The Lance Neshannock Junior-Senior High School 301 Mitchell Road New Castle, PA Anonymity. Because of the high enrollment in most schools, many students are just faces in the crowd. However, at Neshannock High School, those faces are more than just those of other fish in a pond. They belong to people we have grown up with or acquaintances we have just made. Because the size of Neshannock is smaller than most other schools, teachers are able to get to know the students more personally. This allows for better student-teacher relationships. That is what makes Neshannock stand out from other schools. That’s also what gives Neshannock . . . A TOUCH OF CLASS « 2 Opening Steve And Meredeth Spark A Successful Year For Student Council “The People At Neshannock Are What Make It Such A Special Place.” Senior Linda Girvan Two of the faces in the crowd at Neshannock that became highly recognizable as the year progress were those of Student Council President Steve Griffiths and his Vice President Meredeth McKissick. For the past few years, Student Council has done one or two successful projects such as the food drive and the Christmas Dance. But as the year went by, it deteriorated into a useless group because enthusiasm was missing. Steve and Meredeth helped to put some of that enthusiasm expressed by members of council to work, and started some new things this past year that likely will stay around for a while. The Homecoming Semi-Formal, the volleyball tournament to fund the food drive, and a 50’s day, culminating with a 50’s dance, all were new this year. And another successful Christmas Dance as well as other projects that Student Council carries out all made for a super year for everyone at N.H.S. Thanks to both Steve and Meredeth for all of the hard work and dedication to the betterment of Neshannock Junior-Senior High School. Students can be seen working hard in class or just hanging around in the halls. During lunch, you can work in the computer room, but be sure you get a pass from Mrs. Carenbauer before A period is over. Many students like to go to the library instead of study hall. They can be seen reading a magazine or working on a term paper. After school, there are many different activities, such as sports, auxiliary corps, and clubs. “There Is Plenty To Do Here, If You Are Willing To Get Involved. ” Junior Mary Carenbauer The Cheerleaders Show Their Spirit, Despite Critics Despite the wise cracks about the way they are too concerned with how they look, etc., the cheerleaders at Neshannock play an important role stirring school spirit at Neshannock. Of course, we all know that they cheer at all of the football and basketball games. But, what else to they really do? Most cheerleaders give what study halls they have to paint signs for the games. They also practice for an hour at least once per week to learn new cheers and to discuss what they plan to do at the games. The cheerleaders often must leave for games at the same time as the team and usually arrive back with them. They also represent Neshannock at competitions in the area and spend much of their time in the summer at the school at clinics and at cheerleading camp. And, remember, they really get very little thanks for what they do. So, the next time you want to criticize the cheerleaders, remember: they do serve an important role here at N.H.S. Opening 5 Just Where Do Neshannockfs Finest Hang Out? Hangouts. Every school has them. But just where do Neshannock students do their hanging? During school, you can find seniors, especially the senior football players, hanging out at “The Mirror”. Tradition has it that only seniors can be seen here, so it has become the traditional hangout in school for them. You can also find a few people who spend every spare moment they have in the computer room. Care to give up lunch to hang out with an Apple lie? The weekends are when you find out where the best hangouts are. Of course, McDonalds is the place to get food, but for some unknown reason, they don’t like people to hang out there for too long. So, now where do you go. Across the street to Wendy’s, of course, where a throng gathers every weekend. 6 Opening Opposite page: Top - The band, directed by Mr. Shaffner plays at pre-game. Opening 7 “It’s A Break Time To Get Away And Talk To Your Friends” Some new things came to the cafeteria during the past year. To begin with, a food service replaced the school run cafeteria. There was a definite difference in the menu - a much bigger variety of foods was served. However, there were many complaints about how much food was given and about the costs of extras (10 cents for a piece of bread!!!). Many students opted for the Lancer’s Line for pizza, hamburgers, and french fries everyday, or for the salad bar. Another change was the addition of octogan tables in the cafeteria. This was probably more dramatic at first since everyone had to readjust to the new seating. 