This truth is a fundamental of real citizenship in our democratic form of govern: ment. It is one of the truths that our free school system endeavors to instil] into all the youth of the land. It is well illustrated here in our school by the large number of male members of the faculty and student body who have temporarily dropped the role of instructor and student to don the uniform of the nation’s armed forces, thus to join in the fight that is to protect and to save for future generations those rights and privileges that are so dear to all true Americans. The graduating class of January, 1943, honors them and itself in dedicating ita classbook to them. The harder matched, the greater victory. —Shakespeare thn at ae EGY BS tae ee eee htt i a ee HSER BNC MARA Ce nape PRES!DENT FAITH A. JENNEY Born: November 12, 1924 From: Clarence A. B. H. S. Margaret Darling 35 CLASS HISTORY — JANUARY ‘43 The portals of New Bedford High School swung open to an eager group of Freshmen on a January morn in 1939. It was the Class of January, 1943. We were in Senior High School — but soon we realized that it was for Seniors, and that we were merely Freshmen. After a few weeks of trying to find the elevator, going the wrong way on stairways, we settled down to four years of work. Under the guidance of Mr. Gracia we elected at our first class meeting the following officers: Jane Coulter, president; David Sullivan, vice-president; Edith Ross, secretary; and Rob- ert Conley, treasurer. To the Student Council we elected Willette Banks, Lila Toyfair, and Marjorie Belyea. Our first social affair was the Freshman supper and dance, where we met and became acquainted for our trek through New Bed- ford High School. Ascending the ladder of education we entered upon our Sophomore year. All were working hard and trying to make a name for the Class of January, 1943. Taking time out from our studies we elected Robert Cook, president; Robert Conley, vice-president; Jane Coulter, secretary; and Doris Cobb, treas- urer. Our Student Council representatives were Normand Boucher, Faith Jenny, Max Klein and John Byk. Our adviser for this term was Miss McFadden. First scholastic stars ac- cepted to the Honor Society were Hugh Allison, Mark Rosenthal, and Ruth Maino. 36 Time marched on, and we became the distinguished Juniors. We assumed our role as Juniors with a new class adviser, Mr. Burke. For our class officers we selected Hugh Allison, presi- dent; Edith Ross, vice-president; Jane Coulter, secretary; and Ray Connolly, treasurer. This time representing us were Max Klein, Gertrude Davis, Lela Winograd, Mark Atchison, and Mil- ton Bolton in the Student Council. Those who attained schol- astic honor were Alfred Amaral, Gladys Bennett, Milton Bol- ton, Robert Cooke, Margaret Cygan, George Devine, Beatrice Feingold, Laura Gonsalves, Alice Guerra, Evelyn Martin, David Mendelson, Evelyn Ramalhette, Dorothea Roderick, Leforne Se- queira, Clarice Sharrock, Frank Silva, Jr., Philomena Silvia, Natalie Taber, Esther Waskiewicz, Anne Wilde, William Wilde, Lela Winograd and Frances Wolnick. Now, at last, our three years of climbing brought us to our ultimate destination. We were Seniors. Our good fortunes prevailed with Miss Brady and Miss Cohen leading us through our most exciting and active year. With our elections over we found ourselves under the able guidance of Faith Jenny, president; Mark Atchison, vice president; Jane Coulter, secre- tary; and Ray Connolly, treasurer. Our members in the Stud- ent Council were Gertrude Davis, Willette Banks, David Men- delson, Rae Holden, Edith Ross and Robert Butler. Some of our classmates elected to the Honor Society, were Renato Bar- reto, Lillian Belmarce, John Byk, Manuel DeTerra, John Fonseca, Max Klein, Paul Ramos, Betty Reed, Emily Attallah, Lila Toy- fair, Phyllis Waring, and Bernice Williams. Our first big event of the Senior year — the 8’s Get Together was held on October 14th. We enjoyed dancing and refresh- ments, and all were entertained by the exhibition dancing of Carolyn Haney. As fast as our first three years had gone by, our Senior year passed. Our prom on January 22nd and our banquet, January 25th, climaxed our social life as a class. We reached our final goal on January 28th when we were graduated from New Bedford High School. As we received our diplomas both joy and sorrow were in all our hearts. Stopping to look back over our four years we can have only pleasant memories as the Class of January 1943. O. T. C. This group has brought and always will bring fame and honor to New Bedford High School. Its main object is to give the young men a basic training for other military duties, which at