Election to this society is one of the highest honors which can be bestowed upon a student. In order to be considered eligible for this society a ‘3 must obtain an average of 90° for the freshman year; a 5 must have an 88% average for the freshman and sopho- more years combined; and a 7 must have an average of 85% for three years. Miss Susan Shennan, Educational Counselor, has been faculty adviser for this group since its organization in 1927. Officers this term are David Saltus, president; Ralph Geffen, vice-president; Lillian Le- vine, secretary; and Cecelia Lewis, treasurer. 42 F i i.” ° bec First row, left to right—Gertrude Davis, Barbara Andrews, Sybil Minkin, William Atchison Second row—Polly Ann Trafford, Avis Goldstein, Eddie Harrington, Dorothy Camara, Rita Brous- seau, Lucy Palmiera, Bernard Silverstein Third row—Paul Chervinsky, Leila Winograd, C!aire Wollison, Leopoldina Pacheco, Beryl Mellor, Stasia Zolkos, Irene Sheehan, Connie Hindle Fourth row—Bernard Herman, Richard Carlson, Max Klein, Lawrence Bertman, David Saltus, Eugene Penler Fifth row—Donald Wall, David Narva, Noah Minkin, Kenneth Atchison, Paul Lipson, Mark At- chison Sixth row—Hugh Allison, Philip Gregory STUDENT COUNCIL In our own school the principles of democracy are practiced daily by its pupils, and are effectively demonstrated by its Student Council. This council is really the governing body of the school, and very often has made valuable suggestions as to improvements for the school. The membership is composed of six representatives from the members of the 7’s and 8's; four from the 3's and 4's; and three from the l’s and 2’s. Others in the council are the Presidents of each class, Chief of the Traffic Squad, and the Chief Justice of the Student Court. The officers this term are Barbara Andrews, president; Mark Atchison, vice-president; Sybil Minkin, secretary; and Gertrude Davis, treasurer. Miss Marion E. Lord and Mr. William E. King are the faculty advisers. 43 First row, left to right—Edith Carr, David Saltus, Mary-Jayne Anthony Second row—David Narva, Leforne Sequeira Third row—-Willis Tripp, Robert Cooke, Jane Mikus, Albert DeLoid STUDENT COURT The Student Court aids the Traffic Squad in enforcing the rules of the school, which are made by the Student Council and the principal. Each Friday, students who receive traffic tickets from members of the Traffic Squad, appear before the court where, usually, seventh periods or detention room periods are given as a penalty. This term probation sentences are given for first or minor offenses. The Court consists of a chief justice, six associate justices, two defense attorneys, one prosecuting attorney, a clerk of the court, secretary, and probation officer, all of whom are appointed by the principal. David Saltus is the chief justice. 41 First row, left to right—Quentin Youngblood, Bancroft Ellis, Philip Gregory, Mr. Beach, adviser, Myrle Sykes, Marjorie Kelley Second row—George Chirigotis, John Brightman, Hampton Duxbury, Helen Johnson, Lucien La- ferriere Third row—Edward Parks, Thelma Pedroza, Gertrude Parks, Joseph Almeida Fourth row—Fernand Alves, Gladys Doyle, Arlene Gregory, Patricia Farrell, Barbara Taber, Mary Murphy TRAFFIC SQUAD The object of the Traffic Squad is to aid the faculty members in maintaining order throughout the school. Tickets are issued to all students who do not obey the school’s regulations. All stud- ents receiving tickets must appear before the Student Court where they have the service of a defense council. The justices meet out the punishment or refer the case to the principal. The Squad is composed of 2 assistant chiefs, 20 deputy chiefs, and two hundred mar- shals, governed by Philip Gregory, the chief this term. Mr. George Beach and Miss Marion Lord are faculty advisers of this group. 45 First row, left to right—Eleanor Riley, Margo Corson, Marion Dyer, Edna Mullins Second row—Jean Pollard, Selma Levine, Elizabeth Ledvina, Mildred Waring, Louise Bullard, Dorothy Dillies, Elsie MacLeod, Eleanor Coggeshall, Connie Jason, Myrle Sykes, Agnes Hogan Third row—Frances Lawrence, Marjorie Kelley, Helen Johnson, Genevieve Guillet, Ruth Ezyk, Audrey Knowles Fourth row—Cecelia Lewis, Lucille Hayward, Betty Peters, Phyllis Schmidt, Barbara Taylor, Gladys Doyle, Stella Giusti, Helen Tighe, Jean Lawless Fifth row—Ruth Medro, Marilyn Davis, Phyllis Waring, Alma Nelson, Lucy Spencer, Irma Shuster, Mary Higginson Sixth row—Doris Bougie, Gloria Allen, Catherine Cummings, Eileen Bardsley, Nancy Smith, Gen- evieve Foley, Helene Oliver, Frances Richards Seventh row—Barbara Rusitzky, Dorothy Horton, Ruth Catterall, Claire McKay, Doris Ashley, Kay Chadwick, Dorothy Wilcox SENIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE The Senior Girls’ League has for its purpose to encourage its members in usefulness in living, joyousness of giving, readiness in service, and naturalness of being. Probably the outstanding service rendered by the Senior Girls’ League is the filling of Christmas baskets for needy families of High School students. Throughout the year mem- bers work at the Red Cross and City Mission, giving parties for the less fortunate and sponsoring affairs for the benefit of others. In order to join the Girls’ League, prospective members fill out applications which are presented to the Executive Board whenever a vacancy exists. Only girls who receive a unanimous vote are accepted. This term Eleanor Riley is president; Margo Corson, vice-president; Marion Dyer, sec- retary; and Edna Mullins, treasurer. Miss Marion Lord is the faculty adviser. 