Charles Ilenniger, Richard Riely, james Zeller. el I The Student Council of New Albany High School was first organized in 1943 with the purpose to act as the voice of the student body. One of its most prominent activities this past year was sponsoring the magazine drive. Through these sales a concert grand piano and an electric organ have been purchased for the school. Another on its list of activities was the informa- tion bureau established at the sectional basketball tournament to inform visiting schools of local restau- rants. In addition, the Student Council was respon-Y sible for the schoolls outdoor decorations at Christ- mas. Members of the Student Council, composed of one representative from each home room, met twice each month on XX7ednesday. Besides business, the club discussed ways of improving the appearance of the school and means by which the students might become better acquainted. 21 The Student Council Executive Board, made up of the four officers, the sponsors, two seniors, two juniors, one sophomore, and one freshman, met twice each month. At the executive meetings, various mem- bers' ideas for improving the school were presented and discussed. Each member of the Council made a report on projects discussed at the meetings to members of his home room. The students then gave their opinions of these new ideas, and in turn, the representative carried back the decision of his home room to the Council. The club's sponsors are Mrs. Jessie Beard Long and Mr. C. Gordon Raney. Officers for the year were: Joseph Burke, president, Paul Poff, vice-president, Paula Lewis, secretary, and Maryetta McMurray, treasurer.

Um .1 lflfffldfly Qmdaaea The Wfriters Club is anothcr of the New Albany Senior High School clubs to be organized, for the first time, just this year. The club has as its purpose the creation of better writing ability among those students interested in writing. Sponsored by Miss Naomi DI. Kirk, the club has its weekly meetings on Tuesday. During club meet- ings the different types of writing were discussed. These discussions included the various forms of poetry and prose. Wfriting form was also taught to the members of the club by Miss Kirk. Also, during club periods the students tried their skill at all types of writing, al- ternated with talks and discussions of famous writers and their different styles of writing. One of the club's activities was selling candy after school. ln this way, they finance.l their club projects. The XVriters Club offers not only the opportunity for enjoyment but also the means by which students can develop a life-long hobby. Also, through this club, students can be taught to appreciate good writ- ing even though they, themselves, may never become great writers. Requirements of the club are few. A student must be either a senior or a junior and must have a serious desire to learn more about writing.
