There have been just as many firsts this year to off-set all the lasts, though: the first time we were being looked to as leaders of our school, the first time our classmates were homecoming candidates, the first time we really had to start thinking seriously of our futures, the first time we had to sit through those long ACT tests, the first time we had to wade through the mess of scholarship and grant applications, the first time we had to make a big decision as to what we would do with our lives, and the first time we had to really think and decide on our own what we would do. If one word were used to describe the state of mind of the senior class a few months ago, that word would have to be ' 'confusion.'' We were con- fused as to what we wanted, where we were going, what was up ahead. To use one word now, I would choose ' 'excited.'' We have decided if we are going to college, and where, and for some, a career choice, and for the others, an open mind to make that decision in the near future. Now, all we have to do is try out those decisions; make sure they were right for each of us. We are anxious to be on our own, making our own way, and the only word to describe that is ' 'excited.'' Fellow graduates, we have the rest of our lives ahead of us to do with as we will. It won't always be easy or fun, but we must hang right in there and keep reaching for the best. When the going gets rought and you feel like giving in to whatever problems or pressures you are surrounded by, please take a few moments and think of one very special classmate. Re- member Kristi Meyeres and all she has been through. Think of the courage and determination she and her family have shown and the achievements that have come from that courage. Then look again at your own problems and how much smaller they are in comparison. Use Kristi as an example and summon the courage needed to strive ahead. We began this year as a class, and through the year we have grown to- gether and became much closer as we realized it was almost over; gradu- ation was soon approaching. Now, graduation is here. We leave tonight, not as a class, but as individuals. As we go our separate ways, we will no longer be part of a class effort. From now on, our accomplishments are our alone, not to be shared with the rest of our class. Fellow graduates, we are soon to be the leaders of our families, commu- nities , and, yes, even our nation and world. As we start toward these goals, let us determine to make the most of each opportunity; to be the very best we can be ! Classmates, Parents, Guests, Faculty, and Administration. Welcome to the commencement exercises of the Senior Class of 1978. For the seniors graduating tonight, this is a proud moment. It is also one of achievement and promise. We can only realize at this time, as we start out on our own, how we ap- preciate the help we received through our school years. We were given an excellent school system in which to learn. We were aided by caring faculty and administration, and supported by our community. And behind all of this, the most important of all, understanding parents. Your presence here demonstrates that you care. Even though you may have attended many graduation ceremonies such as this, your presence here tonight to share our great joy, makes it even more special for us. As we look back, may the respect each of you had for us be instilled as respect for ourselves. May our tomorrow hold in store a world of happiness and more. May our dreams come true and life's best come to each of us. For this, we thank each and every one of you. VALEDICTORIAN - SALUTATORIAN 60 FOOTBALL 1978 Back row: Coach Myers, Coach Horsch, M.
