AU MESSAGE, FROM OUR® PRINCIPAL The fifth class to be graduated from this school since the momentous event at Pearl Harbor started the greatest war in history finds the world still a long way from the peace and freedom to which we are all looking forward. Many members of this class are already doing their part in the work that will eventually secure this end; many more will follow them. Those of the class who cannot take an active part with the fighting forces will carry on to the best of their ability in the tasks that must be done on the home front. The individual members of this class have been aiding the war effort by investing one hundred percent in «the purchase of war stamps here in school. They will continue to carry on this patriotic effort in the days following graduation. Their efforts, whether in the past, present or future stamp the members of the class of January, 1944, as fine, loyal examples of real American youth. A. R. Dorman FACULTY ALLISON R. SLUDENTS GOUNGIL The Student Council, is the student governing body of our school. It is the most demo- cratic organization in the school. It compiles the rules which the students must obey, and offers suggestions and ideas which would further the welfare of the school. Membership is obtained in this body by an election of each class for students to repre- sent them. A Prosecuting Attorney and a Defense Attorney compose part of the Court. This term the officers are: Judge—Robert Saltmarsh Prosecuting Attorney—Edith Rubin Defense Attorney—John Marmaras Attendance Officer—Elsie Rodrigues Clerk of Court—Mariam Lampert Members of the Jury—Virginia Callas, Frank Golen, Jean Mahoney,Ella White, Joseph James Baptista, Jr. The graduates in the Student Court are: Edith Rubin and Elsie Rodrigues. 24 THE CRIMSON LOG GIRT SeChAGUE The purpose of the Junior and Senior Girl’s Leagues is to teach all the girls the spirit of serving their neighbors in usefulness of living, joyousness of giving, and readiness in serving. Eyidence of this is shown by choice of their committees, such as the Sol-E-Mar Welfare, So- cial, Library, Hospitality, City Mission, Health, Civic and Membership. After the filled application is brought before the board and a unanimous vote is received, a girl may be admitted. Officers of the Senior Girl’s League for Juniors and Seniors are: Pres- ident, Eileen Lyons; Vice-President, Pauline Auger; Secretary, Barbara Crowe; Treasurer, Lucy Palmieri. Officers for the Junior Girl’s League are: President, Nancy Ashley; Vice-President, Dor- een Fredette; Secretary, Treasurer, Jacqueline Smith. The seniors who are graduating in the Girl’s League Organization are:—Pauline Douglas, Yvonne Gagnon, June McAlpine, Gertrude Parks, Elsie Rodrigues, Edith Rubin, Jacqueline Bougie, Rita Morris. PANDO MERIGANRGEORUS The purpose of the organization is best stated by Mr. Baptiste, the director, ““The aim of the organization is to desseminate the spirit of the Americas through its music.” It is be- lieved that the Chorus is the only one of its kind in the nation. The activities of the Pan American Chorus are varied, singing for all sorts of functions outside of school, for auditorium periods, for soldiers at the U. S. O. Houses, and last summer, they broadcast a program direct to South America. The seniors in the Pan American Chorus are: Marjorie Camara, Aida Ribeiro. BAND The New Bedford High School Band plays at most of the football games, auditorium periods, parades, and civic affairs in the High School Auditorium. This organization has the distinction of being the oldest and most popular in the school. It has gained distinction and honor from outstanding musical sources. Mr. Clarence W. Arey is the able conductor. The following leave the Band when they graduate in January: Lois Taylor, Cynthia Gerstenzang, David Meltzer, Cynthia Caton, Antone Pereira. JANUARY - - - 1944 pe JUNIOR RED CROSS The object of the Junior Red Cross is to spread comfort and relief to those in need. Many of its projects are working in unison with the war effort. Learning first aid, rolling band- ages, providing kits for our boys going into the service and collecting books are only a few of the many services performed by the club. The director who is helping this remarkable work is Miss Marion E. Lord. The officers this term are: President, Miriam Lampert; Vice-President, Nanette Tarle; Secretary, Gertrude Parks; Treasurer, Ethel Correira. CRIMSON COURIER The “Crimson Courier” the only student periodical in our school, is published by the Honor Society. The Editor-in-chief is Albert Rosenthal, and he is assisted by a staff of col- umn editors, feature and sports editors, and inquiring reporters. This paper has met with considerable success in High School. Probably the main reason for its success is the quality which is seldom found in a secondary school paper. The faculty advisor is Miss Susan Shennan. The graduating seniors are: Albert Rosenthal, Stanley Littlefield, Andy O’Neil, Elaine Sylvia, Edith Rubin, Arthur Garty, Constance Hindle, Rita Morris, Lew Schwartz, Dorothy Zolt, Marilyn Pope, Casmira Gilmette, Elizabeth Gunderson. DEBATING SOCIETY The Alpha Debating Society is another popular organization in the school. Its purpose is to give its members a thorough training in public speaking and debating. It supplies material for the Varsity Debating Team which is under the direction of Mr. Ringdahl. Discussions, readings, open forums are carried out at its meetings. The Society is presided over by: President, Pearl Montrond; Vice-President, Eli Samuel; Secretary, Elaine Sylvia; Treasurer, Albert Rosenthal. Its faculty advisor is Miss Stawasz. The graduating seniors are: Jack Shapiro, Albert Rosenthal, Elaine Sylvia, David Meltzer, Elsie Rodrigues. 