46 ‘a ae ee ae ae i. ae Kee First row, left to right—Ed Parks, secretary; Paul Walsh, president; Mr. Felton, adviser; Ken Knowles, vice-president Second row—Bob Mogilnicki, Dona Couet, Chas. Ashley, Americo Roderiques, George McCarthy SENIOR HI-Y The Senior Hi-Y attempts to create and maintain high standards of Christian character throughout the school and community. In a strict sense the club belongs to the school only because its members are boys of the senior and junior classes. The club was organized in 1922 by Richard Dunwoodie, director of counseling and guid- ance at the Y. M. C. A. The club this year is missing deeply the presence of William E. The tie with Brockton was the first time since 1919 that the Shoe City team has not emerged victorious, so that alone is an accomplishment. Our natural and greatest rivals, Voke, Durfee, and Fairhaven were de- feated by scores of 20-0, 26-0, and 20-6 respectively. The line was sensational, both offensively and defensively because of the fine work of Nelson Jourdain, the outstanding lineman in this section; Tony Dias, another great per- former; Jim Caulfield, a stonewall; Jim Bargasse, a boy who did a commendable job all season and Denny Brault, a tireless performer at the pivot post. Stan Grabiec was an excellent kicker and pass receiver, and Art Davidian was great defensively and offensively. Their replacements, Joe Mendes, Muddy Gentile, Henry Trahan, Fred Sylvia, Fred Wolanski, and Dominic Sciscento were all capable reserves. In the backfield the fiery Paul Walsh was the leading scorer; Kenny Knowles was an excellent passer and a great climax runner, and his dropkick conversions were really good; Charlie McKenna did a little running, but his blocking was the feature of many contests; and big Gus Bowen was a dependable line plunger, and completed a formidable array of kackfield talent together with reserve back Johnny Sylvia. The Bristol County batting champion was a Crimsonite, Henry Trahan, with a .340 mark, while the aforementioned Robillard came close with a neat .339. Other Crimson stars in the select .300 class were Stan Grabiec, Carl Smith, and Dante Balestracci. They were the only team to defeat Durfee during the regular season schedule. Jessie B. Rittenhouse RY « wh HE A DIN GH @® ME GEASS eas lOh We entered the doors of the New Bedford High School for the first time on a frosty morning in January 1938, thrilled with the thoughts of the many great adventures awaiting us. We were curious as to what our classes, class- mates, and teachers would be like, and what the future held in store. Think- ing of this I took a look into my crystal ball to see what lay ahead. The mists swirled, then cleared, to reveal with crystal-like clearness the eventful happenings of our first year. Passing in rapid succession the scenes showed the class electing as its officers, David, Narva, president; Marilyn Portnoy, vice-president; William Parsons, secretary; and Stella Giusti, treasurer. Our class adviser was Miss Morrison. Those who joined the Student Council were: Edna Mullins, Charlotte Greenberg, and Stephen Mathewson. Headed for the Honor Society were: Madeline Dyer, Ralph Geffen, Virginia Gifford, Shirley Mendelsohn, David Narva, Jean Pollard, Marilyn Portnoy, and Rhoda Wordell. I also saw the class gathered together in the gym for the first time at the Freshman Supper and Dance which was given in our honor by the Girl's Welfare League. A second glance showed that our first eventful year had come to a close and we were headed for our second year determined to make it as successful as we could. Our class adviser for our second year was Miss Morrison. For class officers we had the following students: president, Edward Filipek; vice-presi- dent, Edna Mullins; secretary, Marjorie Kelley; and treasurer, Edna Silva. Elected to the Honor Society were: Jean Almond, Gerald Boucher, Doris Bougie, Mildred Conway, Edna Coutu, Rebecca Epstein, Mildred Hacking, Isabelle Mikus, George Monteiro, Margaret Protz, Paul Robbins, Sophie Ruscik, Mona Salisbury, David Saltus, Miriam Shief, Edna Silva, Hilda Simas, Sophie Starsiak, and Myrle Sykes. We were represented in the Student Council by Edward Filipek, Stephen Mathewson, Paul Robbins, William Par- sons, and David Narva. Our music-minded pupils who joined the band and orchestra were: Bernard