Table of Contents NCHS 2 NCGS 62 FEATURING NCFIS People 3 Academics 21 Activities 30 Sports 49 NCHS Makes 1986-87 Appearance ‘‘Featuring! ...” Even though this word is used for movies, plays, and weekly television shows, this yearbook features Ness City High School faculty and students at work and at play. Events began on August 25, 1986, and finished on May 22, 1987, for the majority of these people. One change that occurred in the 85-86 school year was still in effect when school began this year. The junior high stu- dents and faculty again joined the high school students in Ness City High School. They headquartered in the vocational agricultural building, and some classes were held in the sci- ence sections of the main plant. A second change was the introduction of Daryl Olson as high school principal. Mr. Olson came to Ness City High School from Lakin High School where he was principal for nineteen years. Another change that was brought about was the school classification, going from 2A to 1A. Our students competed with students from different schools, as well as with those in the WKEA league. Our high school was the largest 1A school in Kansas this year with 76 students in grades 10 to 12. 1. Daryl Olson, principal 2. Linda Skinner computerizes the high school office records. 3. Story 3 Take Their Turn in the Spotlight During the 1986-1987 school year the seniors took their turn in the spotlight. The class of ’87 enjoyed special privileges such as getting senior keys, memory books, working as student aides for the teachers, prom, and graduation. Besides this, the seniors actively participated in school organizations, music, sports, the senior play, and other activities. In many ways the seniors were the stars of the school. Stuco was led by Mike Fiegel as president, Darla Goodman, vice-president, and Jodie DeShazo, secre- tary. Stuco is the government of the school; the voice of the students were senior representatives. As athletes, they provided leadership and encouragement to the underclassmen. The class set an example for the rest of the school to follow. As the commencement date drew near, the seniors looked forward to their last encore at Ness City High School. Mixed feelings were expressed about gradu- ation — a time in which the seniors can look back at the past and a time to look towards the future. Their big event of the year was buying their class rings, which were received the second week in No- vember. Many members were involved in FFA, FHA, Kayettes, Thespians, athletics, band and choir. The sophomores had a first this year — an evening of eating, dancing, and watching a movie in the school gym. They rented the movie, “Back to the Future,” and brought refreshments. Sponsors were Jerry Marshall and Michelle Graf. The class played a vital role in helping to cheer at ball games. Their year ended by serving at the prom. 1. Barbara Kerr does a typing assignment. 2. These thirty- three students had the distinction of being the largest class and, also, were the first in the school's history to be displaced by an unsafe building. The members did not let such a catastro- phe deter them; they eagerly and quickly foraged their ways as they be- gan their high school careers. Each student took at least four re- quired subjects and had the opportuni- ty of participating in all the different organizations and on athletic teams. The Board of Education brings their diverse knowledge and experience together to strive to maintain the highest possible standards of educa- tion for the school. Innumer- able hours were spent by the board members , as they con- centrated on meeting the chal- lenges of crowded classrooms and the constant pressures, local, state, and national, for more and better educational facilities. Undaunted by the setback of two defeats of the proposed bond issue, for a new grade school building, our adminis- tration continued to work dili- gently to meet each problem as it came, and to plan ahead for the best possible cirriculum that could be had under exist- ing conditions. The students appreciate their service and dedication. 1 School Board members- Front row- Gerald Eckels, Vice-President. Mary Grumbein, Ken- neth Schlegel Back row- Helen Floyd. Ernest E. McVicker. The storms of March 23 and March 27 crippled the community and can- celled the festival on March 27. Three plays were staged: “The Marriage” by Dorothy J. Proctor, Will the Ladies Please Come to Or- der? by Martha Norwood Gibson, and “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. The month-long setback was a trying time for the cast, stage crew, and Michelle Graf, the sponsor. The busy spring schedule made it dif- ficult to find practice time, and some practices were done during seventh hour. It was a relief to the group to finally perform the plays on April 24. 