8 Opening In class, there are nervous shuffles and eyes begin to look at the clock. An occasional rumble from an empty stomach tells everyone the time of day - LUNCHTIME!!! Have an ambulance ready for the person who might wander in front of a classroom door when the bell rings, especially for 4th period lunch. Then the race is on. If you don’t want to stand in line, you throw your books on the shelves outside of the cafeteria and make a beeline to the lunchline. If you’re lucky, you might have close to a half hour to eat. But, of course, get there too late, and you may not even finish by the time your lunch period is over. Lunch period serves another purpose as well. Since study halls have all but been eliminated, lunch period is a needed get-away from the rigors of the classroom. Ask the average student, and it probably will be one of the best times of his day. Opening 9 Among the highlights of every school year are the special events that are scattered throughout the calendar. Homecoming is always a banner occasion early in the year, with the introduction of the court and the crowning of the queen being the high water mark of the fall season. The senior nights for football and basketball are emotional moments for those who participate. Then, of course, you hear of people making dates and dinner reservations for after the Christmas Dance in early December. The musical dominates the early spring, with the late-night practices, while the end of school is marked by the pageantry of the prom. There are many people who are involved in our activities; people who often go unnoticed by students, faculty, and people outside of the school. These are the officers and advisors who make the special events held during each year possible. For instance, Student Council, along with their advisor, Mr. Barley, sponsor Homecoming. They also purchase the crown and flowers for the queen and all of the members of the court. Mr. Frediani puts in quite a bit of extra duty by directing all of the school plays. The Junior Class officers pay for and, with the help of volunteers, put up all of the decorations for the prom. And for directing the choir and band during concerts and during the musical, Mr. D’Angelo and Mr. Schaffner must be commended for their hard work and dedication to the musicians at Neshannock. To all of those who made the events held during the past year, we thank you for displaying . . . A TOUCH OF CLASS! Homecoming Pam Evans Is Crowned Queen On Friday, September 18, the Neshannock Lancers played hosts to the Big Red from West Middlesex. But, more importantly, at least as far as some people are concerned, Neshannock celebrated Homecoming. Three girls from the sophmore, junior, and senior classes were chosen in elections about two weeks prior to the Homecoming game. Of course, they experienced the general hoopla that always surrounds the Homecoming court. But, as the game drew near, nervous expectations came as well as the girls worries about such things as their hair, their dress, whether they would fall off of the car they rode, etc. The big evening arrived and everyone was concerned about the rain that had fallen during the week. While the field was not in condition to be used, the court did get to ride around the field, and walked to the front of the stands on the track. Tensions mounted as the drum roll played. The stadium cheered as Pam Evans was named the 1987 Homecoming Queen. After receiving the queen’s flowers and tiara, Pam took her traditional ride around the field, then exit-ted the field the a throng of people waiting to congratulate her. Congratulations to all of the girls who made up the 1987 Homecoming Court. 14 Homecoming Let’s Meet Our 1987 Homecoming Queen, Pam Evans On Friday, September 18, 1987, during a special ceremony at halftime, Senior Pam Evans joined an elite club by being named Homecoming Queen. What are some of the things that make Pam an excellent choice for Queen? Pam is very involved with Ne-shannock. She has been class treasurer during all three years in high school. Prior to that, she served as a Student Council representative. She has been a cheerleader since 9th grade and served as captain during her senior year. She also belonged to various clubs and organizations. But what makes Pam the perfect choice is her friendly attitude toward everyone. She always has a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. That’s what makes a Homecoming Queen. Homecoming 15 Homecoming Dance This year, for the first time, Neshannock’s Student Council decided to hold its Homecoming Dance on the Saturday following Homecoming. Because it was a first time event, some people were somewhat skeptical about it. But, by the time the dance came about, everyone was anticipating what would come about. Because the dance was semi-formal, Student Council decided that a band would be appropriate. Phil Bretton’s band, “Highway 61”, provided the music, another plus since many people wanted to see Phil. Those in attendance rocked the night away as the band played their tunes. Later in the evening, the Homecoming Court, led by Queen Pam Evans, was introduced, then led a dance just for the court. It was a special evening, enjoyed by all, and one that should become a tradition at Neshan-nock. Thanks to Student Council for making the new Homecoming Dance a rousing success. 