Some have given up and left ship, but those who have succeeded in reaching port are now equipped to start out on another voyage which will demand even more of their initiative and loyalty. On our maiden voyage, we have formed many friendships. Some of them will travel with us and help to make our future voyages more successful. As constant admirers of the courageous deeds and dauntless spirit of the early whalers of New Bedford we, in a small way, have sought to recapture that atmosphere in this volume. In presenting our records, cfhicers, class members, activities, and athletics the composers of the “Crimson Log” hope that treasured memories will be stirred once again. HaypeEN in deep appre- ciation of his friendship and generous help. SAS Sey OlsL© ‘Onward is our aim. J HESEAONGHING The last taut stay is severed, And slowly, down the fateful ways The new-made ship glides, silently. Quitting her quiet berth, She bends her sail, sets bowsprit For uncertain seas! The ripples from her widening wake wash A silent beach .. . she sails alone. The test has come ... her maiden voyage— Will four long years of builders’ toil Prove all in vain? There will be storms and rising swells ahead— White capped waves and wayward tides Will ever press against her untried hull. Always her helm must be obeyed. Will she balk and be destroyed? Will she reach her distant port— Hold true upon her charted course? The Gods of time who know all things— Smiled, and in their records Wrote of a gallant ship that sailed away Under the shadows of doubt and fear, And which one day returned to port— A cargo of fame in her bulging hold. The product of her builders’ finest art Did not betray their wildest dreams. George E. Burgess, Jr., ’41 s Ms: xs ) Ili FACULTY ALLISON R. Lawrence who by his geniality and jollity endeared himself to his fellow teachers and students. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts on December 9, 1901. He graduated from Boston University of Business Administration in 1923. On September 12, 1924, he first entered the New Bedford High School as a teacher. His death on July 10, 1940 was a shock to his friends and to his fellow faculty members and was a great loss to the high school. He was unusually well liked by both students and faculty nembers. . During the 15 years he had acted as faculty manager of High School Athletics, Mr. Lawrence was credited with expanding school athletic activities and obtained an enviable recognition for New Bed- ford High School throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. THE LOG OFST HE GEASSHOR | AINU ARI «194) With enthusiasm and some sadness, I retraced the voyage of the S.8. New Bedford through the years 1937-1941. I thought of the many ports we had reached, and the people who had left permanent marks in these particular ports. I knew that I would find in the Port of Leadership the captains and their crews who had guided us during our four years. I found our captain for the first year, Edward Sullivan; our First Mate, John W. Sullivan; our Yeoman, Constance Shaw; and our Purser, Gloria Guisti. There also was our second-year captain Sidney Lansky, and his crew of Marjorie Nelson, First Mate; Mildred Chase, Yeoman; and Walter Lewis, Purser. Captain Lansky retained his captaincy for the last three years. Walter Lewis became our First Mate during the third year aboard ship; Acracia Martin, Yeoman; and Mildred Chase, Purser. During our last year, John Souza was First Mate; Harriet Moriarty, Yeoman; and Mildred Chase, Purser. I went back to the Port of Honor, where I found those who had attained high honors in scholarship. Andronicky Haggis was admitted to the National Honor Society during the second year, and was the only one to be admitted during that year. Dorothy Ainsworth, Georgette Arruda, Mildred Chase, Ruth Grant, Harold Jaslow, Mary Lopes, Acracia Martin, Evelyn Normandin, Irene Provencher, and Har- vey Ryan, were Honor Society members admitted during the third year. Norman Cobb, Eleanor Colyer, Sophia Copach, Victoria Duarte, Marion Hutchinson, Helen Kielbasa, Sidney Lansky, Philip Lawrence, Ethel Mendoza, Doris Reul, Kasmer Smeka, and Pauline Tenczar were elected to membership in the National Honor Society during the fourth year. The Port of Welfare brought back many friends and fellow students who had carried on the charitable work done by the Girls’ League and the Hi-Y. Outstanding in these organizations were Lorraine Moriarty, president of the Girls’ League; and George Burgess, secretary of the Hi-Y. 38 Pepeneteen, ra Pers soe ies a a — a me ticend On entering the Port of Journalism, I met our outstanding journal- ist, Dorothy Ainsworth, editor-in-chief of the Crimson Log, and the members of her Classbook Committee. Coming to the Port of Athletics, I was met by Leonard Ashworth and Everett MacLeod, members of the football team; Albert Palmeiri and Edward Wojcik, members of the football, baseball, basketball teams; and Arthur Sylvaria, member of the basketball team. Albert Palmieri, Arthur Sylvaria, and Edward Wojcik were members of the basketball team of 1940 which brought fame to the class and to the school by winning the M. I. T. Tournament for the first time in the history of the school. Entering the Port of Government, I met Mildred Chase, president of the Student Council, accompanied by Dorothy Ainsworth, Sophia Copach, Elena Gagliardi, Kenneth Kroudvird, Gladys Lynam, Acracia Martin, Harriet Moriarty, Shirley Nunes, Herman Sherr, and Robert Wood, all members of the Student Council during our four years. I was also met by Bernard Carter, Fred Higgins, Robert Langley, and Mary LeValley, members of the Student Court. The Port of Military Science was occupied by many members of our class. Enrico di Benedetto attained the high rank of Major; and Robert Wood, Honorary Major. George Burgess, Edward Minnock, Richard Parr, Harvey Ryan, Earle Smith, and Edwin Wojtunik were made captains in the R. O. T. C. Happy memories were brought back to me on entering the Port of Pleasure. I remembered the fun we had at our 5 ’s St. Patrick Day Dance, 7’s “Dew Drop Inn” dance, our 8’s get-together, and our Senior Prom and