TUB NBCQ QTYBAGLB The 1976-77 Yearbook Staff would like to dedi- cate their yearbook to Mrs. Helen Floyd. Mrs. Floyd is retiring at the end of this year. This retirement completes a total of twenty-six years in the teaching profession in the state of Kansas alone. Nineteen of those years have been at Ness City where she has compiled one of the best libraries in the state. We wish to thank Mrs. Floyd for the continued effort she has put forth over all these years and for always being here when we needed her. We also want to say Good Luck and may you continue to grow and expand your mind as you have always told us to do in the past. We hope she will miss us as we will certainly miss the little pitter-patter that indicated she was near. 1976-77 Table of Contents 2 - Administration 4 - Seniors 14 - Juniors 17 - Sophomores 19 - Freshmen 22 - School Life 24 - Faculty 26 - High School Maintenance 28 - Jr. -Sr. Banquet 29 - National Honor Society 30 - Student Council 31 - Pep Club 32 - Cheerleaders 34 - FFA 36 - FHA 38 - Kayettes 40 - Thespians 42 - Yearbook 44 - Music 48 - N Club 50 - Football 54 - Basketball 60 - Golf 61 - Tennis 65 - Track 69 - Jr. High 75 - Fifth and Sixth 78 - Grade School 82 - Special Education 83 - Elementary Maintenance 86 - Graduation 88 - Senior Statistics 91 - Valedictorian 92 - Salutatorian 93 - Alumni Piovides £af)fxvt6 omL QwujuOM With the Board of Education as a foundation, the administra- tion attempts to offer to the patrons an education that is full, rich, and rewarding. Kristi lapsed into a coma after under- going brain surgery on July 26, 1976. Many, many long weeks went by with little or no change, but the Junior class members never gave up. They made a huge Christmas card and ban- ners for her. They sent momentos and visitors often to let her know they were behind her. Finally. Kristi is back in Ness City. Although she still has made no indication that she recognizes any- one . she is better and the entire school and staff joins the Junior class in con- tinued faith and hope that she will soon recover. Below are some classes that Juniors usually take, from the upper left-hand picture, clockwise, we see Mr. Vavricka helping Cindy Wiens with her project; Mrs. McLeish watches as the Junior girls create their latest fashions: Mrs. Floyd and Miss Herron help the Research class find what they are looking for; Mr. Reid lectures to the Government class about their rights. 16 6. 1. The girls sit on the register visiting before first hour begins. Every once in a while, the student body is alarmed by our fire alarm. Between classes, students stop by lockers for books. The impatient, hungry bunch shove to be first in line. Finally, the moment everyone's been waiting for - Food!! Anything can happen in southhall. Karen seems to always have visitor's during noon hour. Noon hour break and Mrs. McLeish is on hall duty to direct students down to south hall. Students wait their turn at the drinking fountain. Mrs. Hildegard Tittel, Mrs. Ramona McDonald and Mrs. Viola Wolfe are the student maintenance crew at the high school. They prepare many nutritious and taste-tempting meals that the students and faculty greatly appreciate. Mr. Jerry Schuler, Mr. Dave Barrett, and Mr. Verlin Schuler are the janitors for the high school. In addition to spending their days cleaning up after the students, they too are required to attend the many activities scheduled in the evening and maintain the opera- tions so they run smoothly. 26 ' Xsflj Ui PojvOjjj ti ’ tu MfiSS Oty Decorating the American Legion was a larger challenge than the cafeteria has been in years past. Only soph- omores. juniors, and seniors are eligible for membership. A spring introduction service is held each year. Students are nominated to mem- bership by the faculty. A grade point of 3.3 out of 4.0 is necessary for further consideration. Upon nomination and having the required grade point average, the student is evaluated by the faculty to see if they feel the student has the qualities that National Honor Society exempli- fies. A composite average of at least 3.3 must be maintained in order to remain in the organization. Pictured to the left are Cindy Wiens. Laura Briand, Sec.-Treas. Tim Gerken, Sponsor. This year the Student Council headed by Warren Stecklein, Tim Wasinger, Laura Briand, and Tim Gerken, Sponsor, asked each organization to submit their consti- tutions so that Student Council could evaluate each group to see if they were actually performing the functions they were supposed to be performing. This investigation brought about at least one change in the organizations, as N-Club can verify. Student Council also per- formed their usual duties, such as keeping the activity board up to date as Warren Stecklein and Norma Sutton are shown doing on the above right, and keeping the pop and candy machines filled for the students, as Tim Wasinger and Mr. Gerken are shown doing on the imme- diate right. Verlinda, Tammy, and Diane's enthusiasm go? Oh, it's just a skit where the girls pretend to be indifferent. The squad performed many skits during the season. Gosh, it looks like Kim P. , Kim A., Annette M. , and Tammy W. are really having problems! How did they ever get into this predicament? With a little help from their friends maybe? Pep Club had many interesting skits and ideas during the year. One of these was the football rally held out at the fairgrounds. Students and many, many townspeople braved the mud to bash the car, bum the dummy, and get the season off to a spirited start! ! Football and basket- ball games alike were filled with cheers and encouragement provided by the girls in pep club. 31 R oiboMCkmh In years past, the girls who were elected cheerleaders served the entire year. This year, we elected a set of cheerleaders for football season and another set for bas- ketball season. This was done so that those girls who wanted to play girls’ basketball in the spring could also be cheerleaders for at least pan of the year. These girls are making a Christmas card for Kristi Meyers. Ann Cashier won Miss FHA in the District. To start the year off, the forty member organization held a watermelon feed for all the students. The following month brought on a homemade ice cream party. Other activities were FFA-FHA party, a Valentine party, district elections and the district conference was held in Ness. The mosi interesting night was the FHA'ers Daddy Date