16 Homecoming Dance For It's First Year, The Home-coming Dance Was A Success And I Enjoyed ItI” Phil Bretton And “Highway 61” Rocks Neshannock At The Homecoming Dance Cathy Cunningham, Junior Attendant One of Neshannock’s own played his favorite brand of rock and roll music for the Homecoming Dance crowd this year. Phil Bretton had always wanted to play at a school dance, so when Student Council decided to have a band for the dance, Phil’s band, “Highway 61” was a logical choice. The band is made of Phil and his brothers, and marked the last time that their bass player, Walter Fortner, would be playing with them. All members are alumni of Neshannock High School. At the dance, the band played tunes ranging from Springsteen to oldies to some slow songs that the band learned just for this dance. The sounds made for an even more enjoyable evening for everyone, and helped to make the Homecoming Dance a success. Homecoming Dance 17 Senior Nights Seniors Honored For Participation Three times during the year, Neshannock takes the opportunity to honor those seniors who have participated in activities surrounding the football and basketball seasons. This year, many seniors were pointed out for their contributions to the success of both seasons. On Friday, October 30, prior to the final home game of the 1987 football season, approximately 50 members of the Class of 1988 were honored for their participation on the football team, on the cheerleading squad and in the band and auxiliary corps. Later in the year, on Monday, February 15, two members of the Girl’s Basketball team were honored for their contributions to the team. The following evening, 13 members of the Boy’s Basketball team and the cheerleaders were honored as senior members. The 1988 Lance Staff salutes these seniors as well for their time and effort in these activities. 18 Senior Nights The photo's below are pictures of some of the participants in the Senior Night Activities, held in October and February of the past school year. Senior Night Is A Special Time For Both The Senior And His Or Her Parents. Amy Rentz and her parents show the pride exuded by all participants during Senior Night. Other Seniors Go Unrecognized, But Are Not Forgotten While many of the members of the Class of 1988 were recognized for their efforts during one of the Senior Nights, some prominent members of the class went through the year without the same type of special recognition. For this reason, a special salute goes out to all of the members of the Class of 1988 who participated in the following activities: Tennis, Baseball, Track and Field, Golf, Cross Country, Pep Band, Volleyball, Student Council, Class Officers and All Those involved with other activities at N.H.S. Senior Nights 19 Scenes from the 1st Annual Neshannock-T.C.B.Y. Yogurt Yo Frozen Yogurt Eating contest, which raised $200 for United Cerebral Palsy. It’s Yogurt! Neshannock Students Cool Off on Frozen Yogurt for U.C.P. On Friday, January 22, the Student Coucnil of Neshannock High School sponsored a Frozen Yogurt Eating Contest. This Contest was held to raise money for United Cerebral Palsy, an organization which helps people afflicted this this crippling desease. There were 13 excited participants who started the mornign quickly, only to find that eating frozen yogurt isn’t as easy qs it sounded. A few contestants got more than there share of yogurt. Dan Ambuster and Phil Panella battled it out for the top eater, a title which Dan eeked out. The most important thing was that $200 was raised to support U.P.C. and their cause in the Lawrence County area. Many thanks go out to T.C.B.Y. Yogurt for helping to sponsor the event. 20 Yogurt Eating Contest ! The Contest Within The Contest Thanks . .. . . . for a Job well done!!! Okay, so most of you didn’t get to see the contest. And, so what? How exciting can a Frozen Yogurt contest be, anyway? You should have been there! You could tell right away who was serious about it. Pace yourself? Forget it, if you wanted to win. Freshman Eric Holtz charged into an early lead, eating 4 cups of the frozen stuff in the first 3 minutes. As time went on, Eric faded, but still finished with a total of 9 cups eaten. Things really got serious, as Dan Ambuster and Phil Panella got into the swing of things. Dan and Phil battled it out to the end, but Dan ate 1 more, finishing with 12 cups eaten. So you weren’t there? Just wait till next year! 21 The 1987 musical “Pajama Game,” directed by Mr. Don Fre-diani, was a great success. The plot centered around a fight for a seven and a half cent raise for the employees of a pajama factory. Lee Altman portrayed Sid Sirokian, Anthony Geramita was Vernon Hines, Bridget Villani’s character was the dingy Gladys, and Jean Fortuna was Babe. Other members of the cast included Greg Alexander, Julee Loth, John DiSil-vestri, Tasha Anzalone, and Leslie Menencino. The highlight of the evening was when Anthony dropped his pants. The orchestra was directed by Todd Izzo and Mr. Lou D’Angelo directed the choir. As he always does, Mr. Fred did a fabulous job. There also was a senior citizens night on which the auditorium was packed. Like previous years, after the citizens enjoyed the musical, they were invited into the gym for goodies and punch which were provided by the National Honor Society. This also gave the citizens a chance to meet and talk with the cast. Musical 22 “The Pajama Game Lee Altman: Neshannock’s Leading Man “The Pajama Game” Was Directed By: Mr. Don Frediani Director For the past three years, Neshannock’s male lead in the musicals has been Lee Altman. Lee’s first lead was as a freshman in the musical “Kiss Me Kate.” Then as a sophomore, Lee once again won the starring role, this time as a gangster in “Guys and Dolls.” In the 1987 musical, “The Pajama Game,” he starred as the tough new plant foreman. Besides his musical roles, Lee is active in other school activities. He is the scorekeeper for the girl’s basketball team, a member of the photography club, the baseball team, and the high school choir, where he was selected to the district choir. Look for Lee in the 1988 musical, once again playing the hero of the story. Musical 23 The Jr.