Lyons, Secretary; and Laura George, Treasurer. ef) eds -sff }e- CRIMSON COURIER The school newspaper, the Crimson Courier, was organized in the fall of 1941, by the Honor Society. It’s main function is to reflect school activities and school attitudes. The Board of Directors of the publication consists of the four officers of the Honor Society, an editor, and a board of three advisory members, elected by and from the Honor Society. The remainder of the staff is selected from the school at large by the editor and his editorial board. The student publication contains club news, music, cartoons, humor, Grapevine, The Inquiring Reporter, and the “Letters to the Editor” columns. Miss Shennan is the faculty sponsor. The Editor in Chief is Joaquim Weissfield assisted by Christine Gartaganis and Jack Wagner, assistant editors. The advisory board consists of Alice Agostinho, Samuel Genensky, Richard Gardner and the four Honor Society officers. 60 STUDENT COUNCIL The N.B.H.S. Student Council was formed in 1920, and is an organization composed of the presidents and representatives elected from each class, the Chief of Traffic, and Chief Justice of the Student Court. It meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. The representatives bring up for discussion school problems which have been called to their attention by fellow students. The body is democratic in theory and function. Its recommendations are passed on to the faculty. The Student Council is an organization working for the students. It is truly a “by the students, of the students, and for the students”, institution. Miss Marion E. Lord is the faculty advisor. The present slate of officers is: President—Edward Harrington Vice President—Bernice Fuller Secretary—Jane Giles Treasurer—WNicholas Simeonides STUDENT COURT The Student Court or Traffic Court works in cooperation with the Traffic Squad in enforcing rules of the school as laid down by the Student Council and the Principal. The Court consists of ten members all ap- pointed by Mr. Dorman. From these ten members, a Chief Justice, a prosecuting attorney, a defense council, a probation officer, and a clerk are selected. The court sits weekly, hears cases, and renders verdicts on all cases brought before it by the Traffic Squad. The business brought before the court is similar to that of any similar civic court. Any person having “business” with the Council must appear at the earliest court session, otherwise he is held for contempt of court. The notices inform the students of Student Court sessions. The Chief Justice is Harry Wade; Prosecuting Attorney is Don- ald Janak; Defense Attorney is Peter Tsouprake; Probation officer is Sondra Rusitsky; Clerk is Kathleen Baker; and the Justices are Rose- mary Foster; Howard Dyer, Jackelyn Smith, and Natalie Kerwin. 61 JUNIOR MINUTEMEN This efficient and patriotic organization was formed, in 1942, by the Jr. Hi-Y, under the direction of Mr. William E. King, but because of the magnitude of its activities and responsibilities, it became a sep- arate organization, known as Jr. Minutemen. This year, under the guidance of Miss Brady and capable leader- ship of co-chairmen, Francis Viegas and Harry A. Wade, the Jr. Minute- men have operated with a well-established system of home room repre- sentatives, who collect the stamp and bond orders directly from the stu- dent body. As a result of the organization’s effort, 100%, weekly participation in the sale of Stamps and Bonds has been reached and maintained, for the past eleven months. Recently, another goal has been planned — an average investment of 50 cents per person, weekly. The group’s outstanding accomplishment this year was an Ambul- ance Drive, which obtained enough money for the purchase of ap- proximately 20 vehicles. Prominent seniors active in the organization are Irene Souza, Antone Felix, Clarice Sylvia, Alice Agostinho, Irene Sheehan, Jerome Brault, Marguerite Sylvia, Milton Goldberg, Eugene Krenmayer, and Danny Furtado. -- it been JUNIOR RED CROSS The American Junior Red Cross is the American Red Cross in the schools. Our unit was organized in 1940, and serves as a medium be- tween the school and the American Red Cross Local Chapter. Two rep- resentatives from each homeroom comprise the general organization which meets bi-monthly. A Council of twelve representatives, and Work and Service Committees carry on an active program for the school. We are particularly interested in serving the men in the hospitals at Fort Rodman and Camp Edwards. The officers are: Minerva Russell, President; Winifred Pate, Vice- President; Bernice Fuller, Secretary; and Louise Lampert, treasurer. Miss Marion E. Lord is the faculty sponsor. 