Herman, Selma Levine, Eric Marvell, Earl Bowen, Phyllis Schmidt, Hilda Simas, Madeline Dyer, Edna Mullins, Barbara Taylor, Eleanor Riley, Elsie MacLeod, and Natalie Park. Before realizing it the second school year was at an end. 70 Once again glancing into my crystal, I saw that our officers for the third year were: president, Ralph Geffen; vice-president, Elaine Millette; secretary, Doris Shone; and treasurer, Stella Giusti. This year those taken into the Honor Society were: Dorothy Delage, Irene Gerstein, Pearl Gersten- zang, Lucille Hayward, Robert Hirst, Selma Israel, Elizabeth Ledvina, Selma Levine, Vivian Marks, Eric Marvell, Elaine Millette, Sybil Minkin, Elsie Pires, Juliet Poirier, and Rita Slater. Those who joined the Student Council were: Ralph Geffen, Sybil Minkin, Lawrence Bertman and Bernard Herman. Many of our students became great athletic stars. They were Gus Bowen, Anthony Dias, Norman Camara, Kenneth Knowles, Rene Boutin, Quentin Youngblood, George Monteiro, and Edward Filipek. Our girl students interested in sports and who became cheerleaders were Elsie MacLeod and Barbara Taylor. Through the swirling mists I saw the events of our fourth year pass quickly before my eyes. This year the students elected to carry on the work of the graduating class were: president, Eugene Penler; vice-president, Juliet Poirier; secretary, Marjorie Kelley; and treasurer, Hilda Simas. Mr. Tripp was given the task of guiding us through our last year. The four high honor students were: Commercial, Rhoda Wordell and George Monteiro; College, David Narva and Shirley Mendelsohn. Those interested in law who entered the Student Council were: Eugene Penler, Bernard Herman, Charlotte Greenberg, David Narva, Lawrence Bertman, Sybil Minkin, and Milton Rosen. Distinguished officers of the R. O. T. C. were: Honorary Majors George McCarthy and Phillip Gregory, Honorary Captain Gordon Rice, and Second Lieutenants Dominic Sciscento, Antone Costa, Louis Medeiros, Robert Hirst and Paul Robbins. During this year we held our first social event as seniors. It was the 7’s Spring Parade and was acclaimed a great success by all who attended. On the 15th of October we had our regular 8's Get-together in the girl's gym and had such a good time that later on, on November 24th, we held a roller-skating party at Acushnet Park. Before we knew it, our fourth year was rapidly drawing to a close. As proof of this we received our class rings and finally after much hard work on the part of the classbook committee, our classbooks were passed out among us. Our senior prom was held on January 16th in the boy’s gym. On January 19th the banquet was held at the New Bedford Hotel. Seated at the head table were the class officers, our principal, Mr. Dorman, Mr. Tripp, Mr. Murdy, and Miss Lord. The big event — graduation — was now at hand. The Hon- orable Matthew A. Glynn, Mayor of New Bedford, presented our diplomas from the stage of the high school on January 22. The mists closed in once again, the scenes faded, and all these things came to pass. We have strived to fashion The Crimson Log of June, 1942, into a true picture of our friends and activ- ities, a lasting memory of our high school life. - Se wi ‘, “a — all Fie i = We, the Class of June, 1942, dedicate this cl ass- book to one who has always been our friend, one who has always worked untiringly in our behalf, one who has taken our problems upon his shoulders — Stephen V. In Poland now the people live like slaves, Grim, living monuments to Hitler’s greed, While in their hearts the flag of freedom waves, The dim and dying hope of being freed. We here now in America are filled With admiration for our liberty, The price of which was paid in blood that spilled, When from the tyrants we battled free. And now that danger lurks on land and sea, We pledge our faith to keep our nation free. Doris Ashley. HIGH SCHOOL REFERENCE LIBRARY New Redford. Mass. “oe The members of the June, 1942, graduating class are going out of school to start their life work in the midst of the most confused economic and political conditions the world has ever known. The educational training received, based on pre-war standards, must be adapted to present war conditions. Each individual must seek that type of effort that he feels will enable him to make his greatest contribution to the winning of this war. Some may join the actual combat forces; others may enter the agencies that are producing the materials which are essential for the supplying of these forces; still others may continue their education in schools and colleges in order that they may later fill other essential positions of service. One thing should be firmly fixed in the mind of every graduate; that this war is not just the affair of the other fellow. Its loss would mean the loss of everything that every American holds dear: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — those things for the establishment of which our forefathers