- Sr. Prom On Saturday May, 9, 1987, the Neshannock Junior-Senior Prom was held at the New Englander. This year’s theme was “Never Say Goodbye.” In all the prom was a smashing success. Everyone had a great time thanks to the many committees that prepared an enchanting evening. During that special night couples mingled and had a great time. Even after the prom ended the celebrations continued. That night would not have been possible without Mr. Barley’s extreme dedication. And memories wouldn’t have been captured if Mr. Wiczen didn’t video tape this special night. Thanks to all who were involved for their hard work and dedication. 24 Jr.- Sr. Prom I Had As Much Fun Decorating For The Prom As I Did Attending It.” Behind The Scenes The morning of May 9, 1987, was a very hectic one for the juniors that had to decorate for the prom, but they have a great time. They knew that many people would enjoy themselves and have the time of their lives. Thanks to all who helped decorate and make the prom the success it was. Jr.- Sr. Prom 25 While memories of a school year are many the ones that stand out the most are of the many activities held throughout the school year. This is just one more look back at 1987-88 . . . This year’s seniors are truly a special class, for they are a close group of friends. They grew up together, and shared the joys and sorrows throughout the years. Most of them attended elementary school together. Although some of them have moved away, they will never be forgetten, but will remain in the hearts of their friends. Add to her credits six Tri-County Cross-Country Championships (including Junior High), four W.P.I.A.L. Cross-Country Championships, first place in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races in the Tri-County meets over the past 4 years, and seventh place finishes in the 1600 meter run at the P.I.A.A. track meets for the past two years. Stephanie has also shown her unselfishness by running in the 3200 meter relay in all of the track meets in which she has competed. For all her success, Stephanie has always shown a sense of humility and a respect for her competitors. Couples could be seen throughout the school walking to class, arm in arm, or even doing the important task of holding up the walls. There were a few senior couples to be seen: Meredeth and “Nicky”, Danny Ambuster and Michelle Morrison, and (on again, off again) Karl Som-merfeld and Nicole Davies. Other seniors opted for underclass sweethearts, for someone from another school, or for a graduate. And while you might think you’d never see “that person” with a date, just attend the prom, Christmas Dance, or any other special occasion and you’ll probably see them there. All of these areas are a part of the English curriculum at N.H.S. Students study various types of literature, learn the many rules of sentence structure, and develop the skills necessary to deliver a public speech, not only to assist in career goals, but to enhance their lives. The goal of the math department is to build and strengthen the basic skills needed for everyday life and to develop new skills that students may find useful in future studies. Various levels of math are available for the needs of all students. Through problem solving, students gain insight and skills necessary to solve many problems faced in real life. Math truly is a useful tool outside of the classroom. Civics, the 9th grade course, exposes the students to the laws of our land and the workings of our government. P.O.D. looks at the problems faced in a democratic system. Having a general knowledge of science makes understanding these changes easier. With this in mind, the Science Department works hard to give students a backround in physical, earth and space, biological, and chemical sciences. All students must take a required science course through 10th grade, when all students must take biology. Students may then opt for college prep science (chemistry and physics) or general science. Students may also study the environment of our world in “Environmental Biology.” Our goal is a student well-rounded in the sciences. If that is the case, then the Fine Arts Department at Neshannock represents us well. Mr. Patrick McAn-drew is helping many students to become highly proficient artists, as can be attested to by the many fine pieces of art on display throughout the year. The Music Department helps to develop an appreciation of music in grades 7 and 8 in all students. Sure the classes are fun. Their very nature makes them that way. However, those boys you see in sewing are learning a skill that may be of great importance some day - being able to darn socks or mend clothes is important when you are single. Shop classes offer woodworking and metalworking skills that students can use as a hobby, to save money on their homes, or to prepare for a career. All of the classes under the heading practical arts are useful, and important, areas which help students lead a more interesting and full life. 74 Practical Arts Faculty Mr. Gary Weimer Mrs. Arlene Wetzel Mr. Paul Wilson Mr. Thomas Wiczen Science