Banquet. The retracing of our four year journey was filled with pleasure, as I remembered friends of by-gone years. After the first joys had passed, only the thought of our reunion helped my lagging spirits as I disem- barked from the S.S. New Bed ford. Its membership is determined by choosing representatives from each class in the regular class elections. The following is the scale for class representation: 6 representatives from the 7’s and 8’s; 5 from the 5’s and 6’s; 4 from the 3’s and 4’s; 3 from the 1’s and 2’s. Representation also includes the president of each class, the chief of traffic, and the chief justice of the court. These representatives bring up problems which have been called to their attention by the students they represent. Thse matters are discussed freely in council sessions, and recommendations are submitted to the faculty. In this manner, a democratic and practical way of deal- ing with school problems is provided for the student body. The advisors of the Student Council are Miss Marion E. Lord and . William E. King. Membership in this society is one of the highest honors in the school. In order to become a member of the Honor Society, the 3’s must have attained an average of at least 90 per cent for their first year’s work; the 5’s must have attained an average of 88 per cent for two years’ work; and the 7’s an average of 85 per cent for their three years’ work. RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS The National Defense Act authorized the organization of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The primary object of the Act is to provide systematic training at civil educational schools and colleges for the purpose of qualifying selected student s to appointment as re- serve officers or non-commissioned officers in the military forces of the United States. The R. O. T. C. affords to institutions a means of prac- tical training in organization, leadership, and discipline, which will be of value to these students in industrial or professional careers. The New Bedford Unit, under the leadership of Major L. H. Talia- ferro, has continued this term its various activities as well as its stand- ing as an honor unit. Major Taliaferro has been with the corps since October, 1940. Previously he had been retired at Fort Thomas, Ken- tucky. 54 iS. (Oye dhpal@, Under the training of Assistant Instructor Sergeant Harold G. Ken- dall, who is also a newcomer to this unit, the rifle team has earned recog- nition this term by placing second in New England competitions and by defeating challengers from all parts of the country in special matches. Other activities of the term included ushering at public functions, Participating in parades, and sponsoring the Officer’s Ball. Major Taliaferro believes that the unit is progressing in a spirit of resourcefulness, teamwork, and courtesy which is the ultimate goal of Peo). (training. PRENGEEGEUS The French Club was organized to give pupils a wider knowledge of France — its people and its customs — and to inspire the use of the French language in conversation. Miss Mary E. Ryan is the faculty advisor. SEUDENmCOURT The Student Court consists of a chief justice, five associate justices, a prosecuting attorney, a defense attorney, and a clerk, all of whom are appointed by the principal. The court works in cooperation with the trafic squad to enforce the rules of the school as laid down by the Stu- dent Council and the principal. Weekly sessions are held, and the penalty is usually in the form of detention periods. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club was formed for those juniors and seniors who are interested in the sciences. To be eligible for membership in this club, students must have completed one year of any science in the high school curriculum. The members listen to lectures by outside speakers, fellow members of the club and make visits to local industrial plants. Mr. Frank F. Hutchings is the faculty advisor. 3) PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club was organized for the benefit of the camera fans. Each member is required to have his own camera, to develop and print four rolls of film each semester. The club has its own dark room and equipment. Mr. Harold E. Willey is the faculty advisor. JUNIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE The Junior Girls’ League was organized in 1938 by Miss Marion E. Lord, to meet the needs of the freshmen and sophomore girls who were interested in service but were ineligible to join the Senior Girls’ League. JUNIOR HI-Y The Junior Hi-Y interests itself in the support of high ideals and in the maintenance of high standards of student conduct. The Junior Hi-Y chooses once a year those young men who are considered to be outstanding 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s. Their activities, atti- tude, and character, as well as their scholastic standing, are taken into consideration in selection of members. Mr. Irving Hodson is the advisor. JUNIOR RED CROSS This organization is affliated with the National Red Cross. A Junior Red Cross advisory Board is composed of two students from each home room. The whole student body has been automatically made a member of the Junior Red Cross and is actively engaged in its service. The unit is advised by Miss Marion E. Lord. THE NEW BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA Perhaps the oidest organization in the high school is the orchestra, directed by Mr. Clarence W. Arey. The orchestra plays at auditorium periods, gives concerts, and also plays for other outside organizations. There is also a second orchestra consisting of members who are less experienced and who receive orchestral instruction in preparation to becoming members of the first orchestra. 