In retrospection this glad day will seem Happier still, its subtle joys revealed; The golden windows of our past will gleam Brighter than now, their beauty unconcealed, Shining through time with glory unforeseen; Distance enchants, and far-off fields are green. DOW — 1939 Teacher of English January 1914—June 1939. Head of English Department May 1923—June 1939. New Bed- ford High School. GIFASS seis LOM All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” As the curtain rises in January, 1936, on the first act of our scholas- tic drama, we find a group of young and ambitious students making their debuts on the New Bedford High School stage of education. These promising actors, through hard work and determination, hope to complete successfully their four-year “run’’. We find, in the leading roles, Christopher Townsend as president, Kenneth Bean as vice-president, Hilda Rodman as secretary, and Mar- jorie Jason as treasurer. In the supporting cast, Carlton Mendell, Muriel Parent, and Patricia Leary play their parts admirably as members of the Student Council. Our play progresses to the second act in which a group of young aspirants join our cast. The stars in this act are Henry Mickelson, Kenneth Bean, Janet Miller, and Janet Petavino, who play the rol es of president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. The featured players are Marjorie Jason, Muriel Parent, and Gloria Tracy, who act as members of the Student Council. Receiving deserved rec- ognition at this point are Ruth Geffen, Artemis Georges, Bertram Hor- vitz, Patricia Leary, and Janet Miller, who are invited into the Honor Society because of their splendid performances during the first act. As the third act gets under way, Christopher Townsend and Mar- jorie Jason are called back for encores to continue their work as president and treasurer, while Virginia Zielinski carries the role of vice-president, and Joseph Tatro, that of secretary. Samuel Mickel son, Kenneth Bean, Marjorie Jason, Geraldine Marshall, and Virginia Zielinski are selected as the most competent to carry out their parts in the Student Council, Marjorie Jason serving as treasurer and secretary of this organization. At this point of our drama, we find Hilda Rodman, Mildred Pomfret, Theodore Bogdziewicz, Dorothy Brody, Louis Cambra, Cecelia Rose, Freeman Schlais, Stephanie Stanek, Stella Stanek, William Walsh, and Constance Monjeau prominent in the cast as members of the Honor Society. 40 As the spotlight turns on the final act of our play, we find our cast giving their best performances, realizing that t he “run” of their play is to end January 25, 1940. The principal players chosen for this act are Louis Cambra, president; Eileen Carroll, vice-president; Con- stance Guba, secretary; and Samuel Mickelson, treasurer. Virginia Zielinski, Geraldine Marshall, Gloria Tracy, Dorothy Wright, and Man- uel Camara step into the spotlight as members of the Student Council, where Manuel Camara portrays the part of president, supported by Virginia Zielinski and Gloria Tracy as secretary and treasurer. Twelve more people receive fame by being admitted into the Honor Society. They are Ellen Bartlett, Hyman Epstein, William Gennert, Irene Gerber, Samuel Mickelson, William Perry, Dorothy Shkolnick, Raymond Sullivan, Gloria Tracy , Janice Wilson, Mary Delano, and Normand Greenman. Assisting William Walsh as president, are Hilda Rodman and Gloria Tracy as secretary and treasurer. In the last act an ‘‘8’s Get-together’’, given exclusively for the cast, marks a successful social occasion. At this point let us turn our attention away from the stage and center it upon the various school organizations where our actors, in their spare time, play prominent parts. Girls achieving success in the Girl’s League are Hilda Rodman, president; Virginia Zielinski, vice-president; Janice Wilson, secretary and Gloria Tracy, treasurer. In the Hi-Y, William Mee and James Metcalfe serve as vice-presi- dent and secretary, respectively. We find in the Dramatic Club, Constance Guba acting as secre- tary and Virginia Zielinski as treasurer. Those who have displayed their dramatic ability in various plays produced on our stage are Vir- ginia Zielinski, Carlton Mendell, Henry Mickelson, Marie Healy, Wilson Bonneau, Theodore Bogdziewicz and Constance Guba. Our famed athletic heroes are: On the gridiron; Carlton