26 THE CRIMSON LOG i (Op ES NGy The Reserve Officers Training Corps, now an important part of our country’s training for the Armed Forces, is indeed a credit to our school. The object of the corps is to give young men a basic knowledge and training of the military science and tactics. Their activities consist of picking the prize squad of the battalion, the rifle squad, which has gained outstanding recognition in competition, the semi-annual ball, the newly organized body-building course, known as the “Commando Training,” and the Federal Inspection. Lieutenant Edward S. Irwin is the Professor of Military Science and Tactics and is as- sisted by Staff Sergeant Harold G. Kendall. The battalion commander is Cadet Major Stan- ley Littlefield. The graduating seniors in the R. O. T. C. are: Cadet Major Stanley Littlefield; Captain John Marmaras; Captain Philip Madeiros; Captain Antonio Gracia; First Lieutenant Raymond Bisallion; First Sergeant Constantine Rampias; First Lieutenant Edward Chartier; PFC. Ar- nold Epstein; Captain Alfred Ferreira; Sergeant Stephen. Mendoza. VICTOR YesGORPS The purpose of the New Bedford High School Victory Corps is to coordinate all war- time activities in the High School. It is only for students who are doing everything they can to aid in war work. As part of its war-time program, the Victory Corps, in cooperation with the R. O. T. C. organized a course in military drill for Junior and Senior girls, with a program of physical fitness. To raise funds to defray the expenses of organization, a successful concert was given by the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra with Miss Antceta Shea and Joseph Ponte, 3rd as guest artists. It was held on November 21. This was the second in these series of concerts. JUNIOR MINUTE MEN Perhaps the first in the country of its kind, the Junior Minute Men Organization has continued to bring the students of New Bedford High School closest to the War. Their reason for existence is to promote the sale of War Bonds and War Savings Stamps. But the Junior Minute Men have not confined their activities solely to this sale, they have cooperated in every way possible with the Senior Minute Men of Greater New Bedford. Last February, 1943, the school received the Minute Man Flag, awarded by the United States Treasury Department. Only those schools which have ninety per cent of the student body buying at least one stamp every month can fly this flag. The Junior Minute Men have pledged themselves to the task of keeping the Minute Man Flag flying for the duration of the War. The workers under the direction of Mr. King, faculty advisor, are: Chairman, Irving Miller; Records, Betty Mader, Elizabeth Goldrick, Carol Hill, Martin Falk, Mary R. Costa, Francis Viegas, Harry Wade, Richard Lopas; Publicity, Irene Sheehan, Pauline Auger; Audi- tor, Ernest Viera. JANUARY - - - 1 944 27 tae, MY THANKS While lying here, in deep, sublime content, I feel afloat, as clouds above do soar, Sweet peace that seemed to me from heaven sent, As quietness that our free souls adore. This solitude made me begin to think, How fortunate, in peace, it is to live, While those across the sea, are on the brink Of death, with others ready their all to give. The noise and din of battle rends the sky, As we about our daily chores do go, Our thanks and praise we give to God on high, While some afar this peace will never know. My thoughts return, and now my dream is o’er, May heaven guide our peace forever more. For the most part, the games were played in the near vicinity. The nine was sparked by Mickey Sullivan and included the following seniors: Victor Chausse, Denny Moniz and Harold Cooper. Lou Rebello, Mickey Sullivan, James Downey, James Ryan, Gene Sullivan, Harold Coop- er, and Antone Pina comprised the starting nine. New Bedford won eight games and lost six. Ne Dee pp: N.B. The Crimson made a good showing but its performance was not the same as those of the past few years. A lack of veteran material shows in the lineup. The only real veteran is Lou Rebello. Coach Dodge usually comes up with a good basketball team and we feel sure that the Red and White will win a good share of their games. Because of mid-term graduation, there are no members of the senior class among the players. 1943-44 SCHEDULE Cranston West Pawtucket, Brockton, West Pawtucket, Vocational, Taunton, Durfee, At- tleboro, Durfee, Brockton, Fairhaven, Taunton, Attleboro, Vocational, Fairhaven. All aboard for a four year cruise on the largest ship available, the School Ship N. B. H. S., for a trip over the Sea of Education. “Twas a fine January morning in the year nineteen hundred and forty when we set sail. We elected the following officers to lead us: Richard Kaufman, President; Jane Ashley, Vice-President; William Donahue, Treas- urer. Edward Cook, Morton Black and Constance Hindle represented us in the Student Council. During the first six months of our cruise, we sailed along with a good wind, and with the aid of our teachers soon reached the end of the first term. In September, nineteen hundred and forty we set sail again and in January nineteen hun- dred and forty-one we were stopped by another ship so that they might transfer some of their passengers to our ship. They were junior high school graduates. Again at this time we elected officers to lead us. They were John Joyce, President; Frank Marsden, Vice-President; Cynthia