Honor Representatives to Girls' and Boys' Statei-Bob Neas, Janet Wray Joel Magruder Jim Haubein, Bill Snyder, and Ronnie Richmond. , Lion Bruce Smith Each year the American Legion sponsors an oratorical contest. Require- ments specify that the oi-ations must be original and about the Constitution of the United States. The winner in Vernon County this year was Joel Magruder. The local chapter of the D. A. R. presents a. medal for citizenship til a. girl and to a boy from the Senior Class. The winners from the 1953 cass were Joan Butler and Bob Neas. Joan was also selected to take the American History test which is given to contestants throughout the state. The winner of this statewide contest is given a one hundred dollar savings bond. The Federated Women's Clubs qProgress Club, Domestic Science Club and the Athenasj sponsor a student who is a representative to the Sophomore Pilgrimage in Jefferson City. '1'he representative for this year was Donna Lo an glue purpose of Boys' and Girls' States is to provide actual experience in citizenship and government. Organizations which sponsor this opportunity are: The American Legion, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Elks Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. The Nevada representative to the National Student Council Convention of 1952 was Bruce Smith. The convention was held in Evanston, Illinois. Other important awards which are presented after the ppblication of the NEVAMO are: the V. F. W. Award for Citizenship, the Elks Award for Leadership, the State Farmers Award and the N Leadership Award. In 1948 the Richardson Scholarship was established. This provides a five year scholarship to the University of Missouri, and is presented to a worthy member of the Senior Class by Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Richardson. This scholar- ship, which is presented in May, has been received by Betty Mische, Joan Weber, Doris McDowell, Carl Henman and Keith Waltz.