party. The fathers entertained the girls by finding out who had the sexiest legs, largest nose, and other contests. In April, the advisors, Mrs. Horchem and Mrs. McLeish, the chapter mothers, Mrs. Barb Radke and Mrs. Doris Gabel, and eleven student members attended the State Meeting in Topeka. The final event was the Mother-Daughter installation Dinner in May. It was another busy year for FHA'ers. 37 Kayettes is a vital part of the school life at Ness City High School. They are a service organization, but they also have time to have fun. Kayettes got off to a great start this year by having a banana split party to recruit new members. A fruit theme was used for the membership drive and the effort paid off because they ended up with 53 members, shown in the upper right hand corner. The Kayettes are always busy carrying out many various projects. This year they had a Mother-Daughter Party, a Father-Daughter Party, and a Christmas Party where they wrapped gifts to send to the needy children. They helped with the Broom sale for the blind and are shown getting ready for a Cerebral Palsy Drive in the lower right hand corner. During the annual Kayette week they helped the custodians, painted the Eagle (lower middle picture), and sold strips of a paper chain to raise money for CARE, (upper left hand corner). The drill team performs at many of the home games. The purpose of having a choir in the high school curriculum is to offer the students a chance to experience the enjoyment of music. It also gives the student who may not be expecially adept in sports or a top student scho- lastically a chance to be recognized at another level. It can also give him her a sense of accomplishment and of doing something worthwhile. If a person likes music and likes to sing, being in a group of people who feel as he does, can give him a sense of comradeship with his fellow classmates rather than a feeling of having to compete, as may be true with other classes. 44 Mess ate, BomkI CMrf'icd s Ctxccessjuit Y U NESS CITY HIGH SCHOOL BAND, (left to right) FRONT ROW: L. This factor offered more action and excitement plus testing the nerves of the players. In tournament play, the squad was able to finish third at the Oberlin Tournament. At this tournament two Eagle players were picked for the all-tournament squad. These members were Larry Kraft and Shell Faulkender. The girls did a fine job in their competition against the other teams. Although the girls' record was a bit of a let down for the girls, they gained much valuable experience that could be used in next year's competi- tion. Following is a copy of her speech. Tonight, for the Senior Class of 1977, is a very serious occasion. We realize that we will never again be all together, and perhaps some of us will not see each other again after tonight. We are aware of the fact that we have reached a time in our lives when we will be making decisions about our future plans. Some of us will be going on to college, others will be finding jobs, but the security we have known in high school will soon be gone forever. We look upon these days ahead with a little fear, but we are prepared. Our teachers have given us the best possi- ble education, our friends have offered us encour- agement, and our parents have always been by our sides to guide us, to support us, and to show us the right way to go. We are grateful. In the years to come, we hope you will be able to share with pride in the joy of our successes. While looking in awe at what the future may bring, we are also remembering the years we have shared together as a class. For four years we walked the halls together before school, we sat through sometimes very long classes, we stood through end- less lunch lines, and we studied for many tests. We have participated in sports or we have been specta- tors, but together we have shared the agony of defeat - the glory of winning. We have joined organizations and taken our turn at being leaders. We have played in the band, and only a short time ago we were watching other seniors graduate while playing the bars of Pomp and Circumstance, and we thought our own graduation was a lifetime way. As we leave tonight for the last time we will be taking part of NCHS with us, a part we will always cherish in memories; and we will be leaving a part of ourselves behind! Thank You!!! S jSutotcvuaw fs SctucLj R uie tfc Sandy Reinert, the lucky achiever in the close race for salutatorian of 1977, saluted'' and expressed gratitude to all those people that contributed and made possible the graduation of each and every member of the class of 1977. Her speech follows. Welcome to the commencement exercises of the Senior class of 1977. For the fifty-six graduating seniors, tonight is one of the proudest and most anticipated moments of our lives. In a short time, we will be leaving here, not as a class, but as indi- viduals, to make our contribution to the world in which we live. But for one last night, we are still a class. We can look back to the four years of work and study that have prepared us for this night. We remember the encouragement and guidance that was given to us by our parents and our teachers. With each step that we took, we realized that someone cared enough to give us that encouragement and guidance. Because you cared, we now have the opportunity to be graduating here tonight. Because you have been successful in your lives, we now have the chance to be successful in ours. After tonight, we will all go our separate ways to accomplish goals that have been set during the past four years. We leave this school wiser and more experienced, and yet, afraid. Our generation must face many problems, and each one of us will con- tribute in our own special way to solve these prob- lems. We, the Senior Class of 1977, are proud to be graduating here tonight, and proud to have been cit- izens of this community. In growing, we have shared. In learning, we have found friendship. More of a smiler and less of a whiner. Just a bit quicker to stretch out my hand Helping another who's struggling to stand, This 1 would like to be - just a bit fairer, Just a bit better, and just a bit squarer Not quite so ready to censure and blame, Quicker to help every man in the game. This I would like to be - just a bit truer, Less of the wisher and more of the doer, Broader and bigger, more willing to give, Living and helping my neighbor to live! Edgar A. Guest 96 V