this present time takes on more importance than ever. Their activities include: choosing of the prize squad of the battalion; the well known semi-annual ball; the newly organized, toughening-up course known as the Commando Obstacle Course; and the Federal Inspection, which has designated our battalion an honor unit for several years. Lt. Colonel Lucien H. Taliaferro, U. S. Army Retired, is the Pro. fessor of Military Science and Tactics, and is assisted by Sgt. Harold G. Kendall. The battalion commander is Cadet Major Horatio Murdy. More than ever emphasis is being placed on the training of these boys at the present time, for there is a good chance that they may be our Army Officers in the not too dis- tant future. 43 1—William Pires 2—Raphael Silva 3—Donald McGowen “COMMANDO TRAINING” The newest activity of the R. O. T. C. is a physical toughening course rightly named “Commando Training.’ It's mandatory for each member of the R. O. T. C,, insuring a tough group of young men for the Army very soon. In charge of the training is Mr. Fred Kelly, the athletic director. The course is run by two boys, who are met with these obstacles: four foot running fence vault; traveling the length of the suspended bars; a short run; traveling the length of supported parallel bars; a crawl under a long table; climbing an 18 ft. rope; a straddle vault 3¥%2 feet high; a forward roll; and a run on the track. The boys are timed on the course and are given ratings accordingly. The plan was adopted from colleges where these sort of obstacle courses are part of the training of both the student body and those boys who are in the Naval and Army R. O. a baal Co 44 Raymond Woodhouse, Mr. Sanborn, Leo Walder, Albert Carr, Cameron Gidley PRE-FLIGHT The ending of the regular school classes is just the beginning for the new Pre-Flight Class, which meets with Mr. Sanborn for three-quarters of an hour, five days a week, and really works. For without any doubt it is the toughest class in the school curriculum. The object of the class is to teach the students, including a few girls, the basic prin- ciples of flying. They make model airplanes and learn to recognize all the different types of planes by their silhouette. They study piloting by dead reckoning, radio and celestial navigation, weather and weather forecasting and code use. They use several text books, including a government sponsored set. Before entering this class one requires at least a good foundation in physics and math, including trigonometry. After the class is in full swing, it is expected that one year of the class will be equivalent to about two months work in the actual air training courses. From a former student, it was recommended that special attention be given to the prin- ciples of physics, math, and radio code which are very important in his training for a pilot. 45 JUNIOR MINUTE MEN Perhaps the first in the country of its kind, the Junior Minute Men Organization has continued to bring the students of New Bedford High School closest to the war. Their reason for existence is to promote the sale of War Bonds and War Savings Stamps in the High School. It goes without saying that this organization has met with marked success. Since its organization in February, the sale has been $53,297.90 — a period containing just 29 weeks of actual sales. From September to December 1942, alone, the sale of stamps and bonds was $26,212.30! The stamps are sold two days weekly and bonds are on sale everyday. The workers are under the direction of Mr. King, the Faculty Adviser, and Edwin Kacprzyk, Chairman, and Dorothy Simas, Secretary-Treasurer. Much praise has been given to this group for its outstanding assistance in the war effort of our nation. The school is proud of its Minute Men. 46 Phyllis Waring, Lois Pollard, Lucy Spencer, Helene Oliver, Jean Parsons THE GIRL’S LEAGUE The purpose of the Girl's League is welfare work among the needy families of our students, to stimulate hospitality, to promote the spirit of good fellowship and democracy, and to encourage such activities as will further the interests of the Girl’s League. The membership in the club is granted to any girl who fills a satisfactory application for mem- bership, and passes the Executive Board unanimously, and is in complete sympathy with the ideals and purpose. The Junior Girl's League holds its meeting every Friday at 2 P. M. in 102. The Senior Girl’s League meets every Wednesday in 102 at 2 P. M. There are different committees in the Girl's League. Some of the committees are the hospitality, the Sol-E-Mar, the social, the library, the Red Cross and the City Mission. The hospitality committee welcomes the