English, French Industrial Arts Mr. William Young Students who are found to have special needs have various places to go for help. In either case, the faculty of Neshannock High School is there to care for the special student’s needs. Help For Those With Special Needs Special Needs Faculty 75 There are many organizations that make contributions to the betterment of Neshan-nock High School. And many are deserving of space on this page. However, we felt that special attention should be given to one of the musical groups at Neshannock - the Ne-shannock Lancer Band. The band does not start their year when school starts. They start during the summer. Auxiliary Corps start early in the summer, practicing routines they will use in the fall. The rest of the band joins them for band camp at the same time that football starts. Practices everyday in school and once a week at night add to the rigors of football season. And like the football team, Friday night is their reward for hard work. The band does not quit after football. They work hard preparing for two concerts during the year, parades, and basketball games. As a reward, this year’s band traveled to New York City in late April. Many thanks to the band for helping our school display . . . A TOUCH'OF CLASS!!! Lance Staff “So You Think Doing A Yearbook Is Easy99 Every year it’s the same thing: “The same people are in every picture!”; “There is too much writing!”; “There’s too much space around the outside!” While making a yearbook may look and sound as easy as the statements made above, it just isn’t so. If you still don’t believe it, just ask Tricia Conti, this year’s Editor-in-Chief. Plans for this year’s book began last spring, while some of the spring activities found in this book were taking place. The design for the cover, page design, and what we were going to report on were decided upon at that time. Then came summer vacation. Imagine trying to get everyone to remember what was discussed three months before! Still sound easy? Well, just remember that every page in this book was designed by hand!!! There were no computers used or predesigned pages. Every story, caption, and title had to be created. Also, the staff sold ads to help defray your cost. You can see that this is a big job indeed! So, before you criticize the staff for putting out such a “lousy” book, think again. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN ON OUR END OF THE STICK!!! Lance Staff 79 Student Council Doing More Than You Think Perhaps the most important organization at Neshannock High School for the concerns of the students is Student Council. Without the dedication of the members of Student Council, many of the important activities throughout the year would be forgotten. Did you know, for instance, that Student Council is charged with the task of organizing homecoming? This includes purchasing the crown and roses for the queen, as well as purchasing flowers for everyone else involved. There is no help from the district or from outside of the school, except from the generous people who donate the use of their cars for the evening. Then, this year, they also had to organize and decorate for the Homecoming Dance, held the next day. Student Council also helps bring assembly programs to our school, charters organizations, organizes mixers, sponsors and organizes and decorates for the Christmas Dance, and collects and distributes the food from the Thanksgiving Food Drive. This year they also sponsored a frozen yogurt eating contest to raise money for United Cerebral Palsy. Student Council also helps to make improvements to our school, such as purchasing a marquee for the front of the school and helping to decorate the gym. So, you see, N.H.S. would not be the same without its Student Council. Many thanks to the people pictured on this page for their dedication to the betterment of Neshannock High School. Precious little is known about the vocal groups because the instrumental groups are so well known. Mr. Lou D’Angelo and his troup are hard at work from the beginning of the year, preparing the songs that will be used in the various concerts throughout the year. The members of the choir are also heavily involved in the musical, providing the leads and back-up vocalists used. Two members of this year’s choir were selected to represent Neshannock at the district choir. Lee Altman, who was also selected last year, and Bridget Villani attended the weekend of song with choir members from other area schools. Hats off to our hard working and dedicated choir. Following the retirement of Mr. Harry Booth, Mr. Robert Bleggi was selected to fill the position. In his first year as athletic director, Mr. Bleggi has made improvements in most all areas of athletics. The most notable difference was the football field, a project that he took on himself. Other differences may have been less noticable to the public, but just ask the coaches and players-they’ll tell you that there is a difference in the way things are done. Congratulations, Mr. Bleggi, on being selected as the new athletic director. Through your improvements, you have given the athletic programs . . . Lancers Suffer Through 1-9 Season The 1987 Lancer football team, coached by first year head coach, Mr. Bill Young, had great determination that never ended. Despite a season that did not go according to their plans, the team never gave up. They