56 “MORE ANGLES ON THE SAME SUBJECT!” EM AE a BEL ate A Sta ant “For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name — He marks — not that you won or lost — but how you played the game.” —Grantland Rice. FOOTBALL 1940 The New Bedford High School Football Eleven has just finished a successful season despite injuries that handicapped an otherwise pow- erful club. During the season the Crimson lost three games, but they were well contested. Cranston, the Rhode Island State Champions, Brockton, a strong contender for the Massachusetts State Championship and the veteran Quincy eleven placed NBHS in the wrong column after hard fought battles. This served but to inspire the boys even more, with the result that they rose to new heights and took three consecutive victories. Vocational could not match their spirit as the boys won the City Championship 6-0. Fairhaven tried but failed 13-0 as Coach Dodge’s unit progressed until in a brilliant climax the Crimson annexed the Bristol County Championship on Thanksgiving Day. Our traditional rivals in Fall River were snowed under 32-0. 60 (1)—Walsh carrying for touchdown against Fairhaven. (2)—Brule carries for short gain against Vocational. BASKETBALL The 1939-40 basketball squad started its season with a nucleus of only two experienced men, Ferdinand Sowa and Al Palmieri. The ques- tion was, ““What kind of a team shall we have?” But as usual Coach Dodge turned out a surprisingly brilliant team. Starting off by beating East Providence, the boys developed into the smoothest, fastest team in the history of th e school. The climax came as Vocational was swept over 53 to 30, clinching an invitation to the 15th annual tournament at M. I. T. in Cambridge, Massachusets. At Boston the news scribes considered New Bedford as a fine team, but not favored to go in this fracas. By defeating Lawrence, 50 to 23 in the opening game, they broke the all-time scoring mark, which was just the beginning. The boys then defeated the highly rated Somerville team 30 to 26 to enter the final round. In the finals Haverhill was no match for our boys, and they raised the scoring mark to 53 points, a new high. Coach Dodge’s dream came true at last—an M. I. T. championship. 62 RECORD OF THE TEAM Opp. N.B East Providence ZY, 33 21 40 Rogers 12 32 30 45 Cranston 26 25 Brockton 26 28 2A 34 Tabor 24 44 18 41 Durfee 21 40 36 Ye Fairhaven 19 57 2h 42 Worcester Commerce 26 30 52 50 Vocational 30 26 30 bY) Holy Family 18 3A Worcester Classical 31 50 North Quincy 36 48 19 39 Attleboro 43 41 M. The fact that Pawtucket defeated the Crimson quintet 48 to 40 in no way detracts from the glory well deserved by the boys. It was a hard-fought battle, and the effects of a strenuous season had much to do with the defeat. The boys were praised for their gentlemanly behavior and sportsmanship — a compliment which offset the defeat. As this book goes to press, another group of athletes starts anew to carry on the record of true sportsmanship typical of our New Bedford Boys. 63 First row, left to right—David Sullivan, Carl Smith, Leroy Faltus, William Reedy, Louis Gonsalves, William Pell. BASEBALL The baseball team made an auspicious start last season by sweeping on to victory in their first five games. Then came a heart breaker with Vocational winning by the score of 4-3. They continued in a temporary slump, losing four straight games. Then with a change for the better the boys finished the season winning four out of the last five games. The Crimson outfit annexed the city championship by winning from Vocational two out of three thrill packed games. Six veterans will be lost next year: Sadowski, Sowa, Palmieri, Travers, Mellor, and Nisson. Built around a nucleus of fine young talent from last year, an excellent track squad is expected due to the patient and effective methods of Mr. Donaghy. Gordon Nute will be back to run and hurdle. Dias, a newcomer last year, will throw the shot, and Quentin Youngblood, Edgar Pineault, Kenneth Knowles, and Robert Bussey will return as a foundation on which to build. The meets this year include Northeastern, State Meet, Eastern Sea Board, and Tabor Academy. 65 First row, left to right—-William Maule, Michel Antone, George Izmirian, Carl F. W. Bergstrom, Coach. Edward Filipek, number one man, one of the finest young players ever to wield a racket for New Bedford High School is, so far, undefeated in all his matches in school competition. (Maybe) Tiow we sang “God Bless America” in the auditorium periods and thought about the nightly air raids on England. How we struggled through the morning after the night before, because we had neglected our home lessons. How Philip Lawrence and Dick Kestenbaum used to debate in Mr. Ringdahl’s history class. How the ready smile and genial manner of Mr. Lawrence made his classes a pleasure and the cafeteria a jolly place. How we left home lessons for the auditorium period and then found it was cancelled. How to obtain one of those 800 seats in cafeteria when 900 are in the ‘“‘mad scramble.” How Mr. Murdy’s broadcast, “May I have your attention, please?” used to startle us in the study halls. How we finished making our program one day — at 11.55 A. M. How very small and lost we felt when we first came to NBHS. And how very big and important we felt when the next class entered. How we hated to go home at 11 P. M. after those Friday socials — (or will we tell them that one?) How to avoid the rush on Program Making Day by becoming a member of the Honor Society or obtaining a “‘drag” with some teacher. How “Sid” Lansky was the first ““white-haired” boy and Major “Benny” (Di Benedetto to you) was the first to misplace an eyebrow. How we had fun at all the games and rallies after our victories. How Mr. Dorman hit a light bulb instead of the target on the R. O. T. C. rifle range. How the Hurricane on September 21, 1938 and the Blizzard on February 14, 1940 afforded us unexpected vacations. How red George Burgess’ face was when he made his report at Battalion Parade, “All accounted or present for,” instead of, ‘‘All present or accounted for.” How we all sang “Happy Birthday” to Miss Lord at the 8’s Get-together. How the famous trio, George Burgess, John Rebello, and Daniel Norte practiced so much they lost their voices and the three ‘“‘croaks”’ were greeted with a hail of pennies. How Dick Kestenbaum did a hula assisted by several amateurs at that never-to-be- forgotten 8’s Get-together. How we attempted to dance the Virginia Reel at the Get-together and ended up reeling. Thomas Payne III, ‘41 on a aaa. ae aie ==. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL The high school graduate of today must face a world beset with problems that no other generation of youth has ever faced. More than one half the population of the world has seen its ideals either actually destroyed or threatened with destruction. Freedom of movement, of the press, of educa- tion, of speech, of religion, of thought itself has been ruthlessly snatched from these people. Only to the relatively small number of men and women who are fortunate enough to reside in the few remaining democracies are these highly prized privileges of freedom still granted. The political and economic life of hundreds of millions of people has come under the sway of certain small minorities who enforce the rule of “Might Makes Right’. Everything in life must be subordinated to this in- human principle and to the will of the individuals who enforce it. The two greatest problems the youth of today must face are: the attempts of un-American agencies to break down our liberty-allowing form of govern- ment and substitute for it the enslaving type of totalitarian control; the solu- tion of the problem of building anew the political and economic life of the world when the present war conditions are a thing of the past. To solve these problems will require the careful study of educated minds — minds that have been trained to enable the individuals to think compre- hensively and farsightedly. The American people believe in the education of all their youth. They believe that individual initiative, encouraged and strengthened by education, is the best defense against the threatened attacks on their freedom from those who would destroy it. The high school graduate of today has been fortified with the training of the best educational system in the world. Will he be able in the years to come to meet and to solve these problems? The nation believes he will. The fate and the faith of America are vested in him. ALLISON R. DORMAN. HONOR SOCIETY Unlike other organizations of the school, membership in the Honor Society is by invi- tation, extended only to students of high scholarship, possessing qualities of leadership, ser- vice, and character. Therefore, membership to this society is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a student. In order to be considered eligible for the Honor Society, a 3 must attain an average of 90% for the freshman term; a 5 must average 88% for the freshman and sophomore work combined; and a 7 must average 85% for three years of studies. Miss Susan E. Shennan, educational counselor, has been faculty adviser for this group since its organization on October 14, 1927. DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club offers an opportunity for thespian-minded students to cultivate and display their talents. When the annual spring play is presented each May, their accomp- lishments are shown to the public. In the past, favorable impressions have been left in the minds of their audiences after seeing such plays as ‘Stage Door,” ‘Growing Pains,’”’ and “June Mad.” The three-act comedy, “Don't Take My Penny,” presented this year was no exception. In order to become a member of the Dramatic Club, a student must give a dramatic reading before the Executive Board, which is comprised of the club officers, the mem- bership committee, and the faculty advisers. If the student shows dramatic ability, he is invited to join the organization. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Officers of the Dramatic Club for this term are Anna May Johnson, president; Sidney Kaplan, vice-president; Beverly Taber, secretary; and Clement Howe, treasurer. The members of the faculty committee who advise the Dramatic Club are Carl F. W. Bergstrom, chairman; Miss Louise B. Finnell and Miss Anna Dorgan, supervisors of produc- tion activities; Miss Ruth B. SENIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE Whenever a helping hand is needed, it is no surprise to see approximately fifty Girls’ League members ready to give more than their share of aid. The purpose of the League is to encourage members in usefulness in living, joyousness of giving, naturalness of being, and readiness in serving. Probably the most outstanding service rendered by Girls’ League members is the filling of Christmas baskets for needy families of High School students. Throughout the year mem- bers are busy working at the Red Cross and City Mission, giving parties for the less fortunate and sponsoring affairs for the benefit of others. In order to join the Girls’ League, which meets each Wednesday, prospective members fill out applications which are brought to the attention of the Executive Board whenever a vacancy occurs. As the membership is limited, only girls who receive a unanimous vote are accepted. Serving as officers this term are Dorothy Woodland, president; Helen Savoie, vice-pres- ident; Eleanor Dunham, secretary; and Gloria Giusti, treasurer. Miss Marion E. Lord is the faculty adviser. 60 First row, left to right—Arthur Spurrier, Treasurer; William Muldoon, president; Bradford Brightman, secretary; Edward Anderson, vice-president; Melver C. SENIOR HI-Y The Senior Hi-Y has for its purpose the creating and maintaining of high standards of Christian character throughout the school andcommunity. Ina strict sense the club belongs to the school only because its members are boys of the senior and junior classes. The club was organized in 1922 by Richard Dunwoodie, now director of counseling and guidance at the Y. M. C. A. William E. Gordon, present director of boy’s work in the Y. M. C. A. and an adviser of the Hi-Y, was the first president of the club. Since reorganization in 1928, Mr. Bergstrom, Mr. Donaghy, and Mr. McPeake, all of the faculty, have served as advisers. The boys regard as their outstanding achievement the establishment two years ago of a fund for injured athletes. The highlights of this year’s work were the services given the American Red Cross in its campaign and the drive to raise funds for an electric score- board to be placed in the school gymnasium. Present officers are William Muldoon, President; Edward Anderson, Vice-President; Bradford Brightman, Secretary; and Arthur Spurrier, Treasurer. Melver C. Felton is faculty adviser. 