The New Athens Community High School, which is located on the eastern edge of the village of New Athens, was established in 1920 and until the erection of the present building in 1931 was located in a portion of the grade school building. Professor Henry W. Krohn acted as the school’s principal from its inception until 1945. Since that time I larold Shields, R. A. Neal, Leo Cox and Don I). Schriner have served as administrators of the school. Despite attempts to abolish the school in its early years, it has grown steadily- The gymnasium was added to the present building in 1938, the cafeteria was added in 1952 and vocational departments were completed in 1953. In 1954 by approval of the voters, high school district 68 and grade school district 62 were united to form New Athens Community Unit District 60. Bain W. Hunsaker was appointed as superintendent of the system and grades seven and eight were moved to the high school building to form the junior high school. Thus, New Athens Community High School moves forward in its service to the youth of this community. 2

Mr. Bain W. Hunsokcr Mr. Bain W. Hunsaker Superintendent Bachelor of Science in Education, Southern Illinois University; Master of Arts in Education, Colorado State College of Education. On the shoulders of our superintendent, Mr. Bain YV. I lunsaker, rest the responsibili ties of carrying out the administrative duties of Unit District 60. This is his first year in this position which he so capably fills. I le is very active in civic affairs and takes a great deal of interest in the school social functions. I le deserves much of the credit for the smooth and efficient operation of the school system. Board of Education The Board of Education is a group of seven men elected by the citizens of Unit District 60. It is the duty of the Board to see that the operation of the school system is carried out. Although members of the Board of Education receive no recompense, they are very dedicated to their work in the field of education.