fought and died. Every American is vitally concerned; every graduate must realize this and every graduate must, until this war is won, devote every particle of energy, physical and mental, to the one great end of saving our democratic form of government for his own and for future generations. We spent the first few weeks of our journey getting our sea legs, struggling with the intricacies of algebra, one-way stairs, and memorizing our study hall seats. As typically brazen freshmen we soon became familiar with that well known institution, the seventh period. After learning the ropes we elected our first class officers. Marian Dreisbach was chosen President; Vivian Huard, Vice- president; Jean Blossom, Secretary; and George Albert, Treas- urer. To represent us in the Student Council we chose Connie Jason, Barbara Andrews and Calvin Siegal. After forty weeks of steady sailing through calm and storm we put into port for repairs while our crew enjoyed a ten week summer vacation. In September, 1939, we boarded ship for the second lap of our journey, considering ourselves experienced seamen. Having learned as freshmen that there was no school elevator, that Seniors were not creatures to be feared, and that it is possible after much practice to find one’s way around the school build- ing, we spent our first days on board renewing old acquaint- ances and meeting the crew members who had joined us from other ships. Our first important duty as Sophomores was to elect new class officers. This time we chose Donald Morris, President; Leroy Faltus, Vice-president; Bernice Sullivan, Secretary, and Elizabeth Harrington, Treasurer. Our representatives in the Student Council were John Doyle, Theresa Medeiros, Edith Bawley, and Mary Cairns. Our outstanding scholars who were admitted to the Honor Society were Lillian Levine, Claire 51 Wollison, Calvin Siegal, Phyllis Rosenberg, Charles Allen, Lil- lian Bourbeau, Helen Golda, Alice Holmes, Muriel Johnson, Gen- owefa Koczera, and Cecelia Lewis. Some of our members showed dramatic ability and were elected to the Dramatic Club. Others took up sports, debating, photography, and var- ious other school activities. In June we discovered a lovely little island called “Sum- mer Vacation” where we stayed for ten thoroughly enjoyable and carefree weeks. Reluctantly we returned to ship in September, 1940, to begin our Junior year. Our reluctance soon turned to enthusiasm, however, as school sports, clubs, and social activities gained our attention. We were now well acquainted with our teach- ers and shipmates, and we were beginning to feel distinctly superior to all other classes. However, liberal doses of physics, shorthand, and Latin promptly dispelled this feeling and made most of us slightly sea-sick. Officers on this part of our cruise were Stanley Grabiec, President; Antoinette Bourque, Vice-president; Bernice Sullivan, Secretary; and Doris Poisson, Treasurer. We chose Barbara Andrews, Pauline Soltys, Leopoldina Pacheco, and Eugenia Tavares to represent us in the Student Council. Scholastic honors were gained by Mary-Jayne Anthony, Lucille Bissaillon, Harold Bociek, Antoinette Bourque, Ruth Catterall, Alfred Couto, Albert DeLoid, John Doyle, Rita Dufresne, Lily Durant, Marion Dyer, Charles Gennert, Genevieve Guillet, Irene Kon, Ruth Medro, Walter Mierzejewski, Donald Morris, Leopoldina Pache- co, Thelma Pedroza, Cecelia Peltz, Rodolphe Primeau, Hazel Ramos, La-Salette Rego, Hectorette Richard, Charles Roderick, Alice Santos, Eugenia Tavares, and Anita Zeman, who were admitted to the Honor Society. Several of our shipmates who were interested in serving their school and community were accepted as members in the Girl's League and Hi-Y. Other members of the crew took part in the activities of the Dramatic Club, the Science and Photo- graphy Clubs, and similar organizations. Many of the mem- bers of the R. O. T. C. proved themselves capable officers, and several boys distinguished themselves in the field of athletics. At the end of this trip, Irene Kon and Calvin Siegal were award- ed the College Club and Harvard Club Books respectively be- cause of their outstanding seamanship. The weeks flew quickly by and it was soon time to go ashore for another ten weeks’ vacation. We spent the summer in 52 various unscholarly activities and returned aboard in Septem- ber with a very great prejudice against that thing called ‘‘work.” We soon buckled down seriously, however, to the task of finishing the last and most exciting portion of our cruise. At last we were Seniors — those lofty creatures who had once looked so disdainfully upon us when we were freshmen. As class election time grew near, a vigorous campaign was waged by all the candidates. Emerging victorious were Margo Corson, President; Edward Parks, Vice-president; Genevieve Guillet, Secretary; and Cecilia Lewis, Treasurer. Those elected to the Student Council were Barbara Andrews, William Atchi- son, Charles