Gerstenzang, Secretary; and Kenneth Rowbottom, Treasurer. Since we were older and now a little bit more prominent than the year before we were allowed to have four mem- bers instead of three represent us in the Student Council. Constance Hindle, Beverly Smed- stead, John Marmaras and David Meltzer were chosen for these positions. We had been so occupied with our cruise and the places we had stopped to partake in such activities as the Debating Society, the Dramatic Society, the Band, the Orchestra, R. O. T. C., Girls’ League and Junior Red Cross as well as basketball, football and track that be- fore we realized it we had been travelling for a year and a half and summer vacation was up- on us once again. In September when we started anew we were still flying under the flag of Sophomores but in January we hailed under the proud title of Juniors. The waters were more ruffled because of the high winds of extra curricula activities, and once more election day was at hand. Those who were victorious at the polls were Frank Marsden, President; Constance Hindle, Vice-President; Lois Taylor, Secretary; Edward Andrews, Treasurer. Five worthy members of the crew were elected representatives to the Student Council. They were Elizabeth Gun- derson, Pauline Baines, Albert Rosenthal, Jack Shapiro and Shirley Lord. For the next six months we sailed along very smoothly under our flag of Juniors. Then once more summer popped up just when we needed a rest. In September all our shipmates went aboard anxious to finish the last lap of our junior status and experience the honor that goes with the high rank of Seniors. Well, they say, “Everything comes to him who waits’ so sure enough in January we were promoted to Seniors. This time those placed at the helm were Stanley Littlefield, President; Sol Brody, Vice-Presi- dent; Edith Rubin, Secretary; Edward Andrews, Treasurer. However, before we had gone very far, our treasurer and several of the crew left us bound for another port. They were going on a special mission so that our ship and others like it might continue to sail the Sea of Education without molestation. We chose Florence Nelson to fill the vacancy. Six of our shipmates were chosen to represent us in the Student Council. They were Elizabeth Se aie George Dalrymple, Winifred Brown, Albert Rosenthal, David Meltzer and Doro- thy Zolt. JANUARY - - - 1944 31 3 9066 00057 0610 ° Near the end of the cruise, Mr. Dorman read us a list of those who had reached the top and were to be graduated with honor. The two who led the group in the College Building were Albert Rosenthal and Constance Hindle and the two who led the group in the Commer- cial Building were Vivian Chassey and Norma Pierce. As we neared the port where we leave our friends, we held our Prom and Banquet. On January twenty-seventh, nineteen hundred and forty-four we came to the end of our scholas- tic cruise when we reached Graduation Island. Here we all parted, each one of us taking different roads yet hoping to meet again some day and recall the pleasures of our trip. He has been to us a friend and confidant, taking upon his shoulders all our troubles and difficul- ties. But that which endeared him most to us is his unfailing sense of humor, bolstering us up and encouraging us on when the going was tough. No man could ask for a better friend, nor could any class ask for a finer advisor than Walker B. Trafton, our friend and advisor. = ES@ARES Your sails were grayed with sea spray and the storm, And as they filled with ocean breezes fair Your broad and billowing sheets took on the form Of old men’s weathered jowls blown full of air. The salty deck was warm, the wind was low And when I stretched myself along your length, The falling motion of your dipping bow Made me to dream. Your ropes with all their strength Pulled taut; Their creaking in the cleats did not Disturb my drowsy thoughts, nor did the groan Of wood on wood. Such brief release ’'d sought Before, and I had found it there alone. I long at times to leave my cares and flee Away with you upon the restful sea. Helen Bee Larson N. B. H. S. 744 DEDICATION 1KG. His methodic manner and his untiring efforts to the task before him in spite of all obstacles have given us, his past pupils and friends, a signpost by which we may be guided in these troubled times. i = vt fe) = Ba wa ALLISON R. To join its ranks a student must have highest scholarship and he must possess qualities of leadership, service, and character. Election to this society is one of the highest honors which can be bestowed upon a student. The organization is a powerful influence for good in the school. One of its cutstanding activities is the coaching by Honor Society members of students who are behind in specific subjects. The school newspaper, the Crimson Courier, is also the result of a good job of organizing done by members of this society. The Honor Society’s main purpose is to serve as a goal toward which students may aspire and thereby exert their energies to the utmost, and it fulfills its mission nobly. THE ALPHA DEBATING SOCIETY Seated—Paul Milman, Bernard Portnoy, Pearl Montrond, Carolyn Seth, Salven Meninsky. 2nd row—Joan Atchison; Beryl Gleckman, Minerva Russell, Rosalind Poll, Beatrice Pereira, Jerome Hertz. 