Mendell, Edward Riley, Richard Seaver, Eugene Pallatroni, and John Macy. 41 Our cheerleaders who have helped spur the boys on to victory are Jean Dufresne, Janet Pietavino, Virginia Zielinski, and Constance Guba. In basketball; Edward Riley, John Gero, and Eugene Pallatroni. In golf; Carlton Mendell. In baseball; Alex Economos. Honorary positions in the Student Court are held by Marjorie Jason, Chief Justice; Helen Webster, Clerk of Court; and Henry Mickelson, Prosecuting Attorney. Marjorie Jason and Janet Miller both receive honor for acting as drum-majors of our band. The R. O. T. C. has offered many of the boys a chance to gain prominence, Donald Mulkerne heading the unit as student major. Other officers are Theodore Bogdziewicz, captain; Roger L’Heureux, captain; Arthur Bouley, captain; John Bassett, 1st lieutenant; Samuel Mickelson, 2nd lieutenant, and Manuel Viera, 2nd lieutenant. As the spotlight shifts back to the stage, we find in the final act the last social events for the cast. In a setting picturesque with gleam- ing lights and flowing gowns, the Senior Banquet and Senior Prom provide everyone with a thoroughly enjoyable time. On January 25, with diploma in hand and sadness in our hearts, the lights dim and the curtain falls on our drama. We set forth, this time armed with four years preparedness, to gain our place on the stage of life. The president of each class and the chief of the Trafhe Squad are automatically members. These representatives bring to the Student Council meetings suggestions and ideas made by their fellow students. These ideas are discussed and then submitted to the faculty adviser to be considered. 5 During the fall the council sends delegates and representatives to the Student Council Conven- tion. This year the convention was held in Fairhaven. The Student Council is under the guidance of Miss Lord and the assistant adviser Mr. King. This organization was organized for the purpose of giving due recognition to all students who have attained a high average in their school work and who possess qualities of leadership, service, and character. This organization also urges the students on to improvement so that they, too, may become members of the organization. In order to become a member of the Honor Society the 3’s must have attained an average of 90% or over for their first year’s work; the 5’s must have attained an average of 88% or over for two year’s work; and th e 7’s an average of 85% or over for their three year’s work. Each term an induction ceremony is held and the new members are introduced into the society and receive their certificates. Miss Susan E. Shennan, the Educational Counselor, is the faculty adviser. RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING GORPS (R: On] sae The Reserve Officers Training Corps, which is generally referred to as the R. O. T. C, is a corps of young men in our school and colleges undergoing military training. The object of this organization is to provide systematic training at civil educational schools and colleges for the purpose of qualifying selected students for appointment as Reserve Officers in the military forces of the United States. The R. O. T. C. is authorized and maintained by the National Defense Act. There are two types of Units, the Senior Units in college and universities and the Junior Units, such as we have in New Bedford High School. To secure a commission a student must have success- fully completed the course prescribed for Senior Units and have performed satisfactory work at summer camp. The R. O. T. C. affords to institutions a means of practical training in organization, leadership. and discipline, which will be a value to their graduated students in an industrial or professional career. Irrespective of the military service which these men may render in the future, the training they receive has a profound effect upon their lives, in that it promotes self control, resourcefulness, team- work, patriotism, and respect for legal authority. 