61 Front row, left to right—Carolyn Gardner, vice-president; Barbara Rusitzky, president; Edith Rubin, secretary. JUNIOR GIRLS’ LEAGUE Patterned after the Senior League, the Junior Girls’ League is comprised of girls from the freshman and sophomore classes who are interested in aiding people and serving them to the best of their ability. Members do a great deal of knitting for the Red Cross and send many packages con- taining games, jokes, magazines, and novelties to hospitals. Meetings are held every Friday under the advisership of Miss Marion E. Lord. Barbara Rusitzky is president; Carolyn Gardner, vice-president; Edith Rubin, secretary; and Hannah Lawrence, treasurer. 62 First row, left to right—Caleb Hayward, secretary; Arthur Ashley, president; Eric Talmage, vice president; Charles Fontaine, treasurer. Second row—John Ruggles, Raymond Smith, Francis Hinds, Walter Manchester, Donald White, William Bancroft, Donat Couet, Leforne Sequeira, Irving Ross. Third row—Robert Kasmire, Edwin Kasprzyk, Daniel Galligan, William Sullivan, Walter Beau- mont Arnold Boomer, James Ryan, Hampton Duxbury, Walter Brightman. JUNIOR HI-Y The Junior Hi-Y, an organization for boys, is under the supervision of William E. King, faculty adviser, and William Gordon, Y. M. C. A. adviser. Meetings are held each Tueday evening at the Y. M. C. A. The group distinctly interests itself in the support of high ideals and the maintenance of high standards of student conduct. Social, cultural, and charitable projects within the school and community are sponsored by the club. Members are selected each year from a group of outstanding freshmen and soph- omores. In the selection of members, their activities, attitude, and character are con- sidered as well as their scholastic standing. Present officers are Arthur Ashley, president; Eric Talmadge, vice-president; Caleb Hayward, secretary; Charles Fontaine, treasurer; and Leforne Sequeira, publicity. 63 First row, left to right—Helen Pars, John McGrath, Sybil Minkin, Barbara Andrews. Fourth row—Philip Gregory, Edward McNally, Bernard Herman, David Meltzer, Hugh Allison, Lawrence Bertmam, Milton Rosen, David Narva. STUDENT COUNCIL The principles of democracy are daily practiced by students of the High School, and their effectiveness can be shown in no better way than by their Student Council. This council is the governing body of the school. It is made up of representatives elected by members of each class. At the meetings, held every other Tuesday, members discuss and act upon measures which will better the school. Members of the 7's and 8’s classes send six representatives to the council; 5’s and 6's send five representatives; 3’s and 4’s send four representatives; and l’s and 2's send three representatives. Other members of the Student Council are the presidents of each class. chief of the Traffic Squad, and chief justice of the Student Court. Officers of this term are John McGrath, president; Barbara Andrews, vice-president; Sybil Minkin, secretary; and Helen Pars, treasurer. Miss Marion E. Lord and William E. King are the faculty advisers. First row, left to right—David Narva, Dorothy Weissent, Helen Kwiatkowski, Edward McNally, Chief Justice; Margery Nelson, Barbara Aindow, Mary-Jayne Anthony. Second row—David Saltus, Norman Kares, Willis Tripp. STUDENT COURT The Student Court aids the Traffic Squad in enforcing the rules of the school which are made by the Student Council and the principal. Every Friday, students who have received traffic tickets for misdemeanors appear before the court, where they are usually given seventh periods as a penalty. Those who receive these tickets are given an opportunity to prepare their defense with a defense attorney. The court consists of a chief justice, six associate justices, defense, assistant defense, and prosecuting attorneys, and the clerk of court, all of whom are appointed by the prin- cipal. This term Edward McNally is the chief justice. 65 First row, left to right—Elsie McLeod, Evelyn Jeglinski, Philip Gregory, Marjorie Kelly, Wanda Dabrowska. Second row—Floyd Brightman, Lionel Cabral, Claire Messier, Estelle Baron, Dorothy Sterling, Mary Murphy, Doris Methot, Raymond Correia, Quentin Youngblood. Third row—Hampton Duxbury, Louis Ramos, Arthur Spurrier, Walter Brightman, David Thoen, Walter Crosby, Lucien Laferriere, Bradford Gatenky. TRAFFIC SQUAD Members of the Traffic Squad work with faculty members in order to maintain or- der throughout the school. Tickets are issued to all students who do not obey school regulations, and stu- dents receiving these tickets appear in the Student Court where they are given due pun- ishment. Philip Gregory, chief of the Traffic Squad, is assisted by two assistant chiefs, twen- ty district chiefs, and two hundred marshals. 66 BAND Under the capable direction of Clarence W. Arey, the band, whether it plays at foot- ball games, parades, auditorium periods, or civic affairs, is always a credit to the school. The High School band has also played an important part in the lives of some of its members. Many former members have gone on with their musical studies and are now playing in some of the famous symphony orchestras, as well as some of the equally famous swing bands. This year the band is doing its part to help Uncle Sam by playing for the military parades each week at Fort Rodman. 