While every year offers something special to every student at Neshannock, we felt that this year was more than just a special year. It was a year when new friends were made, new things were introduced to the school (the message board, the big screen T.V., and even music now and then in the lunch room), new organizations were formed, and new and fresh ideas made into results we can be proud of. While many words can be found to describe the year, we at the Lance felt that there was only one way to truly describe the 1986-87 school year: it was a CLASSIC YEAR!!! SCHOOL SPIRIT Spirit, an inner feeling that com- pels someone to do what he does. This feeling compels our student to say We re number one when we are losing a game. This feeling can be seen int the river of red at sports games. But most of all, school spirit is seen in the eyes of a graduate, re- turning during a lunch period, just to say hi. I've missed this. 5 EXPRESSIONS It has been said that one's person- ality can be seen in his expressions. Enjoyment, frustration, questioning, and contentedness are, perhaps, the most common, as they can be seen in any school. However, Neshannock has such expressions as where'd ya get that answer? ; well, we won! ; what's up Dr. Ketterer? ; or even I'm okay, your okay, and wandering this hall is the highlight of my day! FRIENDSHIP Many of the students at Neshan- nock have grown here all of their school days. Each has that special friend with whom secrets are shared and complaints are filed. But because we have grown up together, everyone is friends. Each is just as proud and happy for the other, just one aspect of our school which makes us num- ber one. FASHION TRENDS Times change, classes change, and clothes change. Neshannock is a window to fashion trends of the 80's. From the ripped demin to silk, the personalities and fashion tastes of individuals are vivid in a glance down the hall between classes. Whether the trend be red and white or plaid, Neshannock students use the trend to say I'm me! OUR FACULTY A school is not a school without a faculty. However, not many schools can say that their faculty compares to ours. Neshannock may be small, but the teachers know their students— past and present. Our teachers do their best to convey their learnings along with a positive outlook on the future. They go out of their way to make students the adult leaders of tomorrow. “GUYS AND DOLLS Neshannock's 1986 Musical Presentation On April 16, 18, and 19, 1986 Neshannock presented the mu- sical fable of Broadway, Guys and Dolls . The plot paralleled the relationships of Nathan De- troit (David Sloat) and Sky Mas- terson (Lee Altman) two gang- sters and their girlfriends. Miss Adelaide (Bridget Villani) and Sa- rah Brown (Allison Fortner), a missionary. Other members of the cast in- cluded John DiSilvestri, Antho- ny Geramita, Jim Aceirno, Greg Alexander, Tim Jay, Eric Rich- ards, Jeff Marcella, Amy Fox, Nanci Fortner, Phil Bretton, and Bob Benson. The orchestra was directed by Mr. Tom Schaffner while Mr. Lou D'Angelo directed the mem- bers of the chorus. Although the members of these groups don't receive much attention for the work they do, the musical could not go on without them. The director of the musical was Mr. Donald Frediani. As always. Mr. Fred did a magnificant job directing the cast through their stage moments, dialoge presenta- tion, and other acting nuances. And also, as always, our senior citizens presentation, held on April 16, was a smashing success. The auditorium was filled to overflowing for the performance and members of the cast got an opportunity to meet the audience afterwards. TIME WILL REVEAL The 1986 Junior-Senior Prom On Friday, May 9, 1986, the Neshannock Class of 1987 hosted the annual Junior-Senior Prom at the New Englander. Members of the Class of 1987 chose as the prom theme Time will Reveal. Long before the night began, the class officers and decorating committees spent long hours of preparation to en- sure the prom's success. Much time was spent the Thursday night before the prom setting ta- bles and decorating the Ridge- wood Room for the coming night. Finally, the special night ar- rived and the fun began. Couples spent the evening posing for pic- tures, conversing with friends, and dancing to the sounds of Amber. Even after the prom itself end- ed, the fun continued into the wee hours of the morning as cou- ples went out for dinner and at- tended post-prom parties. Many thanks to all those who helped to make the prom so spe- cial, especially to Mr. Barley and to Mr. Wiczen, who recorded the entire evening on video tape. HOMECOMING The night - Friday, October 10th. The place - Neshannock's Football Stadium. The event - the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. But, before that, let's remem- ber where the girls come from. In an election held in grades 10, 11, 12, three girls are chosen from each grade. Of these, the three senior girls will vie for Home- coming Queen. Imagine the pres- sure mounting as the day gets closer, especially when pictures must be taken, dresses chosen, and escorts selected. Then the night arrived. Stu- dent Council Secretary Melissa Canciello and Treasurer Bob Benson would have the honor of riding the first car and crowning the queen. They escorted the Crown Bearer and Flower Girl. They were followed by the Soph- more attendants, Tamara Bart- berger, Cathy Cunningham, and Tami Martello and their escorts David Wible, Scott Grady, and Jason Lowry. The Junior Atten- dants were Pam Evans, Michelle Morrison, and Bridget Villani and their escorts Kevin Flout, Karl Sommerfeld, and Vince Del- Signore. Lastly, the queen candi- dates entered the