visitors who enter the school and directs them where they wish to go. The library committee helps Miss Thuman in the library. Each committee has its particular duties which must be carried out by the Girl’s League members. The officers of the league are President, Lois Pollard; Vice-President, Phyllis Waring; and Secretary, Josephine Ashley. Miss Lord is the adviser of the club. 47 Lewis Shwartz, Stanley Siegel, Mark Rosenthal, Albert Rosenthal CRIMSON COURIER The Crimson Courier is published by the Honor Society. Its Editor-in-chief is Mark Rosenthal, ably assisted by Stanley Siegal and Josephine Ashley. The staff consists of a board of directors, a columns editor, a feature and sports editor, and inquiring reporter, and several other reporters. It features a gossip column called the Grapevine, and a col- umn dealing with the activities of the R. O. T. C. The Crimson Courier has met with considerable success in the High School. The reasons for this success are many. Probably the main reason is the quality which is seldom found in a secondary school paper. The business side of the Courier is taken care of by Frances Wolnick. That certainly is a job for a paper with a circulation of over 2000. Eight accountants round out the de- partment. The Board of Directors consists of the president of the Honor Society who is chair- man, ex-officio, the editor-in-chief of the Courier, the three officers of the society and three members elected at large from the Honor Society. 48 “PAN AMERICAN CHORUS” The appreciation and singing of Latin American songs has been given its foundation in New Bedford High School by the popular Pan American Chorus under the direction of Mr. Baptiste. The purpose of the organization is better stated by Mr. Baptiste: ‘‘The aim of the or- ganization is to desseminate the spirit of the Americas through its music.” It is believed that the chorus is the only one of its kind in the nation. The membership of the chorus is not restricted to only those girls who can speak Portuguese and Spanish, but is open to all who like the Latin American Songs. The activities of the Pan American Chorus are vuried, such as singing for all sorts of functions outside of school, for a few auditorium periods each year, for the soldiers at the U. S. O. Houses several times, and last summer, a short wave broadcast direct to South America. 49 DRAMATIC CLUB One of the more popular clubs in the school is the Dramatic Club. Other than create personal enjoyment for members, the club has for its object to teach those interested, the principles of dramatics and play writing. They also learn how to produce a play. Make up and stage planning are included in the training. Much of this experience is of value for future actors, actresses and playwrights. Outside activities include the Annual Spring play, which is the outstanding production of the year. The Fall season has for its highlight the Christmas play. This year the mem- bers have entertained the Service Men at the U. S. O. Center. Officers for this term are: Edith Ross, president; Josephine Ashley, vice-president; Betty Brimley, secretary; and Jerome Lieberman, treasurer. Mr. Bergstrom, Mr. De Rosier, now serving with the U. S. Army, Miss Gray, Miss Bettencourt, and Mrs. Knight are the advisers of the Dramatic Club. 50 BAND The New Bedford High School Band plays at most of the football games, auditorium periods, parades, and civic affairs in the High School Auditorium. This organization has the distinction of being one of the oldest and most popular in the school. It has gained distinction and honor from outstanding musical sources, including Dave Rubinoff, violinist who on a recent visit to the school, proclaimed that the musical group in the High School was one of the finest he had heard in the nation. Mr. Clarence W. Arey is the hard working conductor. 51 HONOR SOCIETY The Honor Society, in its choice of members, purpose, and activities, is similar to a college honorary scholastic society. Although its name does not imply it, the Honor Society is, in a way, a service organ- ization. This is accomplished by the existence of a Study Clinic, designed for the students who require outside assistance with their studies, and which is in operation during the school year. The co-chairmen of the Study Clinic are Jean Parsons and Bernice Williams. The Honor Society has a democratic governing board composed of four student officers, elected each term. Those for the 1942-1943 term are: Stanley Siegal, President; Leforne Sequeira, Vice-President; Lela Winograd, Secretary; Annette Robitaille, Treasurer. Four faculty members comprise the remainder of the board. The Society was organized in the fall of 1927 with Miss Shennan, the Educational Counselor, as advisor. It has been in existence continuously since that time with the same adviser. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the student government of the school. Representatives from each class make up the Council. Most democratic in its operation, the Council listens to grievances, and suggestions for improvements, and other ideas which would further the welfare of the school. Rules which the students must obey or face the Student Court are made by this body of students elected by their class mates to operate the most demo- cratic form of school government in Southeastern Massachusetts. Miss Marion E. Lord and Mr. William E. King are the faculty advisers. STUDENT COURT The Student Court is the arbiter between the students and the Traffic Squad. A working part of our democratic school government, the Court sentences students who have violated a school rule and are found guilty by a board of Associate Justices, consisting of six members and the Chief Justice. A prosecuting attorney and a defense attorney com- pose part of the Court. All the officials found in a Municipal Court are to be found in the Student Court. TRAFFIC SQUAD Harder. working than ever this year, the Traffic Squad has performed its job well, acting as the official caretakers of New Bedford High School halls and students. Their duties are many and varied, such as keeping order and cleanliness in the cafeteria and halls, and keeping order amongst the students during their lunch periods. Because of their many duties, the student council members have joined with the Traffic Squad in keeping order and may be recognized by a badge with a red C on a white background. The advisers are Mr. Beach and Miss Lord. THE JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross is one of the most important clubs in the school. The obiec- tives of this club are to develop social consciousness, to guide humanitarian tendencies, to give practice in assuming social and civil responsibility, to teach and stress the social aspects of positive health and to promote world understanding. The Junior Red Cross has a direct connection with the war. Many of the projects of the Junior Red Cross, while very useful in peacetime, has been found to be of even greater significance in war. They make tags and clothing for disaster victims. The members are participating in the Victory Book Campaign to secure books for U. S. O. reading rooms, ships and naval bases and Red Cross recreation rooms. They made Christmas boxes to send to children over seas, and they made scrap books for men in the services. Miss Lord, who is the adviser of the club, is helping to carry on this splendid work. Miriam Lampert is the President. 92 “RIFLE SQUAD” The Rifle Squad has brought a great deal of honor and fame in former years to New Bedford High School by winning many William Randolph Hearst Trophies which may be seen on the walls of the first floor corridor and in the office of the P. M. S. T., includ- ing first place plaques for 1940, 1941, and 1942. Three teams of 5 men each are selected to represent New Bedford High School in the William Randolph Hearst National R. O. T. C. Rifle Match and The First Service Com- mand Match. Each member of the team fires from four positions in competition: prone, sitting, kneeling, and off-hand varying from five to ten shots. Winners are awarded plaques and gold, silver, and bronze medals for first, second, and third place respectively. We hope that this will be another banner year for the Rifle Squad, and that they keep up their fine record. DEBATING SOCIETY The Debating Society has the distinction of being one of the oldest organizations in the High School. The group is devoted to training members in public speaking and debat- ing. Members of the Society are future material for the Debating Team which is under the sponsorship of Mr. Ringdahl. The wartime function of the Society is the study of the world situation and world problems. Open forums and debates on current questions highlight the activities. Infor- mal discussions and readings also are part of the program. Main subject for discussion is the establishment of a fair and permanent peace. The directors for this term are: Edith Ross, president; Albert Rosenthal, vice-president; Frank Golen, secretary; and Shirley Lord, treasurer. The advisor for the Debating Society is Miss Blaisdell. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club has been an active and interesting club for many years. This year, no less than others, the club has kept up its full and varied program. The aim of the club is to develop the students’ interest in photography. They are taught the funda- mentals of developing, printing, and enlarging photographs. Of course, in preparing to learn these points of photography, the students obtain a liberal education in taking pic- tures and using different cameras. Many times the club has interesting and enlightening lectures from guests who help further the club members’ understanding. This is one club where the experience gained after school is used in life afterward. The United States Army has great use for men who have had previous training in photo- graphy. The officers for this term are: Bill Pires, president; Julius Haberman, vice-president; Anna Lowe, secretary; and David Joyce, Treasurer. THE WELFARE FUND In January 1930, during the depression, when there was great need among many High School students, the principal of the school approved of the formation of a Faculty Wel- fare Committee to raise and administer funds for the good of the students. In the years since then, thousands of dollars have been raised and thousands spent for glasses, den- tistry, hot lunches, graduation clothes, and countless other services. There is not one cent wasted in overhead, every penny is accounted for by the treasurer and the school auditor. The fund is now in charge of the following committee, which, with the exception of the treasurer who succeeded Mr. John Connors on his retirement, is composed of the same members as in 1930: Chairman: Miss Marion E. Lord; Secretary: Miss Susan E. Shennan; Treasurer: Mr. David Kroudvird; and Miss Marian F. Lane and Mr. Milfred I. Buker. 93 ATHLETICS The harder matched, the greater victory. —Shakespeare FOOTBALL 1942 The Crimson eleven has not had a very impressive record this year. Their perform- ance on the field has been better than their record shows. Mt. Plea sant, a mediocre team, rose to its heights to overrun the Crimson representatives. Revere was by far the only team that actually deserved its win over the Whaling City boys. Due to scholastic standings and injuries there was a different starting line-up for each and every game. Brockton and East Pawtucket were games that were lost by bad breaks. In the Fairhaven game we rolled up an impressive figure of yards lost on penalties. The Voke game was a battle between the teams and the high wind that prevailed that day. The Thanksgiving day battle with Durfee gave the fans its best show of the year. The Crimson did swell in holding Durfee to a tie. Even with all its bad breaks two Whaling City boys made the All Bristol County First Team, and three other Dodgemen made the “All’’ second team. With only one defeat on its schedule suffered at the hands of a strong Attleboro High School five at Attleboro, we were assured of an invitation to the M. I. T. Tournament held in Cousins Gym at Tufts College. To keep in form until the M. I. T. Tournament Coach Dodge arranged two post-season games against classy competition. The Crimson five reached the semi-finals. Rindge Tech, the team that went through to win the tournament overcame our half-time lead to drop our team out of the running. The team brought in 86 runs against their opponents’ 39. Two of the losses were suffered at the hands of a traditional rival, Brockton. The city rivalry between Voke and the Dodgemen ended in a split. Holy Family, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, and Durfee were defeated in two encounters each with the New Bedford team. Out of three meets, they lost only one. To add to their glory for the past year, the Whalers took third place in both the Indoor and Outdoor State Meets. The Crimson had a representative who brought home the laurel for State High Jumping Champ- ionship. Mr. Kelly, the new physical director for boys, is coach of the team. For us it means a shortage of Our tires and gasoline. But some must bear a greater loss Than tires or luxury; They miss a son or brother gone From their own family. To win the war, that is the task That faces us today; To work together, each and all, This is the only way. The men in service are a part Of this great unity; They're working hard to bring about Our “V for Victory.” War bonds and stamps, our tools to buy; “We can, we will, we must;” Another tool to use is this: “In God we place our trust.” —Ann Wilde. 586 3 9066 00057 0 e é SS . 2 . —— : = 2 OS N =z—| © | 7 5(o=wo x P=—— © | —— =——n =o -9QS=oO co o=o!