56 It awakens in the student an appreciation of the obligations of citizenship and prepares him to better discharge his duties as a citizen. R. O. T. C. training at the New Bedford High School is voluntary and is confined to the upper three classes. The strength of the Unit is about 275 boys organized as a battalion of three companies. The quota for the school has always been oversubscribed, this year more so than in the past. The rifle team has three times in the past won the coveted Hearst Trophy which has been competed for annually by high schools in all the United States. It has on many occasions won the champ- ionship of the First Corps Area. Last year it placed second in the Corps Area. The Unit is rated by the War Department as an Honor Unit. The instructors are Major G. Ross Rede, FA, DOL, P.M.S. T. and Sergeant George Osman, Inf., .D.E.M.L. GHIESSEGLUB The Chess Club is under the direction of Mr. Worden. The presiding officers for this term are: President—William Gennert Vice-President—Harold Jaslow Secretary—Estelle Baron Treasurer—Gertrude Malick The meetings of the club are held every Monday. At the team tournament the High School team was defeated by the New Mexico teacher’s team. . JUNIOR HI-Y The Junior Hi-Y is under the supervision of Mr. King. The meetings are held every Tuesday and on the second Thursday of each month. The officers presiding over the club for this term are Bradford Brightman, President; Seldon Connolly, Vice-President; Cleman Howes, Secretary; and Steve Mathewson, Treasurer. The Junior Hi-Y distinctly interests itself in the support of high ideals and the maintenance of high standards of student conduct. Those chosen for membership in the organization must have good scholastic standings and be of good character. MIMEOGRAPH CLUB The purpose of the Mimeograph Club is to give the members an opportunity to learn how to cut stencils and how to mimeograph them on the machine. Pupils also learn other details about this which are not brought up in the classroom. The meetings are held every Monday in room 240 at 2:00. Miss Cohen is the faculty adviser and Samuel Walder the instructor. The officers presiding this term are: President—Francis MacCawley Vice-President—Stefanie Stanek Secretary—Phyllis Grimes As yet the club is not recognized and so no credit is given. When it does become a recognized club, the members will learn how to do fancy work on the mimeograph. NEW BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL BAND The band of the N. B. H. S., is one of the oldest organizations in the school. Not only is it the oldest but it is a great asset to the New Bedford High School. The band plays at all of our football games, at most of our auditorium periods, and _ participates in all patriotic parades. 57 INZBe Se ONCEIiS REN The oldest organization in the high school is the orchestra which is under the direction of Clarence W. Arey. We have the pleasure of hearing the orchestra during our auditorium periods and also at outside organizations and concerts. The high school also has a second orchestra which is made up of less experienced players. These members receive instructions in preparation for entering the first orchestra. PHILOMATHEAN CEUB The Philomathean Club was organized for the purpose of promoting an interest in public speak- ing. The club is under the direction of Miss Blaisdell. The meetings are held on Mondays in Room 141 at 2:05 P. M. The presiding officers are: Presi- dent, Paul Murphy; Vice-President, Lena Blais; Secretary, Jean Pignone. Each member, in order to receive credit for the term, recites a poem, reads a story, or gives an account of some thing or experience. SLUDEN ET GOU na The Student Court aids the Traffic Squad in enforcing the rules of the school which are made by the Student Council and the principal. The Court consists of eight students who are appointed by the principal. The students take the positions of a chief justice who presides over the court; a prose- cuting attorney who presents the evidence for the school; a defense attorney who presents the de- fendants side of the story; and five associate justices who hear the case and pass judgment on it. This Student Court is maintained for the purpose of giving the students a fair trial whenever they receive tickets for disobeying rules. The sessions are held weekly and the penalty is usually in the form of a number of seventh periods. THE TRAFFIC SQUAD The Trafic Squad was organized for the purpose of maintaining order throughout the New Bedford High School. The squad consists of marshals, district chiefs, assistant chiefs and the chief. These offcers are made known by the badges that they wear on their arm. Henry Mickelson has been chief of the squad for the past two terms. 