continued to work their hardest on and off the field, by going to practice and watching game films. Although their record was not as promising as expected, they showed that Lancer spirit in their win over the Union Scotties. Injuries early in the season also hampered their game plan. That, along with some unfortunate bad luck, ended the season early this year. The senior members of the team, Mike Pakovitch, E. J. Borghetti, Dan Ambuster, Brett Grotefend, Alan Pugh, and many others, played to the best of their ability. The same can be said for the underclass members. They have good players and a lot of potential. In the following years that will play an important role for the football team. Next year, with the start of a new season, the younger players will have more experience under their belts. This year’s season was not lost to those who made All - Section. 100 Football The following players were commended: on offense Alan Pugh -first team lineman, E. J. Borghetti - second team end; honorable mention: Mike Pakovitch - quart-back, Bill Pisciuneri and Scott Stewart - running back. On defense, Brian Covert and Ricci LaRocco - second team linebacker; honorable mention: Anthony Geramita - lineman, Bob Ambuster - linebacker, Pakovitch - punter, and Pisciuneri - defensive back and return specialist. Congratulations to the seniors and to the underclassmen, good luck next season. Let’s Meet Our New Coach Scores This year’s football team was under the leadership of first year head coach Bill Young. Coach Young is an enthusiastic man who wants only the best for himself and his team. Coach Young attended Laurel High School, where he was an offensive guard and defensive end. He continued his playing career at Westminster College as an offensive tackle. His coaching career began small, coaching midgets following graduation from college. He went on to be an assistant coach at Laurel for seven years before becoming the head coach at Neshannock. Despite a tough first season, the future of Neshannock Lancer football looks bright with a man like Bill Young at the helm. The LANCE staff wishes Coach Young future success as the head coach at Neshannock. Football 103 J.V. Football Juniors Post 2 Wins, Show Improvement While their record of 2 wins and 6 losses would lead many to believe that they were not very good, the J.V. football team did show great character all year, fought hard to improve themselves, and did get better as the year progressed. Also, because of injury problems on the varsity squad, many of the J.V. players were pressed into double duty. Coaches Wiczen and Perrotta were often hard pressed to find substitutes if they were needed. However, the team did find themselves in most every game. They also gained the needed playing time necessary to get better. Look for many of the same people who made up the J.V. team to star for the varsity team in ’88. And while the team won only one game, they played hard, ending with a tie and losing several by only a few points. Coaches Pat McAndrew and Dwayne Dicks had trouble holding practices at times because of the small number of players on the team. However, everyone made contributions to this year’s team, gaining needed experience. With hard work and dedication, these future Lancers may help to lead Neshannock football back to the top. Neshannock’s 1 Man In Tennis To look at Chuck Dess, the last place you would expect to find him would be the tennis court. Perhaps playing guard on the football team (which he does): but as a tennis player, especially the number one man? If you ask the opponents who played Chuck, they will tell you that Chuck certainly does deserve his position as the 1 man. This past year, Chuck helped to lead the team to a second place finish in the section and a berth in the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs. The high point of the season was at the section singles tournament, which Chuck won, defeating teammate Phil Bret-ton in the final. Volleyball Young Team Strives For Respectability This year’s version of the Neshannock Girl’s Volleyball team had one word to describe it -youth. While most of the team had one or two years of experience, the squad had no seniors to look to for leadership. Another problem for Coach Chris Navarra was depth, as only eleven girls were on the team this year. Because of injury and sickness, there were games where many girls would play in the J.V. match, then come right back and play in the Varsity match moments later. The youth and depth problems led to an inconsistant season which saw the girls play well one night, then awfully the next, and finish with a 6-6 record. While their record might have been less than some expected, they did gain respect as they were in most every match they played with only a few exceptions. With the entire team returning for next season with another year of experience, expect bright things from girl’s volleyball. They then went on to capture the 1987 Tri-County Golf Championship and finish 7th in the W.P.I.A.L. team playoffs. Individual honors went to Tom Messner, who finished third in the District Qualifier. For the third straight year, Ne-shannock’s basketball team entered the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs with another impressive win loss mark. Coach Jim Smiley’s troups entered the 1987-88 basketball season less two of N.H.S.’s lifetime scoring leaders, who