} SwS——o : 3 E— ¥ : Sea S fu cs S Dia aia oa a Se Ree es SOS : Scere SS Sipe Rey 5 : WIZE 4 ‘. HONOR SOCIETY To those unsung athletes of higher knowledge in our school, is dedicated the Honor So- ciety, the most exclusive of all our clubs. The requirements which must be met to be eligible for the Honor Society are; a three must attain an average of 90% for the freshman term; a five, an average of 88% for fresh- man and sophomore work combined; and a seven, an average of 85% for three years of studies. One of the greatest aids to all students of the school provided by the society, is the Student Clinic; organized to help those who are doing poorly in their studies. JUNIOR MINUTE MEN The organization, which has done the most to spread the good name of New Bedford High School is, beyond a doubt, the Junior Minute Men. Since its foundation in February, 1942, the Junior Minute Men, under the capable supervision of Mr. William E. King, has in- creased from its original membership of 54 to an enrollment of 130 active members. In each home room, there is at least one representative of the Junior Minute Men. In most rooms, there are a number of representatives. The Junior Minute Men have, in a little more than a year, sold over seventy-five thous- ands dollars worth of stamps and bonds, or more than enough to buy a torpedo boat or a pursuit plane. This record of sales more than speaks for itself. But the Junior Minute Men have not confined their activities solely to the promotion of stamp and bond sales in the high school. They have cooperated in every way possible with the Senior Minute Men of Greater New Bedford. On Friday, February 5, the Junior Minute Men culminated a year of most successful activities by winning the Minute Man flag and banner for the school. This Minute Man flag is awarded by the United States Treasury Department, only to those schools which have ninety per cent of the student body buying at least one stamp every month. Ever since the flag was presented to the New Bedford High School, the Junior Minute Men have, by their efforts, kept it flying, and they have pledged themselves to the task of keeping the Minute Man flag flying for the duration of the war. 49 ELE ae Hee First row—Lois Pollard, Lucy Spencer, Josephine Ashley, Helen Lazowski. Evidence of this is shown by choice of their committees, such as the Sol-E-Mar, Welfare, Social, Library, Hos- pitality, City Mission, Health, Civic, and Membership. The Senior League is for girls who are Juniors and Seniors. The Sea Division, is chiefly for the Sea Scouts. This Division offers a course in the elements of navigation. The Air Service Division is limited to those boys taking the class in pre-flight, and to members of the Air Scouts. Those students who are taking the special war-time courses at the New Bedford Textile School, are placed in the Production Ser- vice Division. Members of the Junior Minute Men and the Junior Red Cross compose the community service division. As part of its war-time program, the Victory Corps, in cooperation with the R. O. T. C., organized a course in military drill for Junior and Senior girls, with a program of physical fitness. To raise funds to defray the expenses of organization, the Victory Corps presented a most successful concert by the New Bedford Symphonic Orchestra, with Artiss de Volt and Sheila Young as guests artists, on Sunday, April 4, in the High School auditorium. By combining all war-time activities in the school, the Victory Corps is rapidly be- coming the most important and the most active service organization which the New Bed- ford High School has ever seen. PRE-FLIGHT With many of our class mates joining the Air Corps, the pre-flight training course has become one of the most vital classes in our school. The purpose of the course, is to teach the fundamental principals of flying. The students make model airplanes, learn to recognize the different types, and other features of our modern planes. Piloting by theory, celestial navigation, radio, weather forecasting, and code use, comprise the studies of this course. Physics and the higher forms of mathematics are of great importance as a background to the student entering this course. One year in this special training, is equivalent to two months of actual air training. Boys who have already taken this course, and are entering the Air Corps, find it to be of great help. Miss Nesbitt is the instructor. 63 DEBATING SOCIETY The Alpha Debating Society is becoming one of the most popular organizations in the school. Its purpose is to give its members a thorough training in public speaking and debating. It supplies material for the Varsity Debating Team which is under the direction of Mr. Ringdahl. Discussions, readings, open forums, and debates on current happenings, are carried on at its meetings. The society is presided over by Pearl Montrond, and is instructed by Miss Szydlowski. 