58 ulti spine —— yunuet - eet II be ie th “There is only one proof of ability—action.” Marie Ebner-Eschenbach ATHLETICS VARSITY SQUAD First row, left to right—Tsouprake, Hutchinson, Lemire, Sadowski, Riley, Mendell, Carlisle, Seaver, Pichette. NEW BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL-FOOTBALL, TEAM The New Bedford High School football team of 1939 has just finished a successful season despite the handicap of injuries incurred by several members of the squad. The three games which our team lost were to a fine Brockton team, a state champion contender; to Vocational, Bristol County and State Class C champions; and to a strong Cranston, Rhode Island team. The season was crowned by the placing of eight men on the three All-Bristol County teams, which is a tribute in itself. Eddie Riley, ace passer, and Charlie Tsouprake, the slashing defensive center, were honored by their selections for the first team. On the second team were placed Ronald Lemire, Carlton Mendell, Lucien Pichette, and Dick Seaver. Frank Sadowski and Ed Hutchinson were selected for the third team. With the two first-team tackles returning next year as a nucleus along with a group of fine reserves, the prospects for next fall are bright. Opp. N.B. Opp. N.B. BAokKE TRALEE At the beginning of the basketball season, everyone looked toward our team with rising hopes. The New Bedford High students wished that this team would bring more honor to the school than any other in the history of our institution. The 1938-39 basketball squad had five first string veterans from last year’s team. In spite of the fact that the team had an exceptionally hard schedule, it made an impressive showing by completing its regulation season with fourteen victories and only four defeats, and capturing New Bedford’s third straight Bristol County Cham- pionship. The team was defeated by Rogers, Cranston, Quincy, and Brockton. However, it de- feated all these teams in the return game with the exception of Cranston which played only one game with the Crimson quintet. Because of its excellent record, the team was invited to the fourteenth annual Massachusetts Institute of Technology Scholastic Basketball Tournament. Rated as the under-dog, the Crimson team defeated a powerful Peabody quintet in the first round and came back the next night with another outstanding triumph over the tournament favorite, Somerville. Although the boys lost in the finals to Lynn English, the New Bedford students ought well to be proud of their record. Even in defeat, the Crimson five gave one of the smoothest exhibitions of basketball and the finest display of sportsmanship of any competitor in the tournament. 64 Eddie Riley scores a basket at M. TRACK Four years ago track and field athletics were brought back to the New Bedford High School by Mr. James K. Donaghy. To produce consistent and strong track teams usually requires years of development. Mr. Donaghy has accomplished a remarkable feat in developing the track team as fast as he has. This winter the team completed the most successful indoor season in the history of the school. We feel certain that the team now has its most difficult years behind it, and we sincerely hope that the team will achieve many more successes under Coach Donaghy. This winter the track team defeated a strong Brockton High School team by a decisive score. It was the second time that a New Bedford High School team had ever beaten a Brockton High School track team. Our victory over Tabor Academy, on the “Middies’” broad track at Marion, was exceptionally brilliant in view that Tabor’s track team was one of the best preparatory school teams in the State. Although the New Bedford tracksters were defeated on our own track by the Worcester Commerce High School team, 1938 State Championships of Class B, they gave the Worcester boys a hard battle throughout the meet as the close score indicates. Coach Donaghy found some consistent point winners in Weinstein and Chapman in the dashes and the 300, Nute and Fonseca in the 600, Mendez in the 1000, and Hibbits in the high jump. The team found an enthusiastic supporter in Mrs. James K. Donaghy who attended all the meets. 