3rd row—Alan Rothstein, Donald Pearce, Melvin Levine. “The afhrmative will prove’ — ‘But the negative denies” — ‘The affirmative has shown” — “But the negative contends” — and so it goes whenever the members of the Alpha Debating Society (or of its branch, the Varsity Debating Team) gather together. Some might find discussions on politics, economics, military strategy, government, and such rather boring things: but the orators of the debating society revel in such things. Beatrice Pereira, Bernice Breault, and Pearl Montrond, all of the 8’s representation, remember fondly those sessions in Room 134 when words took wing, sarcasm stung, and often two or more members seemed on the verge of forgetting their theory that words can be as powerful as blows. Pearl will also recall with Irving Miller and “Buzzy” Sadow the term when they served together on the team and Irving took Sacred Heart Academy in Fall River by storm, while “Buzzy” a few weeks later quaked before the powerful senior dynamos which represented Durfee that season, Nor will the annual Hallowe’en “Spook Party” put on by this club be for- gotten by any student, whether or not he attended the dances, for the publicity stunts in the auditorium (remember the all-ghost cheering squad) were enjoyed by all. The 8’s leave this club with fond memories, a broader background, a knowledge of parliamentary procedure and debating technique, and that all important requisite, poise. 53 54 ho LO GRAG: The pride of the N. B. H. S. is its outstanding R. O. T. C. unit. A trim, erect, and smart-looking organization of young men interested in gaining a military background, it ranks as one of the best units in the state. The R. O. T. C. teaches its members that ancient but so true maxim that one must be able to command oneself before one can command others. Among _ the youths in the graduating class who have learned this lesson well and have become senior officers in the R. O. T. C. are Major Foster Herman, Captain Adjutant Charles Atchison, and Capt. Edward Oliveira. The R. O. T. C., however, is also interested in the social as well as the military aspects of things. It sponsors the two outstanding social events of the school year, the Semi-Annual Officers’ Ball. These brilliant, gay, and colorful affairs climax a term of hard work and achievement for the lads of the R. O. T. C. As the boys leave for service in Uncle Sam’s Armed Forces they will look back on their R. O. T. C. experiences with pride and joy. The activities of the R. O. T. C. t his term have included a rifle match with the University of Vermont, which our boys won, and participation in the Hearst Trophy Match. GAMS Tired muscles, sore feet, and sunburned faces, often these have been the result of weary miles trudged by members of the Girls’ Auxiliary Military Service of N. B. H. S. The girls, however, have proved that they can take it as well as their rivals, the boys in the R. O. T. C., and they wear their uniforms proudly. Never will any Gam forget her first parade — the martial music, the waving flags, the smiling on-lookers, and the indescribable feeling that comes when one is marching along in step with a group of her friends and fellows. Several girls in the 8’s class may remember the Gams as the organization which enabled them to again wear that much coveted size 12. Others may remember the Gams for giving them training which will be useful to them in the Wacs, Waves, or some other woman’s military service. But whatever she remembers the Gams for, every girl will sooner or later be thankful for the training and discipline which she received in its ranks. 55 56 SRUDEN Pee@UINGIE Seated—David Groves, Jane Beverly Giles, Irving Miller, Bernice Breault 2nd row—Leonard Pimental, Royal Evans, Samuel Genensky, Cecile Charbonneau, Paul Atchison, Raymond Chartier, Jesse Epstein 3rd row—Harold Carnforth, Raymond Laliberte, Francis Winiaski, Edward Harrington, John Riley, Sybil Krivoff 5th row—Robert Saltmarsh, Noah Minkin In the past term through the efforts of the senior class, the Student Council has taken immense strides towards its goal of a truly democratic school government. The enterprising president, Irving Miller, with the aid of Bruce Borden, Noah Minkin, Jesse Epstein, Bernice Breault, Jack Riley, and Bob Saltmarsh has led the council in its many achievements. Among the most outstanding was the purchase of a sound system and records to be used in auditorium periods and at school dances. The lighting of the school was investigated by a special committee and its findings were turned over to the School Committee. Another committee worked on a handbook to be distributed to in- coming Freshmen, to aid in acquainting them with the rules of the school, the extra curricula activities, and so forth. The Student Council was also responsible for organizing the Victory Corps. SEO E NT COUR LE Seated—Sandra Rusitzky, Miriam Lampert, Virginia Callas First row—Sh irley Horton, Robert Saltmarsh, Jean Mahoney Naturally no member of the senior class ever had occasion to be called up before the Student Court.(?) Not one of the seniors ever stood before the chief justice with quivering knees, his heart in the pit of his stomach and his countenance done up in a bright rosy hue. The 8’s may have had nightmares about such an experience, but they never actually lived through it. (After all, how many people do live after a session before the Student Court!) No, the seniors somehow survived their term in high school without this thrilling experience. Therefore, their memories of this organization will be limited to what they gleaned of it when they were merely part of the audience at the trials or maybe part of the court itself. Bob Saltmarsh will be remembered as the dignified chief justice who presided over the court; Virginia Callas as the hard-hearted, justice-demanding prosecuting attorney; Miriam Lampert as the sympathetic, fast-talking defense attorney; and Jean Mahoney as the somber and busy probation officer. These seniors, together with the rest of the court met in the old study hall every Friday and meted out sentences to all students who had received traffic tickets from members of the Traffic Squad. Usually, seventh periods or detention rooms were given as penalties and probation sentences were given for first or minor offenses. To all future senior classes, the 8’s extended the wish that their memories of the Student Court may be as pleasant (?) and impersonal (?) as those of the grad- uating class. 