field. They were Becky Martello, Tina Mastrian, and Tracey Tullio with their es- corts Tim Jay, Mark Moses, and Jim Daugherty. Tension mounted and all eyes were on the field as Mr. Frediani read the name of the 1986 Home- coming queen - Tina Mastrian. Congratulations to all the girls on the court and especially to Tina, the 1986 Homecoming Queen. Senior Queen Candidates Becky Martello Tracey Tullio UNDERCLASS ATTENDANTS Juniors Pam Evans Michelle Morrison Bridget Villani Tamara Bartberger Cathy Cunningham Tami Martello A New Classic . . . THE CHRISTMAS DANCE Christmas, a time for joy, cheer, giving and re- ceiving. This year, Neshannock's student body re- ceived a new aspect in dances-a Christmas Semi- Formal. The new (and to be annual) affair was held on December 13 in the school cafeteria. However, while strolling under a roof draped in decoration, no one would have recognized it. Music was supplied by the great D.J. Master Gee . Along with flashing lights and a dancing partner, Master Gee kept the folks in attendance rocking throughout the night with a wide variety of songs. And when the guests were not dancing, they visit- ed their friends who were also in attendance, munched on snacks that were provided, and basical- ly had an all out good time. The guests also received a visit from a jolly old fat man; yes, Santa Claus himself(!?!) paid a visit to Neshannock to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and spread some Christmas cheer. For most of the guests, a dinner at a special res- taurant followed to cap a special evening. Many thanks go out to Student Council for mak- ing the Christmas Semi-Formal a reality and a suc- cess, and to Mr. Barley and Mr. Wiczen, without whom the dance would not have come off. CHARLEY'S CHARMERS THE SENIOR CLASS PLAY This year, the senior class present- ed Charlie's Charmers , by Tim Kelly. The play was directed by Mr. Donald Frediani, and was performed for the public on Saturday, Novem- ber 21. The play takes place in Charley- ville, a small town, which is plagued by a series of mysterious robberies. A group of students form Charley- ville High School try to solve the crimes. The whole thing becomes dangerous as outsiders meet face to face with the students. SPORTS Varsity Football THE PASS IS BACK!! Exciting. There is no other way to describe this years Lancer football team. While their record of 5 wins and 5 losses may not show it, those of us who followed the team know that this team was exciting. Why? The emergance of a passing game behind the strong arm of junior quarterback Mike Pakovitch and the receiving of end Brian DeLorenzo. And the running of back Bill Barker, who made his living running reverses and counters, many for big gains. And all of the others who contributed to make this season exciting, if not totally successful. The Lancers began the season on August 29 with a 28-24 come-from-behind victory over Western Beaver. The Lancers won with 2 touchdowns in the Seniors: Row 1-Bill Grady, Doug Wilson, Jeff Demofonte, Greg Alexander, Bill Miller, Jamie Kendall. Win number 4 came at the hands of a tough Mohawk squad, 8-6 in another hard-fought battle. Then things began to fall apart. In a game that began in a torren- tial downpour, and ended on a muddy Neshannock field, the Lancers lost a heartbreaker to Wilmington, 14-6. Farrell, the eventual W.P.I.A.L. Class A champion, came to visit on homecoming and defeated a fired up Lancer team, 21-14. The sea- son reached a low point when the Lancers were upset by Union, 22- 15. They then rebounded with a 27-13 victory over hapless Mer- cer, before bowing to Shenango on Senior Night 18-0. 1986 saw senior Brian DeLor- enzo became the top receiver in Western Pa. It also saw Mike Pa- kovitch set 4 school passing re- cords. Coach Bleggi ends his career as one of the winnin- gest coaches in Lawrence County history. During his tenure as head coach, Neshannock won or finished in a tie for the Tri-County North champion- ship 4 times and appeared in the W.P.I.A.L. Playoffs 3 times. But, wins and losses are not the only mark of a coach. A coach is also helps to mold the characters of the young men that follow him and help the members of the team to work as a unit. Coach Bleggi was usually not blessed with great players. But he was adept at molding them into a unit and at getting the most out of the players he had, building teams that often won more games than any- one expected. Neshannock will miss The Bear on the sidelines in the coming years. Thanks, Coach Bleggi, for a job well done. 52 Girl's Volleyball Seniors: Front - Laura Wajler, Paula Woulf, Marilee Morrow, Janice Madison. Back - Jean Fortuna, Melissa Messner, Ann Higgans. GAINING RESPECT What a difference a few years make!!! The girl's volleyball team made leaps and bounds in their quest for the top of the Tri-County league. The girl's improved on last year's 3-8 mark by finishing the year with a record of 5 wins and 6 losses. While they made an improvement of two games in their record, their biggest gain was in the quality of their play. The girls were in almost every match and even had a chance to pull off a couple of big upsets. While the team has not made its mark in any play- offs, the rest of the league knows that the Lancers will be a team to reckon with in the future. This year's squad was led by a nu- cleus of 7 seniors, 3 of whom were on the team 4 years ago when volleyball was re-introduced as a sport at Ne- shannock. Melissa Messner, Marilee Morrow, and Paula Woulf all com- pleted their fourth year on the squad. While these seniors will be missed, the volleyball team should continue its rise in power in the league. While their record of 6 