Gennert, Ben Lipson, Leopoldina Pacheco, and Claire Wollison. The Honor Society admitted many new mem- bers among whom were Doris Ashley, Emerson Ashley, John Bolton, Mildred Burgess, Elva Cardoza, Edith Carr, Angelina Chagaruly, Marian Dreisbach, Philomena Duarte, Ruth Finch, Olga Frias, Whitney Furtak, Roselyn Gilmore, Audrey Knowles, Ben Lipson, Eleanor McGilvery, Virginio Macedo, Mary Mello, James Ogden, Eunice Parent, Edward Parks, Doris Preston, Josephine Romanski, Dorothy Shwartz, and Dorothy Weissent. The school activities now became mostly led by our class mem- bers as we energetically took offices in all the organizations and teams. The Girls’ League, Hi-Y, Debating Team, Athletic Teams, R. O. T. C., Band, and the other aggregations found themselves manned by our shipmates. We abounded in im- portant positions. The 8's Get-together, which began a series of gala social affairs, was held in March in the ship's ballroom (i.e., the boy’s gym) where we danced to the music of Teddy Irzyk and his-uh- records. As our journey grew nearer its close we attended the Prom and the Banquet, which was held in the New Bedford Hotel. This wound up the festivities and brought us face-to- face with the reality that our journey was finished, and Grad- uation Day was upon us. We were given a diploma which cer- tified that we were able-bodied seamen, capable of keeping our lives ship-shape and weathering all storms to come. As we walked down the gang plank to a new and lengthier voyage, we trimmed our sails and readied ourselves for the trying times to come. No class had more facing them; and no class was more determined to persevere, to sail on beyond th e storm to clearer, sunnier days. On January 11th the chorus made a trip to Boston and broadcasted from station WRUL to Central and South American countries. Shortly after this they presented “The Fiesta Pan-Americana’’ which was a very successful undertaking. On April 16th this entertainment was put on at the Bridgewater State Teachers’ College. From all known reports this was the first time a college group was entertained by a high school organization. The success of the Chorus is largely due to the inspiring and capable leadership of Mr. Baptiste and the fine cooperative spirit of the girls. 68 oe First row, left to right—Edith Ross, Vice-President; Vivian Gaouette, President; Jerome Lieberman, Treasurer. DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club enables students to develop their dramatic talents by studying plays and producing a major production each spring. Try-outs are held at the beginning of each term for those pupils who are interested in dramatics. Students who successfully demon- strate their abilities are elected to membership in the club. This organization is under the faculty supervision of a committee, Mr. Carl F. W. Berg- strom (chairman), Mr. G. Philippe De Rosier, Miss Louise B. Finnell, Miss Anna L. Dorgan, and Miss Ruth B. McFadden (business manager). The fundamentals of acting are studied with these advisors, and each spring a stage offering is presented. This year’s play will be “What A Life.” The officers of the club are Vivian Gaouette, president; Edith Ross, vice-president; Jose- phine Ashley, secretary; Jerome Leiberman, treasurer. 69 First row, left to right—Capt. He OnelsaG: The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps of New Bedford High, a junior unit, is an organiza- tion that has always brought praise to our school. Its purpose is to give our young men a basic training for other military capacities. All members must be phys ically sound, have an inclination toward military knowledge, and be able leaders. One of the interesting ac- tivities of the group is the prize squad competition in which drill teams vie with one another at the Semi-annual Drill and Ball and at Federal inspection. Federal inspections are held each year by a War Department representative who ex- amines the efforts and training of the corps. Our R. O. T. C. has been an honor unit for the past several years by official designation. Major Lucien H. Taliaferro, U. S. Army retired, is the professor of military science and tactics assisted by Sergeant Harold G. Kendall. We are proud that many of the men in our present armed forces received their preliminary training in this R. O. T. C. unit. 70 First row, left to right—Hector LeBlanc, Antone Perry, James Sykes, Charles Plant, Cynthia Caton, Rita Regis, Claire Wollison, Peggy Webster, Barbara Taylor, Eleanor Riley, Majorie Lord, Eleanor Moore, Helen Golda, Madeline Dyer, Selma Levine, Ruth Woodland, Beverly Smedstead, George Ladino, John Correia, Bernard Herman, Joseph Ponte. Gennert, Philip Cohen, Walber Beaumont, Edwin Livingston, Alvin Tripp. BAND The band is probably one of the oldest organizations in the school. It is composed of about sixty members and is directed by Clarence W. Arey. This group plays at all audi- torium periods, football games, other important school occasions, and also at many Civic affairs. Last Spring the band won the highest rating in the Plymouth Music Festival at which schools from all parts of Massachusetts competed. In all the contests that the New Bedford High School Band has entered, it has always received very high ratings. Our high school may well be proud of this aggregation. The orchestra, another division of our musical department, gives concerts, plays at graduation exercises, and at all dramatic productions. It has been the foundation of a musical career for many of our graduates. 