57 58 TRAFFIC SQUAD Seated—Charles Trafford, Jack Riley, Arthur Messier, Robert Pearson 2nd row—Irene Sheehan, Dorothy Kavanaugh, Roberta Sibor, Joyce O’Neil, Patricia Farrell 3rd row—Grace Tripp, Flora Sylvia If during your stay in N. B. H. S. you ever combed your hair in cafeteria, chewed gum within the walls of the school, ran or whistled in the corridors, went up stairs labeled “DOWN,” or committed any other action contrary to the laws of the school, you probably met up with a member of the Traffic Squad. This genial, but conscientious representative of the law in N. B. H. S., was in the right place at the right time. He probably gave you a pleasant little lecture and kindly warned you not to commit such a misdemeanor again. Perhaps, maybe, you were wise and followed his advice and lived happily ever after; but then perhaps, maybe, you weren’t so wise and you somehow happened to repeat your offense a second and third time. If the latter is true, you probably sooner or later fell afoul of the same member of the traffic squad who had upbraided you before and this time you found that he was not so genial. Most likely you walked away from that second interview with a traffic ticket in your pocket and a session before the Student Court to look forward to. Yes, that is the efhicient manner in which the Traffic Squad handles lawbreakers in N. B. H. S. The graduating chief of the squad, Jack Riley, has served the school faithfully and well in his oftentimes difficult and thankless position and this fact is recognized by his fellow classmates. JUNIOR RED CROSS Seated—Bernice Soares, Nannette Tarle, Betty Brimley 2nd row—Mary Silva, Beatrice Pereira, Pearl Montrond, Jackie Bassett, Emily Mello, June Senna 3rd row—Eileen Cabral, Virginia Mardar, Richard Moore, Grace Tripp, Irene Wak These students bind their victims in yards of bandage in their first-aid classes; they collect rubber, scrap iron, paper, and tin for the various victory drives; they make wringer toys for the children of soldiers; they fill Christmas boxes for refugee children in Europe; they make games and afghans for the soldiers in hospitals; and they help their Senior Red Cross Chapter in every other way they can. They are members of the Junior Red Cross. The 8’s who were active in this organization were dependable, Bernice Soares, the president; sparkling Betty Brimley, the secretary; sympathetic Nannette Tarle, the vice-president; loquacious Pearl Montrond, chairman of the program committee; conscientious Richard Moore, chairman of the work committee; and capable Miriam Lampert, ex-president. These 8’s served in a worthwhile organization and reaped the warm feeling of satisfaction which one feels when he helps a fellow human less fortunate than himself. De 60 CHESS GLUB Seated—Byron Tepper, Clarence Hodgkins, Ray Shapira, Alan Rothstein, Burton Gerstenzang Ist row—Warren Shine, Alvin Braudy, David Shulman, Louis Rusitzky 2nd row—Samuel Genensky, Donald Pearce, Peter Tsouprake Struggling for existence is the chess club of N. B. H. S. It is composed of a dozen members (more or less—usually less). These stalwart individuals work at their play to improve their technique of playing the oldest game in the world. One of the most inconsistent members of the club was Noah Minkin who would drop in for a game occasionally. The club has been mainly supported by underclassmen who we hope will continue their interest in the organization and bring it back to the prom- inence it once enjoyed. THE CRIMSON COURIER Seated—Barbara Burke, Miriam Lampert, Paul Chervinsky, Pearl Montrond 2nd row—Christine Gartaganis, Virginia Callas, Nannette Tarle, Jesse Epstein, Alice Zaruk, Irving Miller 3rd row—Gloria Shine, Betty Dalzel!, Anita Trufelman, Roberta Sibor, Barbara Meade, Margaret Rapoza 4th row—lIrene Sheehan, Dot Kavanaugh, Dot Lassow, Minerva Russell, Joanne Goulart, Rosalind Poll, Gilda Mark, Foster Herman 5th row—Robert Saltmarsh, Phillip Cohen, Ernest Vieira Since this book is primarily for seniors there is no need to expound on just what a grand, glorious, and sensational newspaper the Crimson Courier has been up to now. That task has already been satisfactorily completed by those great publicity men, Jesse Epstein and Paul Chervinsky. Paul was the typical editor-in- chief of the Crimson Courier—swashbuckling, gay, and debonair at times, but a tyrant when your copy was due. Jesse was the sport’s editor, a witty, talkative, and popular chap, who was very easy-going until he was riled, and then — (ahem!) The girl who could be counted on to edit the reperters’ copy with proper regard for English gram- mar, punctuation, and news value was the assistant editor, Miriam Lampert. An attractive blonde, Miriam wasn’t only dependable, but also friendly, charming, and a very fitting aide-de-camp for Paul. Eli Samuels, the other assistant editor, had com- plete charge of the paper’s make-up. Pearl Montrond was the club editor, who covered the news of the social ups and downs about school. The business manager was Nannette Tarle, a cute brunette who kept the paper out of the red; and the position of column editor was occupied by a clever and vivacious minx, Gloria Shine. The typing was done by the business-like though attractive trio consisting of Alice Zaruck, Betty Dalzell, and Dorothy Lassow; while Bob Saltmarsh, Virginia Callas, and Phil Cohen, members of the Board of Directors, served in an advisory capacity. So there they are, the 8’s of the Crimson Courier Staff who “kept the presses rolling,” improved the paper’s style, and learned cooperation and newspaper tech- nique. Sum them all up and you will have a fun-loving, popular, and incidentally, talented group. 