67 Front row, left to right—Ralph Geffen, president; Selma Poll, secretary; William Sachs, vice pres. Second row—Freda Lipman, Lillian Hive, Irene Kon, Imogene Dickenson, Pauline Auger, Violet Vinho, Hope Farren. Third row—Irving Miller, Shoshanah Rothkoff, Dorothy Howes, Sheldon Levine. ALPHA DEBATING SOCIETY This term the Alpha Debating Society turned over a new leaf, and it is now on its way to becoming one of the most popular clubs in the school. The purpose of the society is to give its members an opportunity to acquire poise and the ability to express their ideas convincingly. It also gives members a foundation for de- bating and supplies trained material for the Varsity Debating Team, which is sponsored by the society. Miss Fay H. Newland is the club adviser; Ralph Geffen is president; William Sachs, vice- president; Selma Poll, secretary; and Stanley Goldstein, treasurer. Meetings are held every Tuesday under the advisership of Miss Mary Ryan. C. affords to colleges and high schools a means of practical training and academic instruction in organization, leadership, discipline, and other pertinent sub- jects. It is composed of capable young men with a military bend. The results of each year’s work are demonstrated at the annual inspection while the exhibitionary phases contribute to the entertainment on the occasion of semi-annual drills and balls. Membership is open to sophmores of creditable scholastic standing, physical soundness, and amenability to military direction. The New Bedford High School R. O. T. C. is an honor unit by War Department desig- nation. At the present time Major Lucien H. Taliaferro, U. S. Army retired, is the pro- fessor of military science and tactics. 70 JUNIOR RED CROSS The New Bedford High School Junior Red Cross Unit was organized in October 1940, as a division of the American Red Cross. It serves as a permanent medium of relation- ship between the High School and the local chapter, insuring active cooperation between them. Besides learning first aid and making surgical dressings, members of this unit made joke cards and collected books and games that were sent to Fort Rodman and Camp Edwards. This unit is comprised of two representatives from each home room who meet the first Monday of each month. Officers for this term include Edward Filipek, president; Betty Louise Cunningham, vice- president; Helen Johnson, secretary; and Helen Pars, treasurer. Miss Marion E. Lord is the faculty adviser. AVIATION CLUB The Aviation Club was organized in the spring of 1939 for aviation-minded students. At the meetings held each Monday under the advisership of George F. Cronin, talks on aviation are given and various types of models are exhibited. Officers of the club are Wayne James, president; Renato Barreto, vice-president; and Donald McGowen, secretary. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB For the past few years, young and old alike have shown an increasing interest in photography, and so it is only natural that the school should have a photography club for the benefit of camera fans. The club has its own dark room and equipment. At the meet- ings held every other Monday, members are taught the process of developing and printing pictures. Officers of the club include Patricia E. May, president; Herbert Isreal, vice-president; and Rita Desjardins, secretary-treasurer. Harold E. Willey, science teacher, is the faculty adviser. MIMEOGRAPH CLUB Almost every afternoon, members of the Mimeograph Club may be found working at the Mimeograph duplicator and Mimeoscope in the northwest corner of Miss Marion E. Pet- erson’s room. Organized in September 1939, this club teaches seniors of the commercial division mim- eograph duplication and aids the faculty by mimeographing examinations. This term Raymond F. Correia is the student supervisor. He is assisted by Helen Pars and Doris Methot. ORCHESTRA One of the oldest organizations in the school, the orchestra is under the direction of Clarence W. Arey. The orchestra plays for auditorium periods, outside organizations, and gives special concerts. There is also a second orchestra, which is composed of less exper- ienced players who receive orchestral instruction in preparation for becoming members of the first orchestra. 7) ATHLETICS “For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name— He marks—not that you won or lost—but how you played the game.” Grantland Rice Center Front — Coach Winston S. During the season the Crimson lost three games, but they were well contested. Cranston, the Rhode Island State Champions, Brockton, a strong contender for the Massachusetts State Championship, and the veteran Quincy eleven placed NBHS in the wrong column after hard fought battles. This served but to inspire the boys even more, with the result that they rose to new heights and took three consecutive victories. Vocational could not match their spirit as the boys won the City Championship 6-0. Fairhaven tried but failed 13-0 as Coach Dodge's unit progressed until in a brilliant climax the Crimson annexed the Bristol County Champ- ionship on Thanksgiving Day. Our traditional rivals in Fall River were snowed under 32-0. 74 | ra (1) Walsh carrying for touchdown against Fairhaven (3) Buckley carrying for Quincy is stopped (2) Brule carries for short gain against Vocational (4) Lombardi, Quincy, carries Opp. N.B. BASKETBALL In the past few years the Crimson's basketball teams have been very successful on the court; the year 1941 has proven to be far from an exception. The ‘’41 ’ aggregation work- ed its way to the long end of a 21 game schedule by winning 18 and losing 4. Among the 18 victories, the game in which Brockton was swamped 44-10, the second game with Brock- ton that ended 27-25 in a “sudden death” period, and the 24-22 win over Attleboro all seem to be worth mentioning. The games at M. I. T. provided all sorts of excitement for the players and spectators both. The first game with Beverly in the opening rounds of the tournament was won by the score of 31-28, after the Dodgemen overcame a bad case of what was called the “jitters.” In the second game, our impaired players were completely overcome by a stronger team from Rindge Technical, 34-25. Individual honors went to Captain Stanley Grabiec when he was chosen by the Boston sports writers as a guard on the All-Tech Tournament team. Al Palmeiri, Haskel Handler, Art Sylvaria, Ed Wojick, Dante Ballestraci, and Dick Wilkinson are other players who de- serve all the credit that can be given to them for their hard work during the first half of the season. Members of the team who are graduating and who have done a fine job all during the basketball year are Mike Panagakos, a diminutive sharpshooting forward who thrilled many people with his dribbling and shooting performances; Billy Burns, a flashy forward; and Kenneth Clapp, a loose-jointed ballhandling artist who was stationed at a guard position. 