66 We are proud of the fact that in these four short years Coach Donaghy has produced three State Champions, Warren Nute, Captain in 1938, in the 600; Jack Hibbits, Captain in 1939, in the high jump; and the team of John Chapman, Jordan Joslin, Warren Nute, and Gerson Wein- stein in the half-mile relay. But we are even more proud of the fact that on our track team you learn more than just how to run or to throw a weight. Whether or not you win, if you play fairly and try your best, you are tops with the coach, and that is why he is tops with us. Knowing that all pictures, no matter how vivid, fade with the years, we have included every photograph and every printed word that may arrest this process. If, several decades from now, when you leaf through the pages of this book you find that the brilliance of the dimming picture has been restored, only then shall we know our efforts have been crowned with success. THE LAST WORD by Norman LaRochelle Farewells have always been “the same old thing” A final clasp of hands . . . the moistened eye... The touching of those soulful, inner strings .. . The hollow emptiness that is goodbye. But we who've had our fun and played the game Can find no room for sorrow or regret, For there will be the ashes of our fame To smoulder in our minds . . . we won’t forget! They boarded the huge plane and took off on a four-year flight. The name of this air liner was “Class of June, 1940”. Our host for the first two years of this trip was Mr. G. Walter Williams, who retired from his post in 1938, when Mr. Allison R. Dorman succeeded him. Being freshmen, we were unable to fly without supervision and had as class advisor, Miss Mildred E. Gray. The officers of the class for this term were: President, Walter Maxfield; Vice President, Frederick Fish; Secretary, Louise Johnson; Treasurer, Jesse Teixeira. Represent- ing us in the Student Council we had Walter Maxfield, Marjorie Nich- olson, George Burgess, and Raymond O’Brien. During the term, a Freshmen Dance was held which proved to be successful. On this same occasion, a supper was also served but none of the cadets got “air sick”. At the end of this term, a few of our passengers failed the test flights and had to bail out, but most of the time it was smooth riding. Still riding high in the clouds at the beginning of our sophomore year in September, 1937, we elected as officers of the flight, President, Andrew Doyle; Vice President, Walter Maxfield; Secretary, Louise Johnson; Treasurer, Jesse Teixeira. As advisor on this trip we had Miss Anna Dorgan, who saw to it that nothing went wrong at the con- trols. This time Andrew Doyle, Phyllis Dunn, Elliot Marvell, Donald Talmadge, and George Burgess represented us in the Student Council. During this term, those who flew high enough to make Honor Society were Sylvia Cohen, Stevens Kosta, Ernest Marmaras, Elliot Mar- vell, Barbara Matthews, Pasqualina Morra, Pearl Rubin, and Estelle Shapiro. A presentation of “Stage Door” was enacted by the Dramatic Club during the spring of 1937 but only one of our cadets — Elaine Zeitz — showed her talents in that performance. Many of the rest of us were busy getting our wings with activities such as debating, dra- matics, R. O. T. C., and orchestra, and before we realized it, our sophomore term had disappeared. 52 Our junior year began with a new class advisor, Miss Mary E. Carroll. Our junior officers were President, Norman LaRochelle; Vice President, Paul Harwood; Secretary, Louise Johnson; Treasurer, Mar- garet Ramsbotham. We selected Norman LaRochelle, Margaret Har- rington, Phyllis Dunn, Ann Atchison, Esther Sher, and Elizabeth Janiak to represent us in the Student Council. This term the Honor Society filled rapidly with pupils who had shown willingness and eagerness to learn. Those making the grade were: Dorothy Alves, Hilda Amaral, Michel Antone, Laurette Brous- seau, Stanley Chaberek, Susan Collins, Rosetta Feingold, Phyllis Grime, Helen Hargraves, Kathryn Hoye, Raymond Knowles, Helen Kosinski, Lillian Maye, Charles Murray, Aileen Perkins, Henry Roszkiewicz, Frank Sobolewski, Mary Sylvia, Jesse Teixeira, Newton Teixeira, Mary Valladoa, George Velimesis, Constance York, and Marion Young. The Dramatic Club presented ‘320 College Avenue”. Those who participated and showed excellent acting ability were Joseph De Rocco and Arthur Rossiter. The “tuning-up” of the plane all during our four-year trip was done by members of the orchestra and band which included Phyllis Dunn, Mary Orcutt, Elliot Marvell, Amelia Salles, and Walter Maxfield. And then September 1939! A new adviser — Mr. Tripp! A new year — Senior — and plenty of excitement! The results of the election of officers were: President, Paul Harwood; Vice President, Stevens Kosta; Secretary, Anna Cohen; Treasurer, Margaret Ramsbotham. We chose Paul Harwood, Margaret Harrington, Phyllis Dunn, Mary Or- cutt, Ralph Braudy, Marjorie Cabral, and Nancy Cunha to represent us in the Student Council. The outstanding athletic feat of the year was performed by the basketball team which won the M. I. T. tournament, the first New Bedford High School team to accomplish this. Members of the class who had much to do with the success of the team were Ferdinand Sowa, Charles Tsouprake, Edwin Livramento, John Alves, and Edwin Fon- seca. A dinner was given in their honor and a plaque was presented to the High School. Gold basketballs and medals were awarded to the players. These boys also represented our school in the New England Basketball Tournament in Portland, Maine, the only team able to do this. 53 JUNE 1940 SENIORS Our great track stars were: one-half mile Champion of South Eastern Mass., “Bud” Mendes; high-jump champion, Jack Hibbits; the 220 yard Champion, “Red” Weinstein. Others on the track team were Raymond Janak, Ronnie Lemire, and Martin Walton. Our other sportsmen were: Football — Ronnie Lemire, Lucien Pichette, Eddie McGuire, Frank Sadowski, Charles Tsouprak, and Bud Hayes. Golf — Elliot Marvell and Joseph Connolly. Baseball — Teddy Nisson, Eddie McGuire, Bill Pell, Ches ter Travers, Frank Sadowski, Donald Mellor, and Ferdinand Sowa. Some of our classmates gave excellent service to the school on the student-controlled trafic squad. The Assistant Chiefs were Sidney Wainer and James Macedo. Deputy Chiefs were Joseph Curry, Paul Dubuc, James Malick, Rosalyn Goldstein, and Frank Cataen. Many of the “Boy Cadets” held offices in the R. O. T. C. They were Major Donald Talmadge; Captains Frank Chase, Harry Hancock, Stephen Gilmore, Donald Loomis, and Richard Price. First Lieutenants Frank Cataen, Mario Moutinho, and George Cobb. Second Lieutenants Bartlett Gardner, Alfred Sears, Lionel Hotte, Sidney Lees, Donald Gos- selin, Donato Sciscento, and Robert Nering. In the spring of our Senior year “June Mad” was given by the Dramatic Club. Daniel Lewis, Dorothy Lyons, Phyllis Dunn, Miriam Haney, Stevens Kosta, Norman LaRochelle, and Arthur Rossiter all showed exceptional brilliance in acting. Girls who were in the Girls’ Welfare League and gave their services whenever needed were: Anne Atchison, Dorothy Cardinal, Sylvia Cohen, Phyllis Dunn, Evelyn Eisenbach, Sally Gidley, Eva Green, Miriam Haney, Margaret Harrington, Constance Hayes, Shirley Holden, Kath- ryne Hoye, Elizabeth Janiak, Louise Johnson, Carolyne Kirby, Mary Kirk, Selma Manelis, Lillian Maye, Martha Miller, Kathleen Mooney, Aileen Perkins, Pearl Rubin, Amelia Salles, Kathleen Walsh, and Ruth Ward. On the Varsity Debating Team were Ralph Braudy, Paul Harwood, Sylvia Cohen, Pearl Rubin, and Manager Norman Provost. Out of fifteen debates, these people won eleven. Ralph Braudy won third place in extemporaneous State Championship and second in Barnstable ex- temporaneous speaking. Paul Harwood won second place in Barnstable 54 55 Original Declamation and second place in American Legion District Tournament. On April 10, we had our get-to-gether in the High School. Supper was served in the cafeteria and dancing was enjoyed afterwards in the Girls’ Gym. Various members of the class provided entertainment. “Red” Weinstein played the piano, Claire Dubois sang, and Victor Kuczewski played the accordian. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. It seemed that we just “soared” through our Senior year, for be- fore we knew it June 14, the date of our Prom was upon us. On June 17 we attended Alumni night, and June 18, our Banquet. No one will ever forget the good times that were had at these affairs. Our flight ended on June 20th and we arrived at the hangar of the New Bedford High School Finished Products Airlines, Inc. just in time to receive our diplomas for the fine work we had accomplished during the four-year trip. Many more happy landings — Class of June, 1940! ANNA COHEN, Secretary. C. affords to institutions a means of practical train- ing in organization, leadership, and discipline, which will be a value to their graduated students in an industrial or professional