64 Typing Class Chemistry Laboratory Commercial Office Study Hall Office Practice Class Counselors’ Office 1 F257 OF ALL — REMEMBER E a TO STAY QUTSIDE THE BATTER’S BOX SO YOU WON'T GET HIT WITH THE BALL £ AND SWING, FOR IT’S THE PITCHER’S JOB TO HIT YOUR BAT WITH THE BALL JV a zn ' Seal Siew THE BALL RUN TO 3-d BASE. ) a yy THE FIELDER WILL 6 THROW TO FIRST, arte in Q “Cres on Baremnc | 1 FOR YOU ARE 4 (35 43 | First row—Charles Sykes, George Baileys, Norman Gamache, Luther Madison, Raymond Piche, El- mer Rodriques, Irving Ross. FOOTBALL The outcome of the 1942 New Bedford High School football season, was not very bright. Since there was only one veteran from the 1941 eleven, it was necessary to build up prac- tically, a new team. When the end of the season had rolled around, New Bedford had won three games, lost four, and tied one. The Crimson eleven started the season with a bang, defeating Cranston, a strong foe, by a score of twenty to seven. Most of the teams that the Crimson com peted with, were very strong, and our team, not the same as those of past years, could not put up the opposition that was necessary. Players who were outstanding for the Crimson this year were, Captain Charles Mc- Kenna, Phil Ashworth, Charles Sykes, Henry Trahan, George Bailey, and Luther Madison. FOOTBALL 1942 NBO N.B. BASKETBALL The New Bedford High School 1942-43 basketball season turned out to be very suc- cessful after the team’s early setbacks. This year’s team finished its schedule with a record of eleven victories and five defeats. Our team also participated in the annual M. I. T. Tournament, where the boys exhibited a great display of basketball, before losing at the hands of Newton, in an overtime period, by a score of thirty-four to thirty-two. This game is quoted as being one of the best performances ever witnessed at any M. I. T. Tournament. Outstanding among the boys who comprised the aggregation, was Captain Bob Ramos. The forward berths were taken up by Armand Amaral and Mickey Pina, who did more than their share of point-getting. We cannot forget Joe Mendes and Ray Hague, the other two boys who were with the starting lineups. Gene Sullivan, Al Griffith, Mickey Sullivan, Harold Cooper, Wallace Oullette, Antone Pina, Paul Handler, Luiz Rebello, and Red Holmstrom, the boys who comprised the reserves, are also worthy of much deserved praise. 70 2 ee Warten rst ) New Bedford versus Vocational BASKETBALL 1942-43 N.B. BASEBALL In spite of the changes that the war emergency has forced upon the sporting world, New Bedford High's baseball team still has its hat in the ring. The Crimson has been very fortunate this year to have many veterans back from the previous season. In view of this fact, a brilliant showing is expected of this group. Some of the veterans this year are: Lou Rebello, Mickey Sullivan, James Downey, James Ryan, Gene Sullivan, Harold Cooper, and Antone Pina. 1943 BASEBALL SCHEDULE Durfee (three times) Dartmouth (twice) Vocational (three times) Fairhaven (twice) Westport (twice) Taunton (twice) 72 First row—A. As a result of many schools dropping certain athletics for the duration, the Crimson track team has not had many meets. The teams that the Crimson has competed against, were mostly independent teams from the city. We are proud of the fact, that our school has carried on with athletics, but we are even prouder of the fact that in our track team you learn more than just how to run. Whether or not you win, if you play fairly and do your best, you are tops. 73 Cafeteria Gym Class Recess Library Rifle Team Stamp Sale LAND HO! Toa Class History vile | Np. NY fh Ul Nee iy Mh, MA y Mh Graduation at last! and as I stare fondly down at the diploma in my hand, my mind is crowded with the events of the past four years that have led toward this climax. Through a distant haze I can see that early September morn in 1939, when our Class of June 1943, first gathered together in our auditorium. It was all so strange and new, and all around we could find nothing but a sea of strange faces. We spent our first day passing through a whirlwind of crowded, noisy corridors, that were filled with for- bidding traffic officers. At the end of our first class a bell pierced through the room, and everyone bounded from their seats to discover what the next class had in store for them. With only three minutes to go, we rushed hurriedly through those jammed corridors. So it went all through the day. Finally, worn and weary, but happy, we found that we had survived through that wonderful ‘First Day.” It took us only a few days to settle down to the regular routine of preparing homework, remembering one way stairs, and study hall seats. Our