71 First row, left to right—Miriam Lampert, Jane Mikus, Florence Attallah, Willis Tripp, Albert De- Loid, Chief Justice. Second row—Charles E. Gennert, Harold Bociek, Leforne Sequeira, Robert Cook. STUDENT COURT The Student Court is the final judge of disputes between the Traffic Squad and members of the school. The court enforces the rules made by Mr. Dorman and our Student Council. A student who receives a ticket from an officer of the Traffic Squad is compelled to appear in Student Court on the following Friday for a trial. The sentences range from de- tention periods to probation. The court consists of a Chief Justice, his six Associate Justices, a defense attorney, and assistant defense attorney, a prosecuting attorney, a clerk of court, a secretary, and a pro. bation officer. This is an outstanding example of New Bedford High School's government. Albert De Loid is the Chief Justice. 72 First row, left to right—David Meltzer, Treasurer; Irving Miller, President; Edna Sylvia, Secretary Second row—Shirley Lord, Bernice Soares, Pauline Auger, Edith Ross, Irene Kon, Eli Samuels, Gertrude Parks. Third row—Jack Shapiro, Ralph Geffen, Antonio Castro, Donald Pierce, Frank Golen, Calvin Siegal. DEBATING SOCIETY The Alpha Debating Society is one of the oldest of our school organizations. Its pur- pose is to give the members a knowledge of public speaking and debating. It also sup- ports the Varsity Debating Team and trains students for that organization. Open forums, debates, discussions, readings, and numerous other interesting, instruct- ing exercises are carried on in the meetings. Another feature of the club program is the annual Debating Club dance. Meetings are held every Monday. The present officers are Irving Miller, president; Elaine Sylvia, secretary; David Meltzer, treasurer. Miss Ethel M. Perry is the faculty ad- visor. The worth of the Debating society is easily seen in the fact that many of our prom- inent local lawyers were members in their high school days. The Debating Society offers worthwhile, useful knowle dge that is an asset to any person any time. 73 Seated, left to right—Dorothy Simas, Major; Leforne Sequeira, Major. JUNIOR MINUTE MEN The Junior Minute Men is an organization of students cooperating with the Senior Minute Men of this city. They take care of the banking and buying of Defense Stamps and Bonds at the Post Office and all the traffic in the sale and delivery of stamps and bonds in the school. The members take out pledge cards on which they promise to work with the United States Treasury, receive pins, identification cards, and certificates. One day a week is given over to the sale of stamps and bonds. From February 4 to March 24, this group sold 9897 stamps, totaling $9,236.30. The Junior Minute Men, with the cooperation of their classmates, are doing a wonderful piece of work, and the school is justly proud of this organization aiding our national defense. This aggregation, is the first of its kind in the country and was founded by our Junior Hi-Y. William E. King is the Faculty Advisor aided by John F. Gracia. 74 First row, left to right—Leforne Sequeira, Hazel Ramos, Miriam Lampert, Ralph Geffen, Stanley Siegal, Ruth Medro, Cecelia Lewis, Anita Zeman, Hugh Allison, Ruth Catterall. Third row—Irene Burgess, Helen Golda, Albert DeLoid, Mark Atchison, Burton Bellow, Edward Parks, Marion Dyer, Doris Ashley. “CRIMSON COURIER” The “Crimson Courier’ is one of our newer and certainly one of our most popular insti- tutions. It is the monthly school publication of student interests and activities. The Honor Society sponsors the paper and founded it in the Fall of 1941. Since then it has improved and expanded until now the ‘Courier’ can boast a circulation that approximates seventy- five per cent or more of the student body. Club news, music notes, cartoons, college news, feature articles, vox-pops, editorials, gossip, R. O. T. C. notes, letters to the editor and dozens more interesting or humorous columns are present in every editorial. As each copy of the paper is issued, increasing numbers of readers enjoy its excellent material. There is a Board of Directors of the Courier’ elected by the Honor Society, which super- vises the publication. Ralph Geffen is Editor-in-Chief, assisted by Assistant Editors Miriam Lampert and Stanley Siegel. In addition there is a staff of about twenty five others who do invaluable work. Miss Susan E. Shennan is the faculty advisor of the “Crimson Courier”, a school news- paper of which we have cause to be proud. 