Quitting her quiet berth, She bends her sail, sets bowsprit For uncertain seas! The ripples from her widening wake wash A silent beach .. . she sails alone. The test has come ... her maiden voyage— Will four long years of builders’ toil Prove all in vain? There will be storms and rising swells ahead— White capped waves and wayward tides Will ever press against her untried hull. Always her helm must be obeyed. Will she balk and be destroyed? Will she reach her distant port— Hold true upon her charted course? The Gods of time who know all things— Smiled, and in their records Wrote of a gallant ship that sailed away Under the shadows of doubt and fear, And which one day returned to port— A cargo of fame in her bulging hold.