biggest thrill came the first time we heard Mr. Murdy’s voice come through the Sound System; but soon even that became commonplace. However, the one thing we did not become accustomed to, was the Seventh Period. It was not long before we became well acquainted with our new friends, and we elected Polly Ann Trafford as President; Marybeth McDonnell, Vice President; Dorothy Cobb, Secre- tary; and Stratis Kosta, Treasurer. Jean Parsons, Arnold Boomer, and William Humphreys, represented us in the Student Council. By the time June rolled around, we were all pretty tired of exams, and we stole long- ing glances toward the windows. Finally after passing in our newly-made programs, we left behind the echoing halls and went ahead into those happy vacation days. As all good things must come to an end we returned to the “Halls of Learning” in September 1940. It was similar to that day of a year previous, but it was no longer strange 76 and new, but a good friend. This day, however, we were not fooled by the “dummy ele- vator’. We met many new faces in our classes, and upon further investigation we learned, that they had come from nearby Junior High Schools. This time we elected Arnold Boomer, President; Josephine Ashley, Vice President; Anna Lowe, Secretary; and Pauline Harpin, Treasurer. To the Student Council we elected Polly Ann Trafford, Julius Haberman, Stasia Zolkos, and Ruth Dvorak. At a special audi- torium period Burton Bellow, Albert Carr, Grace Farren, Avis Goldstein, Sheldon Horvitz, Avis Ofstrock, Stanley Siegal, and Polly Ann Trafford, were given scholastic recognition for their work, and were elected into the Honor Society. From then on various members joined the Dramatic Club, took part in sports, photography and similar organizations. A few were made members of the Girls’ League and Hi-Y. The weeks flew quickly, and it was without reluctance that we left in June to enjoy unscholarly activities. In September 1941, we returned again with sad faces and happy memories. The mist is clearing now and I can look back without difficulty on our Junior Year. By this time we considered ourselves superior to other classes, and: our little groups could be seen gathering in corridors and on the front stairs discussing the work of our new class officers who were Stasia Zolkos, President; Ethel Kenworthy, Vice President; Gladys Staskiewicz, Secretary; and Patricia Dufficy, Treasurer. Our Student Council was made up of Polly Ann Trafford, Avis Goldstein, Patricia Wood, and Beryl Mellor. This long list was added to the membership of the Honor Society: Eleanor Blaszczak, Edith Boardman, Loretta Car- on, Doris Costello, Jean De Rocco, Ruth Dvorak, Mary Eleuterio, Isabel Hartwell, Edwin Kacprzyk, Helen Koniczenski, Helen Lazowski, Conrad LeBlanc, Helen Levow, Anna Lowe, Marybeth McDonnell, Eleanor McGinty, and Priscilla Medeiros. With difficulty we passed through those hot June days, and spent an enjoyable summer on beaches, and camping under starlit summer skies. Finally in September 1942 when we returned, we realized that we were now upper classman, and must set an example on the lowly Freshman. As class elections came nearer, vigorous campaigns were held, and those who came out with flying colors were Robert McCormick, President; William Humphreys, Vice President; Stasia Zolkos, Secretary; and Helen Koniczenski, Treasurer. Polly Ann Trafford, Robert Kasmire, Josephine Ashley, Marybeth McDonnell, John Ruggles, Lois Pollard, represented us in Student Council. Those elected to the Honor Society were Josephine Ashley, Pauline Benjamin, Arnold Boomer, Marilyn Davis, Julius Haberman, William Humphreys, Janice Kaharl, Robert Kasmire, Charles Keyes, Juliet Kougias, Dora Laliberte, Florence Rogers, Edmund Rogue, John Rug- gles, Charles Soforenko, Dorothy Swallow, James Tourtellot, Leonora Vaz, Walter Verry, Leo Walder, and Stasia Zolkos. School activities were now headed by our classmates. Most of our social affairs were forgotten now in an effort to aid in the War Effort. We took an active part in making in our school, the first nationally organized group of Junior Minute Men, girls took part in Red Cross classes, and the Victory Corps was established. tit f The mist has risen now and the time is the Present. We held our 8's Get-together which started the gala social events. Tonight we completed a colorful four years, that are to be marked forever on our high school calendar. Not all of us took part in our graduation exercises, for some had left to join the ranks of Uncle Sam's fighting forces, to protect our democracy so that those to come in the future may also look back on their high school days with shining eyes.