1. In the spring Beau Kraus was the winner of the best buns contest. On May 4 a potluck dinner for parents and the installation of officers was held. The final event was the “come as you are breakfast for the eighth grade girls on May 16. The members hosted the District F Fall Con- ference, October 16, 1986. Six members re- ceived their Junior Degrees: Kristina Schlegel, Teresa Copeland, Barbara Kerr, Sara James, Allison Stout and Gina Sutton. The program was highlighted by a panel from the Larned Youth Center, a style show, with garments fur- nished by Beeline and The New Ladies Choice, and skits or other numbers, which were pre- sented by the visiting chapters. F.F.A. 35 Directing the Set Stuco members began the year by attending a regional Student Council conference. They gained new ideas for and enthusiasm towards the job ahead. Their main objective was to encourage better attitudes and practices of citizenship. This was achieved by improving student teacher relationships and by repre- senting the students’ best interests. Surveys on organizing a S.A.D.D. (Students Against Drunk Driving) program and on student alcohol drug consumption were conducted. The annual football homecoming activities were entirely in the hands of the Student Coun- cil. Everything was planned from the crown bearers to the band performers, from the cars and flowers to the dance decorations. One popular gathering place in the school is around the pop machine in the south hall. This is Stuco’s main money-raising effort. The mem- bers keep the pop machine filled at all times. Proceeds from the pop machine and the air- band contest go towards student scholarships. Each year a deserving senior boy and girl are awarded a scholarship. 1. Parties were mother-member, fa- ther-member, secret pal, and Christmas deco- rating. They also had Mr. and Miss Irresistible Contests, sold dessert at a basketball game, and made a calendar each month for the north hall bulletin board. In October, the board members attended a regional conference at Fowler. Lisa Oberley, Area V Kay Kayette regional president and moderator for the conference, spoke about teen goalsetting. Claire Casselman, state director, was the keynote speaker for an all-school assembly. She spoke on self-motivation. Installation of the 1987-88 officers was con- ducted at the Parent-Member meeting. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goodman were awarded a plaque for their 26 years of contributions to the Kay Kayette program. 38 Kays Kayettes Behind the Scenes The yearbook staff was comprised of six students and two advisers, Yvonne Gantz and Jerry Marshall. They were in charge of spirit weeks, pep pals, and basketball homecoming. Spirit week is a biannual occurrence designated to generate spirit during the homecoming weeks. During the week of football homecoming, the stu- dent body, as well as the faculty, wore the type of dress designated for each day of the special week. During the week of basketball homecom- ing, each class had a certain hall to decorate. At the end of the week, faculty members selected the seniors as the class with the best-decorated hall. Another activity of the pep club is pep pals. The athletes’ pals, members of the pep club, gave them goodies to munch and or clues. Identities are then revealed with a cake or cookies. Spirit week winds down with the homecoming ceremony held between the girls and boys games. After the game, pep club members furnished re- freshments for a dance. D.J. Track 61 a ra ±11111 tea 11 All I IM : NCGS mu nJ7 Scene Has Been and Will be Changed Mr. Anthony Deane, former principal of the Holy Family Parochial School in Denver, Colorado, replaced William F. Janssen as Ness City Elementary School administrator when Mr. Janssen retired at the end of June, 1986. Mr. Janssen had been employed by U.S.D. No. 303 for twenty-three years, coming to Ness City in 1963 to be the high school principal and transferring to the elementary principal’s position in 1966. Mr. Janssen also served as treasurer of the Board of Education. Mr. Deane joined in the concern about the demolition of the red brick elementary building and the construc- tion of a new building, since a monumental decision had been made on February 7, 1986 to permanently vacate the 64 year-old grade school building. This decision was based upon the fact that structural defects could cause the building to collapse. The teachers and students were subsequently relocated in other school district buildings. To relieve the over-crowded classroom situation in the elementary school building, the Board of Education proposed to demolish the existing structure and replace it with a new addition on the same site. Three separate elections were held for passage of the school bond issue. On October 21, 1986 the U.S.D. No. 303 Board of Education held a community meeting for the purpose of giving information and answering questions relative to replacing the condemned three-story elementary school building. The first election held on November 4, 1986, proposed a $2,000,000 bond issue for a new building. This proposal was soundly defeated 755 to 452. A second election was held on February 3, 1987 at which time the proposed amount of the bonds were not to exceed $1,475,000. The proposed plan included only classrooms and a library whereby over 6,000 square feet were eliminated from the initial proposal. The issue was defeated again by a vote of 464-455. The third election for the school bond issue was held on April 7, 1987, which passed by 32 votes, 504-472. A special board meeting was held on April 9, 1987 to discuss building plans pursuant to the outcome of the election. The board established the following tentative time schedule for the building project: Specifications for relocating the boiler room and de- molishing the existing three-story brick structure were developed and submitted to contractors for the pur- pose of receiving bids during the week of May 18, 1987; The projected date for the sale of bonds in the amount of $1,375,000 was set for June 1, 1987; The tentative date for letting bids for constructing the new addition was set for late June or early July, 1987; The board is contemplating moving into the new facility at the begin- ning of the 1988-89 school year. Diana Harmison, secretary of Ness City Ele- mentary School. Anthony Deane, principal of Ness City Elemen- tary School.