62 RO eel. The R.O.T.C. affords to colleges and high schools a means of practical training and academic instruction in organization, leadership, discipline, and other pertinent subjects. It is composed of capable young men with military inclinations. The results of each year’s work are demonstrated at the annual inspection, while the exhibitionary phases contribute to the entertain- ment on the occasion of the Annual Drill and Ball. Membership is open to those boys of creditable scholastic standing, physical soundness, and adaptability to military direction. The high school unit is under the direction of Capt. Richard Conti and Sgt. Harold Kendall. - =i ben GoAeMes. The Girls’ Auxiliary Military Service is a unique part of the N.B.H.S. War Effort. This organization gives the girls training in military tactics and drill, and helps to keep them physically fit. This snappy outfit is under the guidance of Captain Richard M. Conti, and Sergeant Harold G. Kendall of the R.O.T.C. and Miss Lord. Major Roberta Sibor is the Batallion Commander and under Cap- tains Irene Wak, Patricia Cleary, Irene Sheehan, and Elizabeth Chad- wick. this organization is really a credit to the school. SENIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE The motto of the Senior Girls’ League is: usefulness in living, readiness in serving, and joyousness in giving. The members of the League who are graduating, look back on a period of genial companionship, good times, and entirely worthwhile accomplishment. The officers are Alice Agostinho, President; Joan Russell, Vice- President; Marilyn McCarthy, Secretary; and Barbara Burke, Treasurer. Miss Marion E. Lord is the faculty sponsor, of both the Junior and Senior Girls’ League. JUNIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE This organization is made up of Freshmen and Sophomore girls who wish to carry on the motto of their elder sisters in the Senior Girls’ League. Their activities and accomplishments are similar to those of the seniors and their work is equally commendable. The officers are Renee Lampert, President; Barbara Heinz, Vice- President; Joan Metzger, Secretary and Treasurer. 64 BAND-ORCHESTRA The Band and Orchestra are under the direction of Mr. Clarence Arey. During parades, the smart red and blue uniforms of the New Bed- ford High Band are always prominent. Great praise is given them for their remarkable ability and skill. All those musically inclined are able to join these organizations, and sometimes, a few lucky souls are given the advantage of soloing in auditorium. Both organizations have given concerts that have won fame and praise for New Bedford High in the music field. ALPHA DEBATING SOCIETY Anyone having an interest in debating and wishing to develop his abilities in this field is eligible to join the Alpha Debating Society. Meet- ings are held every week in Room 234, under the sponsorship of Miss Stawasz. Debates are carried on within the club, enabling members to acquire skill in public speaking, and to develop clear, logical thinking in the study of world problems. An added activity of this club is the Varsity Debating Team, which holds debates with neighboring high schools and academies. The present officers of this organization are: President, Bernard Portnoy; Vice-President, Rosalind Poll; Secretary, Florence Millman; Treasurer, Selvan Mininsky. 65 DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club offers an opportunity for thespian-minded students to cultivate and display their talents. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. When the annual Spring Play is presented each May, their accomplishments are shown to the public. In the past, favorable impressions have been left in the minds of the Club’s audiences, after seeing such plays as “Don’t Take My Penny”, and last year’s, “Nine Girls.” Officers of the Dramatic Club this term are Jane Giles, President; Bernard Portnoy, Vice-President; Margaret Wilkinson, Secretary; and Edmund Rose, Treasurer. TRAFFIC SQUAD Members of the Traffic Squad work with faculty members to main- tain order throughout the school. Tickets are issued to all students who do not obey school regulations, and students receiving these tickets must appear in the Student Court where they are given trial. Robert Pearson, chief of the Traffic Squad is assisted by two assistant chiefs, ten deputy chiefs and one hundred and twenty marshals. a WY = ’ eZ = 2 ANT. 1) 66 THE FRENCH CLUB The French Club, composed of a group of girls who are interested in the customs and language of the French, meet every Thursday under the guidance of Miss Begin. The group plays games, converses, sings, and dramatizes plays, in French. This club has accomplished a great deal in furthering the interest of the French Language in high school. CHEERLEADERS During the football season you can see them out on the field, giving out with “yeh, New Bedford!”, in vigorous effort to cheer our boys on to victory. Dressed in white sweaters and swirling red skirts, they freeze to the tune of “On New Bedford,” and stay right on to the end of every game, gloomy or bright, as the case may be. Guessed who they are yet? Of course, that’s right, they are our cheerleaders, and the energetic lassies making up this group are as follows: Norma Warburton, Dorothy Mayhew (one of our fellow graduates), Lorraine St. Clair, and Barbara Champagne. CHESS CLUB A dozen or so players, known as the Chess Club, congregate in 140 to sharpen their technique. If some of us could manage our “men” as well as the members of this organization do, we might well wire back to headquarters that he had the situation well in hand. 67 ASSEMBLY CHORUS The Chorus was formed by Miss Janet Ratcliffe in September 1944. Any student who is able to carry a tune is eligible for the chorus. During several of our auditorium periods we have been entertained