Text from Pages 1 - 90 of the 1964 volume:

Dedication This is a letter written to a member of the Faculty of NACHS. It is written in honor of a person who has been a devoted English and Spanish Teacher, an encouraging play director, a helpful sponsor, and most important of all, an understanding person. We, the Students of NACHS, wish to express our deepest appreciation-to you, MISS DOROTHY HOUSE, by dedicating to you our 1964 Vespa. Thank you for taking an interest in each of us, and also for encouraging us when we have needed encouragement most. The Students of NACHS Board of Education George Wirth A. H. Schlestnger Loren Kolditz President Secretary Edmund Huber Alvin Kayson Harold Schneider Orville Vogler The School Board of NACHS constantly strives to improve our educational opportunities. They solve the many problems that occur during the school term. The members of the Board of Education get little recognition for their diligent work. We would like to say to all of you a very sincere THANK YOU. Administration B. W. Hunsaker, Superintendent The operation of NACHS revolves around these three persons: Mr. Hunsaker, Mr. Pieron, and Miss Dudeck. They are the stepping stones between the Board of Education and the students. We would like to offer a hearty “thank you” for a job well done. Marching Band The NACHS High School Band can now proudly hold their heads high, whether they are performing a- concert or marching in one of the many parades for which they are engaged. Here they are shown wearing the marching variation of their new uniforms. For many years, the band members have dreamed of having new uniforms, and now, thanks to the Commercial Club of New Athens, that dream has become a reality. The new white uniforms of the Jackettes and the Majorettes present a striking-contrast compared with the dark uniforms worn by the band members. The Jackettes - each wearing a letter of purple and gold - attractively announce the approach of the NACHS Band. Jn the band, there is a time to work, and a time to play — these are the moments of which... We are really proud of these Sweepstakes Trophies. Farewell to our old uniforms. This year, 1964, will be remembered by all NACHS band members as the year in which they acquired long-awaited new uniforms. They replaced the old uniforms which were bought in 1938, 26 years ago. A representative from De Moulin Brothers of Greenville, Illinois, measured each band member early in the school year. Later they turned in their old uniforms. At a banquet given by the Commercial Club, the general public eagerly waited. A trumpet fanfare announced the unveiling of the new uniforms and of the concert Which followed. This event marked one of the stepping stones in the history of the NACHS band. The members of the Band Council were elected by a majority vote of the band, and are responsible for drawing up bylaws which govern and judge the band members in cases of uniform neglect or absence from an important concert or contest. Also, daily band conduct is to be strictly enforced. The members of the student body areresponsiblefor the election of Student Council members. Two people from each class are chosen to serve for a one-year term, and each class president is automatically a member. The purpose of this council is to form a channel for communication between the student body and the faculty in all matters in which the school is involved. Junior-Senior The theme of the 1963 Prom was done in blue and white tissue flowers. Whew! What a lot of work, but it was worth it! We are Chianese, if you please. Prom On May 11, 1963, the Juniors and Seniors of NACHS, as well as their dates, boarded a slow boat bound for the Orient. Soon after the $}iip embarked, dancing was under way to the music of the Nu-Tones. Other entertainment was provided by the Chinese girls and their sailor friends, who added much to the general atmosphere of the prom. As we neared Hong Kong, the beautiful gardens and the panoramic view of the city itself was truly a spectacle to behold. At midnight, Dan Nuernberger and Carla Edwards became the reigning King and Queen of the 1963 Prom. The memory of this prom, as with any prom, remained long after the last strains of music had been carried away into the atmosphere, after the movie, the breakfast, and coming of the dawn. The climax of the evening - the coronation. The members of the royal court danced at midnight.