career. R. O. T. C. training at the New Bedford High School is voluntary and is confined to the upper three classes. The Unit is rated by the War Department as an Honor Unit. The R. O. T. C. unit is suffering a great loss this year with the retirement of Master Sergeant Osman. “Sarge” came to us in 1925; our Honor School ratings and Rifle Team successes since then are a tribute to his efficiency and leadership. The team is giving him a glorious send-off, winning the Corps Area Intercollegiate and Hearst Trophies this year. The instructors are Major G. Ross Rede, FA, DOL, PMS T and Sergeant George Osman, Inf., DEML. Lieutenant Seth Hudgins is in charge of the unit at the present time because of the illness of Major Rede. THE NEW BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM The New Bedford High School football team of 1939 has just finished a successful season despite the handicap of injuries incurred by several members of the squad. Frank Sadowski and Ed. Hutchinson were selected for the third team. Third row — Ernest Stasium, Manager; Edwin Livramento, Kenneth Clapp, Charles Ysouprake, Kenneth Wilkinson, Edward McGuire, Winston Dodge, Coach. SENIORS BASKETBALL The 1939-1940 basketball team started its season under a definite handicap. Only two regulars, Ferd Sowa and Al Palmeiri, were left of the brilliant team which went to the finals of the M. I. T. tourna- ment in Boston last year. This was farther than any other New Bed- ford High quintet had ever gone in the Tech tournament. Would this year’s team come any where near this record? The consensus of opin- ion was that it would not. But what happened? Starting off by beat- ing East Providence 33-27, the team gradually grew into the smooth- est-shooting, quickest-passing team in the history of the school. The climax of the regular season came with the overwhelming defeat of Vocational by a score of 53-30. This game clinched an invitation to the fifteenth annual tournament conducted by the Massachusetts In- stitute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. Although New Bedford had a fine record, the team was not fav- ored to go far in the tournament by the Boston newspaper scribes. After defeating Lawrence 50-23 in the opening game, however, and breaking the tournament all-time scoring mark in the process, New Bedford’s chances of winning the title were greatly enhanced. Haverhill 27, 53 Pawtucket 48 40 team then went out and defeated the highly touted Somerville team 30-25 to enter the final round. In the final, Haverhill was no match for the Crimson, who scored at will and set a new high-scoring mark for the tournament by garnering 53 points to Haverhill’s 27. Coach Dodge’s dreams had come true — an M. I. T. tournament champion- ship for New Bedford High School! The team received a bid to the New England tournament in Port- land, Maine because of the M. I. T. victory. The fact that Pawtucket defeated the Crimson machine in a hard fought match 48-40, in the first round in no way detracts from the glory won by the team. An unfortunate ankle injury to Al Palmeiri and the telling effects of a strenuous season had much to do with the defeat. Every Portland oficial commented on the gentlemanly behavior and sportsmanlike at- titude of the New Bedford boys — a compliment which offset the defeat. Coach Dodge and the students of New Bedford High School are very proud of this 1939-1940 basketball team which has set a mark for future Crimson quintets to shoot at. 79 JUNE 1940 First row, left to right — David Sullivan, Carl Smith, Leroy Faltus, William Reedy, Louis Gonsalves, William Pell. Second row — Ferdinand Sowa, Arthur Davidian, Albert Palmieri, Edward Wojcik, Chester Travers, Teddy Nisson, Donald Mellor, Eugene Oliviera. Third row — Raymond O’Leary, Asst. Coach; Edward McGuire, Francis Sadowski, Stanley Grabiec, Dante Balestracci, Ed- ward Koelher, Henry Trahan, Winston Dodge, Coach. BASEBALL The baseball team has made an auspicious start in its campaign for an undefeated season, by sweeping to victory in all of the games played to date. Defeats have been handed to Fairhaven, 5-1; Durfee, 4-0; Brockton, 1-0; and Rogers of Newport, 4-3. This year New Bedford has a veteran outfit. Eddie Wojcik is again behind the bat. Maurice Robillard, pitching ace of last season, is expected to shoulder most of the pitching burdens. Chet Travers returns to his shotstop berth, Al