Many events happened behind the scenes. The custodians, cooks, and bus drivers at NACHS always kept busy helping the students and faculty. The cooks kept busy preparing hot, nutritious meals while the lunch stand provided quick meals for students in a hurry. The custodians had many jobs, including cleaning the school and other maintenance jobs. The bus drivers made sure that the students got to and from school safely. The MAIN EVENTS for our foreign students was to We at NACHS are always happy to meet new people, but we were especially glad to welcome Yumiko Kashiwazaki, daughter of Susumu and Shigeko Kashiwazaki of Utsunomiya, Japan. Yumiko stayed with Tom and Shirley May of Lenzburg during her visit to the United States. Yumiko celebrated her 18th birthday in January. In Japan she would be attending Utsunoniuya Girls High School, a school of 1,200 students. Her father is employed as a senior engineer for Hitachi, Ltd. and her mother teaches calligraphy. Her younger brother, Manabu, is a high school student. Her most difficult adjustment to the United States was the speed of the conversational English, which she was supposed to understand. She gives credit to her Basic Grammar Class for helping her the most while she was enrolled to NACHS. In her spare time Yumiko likes to swim, do calligraphy, cook, read, arrange flowers, and do origami (paper-folding). In her country she won awards in calligraphy contests and belonged to the calligraphy club at her school. She was also a member of the swimming club. Yumiko credits herself with being a fast learner and is easy to get along with. Her future plans include returning to Japan to graduate from Japanese High School. She would like to go on to college and study more English. Yumiko offered this comment about the past year: I have enjoyed my stay in New Athens and my time at New Athens High School. 1 want to thank all of the students, teachers, and administrators who have helped me while I was here.