61 62 SUNI@REAGIRES SERAGUE Seated—Bernice Soares, Barbara Crowe, Agnes McCann, Lucy Palmeiri 2nd row—Shirley Horton, Audrey Craig, Rita Oliver, Eileen Lyon, Noreen Smith, Sandra Rusitzky, Nannette Tarle, Miriam Lampert, Virginia Callas, Christine Gartaganis 3rd row—Barbara Burke. Natalie Swistak, Alice Agostinho, Helen Garnett, Betty Goldrick, Marjorie Fell, Jean Mahoney, Barbara Yantes 4th row—Marion Mooney, Joyce O’Neil, Anita Trufelman, Roberta Sibor, Marilyn McCarthy, Shirley Pustilnick, Joanne Goulart, Marcia Rodell, Lillian Wilson, Irene Wak Sth row—Ellen Galligan, Carol Hill, Patricia Farrell, Betty Brimley, Jacqueline Bassett, Pauline Auger, Irene Marotte 6th row—Gloria Vinho, Pierrette Bougie, Pauline Gamache, Marjorie Small, Irene Sheehan, Dorothy Kavanaugh, Dawn Batchelder The young ladies in the Senior Girls’ League are banded together in an attempt to aid in serving the community and to develop their own characters. Outstanding among their activities is the work done to bring happiness and comfort to the patients at Sol-E-Mar Hospital. Throughout the year members also help out at the Red Cross and City Mission, giving parties for the less fortunate and sponsoring affairs for the benefit of others. Relaxation for the girls comes in preparing for one of the big social events of the school year, the annual Cotton Ball. At this event the King and Queen of Cotton are chosen. The members of the league who are graduating look back on a period of genial companionship, good times, and worthwhile accomplishment. JUNIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE Seated—Lucille Hillman, Renée Lampert, Dorinne Fredette, Nancy Ashley, Mary Lind Ker- win, Jean Hathaway, Rachel Pease 2nd row—Harriette Hayward, Betty Barker, Sybil Krivoff, Gilda Mark, Beverly Ross, Ruth Prince 3rd row—Eleanore Barette, Nancy Jones, Barbara Heinz, Joan Metzger, Anita Goldberg, Razell Black, Joan Atchison This organization is made up of Freshman and Sophomore girls who wish to follow in the footsteps of their older sisters in the Senior Girls’ League. Their ac- tivities and aims are similar to those of the seniors and they work just as con- scientiously. Knitting, sewing for refugees, filling Red Cross boxes, studying First Aid, all of these activities keep the girls busy. The sense of responsibility to her community, country, and fellowmen which a girl gains from membership in this organization will serve her well in years to come. 63 64 JUNIOR MINUTE MEN Seated—Bernice Soares, Mary Costa, Carol Hill, Pauline Auger, Irving Miller, Christina Gartaganis, Frimet Horvitz, Beverly Secaul, Nannette Tarle 2nd row—Sandra Rusitz'y, Barbara Crowe, Ba-bara Yantes, Elsie Robins, Marguerite Sylvia, Elizabeth Goldrick, Elizabeth Mader, Jesse Epstein, Paul Chervinsky, Warren Shine 3rd row—Jeannette Otoclki, Dawn Batchelder, Alice Agostinho, Emma Walker, Elizabeth Dalzell, Richard Moore, Francis Viegas, Richard Lopes, Sol Shwartz, Phillip Cohen 4th row—Foster Herman, Dorothy Lassow, Phyllis Madsen, Anne Sylvia, Zelma Cohen, Ruth Moody, Nettie West, Barbara Meade, Norma Warburton, Madeleine Rainville, Audrey Brodsky ith row—Howard Dyer, Donald Pearce, Albert Gustafson, Lillian LaRiviere, Irene Wolanski, Wanda Szpotowski, Dennis Vieira, Irene Sheehan, Ernest Vieira, John Riley 6th row—Edmund Rose, Harry Wade, Ernest’ Trombly, Thomas Sears, Alfred Jones, Robert f£a'tmarsh, Robert Handford N. B. H. S. is very proud of its organization known as the Junior Minute Men. This organization has been outstanding in the selling of war bonds and stamps and_ because of its efforts, the N. B. H. S. has the best record for a high school of its size in the country. It is understood that the work of the Junior Minute Men is beyond the line of duty. To the individual Junior Minute Man much credit must be given because of time, effort, and responsibility assumed in handling vast sums of money. Therefore, every member of the 8’s class who has aided this organization in its patriotic service can be proud of his part in its achievements. Special credit goes to Irving Miller, chairman; Pauline Auger, publicity manager; Carol Hill; and the organization’s adviser, Mr. William King. DRAMATIC CLUB Seated—Betty Brimley, El’en Galligan, Pearl Montrond, Betty Gabriel 2nd row—Ruth Prince, Barbara Yantes, Irma Lipsett, Rachel Pease, Etta Haberman, Virginia Callas, Christine Gartaganis 3rd row—Marilyn Jacobs, Jean Mahoney, Sybil Krivoff, Gilda Marks, Pauline Liss, Jacqueline Bassett, Jane Giles 4th row—Dorothy Lassow, Bernice Breault, Beatrice Pereira, Paul Chevinsky, Phillip Cohen Pauline Auger The curtain is about to go up, a hush falls over the audience, and backstage you shiver, discover that your voice is trapped in your throat, and vow that, voice or no voice, you can’t remember a single line of your part anyway. Then