were lost to graduation. However, a strong nucleus of experienced players returned this year and picked up the slack. The Lancers carried a 6-2 record into January, including a section win over Shenango and several victories over larger schools. But, the first week of the new year was not kind, as the Lancers dropped two heartbreaking games to Frew Mill in double overtime and Laurel by 2 points. The team rebounded for four impressive victories over Wilmington, Mohawk, Riverside, and Union to finish the first half with a share of 1st place with a section record of 5-2. The Lancers split the first two games of the second half, defeating Shenango and losing to Frew Mill in another close game. The team then swept through the rest of the section, including a blow-out win over Laurel and an exciting overtime win 112 Boy’s Basketball over Riverside, finishing with a 11-3 section record and entering the playoffs as the top “AA” team. (See the article on the following page.) The 1987-88 Lancers were led by senior starters Ricci LaRocco, Brett Grotefend, Mike Pakovitch, and Kevin DeLorenzo. All saw plenty of playing time during last year’s W.P.I.A.L. championship season and their experience and leadership made the difference this year. LaRocco and Grotefend both canned three point shots with regularity, making them a deadly combination, while Pakovitch and DeLorenzo made up one of the most imposing front lines in the league. Junior Scott Grady finished the starting lineup, adding scoring punch when needed. Senior E.J. Borghetti and junior Darrly Genkinger provided the bench strength. The Lancers, behind a strong second half comeback, defeated Rochester in their opening round game. However, their quarterfinal opponent, Northgate, proved to be a tough won, turning back numerous Lancer comeback efforts before finally sending the Lancers to defeat. Ne-shannock still had playoff hopes alive as they needed 2 Northgate victories to go on in the playoffs. They saw these hopes extinguished as Northgate finished second in the tournament. Boy’s Basketball 115 Girl's Qualify For The Playoffs While still showing the incon-sistancy that plagued them in the past, the Girl’s Basketball team made great improvements this year, finishing with a mark of 7- 13. The Lancers won enough games in the section (4) to qualify for the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs, along with five other teams from the league. While their section record was not that sparkling, they did make some good efforts throughout the year, including a tremendous 4th quarter comeback effort against Farrell in the Senior Game which fell just short. Second year coach Doug Knox’s girl’s were led by senior Amy Alexander, who led the team in almost every offensive catagory throughout the year. Senior Fran-cine Cialella and junior Karen Girvan battled under the boards, while sophomore Celeste Altman chipped in with added punch in scoring. Junior Amy Brown provided the tough defense. Ladies Choose Not To Participate Although the Lady Lancers qualified for the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs, they cose chose not to participate. Both teams lacked personel in key area’s that could have pushed them over the top. The boy’s team, under the direction of head coach Bob Bleggi and assistant Fred Gibson, finished with a record of 2 wins and 3 losses, while the girl’s, under coach Doug Knox, finished with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. While neither team advanced to playoff competition, stellar performances were turned in by several athletes. The girl’s were led by Stephanie Wasserman, who qualified for her 3rd state meet, where, for the second straight year, she finished 7th in the 1600 meter run. Other top performers were Amy Alexander, Betty Chen, and the 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams. No boys qualified for the state meet; however, John DiSilvestri and Jim Duda consistently won points for the team. As both teams return many, the 1988 season looks to be a strong one in track. Coaches Baseball It Was A Long Spring The 1987 Baseball Season must have seemed like a nightmare for coaches Vince Mezza and Pat McAndrew. The Lancers won only one game during the year. This year, the Art Department and Student Council combined efforts to decorate the front lobby to create a winter wonderland. Snowflakes hung from the ceiling and a huge tree towered over the area. The highlight of the Christmas scene was the window paintings, shown here, that were done by Mr. Patrick McAndrew’s art classes. 1 Alex Page Thomas Aschauer Douglos Schneider Christy Prahl johnGwaltney Tommi Donahue Alan Blum Lee Schmidt David Morel Monica Noce Robert Albertson JimTrowell Erie Olson Betsy Dalbeck Jim Burnum Steve Clark ome people lusTcdri'f picture themselves with a smoker. The previous pages have tried to capture the 1987-88 school year, forever bringing lasting memories for all of us to enjoy. No, you can’t go back in time, but by turning through these pages, we hope to allow you to imagine yourself walking through the hallowed halls of N.H.S., to see the friendly faces of the teachers and other students that we so fondly remember, to relive the triumph and heartache of the exciting football and basketball games, to recapture the pagentry that is the prom, to feel the tension mount as the homecoming queen is about to be announced.