Palmeiri has been shifted from the outfield to first base, and Ted Nisson and Stan Grabiec at second and third respectively, round out a veteran infield. Balestracci, Sadowski, and Davidian patrol the outheld. With this outfit Coach Dodge has high hopes of winning the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference crown. SENIORS 80 First row, left to right — Charles Felix, Sidney Miller, Homer Benoit, Walter Gracia, Roland Dupre, John Crowell, Joseph Gracie, Walter Coe, Edgar Pineault, Al Deloid. Second row — Gilbert Siegal, Robert Bussey, Kenneth Knowles, Sidney Siegal, Nelson Jourdain, Gordon Nute, Ronald Lemire, Andrew Doyle, Gerson Weinstein, “Jack” Hibbits, Henry Hebert, Quentin Youngblood. Third row — Larry Chongarlides, Harry Booth, Luther Madison, William Powers, Rene Boutin, John Smith, Martin Walton, Bert Smith, Warren Mendez, Ray Janak, Joe Dias, Joseph Webster, David Saltus, James K. Donaghy, Coach. TRACK The track team under the able guidance of Coach Jim Donaghy, has piled up an enviable record for itself in the last few years. Much of the success of the team is due to the efforts of several members who graduate this June. Captain “Jack” Hibbits has been outstanding in every meet, scoring points in the high jump, broad jump, pole vault, and hurdles. ‘Red’? Weinstein is one of the best sprinters New Bed- tord High School has ever produced, having been unbeaten in the indoor season last winter. Warren “Bud” Mendez, whose specialty is the 1000 yard run, is another high scorer who will be lost to the team through graduation. Ronnie Lemire and Martin Walton in the weight events, Andy Doyle in the broad jump and hurdles, and Ray Janak in the dis- tance runs completes the list of seniors whose loss will be felt very keenly by Coach Donaghy. The high-light of the present outdoor season was the defeat of Everett and Brockton by the Crimson in a triangular meet. In this mee t “Jack” Hibbits took individual honors with 1614 points. The team won fourth place in the Northeastern Interscholastics, Worcester Interscholastics, and the Massachusetts State Meet. In the Seaboard relays, victories were scored in the one-lap and two-lap relays, and “Red” Weinstein won the special 300 yard invitation run. JUNE 1940 81 First row, left to right — Robert Herbst, Joseph Connolly, Chester Travers, Emerson Castino. Second row — Edward Anderson, Sumner Marvell, Coach; David Balestracci, E. Crawford. SENIORS GOLF TEAM The golf team appears to be well on its way to establishing an excellent record this year having won all matches to date. The team has defeated Dartmouth, 8% to 4; Barnstable, 6 to 3; Falmouth, 9 to 0; Vocational, 8 to 1; and the strong Brockton outfit, 5 to 4. Re- turn matches remain to be played with these teams to close the season. Members of the team are Joseph Connolly, Edward Anderson, Robert Herbst, Elliot Marvell, David Balestracci, Emerson Castino, Chester Travers, and John Crawford. Prospects for next year are not very bright as all players except Anderson, Herbst, and Crawford will be lost by graduation. 82 First row, left to right — William Maule, Michel Antone, George Izmirian, Carl F. W. Bergstrom, Coach. Second row — William Sullivan, Christo Pallas, Robert Lesco. Roland Charest, Kenneth Clapp, Edward Filipek. TENNIS TEAM The tennis team under the direction of Coach Bergstrom, is fast rounding into shape. It is too early at this time to make predictions with any certainty but it appears that the team is in for a good season. There are five letter men available from last year’s team as only one regular was lost by graduation. The team is capably lead by Captain Michel Antone. Ed Filipek, the number one man, is one of the finest young players ever to wield a racquet for New Bedford High School. He has defeated his opponent in every match in school competition to date. Other members of the squad are Robert Lesco, Ken Clapp, Christo Pallas, William Maule, Rudolphe Primeau, William Sullivan and Roland Charest. George Izmirian is the manager. Prospects for next year are especially bright as only one regular will be lost by graduation. The schedule this year includes matches with Rogers High of Newport, Pawtucket, New Bedford Textile School, Brockton, Attle- boro, Durfee, and Moses Brown. 83 JUNE 1940 SENIORS 84 IN APPRECIATION To Robert Brooks class of June 1941 for the inside cover sketch.
