gHOMQQHiei FIGHTING EAGLES? THE 1973 EAGLE NESS CITY HIGH SCHOOL Ness City, Kansas Images Keeping communication lines open from the community through the high school is just one problem accepted by Superintendent Lyle C. Goff. As head of one of the biggest businesses in Ness City, he works with his principals, Dallas Wilhelm and William Janssen. They, in turn, are aided by their secretaries, Mrs. Joy Antenen and Mrs. Dee Stenzel. Another teacher aide this year is Karen Depperschmidt, who also substitutes in the secretary role. Overall, the guiding force behind the U.S.D. 303 school system is the board, composed of Wayne Stiawalt, Ralph Pfannenstiel, Carl Reinert, Raymond Lamoree, Clerk, Aylene Seaton; Supt. Goff; Board President, Clarence Wolfe; Member- at-Large, Harry Linn. 2 Probably one of the most permanent images of Ness High will be the faculty cheering at the pep assemblies. She has been president or a very active member of many organi- zations and extra-curricular activities in her high school career. One of her main interests has been in the speech field and she has pursued this even through her 4-H work, another field in which she has also excelled. She was particularly active in drama and received the Best Thespian of the Year Award. Probably Marlene's other major interest was music. She was a member of band for four years and also a member of the select Selgae Singers. In addition to speech and music groups, she was a member of Kayettes, Pep Club, National Honor Society, and the Yearbook Staff. Her time, effort, and academic ability were well rewarded at the end of the year when she was presented with the Reader's Digest Award, the Purina Award, the Betty Crocker Award, and the State of Kansas Scholarship Program Award. Marlene will attend Kansas State Uni- versity. Senior Mary E. Kanaga National Honor Society Grant Craig Horchem Purina Award 18 Salutatorian Patricia Stenzel Patti Stenzel, salutatorian of the Class of '73, has always been a competitor and an achiever. Whatever was going on at the school or in the community, she was an enthusiastic supporter. Her major interests have been the active activities. As a girl scout, she relished the cook-outs and camp-outs; for years she was instructor and lifeguard at the city pool; and she excelled in high school sports, both as a fan and as a par- ticipant. Her vivaciousness as a cheer- leader was one of the greatest spirit boosters, and last year she took fourth in the state in high school tennis. But Patti's interests and capabilities have not stopped with sports. She was a Kayette, a STUCO member, and the editor of the yearbook. She belonged to the National Honor Society and the Thespians. She was also active in music - marching band, pep band, stage band, and band council president. Patti received the Student Council Scholarship, the State of Kansas Scholar- ship Award and will attend Kansas State University. Our Miss Brooks Our Miss Brooks presented by the Senior Class is a play about a high school English teacher, who tries to please the school board and adminis- tration while trying to do her job in the classroom and produce a play. Kayettes Excel in Service The N. C. H. S. Kayettes started off the year with their Love is ... theme. They greeted the teachers with a skit and pencil holders and the girls who had attended camp told the other girls about their camp adventures at their Membership Party. Conference work dominated the first few weeks of Kayette activities and then the girls really became busy with their many worthwhile and interesting pro- jects for the school and community. These included: drives for Cerebral Palsy and Meals for Millions; concessions and coat checks at ball games; selling of spook” insurance; baby-sitting for PTA; All- school party; individual committee suppers and meetings with the Board. Indian tribe names were chosen for the committee, and pow- wows went on continually. 22 LUANN HAAS Kayette of the Year We Are Tomorrow. . .' This year the Ness City High Kayettes were hosts for the Regional Conference. Miss Wanda Kay Vinson, KAY Director, KSHAA, met with the Board about plans for the Conference and ex- plained what would be expected of each of the committees in charge of arrangements. Soon everyone was caught up” in the excitement of the coming events. The theme of the Conference was We Are Tomorrow. Dynamic James Jeffrey, Overland Park, immediate past executive director of the National Fellowship of Christian Athletes, gave a memorable speech at the closing general session. Witches and goblins prevailed at the evening's banquet. Mrs. Floyd, sponsor, Miss Vinson and Mr. Akins of the KHSAA, coordinate final conference plans. 23 The KAYETTE BOARD sets a good example by getting the concessions ready for the surge by the ball fans. A workshop was attended at Hayes and then two cookouts were utilized to get the book organized and going. Later in the year, evening meetings were held with sack lunches being the suggested fare. Photographers consult with Editors. For the first time, most of the pictures for the yearbook were made by the staff cameramen and developed in the school's dark room. Juniors Marc Briand and Fred Larkin and Freshman Harlan Parker were kept busy covering” the important events at school. Here they explain to the editors why the picture just won't work. Thespian Troupe 742 The International Thespian Society encourages advancement of standards of excellence in dramatic arts. The organization helps students to attain a better mastery of language, to develop poise and self-control, and to ap- preciate dramatic literature and its techniques. This year Troupe 742 worked with the class plays by helping with make-up, stage crew, and publicity; and provided entertainment for local clubs. A Thespian can earn points by participating in the club's various activities. Ten points are required to become a member of Troupe 742. When a Thespian earns sixty points or more, an award is given and the person earns the rank of Honor Thespian. This year the club proudly presented the award to Leta Stukesbary, Danny North, Karen Windholz, Marlene Stum, Carole DeWald, Susan Kraft, and Janet Huff. The club votes on the best senior Thespians at the end of the year. The activities, enthusiasm, points, and ability of the senior is taken into account. The Parent Game” A School Has Many Images One of the least rewarding (but probably most vital) facets of a school system is the position of cook. Seldom are compliments heard; however, Ness City schools are very fortunate to have not only cooks that prepare palatable, nu- tritious meals, but also display an interest in each student and his activities. HIGH SCHOOL COOKS: Viola Wolfe, Shirley Swim, Ramona McDonald. GRADE SCHOOL COOKS; Patty Lampe, Mary Pfannenstiel, Donna Leterle. The school nurse has a leadership role in the development, implementation, and in- terpretation of the school health program. Mrs. Goff's activities are broad and varied. While she spends much of her time in indi- vidual consultation, she also has the satis- faction of working with many community and school groups. 44 USD 303 Bus Drivers FRONT ROW: R. Stenzel, S. Although underdogs in several of their games, the Eagles proved to be one of the most powerful 2A teams in the state, becoming the Eastern Divi- sion champions and the runners-up in the district competition. Despite the short practice period before the first game, the team played near-perfect ball and defeated Wakeeney 20-0. The lone defeat of the 1971 season was avenged as Ness defeated Dighton to close regular season play. The Eagles repeated as Eastern Division champions with a 4-0 league record. Then, in the playoff games, the injuries the team avoided during the regular season seemed to strike almost everyone. With several Eagles playing with injuries, the team lost its W.K.E.A. crown to Ullysses 14-19. Still plagued by injuries, the Eagles lost the district playoff game to Meade, the eventual State champions. 60 10 .. Brad Horchem--------So. 11 .. Mark Pfannenstiel--So. 20 ..
