Halley's Comet made its passage around the sun and around the earth after 76 years. Ness City Eagles made their marks in 180 days, studying or playing from August 26,1985, to May 23, 1986. The Comet, frozen particles of dust and gas, is a member of the solar sys- tem. Ness City High School, 108 strong, is a member of the WKEA league, and Ness City Grade School, 261, is a member of Qua-Valley. Four hundred forty-six people comprise USD No. 303, Ness County School District. The Comet and the Eagle are unique. Both are reoccurring — the Comet in 2062, the Eagle in 1987. 2 People familiar faces at A1 CMS 3row 8:00 to 4:00, Monday through driday, August to May Page 2-1. One class member, Grete KvaLo, a foreign exchange student from Bergen, Norway, was hosted by Warren and Mary Lou Hall, Ness City. The seniors were sponsored by Bob Vavricka. They were led by Rob Clouston, President; Traci Winter, Vice-President; Justina Johnson, Secretary Treasurer; and Sean Ries, Stuco Representative. Since this is the year of the comet, some seniors were asked, What does it mean to be graduating in the year of Halley's Comet? Re- plies were People will remember the year of 1986; it will be special, and I'll enjoy looking back at it. ... It makes us feel like the stars of the school. ... It is special, because people will remember our class when they look back at 1986. Grete explained the differences be- tween American and Norwegian schools — The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 1:50 p.m. We have six hours; each is 45 minutes long, with ten-minute breaks be- tween classes that are on a rotation schedule from Monday to Friday. Lunch period is forty minutes and students may go to a store, bring lunch, or buy milk or yogurt, be- cause there is no cafeteria. A stu- dent goes to high school for three years before going to college. Let- ters are used for grading in the high school: S=A, M = B, G=C, NG=D, LG = F and numbers 5 to 1 are used for college grades. As the school year ended, the sen- iors were excited about graduation. Commencement was a happy, but sad occasion, because each senior would be going his or her separate way. Every senior had plans to go to college or to work, or as in Grete's case, she was planning to resume her second year of her col- lege education. Darin E. Robinson Penny Jo Wise Curtis D. The Board of Education and the administration made a deci- sion to evacuate the sixty-four year old red brick building because of its unsafe struc- ture. Junior high students began attending classes in the high school buildings, and the stu- dents in grades 1 to 6 began attending classes in the ele- mentary building's east wing. The kindergarten students were in the Methodist Church basement until April 7, 1986, when they moved into the north end of the administra- tion building. The library moved into the gym of the elementary school on April 2, 1986. Superintendent Terry Karlin said, Obviously we re con- sidering rebuilding the build- ing. But with the depressed agricultural climate and the decreased oil prices, this is hardly the time to submit a bond election vote to the pa- trons of the district; however, we cannot continue to operate as we presently are. It highlights the activities at the end of the year and its memories remain for years. The juniors put in many, long hours of work and made many decisions to prepare for the big event. April 26, 1986 was the day the planning and ideas came together. Lavender, purple, and pink were chosen as the colors to decorate the American Le- gion Building. The prom servers, selected by the junior class, served the meal of filet steaks, baked potatoes, corn, rolls, and cheesecake. After the banquet there was a dance with music by Metro D.J.'s. It's a happy time in which we can look back to see all of our accomplishments that have brought us here today. However, today is also a sad time for us, because we know that it may be the last time we are all together as a class. Although we may not be together much in the future. I'm sure that none of us will forget all of the good, the sad, the trying, the embarrassing, and even the disappointing time ' that we've shared throughout the past 12 years. Throughout our lives, we have experienced many different situations, and up until now. we have relied on the judgment of our parents. From this point on, decision-making will be more our responsibility. There- fore, it is important that we remember the lessons we have learned in the past years and use them to guide us in the right direction, because our lives will be shaped by the choices that we make. There is one last point that I'd like to leave you with, and that is: Life isn t all good times as we might wish it to be, but all of us will have to face many tiials and disappointments as well. But how we handle disappointments — how we deal with the stresses of life and its result- ing conflict — will be one of the most important measures of the success of our education Justina Johnson 1. Justina Johnson 2. Tresaftifmes Good afternoon. On behalf of the senior class of 198o, I would like to thank all of you for coming here todav to help us celebrate the end ot 13 years of school. In that time you, parents, teachers, triends, and rela- tives, have watched us grow from small children into young adults. Yet, it you had only watched, today would not have the meaning that it does. You would only be watching identical products pass bv on an assembly line. As it is, you arc watching individual graduates, for each one of you has added something different to our lives. You have taught us how to think, shown us how to act, cheered at our accomplishments, and supported us in our setbacks. Through these things and our own experiences, we have become individual persons with our own ideas and ways of doing things. m Today will probably be the last time all ot us will be together as a class. The time draws near when, like the kindergarteners we all were 13 years ago who let go of our mothers' hands on the first day of school, we must let go again and enter the real world. We are as ready now as we will ever get. We have been prepared for this knowledge and judgment that we have been given at our disposal. We will travel our separate ways, making our own choices and decisions based on what we have learned. Some of us will go to college others plan lo get a job or eiiler the military, and few will start families of their own. A ' No one can say for sure what the future holds in store for us If we work hard and use our heads, we can only hope that we will be suraKsful. We will make mistakes along the way. Hopefully, we will learn from them as we add them to our lists of experiences We will also reach new goals, such as earning the good grade, or getting the desired job of promotion. These will give us a setose of pride and accomplishment and will inspire us to set even higher goals. The future, for each one of us, is an unfinished story in which a new chapter is written each day The characters and Backgrounds have been set, yet what happens to them remains unseen It is up to us, the senior class of l98o, to fill the book with chapters of success, of overcoming obstacles and meeting challenges; with chapter? of making new friends and of staying in touch with old on with chapters of dreaming of the future and reminiscing of the past, and. most impfortantly, to fill it with chapters of happiness wherever we may he — Jason Karlin 3.