suddenly you find yourself upon the stage with all eyes upon you; you realize you must do or die; and finally, after what seems a lifetime, a miracle occurs and you speak! Such an experience is one of the many vivid memories which the 8's who took the cruise on the battle-scarred, but stalwart craft, the Dramatic Club, carry with them as they embark on new and bigger adventures. Also outstanding among their memories is the production of the rooting-shooting Western “The Arizona Cowboy”; in which Phil Cohen learned that a villain has his moments, Betty Brimley was instructed in the art of “embrassant,’’ Pearl Montrond secretly swooned when e’er her father, Big Chief (Gordon Milliken) uttered a deep-voiced “Ugh,” Noah Minkin TRIED to keep the scenery from tumbling down, Ellen Galligan made lovely atmosphere, Paul Chervinsky discovered how to get the most out of a washboard, and Jean Mahoney discovered how to get the most out of Paul. Nor is the spine-tingling murder mystery “Nine Girls” apt to be forgotten by any member of the class. All in all the cruise, taken by the 8’s in the Dramatic Club, was one of tragedy, laughter, and romance; and they reached their destination, the port of good fellowship, with a greater love and more thorough understanding of the drama and its fascinating attributes. 65 . : i ’ i : } BAND Although lack of transportation facilities did not permit the N. B. H. S. Band to make its usual trips to the regional music festivals and the outing at Boston, we have a great deal of evidence that the Band is still the great organization that it has been in the past. Regardless of all obstacles such as loss of members due to gra duation and changing of rehearsal time to allow for those who work after schoo! the Band still carries on. None of us will forget those long lamented and gruelling marches on Memorial Day and Armistice Day. Neither will any of those who were picked to go ever forget those outings at Tabor. The Seniors of the Band who were most active were Maureen Schwartz, Ned Livingston, Phil Cohen, Paul Chervinsky and Bob Saltmarsh. The Band as an organization has provided instruction and enjoyment for its members. It has placed before them a never-to-be-forgotten example of the necessity of co-operation and has proved that, “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” PRENGHSGEUB Seated—Pauline Gamache, Roberta Sibor, Marilyn McCarthy, Gloria Vinho 2nd row—Rosalind Poll, Minerva Russell, Elaine Lipton, Florence Milman 3rd row—Pierrette Bougie, Anne Gillis, Eileen Frates, Angela Miller The French Club, composed of a group of “‘jeune filles charmantes”, has explored the mysteries of the beautiful French language, its romance, and tragedy. Many enjoyable sessions were spent listening to records of gay and lovely French songs in which the girls often joined. La Marseillaise, the national anthem of France, was a great favorite. By subscribing to the French newspaper the club keeps up with current events and the latest news concerning French art and literature. The meetings are completely conducted in French to give the members greater facility with the language. Various games and puzzles are also enjoyed by the members. Pauline Auger is the only graduating member of the French Club. Concerning her experience in the organization she says, “Because of the French Club I faced the College Board Examination in French with only a minimum of terror, and that’s saying a lot!” 67 INTER-CLUB COUNCIL The newest and most representative organization of the school is the Inter- Club Council. The purpose of the council is to bring about closer collaboration be tween the various clubs and organizations engaged in extra-curricula activities, to increase interest in these activities among the students, and to further participation in the war effort. Representatives of all groups in the school are on the board. Francis J. Viegas has been chairman of the council; Helen Garnett has been secretary; and Lucy Palmeira has been treasurer. The members of the graduating class who served on the council and the groups they represented were as follows: Bernice Breault, president of the 8’s; Robert Saltmarsh, president of the Honor Society and chief justice of the Student Court; Lucy Palmeira, treasurer of the Victory Corps Fund; Irving Miller, president of the Student Council and chairman of the Junior Minute Men; Foster Herman, major of the R. O. T.C.; Pearl Montrond, president of the Debating Society; Helen Garnett, major of the G. A. M. S.; Dennis Moniz and Luiz Rebello, athletic representatives; Betty Brimley, president of the Dramatic Club; Bernice Soares, president of the Senior Girls’ League and chairman of the Junior Red Cross; John Riley, chief of the Traffic Squad; Pauline Auger, publicity chairman of the Junior Minute Men. VIGLORVaeOnDs The Victory Corps is an organization which combines all war activities being carried on in the school into one united effort. The national Victory Corps was or- ganized by President Roosevelt and John Studebaker, Commissioner of Education, to unite all the secondary schools in the country in the war effort. The aims of the corps are as follows: 1. To promote training for useful pursuits and for services urgently needed in war time. 2. To increase community responsibility and participation in war effort. 3. To develop precision and thoroughness. 4. To discourage complacent acceptance of school marks. 