Band Creates the Background The band performed for many differ- ent events. The first activity, marching at the Kansas State Fair, yielded a I rating for the sixth consecutive year. Fall activities began with an evening pep rally, the first one in many years, on the baseball diamond, and the band performed for pep rallies and football games. Other performances were marching in the Ness City Christmas parade, a Christmas concert, and playing at bas- ketball games. The band traveled to the Jetmore regional basketball tour- nament and to the Pratt sub-state bas- ketball tournament. The WKEA league contest was held at Ransom and the band received a II. The band received a I at the State con- test which was held at Garden City. Three ensembles also entered con- tests. District contest, rescheduled from March 28 because of a second blizzard in one week, was held at Hays on April 4. State contest was at Linds- borg and 34 gold metals were brought home. At the spring concert Joel Fitzgerald received the Most Outstanding Senior Band Member Award and the John Philip Sousa Award. League art contest was held in Quinter. Jason Slagle took first place in scratchboard and ink category. Darla Goodman merited second place in textile design. Teresa Cross took second place in oil. Kelly Gabel got third in sculpture and design. The group also traveled to Hays. Awards were given to Darla Goodman, Tere- sa Cross, and Matt Heckman. Special awards were given to ath- letes for each sport.