76 The members of this year’s New New New New New New New New New New New New team are as follows: Forwards Mike Panagakos George Monteiro Billy Burns Louis Gonsalves Centers Marianno Gentili Ray Foy Ed Filipek Guards Captain Stanley Grabiec Paul Walsh Bob Ramos Ken Clapp Gus Bowen BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Bedford 29 Cranston Bedford 37 Alumni Bedford 33 Rogers Bedford 41 Salem Bedford 54 East Providence Bedford 44 Brockton Bedford 49 East Greenwich Bedford 29 Salem Bedford 27 Brockton Bedford 37 Fairhaven Bedford 41 Durfee Bedford 68 East Greenwich Won 18 — Lost 4 47 35 18 23 39 10 27 40 25 18 24 18 ya | New New New New New New New New New New New New Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford Bedford 40 58 54 31 34 4] 24 92 39 31 25 Rogers Fairhaven Durfee Worcester Classical Vocational Holy Family Attleboro Vocational East Providence Attleboro Beverly Rindge Technical 24 29 18 33 17 19 22 30 22 22 28 34 First row, left to right—George Monteiro, Kenneth Knowles, Joseph Cova. They were with Brockton, Dartmouth, and Rogers. Of these games, two were lost. The game with Dartmouth was a decisive victory for New Bedford. The final score being 9 to 0. It is too early in the season to pass any judgment on the team, but it is believed that the team will develop into a steady winner. These possibilities are made all the brighter when one sees Maury Robillard, Louis Gonsalves, Art Davidian, Dante Ballestracci, Captain Stan Grabiec, Carl Smith, and Henry Trahan in Coach Dodge's lineup. Robillard, the only member of the baseball team who is graduating, has played three years of first team ball. He is one of the best pitchers that New Bedford High School has turned out in a long time. Twe games with Pawtucket East, Holy Family, Durfee, Vocational, and Fairhaven, and one game with Brockton, Rogers, and Dartmouth will end the season for the Crimson. Paw- tucket East is a newcomer on the schedule. The results of the games played to date are as follows: Brockton 4 New Bedford 2 Dartmouth 0 New Bedford 9 Rogers 3 New Bedford 2 78 Seated, left to right—Raymond Piche, Larry Chongarlides, manager. TRACK This year’s track team lost both its meets during the Winter to Tabor Academy and Dedham, but the boys glorified themselves by winning second place in Class B of the East- ern Massachusetts Interscholastics and taking second place in a relay at the Eastern Massa- chusetts Seaboard Relay Carnival. In comparison with other years, this season’s indoor record has been fairly successful. To date the track team has competed in only one out door contest, the Interscholastic Meet held at Worcester Polytech. Against strong competition, the cindermen garnered only three points to gain 12th place. Meets with Quincy, Fairhaven, Dedham, Durfee, East Prov- idence, and a trip to Newton to compete in the State Meet will complete the schedule. Because of graduation, Mr. Donaghy, our very able and likeable coach, will be minus the services of the following men: Harry Booth and Charles Felix, distance men; Bob Bussey and Gil Seigal, dash men; Henry Hebert, a middle distance winner; and Gordon Nute, a weight man. 79 ES Left to right—George Gardner, Coach; Edward Filipek, Frank Silva, Kenneth Clapp, Robert Lesco, William Sullivan, George Izmiriam, Arthur Bressette. TENNIS With the season barely underway at the time of writing, an accurate estimate of the team cannot be made. However, with Eddie Filipek, the player who has gone undefeated for three years wielding a racket, the outlook for Coach Gardner's team looks much bright- er. Kenneth Clapp is another member of the team who has done a good job. He hasn't won every match that he has played, but he has won the majority of them. Other mem- bers of the team are George Izmirian, William Sullivan, Robert Lesco, Arthur Bressette and Frank Silva. Kenneth Clapp and Robert Lesco are playing their last season. The results of the matches played are: April 30 Moses Brown 8 Nebel May 10 (Rained out) May 6 Pawtucket 2 N. B? 7 May 13 Durfee 3 N. Coach—Sumner E. Marvell. GOLF At present, the golf team stands second behind Barnstable in the Southeastern Massachu- setts Interscholastic Golf League with a record of three wins and one loss. The three victories that Mr. Marvell's boys have made were over Taunton by the score of 6% to 2%; Dartmouth, 9-0; and Vocational, 7!4-11%. The loss was to Barnstable, the team that has a perfect record of three wins and no defeats. To be able to call it a season the team must play matches with Fairhaven, Taunton, Dartmouth, Barnstable and Vocational. Next year, Eddie Anderson, Bob Herbst, Ray Castino and Cliff Trott will be among the missing. All of these players have made names for themselves in the local golfing circles. Cliff Trott and Ray Castino are the league’s leading twosome. 81 te HEADING HOME “For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories.” Plato Qu Memoriam In Memoriam of Charles S. Ashley, New Bed- ford's leading citizen and Mayor of this city for 32 years until his retirement in January of 1937. As the first graduating class of New Bedford High School since his recent death, we honor his memory for his ever deep interest in giving New Bedford boys and girls the best of schools, play- grounds, parks, and beaches. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” CLASS HISTORY It was a September morning in the year 1937 when a number of boys and girls enlisted on the training ship New Bedford. On this ship they would be trained to make decisions and be more capable when it was time for them to embark on the Sea of Experience. They elected to guide them through their first year the following officers: Bradford Brightman, Captain; Louise Martin, First Mate; Lawrence Burns, Second Mate; and Audrey Kerley, Quartermaster. During this first year some of the crew were elected into the Honor Society. They were George Gardner, Selma Poll, Janet Riley, Hilda Sylvia, Beverly Taber, Gladys Wollison, and Bernice Tablas. We held a supper and dance during our first year which enabled us to become better acquainted with our fellow passengers. Following a very eventful and successful journey, we landed on a love- ly island and enjoyed a much needed vacation. When we resumed our trip in September 1939, a number of adventurous passengers had joined our crew. This year our officers were Louis Fateau, Captain; Curtis Bessette, First Mate; Louise Martin, Second Mate; and Theresa Brazie, Quartermaster. The following members of the crew were elected to the Honor Society-Mary Alexander, Florence Allison, Curtis Bessette, Helen Bettencourt, Robert Butler, Gilda Cabral, Mary Carter, Janina Dzuibezk, Charles Felix, James Gabriel, Laura Gorczyca, Edith Greenfield, Alice Holden, Stella Jodoin, Anna Johnson, Norman Kares, Helen Kwiat- kowski, Lillian Lopes, Joseph Martin, Florence Menino, Barbara Mirsky, Helen Pars, Lucy Podbielski, Stephanie Popielarz, William Rebello, Frank Regula, Lucy Simcick, Shirley Torres, John Zygiel, and Irene Provencher. The members of the crew who decided to join the Dramatic Club and try their hand at entertaining the rest of us with their dramatic ability were Natalie Cash, George Gardner, Robert Herbst, Anna Johnson, Hope Lumi- ansky, Louise Martin, Selma Poll, Beverly Taber, and Frances Taylor. Other crew members participated in various activities such as the R. O. T. C., orchestra, band, sports, and debating. Before we knew it our second year had passed. 85 The officers to carry us through our junior year were Florence Menino, Captain; Shirley Nunes, First Mate; Louise Martin, Second Mate; and Beverly Taber, Quartmaster. Crew members who showed a willingness to learn and who were elected to the Honor Society were Beatrice Arruda, Floyd Bright- man, John Britto, Lionel Cabral, Betty Cunningham, Elizabeth Dalessandro, Eleanor Dunham, Ernest Fonseca, Deolinda Fontes, Virginia Francis, Lydia Hathaway, Beatrice Ingham, Stella Kagan, Merope Koutrompis, Lillian Main- ville, Doris Methot, Milton Nichols, Frank Parsons, Miriam Priaulx, Edward Provost, Jeanne Rainville, Laura Ribeiro, Alda Rodriques, Claire Saucier, Elizabeth Spooner, Arlinda Telles, Irene Tetreault, Clifford Trott, Barbara White, and Lillian Wobecky. Members of the crew elected to represent us in the Student Council were Florence Menino, Barbara White, Anna Johnson, Patricia May, Emery Maynard, and Selma Poll. The stage called such mem- bers as Marjorie Converse, Ruth Gregory, Sidney Kaplan, Edward Koehler, Emery Maynard, Barbara Mirsky, Janet Riley, Peggy Putnam, and Eva Mark. The highlight of this term proved to be the minstrel show. Members of the crew participated in the show and dancing was enjoyed after the per- formance. After a vacation which seemed far too short, we embarked on our last and most enjoyable year which was full of excitement, hard work, and an abundance of fun. The officers elected by the crew to steer them through their most important year were John McGrath, Captain; Norman Audette, First Mate; Janet Riley, Second Mate; and Beverly Taber, Quartermaster. Because Norman Audette resigned, we elected a new First Mate--Bradford Brightman. Patricia May, Estelle Baron, Helen Pars, Alice Holden, Joseph Brierly, and Charles Alves were elected as representatives to the Student Council. Crew members who attained highest honors were Beverly Taber, Helen Bettencourt, Lillian Lopes, Florence Allison, Mary Alexander, George Gard- ner, Alice Holden, James Gabriel, Robert Butler, Curtis Bessette, Stella Jodoin, Stephanie Popielarz. The Dramatic Club found real talent in William Hayes, John Hronopulus, Sheldon Levine, Billy Muldoon, Thomas Payne, Donald Parker, Edward Anderson, and John Zygiel. The club presented the play “Don't Take My Penny” to an audience who appreciated the dramatic ability of Beverly Taber, Natalie Cash, John Zygiel, Anna Johnson, William Muldoon, and William Hayes. Sports such as tennis, track, football, baseball, basketball, and golf called Henry Hebert, Gilbert Siegal, Gordon Nute, Harry Booth, Edward Anderson, Robert Herbst, Charles Panagakos, Kenneth Clapp, Edward Melanson, William Muldoon, and Robert Lesco. Several boys and girls who showed a tendency to become music-minded and joined the band and orchestra were Dorothy Woodland, Robert Mogil- 86 nicki, Barbara White, Bradford Brightman, James Gabriel, Charles Gifford, Richard Walder, Barbara Mirsky, and Doris Lord. Boys who turned to service work and joined the Hi-Y were William Mul- doon, Gordon Nute, Edward Anderson, Bradford Brightman, Warren Holt, James Caton, Edward Melanson, Donald Parker, Howard Seaver, George McCarthy, Edward Provost, and Clifford Trott. The R. O. T. C. called such boys as Major Joseph Martin, Honorary Major George Gardner, Captains Wilfred Caron, Louis Ramos, and Curtis Bessette; First Lieutenants Benjamin Barriero, George Marcotte; Second Lieutenants Bradford Brightman, Roland Provost, Ronald Taylor, John Mc- Grath, Manuel Simmons, Lawrence Burns, Edward Backus, Raymond Du- four, Donald White, Edward Alexander, and Lawrence Marshall. Crew members who were interested in law who entered the Student Court were Edward McNally, Chief Justice; Barbara Aindow, Prosecution; Marjorie Nelson, Defense; and Helen Kwiatkowski, Clerk. Girls who were interested in the Girls’ Welfare League and who gave their services when needed were Dorothy Woodland, Helen Savoie, Eleanor Dunham, Gloria Giusti, Mary Lou LaBrode, Betty Cunningham, Betty Ann Mackintosh, Patricia May, Margaret Putnam, Virginia Sullivan, Eva Mark, Dorothy Dillies, Anna Harrington, Jane Howard, Claire Adams, Natalie Cash, Mary Jane Galligan, Claire Gamache, Bertha Moreau, Barbara White, Leonor Luiz, Pearl Rytelewski, Betty Shanks, Janet Riley, Beverly Taber, Bernice Tablas, Ethel Manley, and Jeanne Pate. The crew held a get-together which consisted of a supper followed by dancing. Entertainment was provided by several members of the class. The time flew by far too fast, and before we knew it, the Prom and Ban- quet were here and gone. On June 26, 1941 we received our diplomas which certified that we were ready for the long, arduous trip on the Sea of Experience. A happy and prosperous bon voyage--Class of 1941!