by the Assembly Chorus. We have hopes that this fine organization will ex- pand into a larger group, and continue to reflect credit upon the fine efforts of its director. = =i ben PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB For the past few years, there has been growing interest in photo- graphy, and so it is only natural that the school should have a photography club for the benefit of camera fans. The club has its own darkroom and equipment. At its meetings, members are taught the process of develop- ing and printing pictures. The officers are Leonard Pimental, President; Alvin Cronig, Vice- President; Helen Osuch, Secretary; and Joseph Carreiro, Treasurer. Harold E. FOOTBALL Ist row—left to right:—Len Thorz, Dick Turner, Dick Riley, Bill Higham, Joe Kuliga, George Kuliga, Gerry Manning. 2nd row :—Ray Peel, Len Roberts, Henry Jourdain, John Russell. In the early fall, fans tramped to Sargent Field, as they have been doing for years, to watch the 1944 edition of the Crimson grid machine play sixty minutes of tough, aggressive football. When candidates were called out in September, Coach Dodge saw that he would have to mould a group of green gridders into another of his hard-hitting machines. The services had taken the majority of the lettermen around whom Mr. Dodge had planned to build the team. 76 We followed the wartime schedule playing two games each with both Voke and Durfee. In this home and home series, New Bedford split with Vocational winning the first, dropping the second and fought Durfee to a scoreless draw here in New Bedford but dropping the return game on the Fall River field. While having a rather unsuccessful season from the standpoint of wins and losses the Crimson was never a school touch for any team. Bad breaks and injuries broke up many games that could have gone either way. Since the close of the season some members of this team have gone to play as the world’s greatest team. Bill Higham the team’s re- liable center and Henry Jourdain the plunging fullback are among the boys serving Uncle Sam. As in the past, N.B. athletes gained recognition in the annual. Bris- tol County All-Star selection. Capt. Dick Riley, the mainstay of our forward wall all year not only was given a berth on the Bristol County squad but was mentioned in the All-State selections. Ray Peel and Dick Turner were both given mention on these “all” selections. Seniors played a big role in the makeup of this years team. Dick Riley, Ray Peel, Henry Jourdain, Lenny Tchorz, Bill Higham, Aaron Gotlieb, and Gordon Parsons all saw plenty of action. All praise should be heaped upon these athletes who did their best to win to bring honored prestige to our school. fb eae ie ne Peel and Roberts carry against Voke BASKETBALL Hopes were high as the season opened that the 1944-45 Crimson basketball team would line up to the high standards set for it by teams in the past. Although four of the previous seasons first five had grad- uated, Coach Dodge had plenty of fine material on hand to fashion an- other winning contender. New Bedford started like a house-a-fire de- feating Pawtucket West by a sizable score. Then the boys dropped four in a row losing to East Providence, Brockton, Taunton, and Durfee before they could again break into the win column. During this losing streak hope waned in some breasts but those who gave up hope failed to reckon with the “die hard” spirit and capacity to overcome obstacles that has been characteristic of this aggregation. Yes, New Bedford came back. We took eight in a row — Taunton, Brockton, East Providence, Attleboro, and Fairhaven among our victims. At this writing we still have a replay with Durfee on tap. The team has come back so remarkably from its early season dol- drums that it is still very much in the running for the coveted bid to play in the M. I. T. tournament. With its terrific fast brake style of play the Crimson always makes an exciting game out of any contest. Jerry Brault and Ray Peel carry the senior banners onto the court when they play in the first five. Other seniors who are always ready, willing and very able to take over when called upon, include Dick Riley, Ed “Curly” Burns, Kenneth Hanson, and Gene McCarthy. 80 Action in Voke game. BASEBALL First row—left to right:—Robinson, Riley, Roberts, Zubrisky, Crompton, Bean, Mederios, Silva, Brault. Second row:—Downey, Smith, Dennis, J. Camacho, McCarthy, Mahoney, Harris, Langlois, Bettencourt, Manning. Third row:—Epstein, Shapiro, Rebello, Moniz, A. Comacho, Chausse. As soon as the baseball season ends and the ground begins to thaw, a crew of hopefuls armed with bats and balls and gloves will head for Sargent Field with dreams of making the squad and starring for N. B. H.S. The past season was quite successful for New Bedford and the sports public is looking for great things from this coming team. Beating a strong Durfee team in two out of three contests and the no-hit-no-run performance of Jerry Brault, proved to be the highlights of the past sea- son. If everything goes as expected, seniors will play a big role in the coming campaign. Brault will be playing his last season as will such other standuts as Don Zubrisky, Stuart Crompton, Eugene McCarthy, and Len Roberts. 82 ‘3 ' 1—Typing 341 4—Girls look!