75 FRENCH CLUB The French Club is an organization for those who are interested in France, the country, and its language. The club members speak only French at their club meetings, held on every other Thursday. Miss Blanche Fregeau is the faculty advisor. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Since the hobby of taking pictures became popular, our Photography Club has been popular. The members have their own school dark room and equipment. At meetings camera problems and techniques are discussed. Mr. Harold Willey is the faculty advisor. RIFLE TEAM The Rifle Team is an activity of our R. O. T. C. The boys practice shooting and from the best marksmen the team is chosen. It competes in national con tests, and evidence of our Rifle Team's success are the numerous trophies throughout the school that were won by the “eagle-eyes”. MIMEOGRAPH CLUB Among the lesser known of our school activities is the Mimeograph Club. The members learn how to operate these machines and aid many school functions by their work. They are provided with a mimeograph machine in the school with which to work. This activity goes on in Miss Marion E. Peterson's room. DEBATING TEAM The Debating Team is a representative of our school in inter-school oratorical con- tests. The members learn the very valuable art of public speaking. Mr. Fred erick W. Ringdahl is the coach of the team, this year’s Southeastern Mass. Champions. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross organization is another of New Bedford High School's contribu- tions to the national war effort. Our chapter aids the Red Cross unit of this city and gives the students a chance to do their part for our country. Contributions have been made to the canteen division and service has been given to the U. S. O. and to soldiers at Ft. Rodman. Miss Marion E. Lord is the advisor of this notable service group. GOLF TEAM Because of war conditions which make travelin g difficult, our golf team is not as active as usual this year. In 1941 New Bedford High had a championship squad and it is our hope that in the future this fine sport will again come into the fore. Mr. Sumner E. Marvell is the coach of the golf team when it is in action. CHORAL SPEAKING GROUP The Choral Speaking Club or Verse Speaking Choir meets each Monday during the seventh period to chant poetry in unison. The purpose of the club is to develop more interest in poetry and also to improve enunciation and articulation. Many girls who are self-conscious in the classroom have gained poise and confidence through working with this group. Miss Katherine E. Burke is the faculty advisor. TRAFFIC SQUAD The Traffic Squad is composed of a group of students organized to help maintain school rules and order throughout the school. They are the police of New Bedford High School. These ‘police’ issue tickets to all students who disobey any school rules. The student who is given a traffic ticket is compelled to appear at the next Student Court session. Faculty advisors are Mr. George Beach and Miss Marion E. Lord. 76 Principal Dorman 4—_Mr. MacDonnell and Mrs. England Secretary Esther H. Luce 5—Miss Gay, nurse 3—Stephen V. FOOTBALL Although our football squad will lose some of its key men because of graduation, we’re sure that Coach Dodge will again produce a surprise team next year. The Seniors, along with a few undergraduates, formed the best Class B sectional football team in Massachu- sets. New Bedford High School's record of eight wins and one tie establishes history in New Bedford schoolboy annals. Besides an undefeated season, the Crimson annexed City, Bristol County, and Class B State Championships. Among the stalwarts of our championship eleven were Kenny Knowles, dependable quarter-back and drop-kicker; Gus Bowen, John Sylvia, and Charlie McKenna, plunging backs; Tony Dias, Jim Caulfield, and Jim Bargasse, outstanding linemen. Of more interest to us of the June, 1942, graduating class was the performance of Den- nis Brault, small but rugged pivot-man of ihe Whalers, who gained a berth on Bristol County’s first team; Nelson Jourdain, one of ihe most effective linemen Coach Dodge has ever had, also placed on Bristol County’s first team and All-State third team; Stanley ‘Starsh” Grabiec was All-Bristol County end and one of the best schoolboy punters; Marianno ‘Muddy” Gentili, another dependable end for Crimsonites, along with Fred Wolanski, Richard Sylvia, and Alvin Schwartz, three husky guards, played excellent games for the Coach Dodge eleven. Every year ithe football team produces a stellar performer. This year the honors go to Paul Walsh, hard-driving halfback, who copped honors on the All-State second team and Bristol County first team. 80 1—Knowles away against Durfee 4—-Touchdown over Fall River 2—Knowles downed by Durfee 5—Walsh