Continues Winning Tradition On August 10, 1972, projects were entered in the Ness County Fair. Fifteen blue ribbons were received in addition to Lance Strum s Reserve Grand Champion for his picnic table, and Eldon Pfannenstiel's Grand Champion for his loading chute. Officers for the year were Eldon Fehrenbach, Pres.; Brad Slagle, Vice-Pres.; Craig Goodman, Treas.; Craig Horchem, Sent.; Dave Reinert, Rep.; Kevin FranK, Stuco. These officers attended the Southwest District Officers Leadership School at Dodge City and placed in the silver division in the overall contest. On October 11, the first Scott City Land Judging Contest was held. Ness City placed seven of the top ten and the high honors went to Roger Goodman, Jonn Robinson, and Tom Frusher. The Southwest District Land Judging Contest was held at Garden City. Again, the local boys placed seven of the top 10 witn Kevin Stout receiving the first place medal. In both contests Ness City had the top teams. For the first time this year, the Greenhand Day was held in conjunction with the Leadership School. All freshman members participated in all kinds of games and were informed of FFF procedures. A new phase of Land Judging was also added this year- Homesite Evaluation. In Homesite, charac- teristics of the land are judged for the preparation of a home and lawn. Honors were again received with Steve Misner, Tom Frusher, and Roger Goodman placing first, second, and third, respectively. Dodge City hosted the Entomology, Crops, and Poultry Contests for the second year. In Entomology, there was a four-way tie for first - all Ness City boys. After the playoff. Mike Pavlu claimed the first place medal; Jim Seib, the second place medal; Rory Ans- paugh the third place medal; and Steven Goodman, the fourth place certificate. Nearly every entrant placed higher than the best from any other school. In the Crops Contest, Lance Stum placed first, Gary Gantz. second; and Eldon Pfannenstiel, third. Not only did Ness have the top team but they defeated the second place team by a margin of over 1000 points. In the Poultry Contest Ness placed six of the top ten with Eldon Pfannenstiel receiving the third place medal Gary Gantz the fourth ana Jerry Roane, sixth, in addition to placing the top team. On March 2, the Southwest District Ag. Mechanics Contest was attended at Dodge City. The team placed second. Five fields were covered and Ness boys placed in the top five in each event. In Ag. Mechanics Skills, Marc Stum placed fourth; Jonn Robinson, fifth; In Electric Power, Dave Mellies, third, Lance Stum, fifth; In Soil and Water Management, Craig Horchem, fourth, and Allan Leikam and John Robinson tied for fifth; In Farm Power and Machinery, Kevin Stout, fourth; In Structures and Environment, Craig Horchem, fourth and Tom Frusher, fifth. On March 11, the boys attended the Garden City Livestock Judging Contest. In Dairy Judging, the team placed fourth; in Livestock Judging, ninth, with Marc Stum being the high individual. 26