5. To fully apply the energies of youth to the war program. LEADERSMGEME In spite of its comparative obscurity, Leaders’ Club is one of the most active in the school. The very able leader is Mr. Kelly, the gym instructor, and the members of the organization are especially selected from each gym class by the vote of the class. The boys gather in the gym and enjoy the companionship of their friends, learn new tricks, and strengthen their bodies for future use. They take their knowledge back to their gym classes and aid the boys who are not fortunate enough to belong to Leaders’ Club. The boys, selected to go to Leaders’ Club, enjoy having this extra time in gym and feel that they are gaining something very real and valuable. AUDITORIUM GLEE CLUB Another new organization in the school is the Auditorium Glee Club. It is made up of students who enjoy singing, and it is directed by Miss Janet Ratcliffe, the new music teacher and assistant supervisor of music in this city. The concerts given by the group this past term were much enjoyed by the students and the Auditorium Glee Club is considered a definitely worthwhile addition to the school. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club has been hit harder by the war than any other organiza- tion in school. This is not only because of the number of students who are working after school, but also because of the lack of materials. The club formerly helped students interested in photography to improve their pictures, sponsored contests, and provided members with a completely equipped dark room in which to develop their pictures. 68 Study period in the library Would be artists Camera Hounds Would not be chemists Messier and Commercial Class Commercial Mathematicians 69 Seated—Lenny Torche, Joe Bettencourt, George Konstantakos, Lenny Roberts, Steve Cas- sidy, Ray Peal 2nd row—Al Camacho, Jack Mansseur, Phil Mederios, Dick Brault, Al Griffiths, George Dalrymple, Ira Goldstein, Vic Chausse, Fred Gumbs srd row—Joe Kuliga, Charlie Morse, Sol Schwartz, Steve Shapiro, Stan Littlefield, Al Cummings, Herbert Israel, John Watson, Dick Riley, Coach Win Dodge 4th row—Asst. Due to the gasoline and tire shortage we had to arrange two games with both Durfee and Vocational and came out on top in all four, while our three losses were confined to strong Brockton, Cranston, and Wey- mouth teams. Our lone Rhode Island victory was at the expense of Central High of Providence. At the time of this writing we have five of the starting eleven doing their bit in the biggest game of all. Dick Breault, who did a swell job at the pivot post has “command of the situation” with the U. S. Marines, while Ray Hague, Ted Lowney. and Ira Goldstein, all backfield men wear the uniform of the U. S. Navy. Jack Mans- seur, our stalwart guard is also in the Navy. The class of June ’44, may well be proud of its standout athlete, Albert Camacho, who played good enough ball to be chosen All-Bristol County End. His exhibition at the first Durfee game in which he scored the lone touchdown will be remembered by all. Other Seniors who played a big part in the Crimson victories are Herbert Israel, Norman Gamache, Victor Chausse, and Luiz Rebello. Expectations for next year seem promising if only Uncle Sam doesn’t take away anymore standouts such as John Watson and Al Cummings. They are due to be called by the Army Air Corps at any time. 72 Cranston Providence Central Durfee Brockton Vocational Weymouth Opponent 18 N.B. 0 14 20 - Opponen' Vocational 0 Fairhaven 0 Durfee 0 82 WON 6 — LOST 3 N.B. 14 1) 14 Seated—Al Camacho, Dennis Moniz, Jerome Brault, Sid Dennis, Luiz Rebello 2nd row—Mr. Dodge, Bill Cotter, Lenny Tchorz, Ray Peal, Dick Riley, Joe Bettencourt, Gilbert Steele BASKETBALL As N. B. H. S. entered upon its third wartime basketball season things didn’t look any toc good as far as quintets were concerned. We lost our first three games to Rhode Island foes and were taken lightly as a threat for any city or county champ- ionship. Despite this poor beginning the team was able to make an impressive record for itself with fifteen wins and five losses. These records include the two M. I. T. games and also one apiece with the Alumni and the Murphy Club. This year the site of the M. I. T. Tournament was changed and this time to more spacious quarters. The scene of this classic for years to come will be the Boston Garden. The 19th Annual Tournament had N. B. listed as a pushover, but the boys beat Haverhill in their first game and came back in the semi-finals to lose out to Waltham in an overtime period of what the Boston scribes called ‘““The best game of the Tournament”’. The Seniors who were the backbone of the team this year are: “Denny” Moniz, co-captain; Al Camacho, and Luiz Rebello, co-captain. Next year Coach Dadge ex- ects to see many of this year’s members back on the team whose experience insures Pp yi y a bright outlook for N. B. H. S. Most schools have given-up the sport for the duration. The reason for this is that track is the least profitable and least supported feature of high school athletics. However, New Bedford High considers the sport important and intends to preserve it for the duration, but the difficulty of acquiring opposition is an overwhelming one. So for this season the boys wearing the Crimson have only competed with Tabor on a home and home basis. The meet which was held at Tabor was a ‘“‘middie” runaway to the score of 46-8, but the meeting on our indoor track was a l ittle more of a battle, the outcome being a 32-20 score in favor of Tabor. Seniors do not figure in this year’s team so that next year quite a bit is expected of the Sophomores and Juniors who are competing this year. 76 PANIC OY he . ‘ wk Gai i.