scores another 3—Walsh gains through Quincy 6—Walsh tallies against Quincy RECORD OF CLASS B STATE CHAMPIONS N. BASKETBALL Another successful season has rolled by for Coach Dodge’s Crimson quintet. This year's team led southeastern Massachusetts schoolboy aggregations with a record of 17 straight wins and one defeat in regular competition. Our group also participated in its fifth consecutive annual M. I. T. Scholastic Tournament. After tucking Brookline away to gain a semi-final berth, New Bedford was set back by Rindge Tech, two year victor at the Tournament. Outstanding among the boys who made the Crimson team feared throughout the State was Captain Stan Grabiec, four year veteran of our quintet, the greatest court performer ever to be turned out by Coach Win Dodge. During his brilliant athletic career at New Bedford High, he has won noted positions on Bristol County and M. I. T. Teams. Louis “Manty” Gonsalves, a small but very aggressive senior, did more than his share of point-getting this year. Together with “Manty” at the forward position was Ray Foy, a sterling per- former. Sharing honors with these were other fine players such as Mario Alves and Henry Danielli. Several others of this year’s team will return for next season, and it is our hope that again New Bedford will have another smooth, fast-rolling basketball team. 82 Coach Dodge Alumni Rogers Cranston East Providence Brockton Holy Family Vocational Durfee Fairhaven Holy Family N.B. 32 37 25 40 27 27 34 59 43 34 SEASON'S RECORD Opp. 30 28 19 37 12 1] 16 34 24 31 Rogers Durfee Brockton East Providence Attleboro Fairhaven Vocational Attleboro Brookline Rindge Tech N.B. 45 45 33 56 36 76 ae 32 36 30 Opp. 33 34 28 32 29 38 33 37 24 42 First row, left to right—Luiz Rebello, Harold Cooper, Joseph Cova, Alwyn Griffiths, Everett Sykes. BASEBALL TEAM New Bedford High School's batsmen opened their 1942 schedule by defeating Holy Family High and Durfee High. Usually the first two or three games of the season tend to act as a barometer and this year it forecasts a successful Crimson season. Players who are graduating this term are Stanley Grabiec, star performer for three years, Leo Desrosiers, veteran outfielder, and Irving Dennis, fine pitcher and catcher. Maurice Robillard and Louis Gonsalves, two keymen of previous years, are also leaving school this year. Some of the men depended upon to make this year’s team outstanding are Charles McKenna, Mickey Sullivan, Henry Trahan, and Armand Amaral. Donaghy’s trackmen completed their indoor season this term with a win over Mt. Pleasant High of Providence, a tie for third place at the State meet, and a loss to Tabor Academy. A schedule for the outdoor events is being arranged, Fairhaven, Durfee, Dedham, Mt. Pleasant, Quincy, and East Providence being the competing teams. The State Meet and the Belmont Relay Championship are also being slated. Working hard under the guidance of Coach Donaghy have been Seniors Al DeLoid (captain) sprinter, anchor man on the relay team, and excellent broad jumper; Alvin Shwartz, outstanding shot-putter; and Joe Webster, speedy middle distance man, hurdler, and relay team member. Much of the team’s success is due to these five competitors. We are expecting great things in the future from Don Harrington, Al Catelli, Clem Howe, and Sidney Siegal, all underclassmen. The departing class of June, 1942, wishes Coach Donaghy, one of our favorites, new and greater triumphs with his deserving track team. 85 Seated, left to right—George Tatakos, Arthur Anderson, Gerald Piche, William Humphrey, William Sullivan, Caleb Hayward. Standing—William Griffith, Frank Silva, John Arnett, Coach George Gardner. TENNIS TEAM The New Bedford High School tennis fans had looked forward to another successful season this year but were greatly disappointed when it was announced that there would be few tennis team games due to war restrictiors. There will be, however, a school tourna- ment. In past years under the guidance of Mr. Gardner, a very able coach, the tennis team has been a notable representative of our school in athletic fields. Mr. Gardner and such stellar players as Bill Sullivan, Gerald Piche, Walter Silva, and others, had planned an active season but found their efforts restrained. We are sure, though, that in future years our tennis team will again be one of New Bedford High School's highlights. 86 Rifleteam sharpshooters Research and experiment Reading in the library 5— Virgil’’ with Dr. Tukey Learning office practice Typing students SC pn etapa 2—The old study hall he new study room 4—Jr. Minute Men with stamp and bond sales Reading plays with Miss Rothwell Cafeteria and Vitamins 88 VOX POP I got my biggest thrill in New Bedford High School 1—When I entered here after going to small country schools in Maine for three years—Maxine Pinkham. 2—When I learned I would play a first team football position— Dennis Brault. 3—When I finally discovered I was going to graduate—J.