wins with only 2 defeats was good, their record in invitation- al meets was not as good as in the past. And for the first time in quite some time, the team failed to place a runner in the state meet. Sophomore Jim Duda emerged as a leading runner, along with senior Pat Janovick. Other seniors included Tom McGuirk and J.C. Rose. They led the team to six straight dual meet victories after losing a tri- meet to start the season. They finished 3rd in the W.P.l.A.L. Qualifer meet and 6th in the fi- nal. The team also finished 3rd in the Tri-County meet. Above: Seniors, left to right, Pat Janovick, Tom McGuirk, and J.C. Rose. Back-Amy Moyer, Natalie Janovick, Anne Daugherty, Dawn Marie DeMatteo, Stephanie Wasserman. GIRL'S CROSS COUNTRY The Girl's Cross-Country team did not compete in any dual meets competitions this past year. The lack of numbers hurt the team this year as only 8 girls ran, 3 of whom were junior high runners. Howev- er, the girls did run in many invi- tational meets, doing well in most. Stephanie Wasserman had an ex- cellent season, culminating in a trip to the state Cross-Country championships. Stephanie fin- ished in the top 40 once again at the meet. GIRLS TENNIS This year, the Girls Tennis Team got a new coach. Miss Tra- vers. The team played well de- spite the loss of four of last year's seniors. The girls finished the season with a section record of 6- 6 and a team record of 8-6 overall. In the Section Doubles Tourna- ment held at Pearson Park, Amy Alexander and Marianna Deluca took third place. In the Section Singles tournament at Beaver Falls, Amy Alexander placed fourth. Since the majority of the play- ers are young and with the possi- bility of nine lettermen return- ing, next year's season could be very promising. The team was in the hunt for a playoff berth for much of the season, but losses in key matches kept them out for the second year in a row. Senior Frank DeLuca led an experi- enced group into the season. Three other seniors contributed heavily for Coach Dennis Marburger's squad. Todd Izzo, Bob Kwait, and Brian Murphy all played in their final golf season this past year. Under the direction of Coach Jim Smiley, the boys basketball team completed a season in which they found themselves atop the W.P.I.A.L. Class A ratings all year. They fin- ished the regular season with a 18-2 record, including an undefeated exhi- bition schedule against such oppo- nents as “Quad A Seneca Val- ley and “AAA Hopewell. They also defended their Union Holi- day Tounament championship. In league play, the team breezed through their first three opponents, then were tripped up at Wilmington. They then finished the first half of the sea- son unblemished. The second half started out with a tough victory over Shenango, followed by a shocking loss to Frew Mill. They then defeated Laurel and Elderton unconvincingly, be- fore catching fire once again, this time crushing Wilmington 72-62, then cruising through their final two games and into the W.P.I.A.L. Class A playoffs. The W.P.I.A.L. Playoffs be- gan for the Lancers with a meet- ing with Cornell at the New Castle Field House. In a hard fought contest, the Lancers pulled out a 3 point win in dou- ble overtime. In the semi-final, Neshannock took on Monaca. After trailing much of the game, the Lancers sent the game into overtime. With no time on the clock, Eddie Covert make an un- believable shot to win the game, 60-58. For the second straight year, the Lancers were in the W.P.I.A.L. finals! There they met Monesson. After the dust had cleared, the Lancers once again had triumphed, an 81-80 triple overtime win. In the state playoffs, the Lancers won their first round game easily, before bowing out in a tough double overtime loss the Kennedy Christian. Congratulations to all for the best effort ever! GIRL'S TRACK Due to a lack of both numbers and experience, the Girl's track team fin- ished with a 3 win. 3 loss record. Inexperience in many of the field events cost the girls dearly in all of the meets. The highlight of the sea- son, however, was that Stephanie Wasserman qualified for the P.I.A.A. State Track championships at Ship- pensburg, PA. Stephanie returns for 1987 track season along with most of her teammates from last season, making the girls a team to reckon with in the coming year. BASEBALL Neshannock Baseball had a re- building season under new Head Coach Vince Mezza. The loss of many key seniors hurt the Lances. But, though they suffered more losses than wins, the players learned to play together as a team. Many re- turnees are expected back this sea- son, so hopes are high for a bright 1987 in baseball. ___V- Row 1: Lee Altman, Steve McClure, Jamie Lambo, Don Colucci, Greg Walzer, Dave Kliem. After splitting their first 2 matches, the team ran off 9 straight victories, 8 over section foes before splitting their final 2 matches. Their victories included 5 shut-outs. The Lancers then entered the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs. They lost to a strong Quaker Valley team, 2-3, to end their season. Rememberances locked away Kept inside our heart. Keeping us together Even when we part. Dreams that we shared. Loves that didn't last, Precious golden memories Are now a part of our past. The best and worst of times Laughter that turned to tears. Faithful friends always there To guide us through the years. Football, basketball, prom night, musicals and the plays. Times that we'll never forget About our high school days. Fantasies we brought alive. Together we did it all. Determination-everyone had And never did we fall. We always tried the impossible We reached for stars up high. Never letting one precious dream Slip and pass us by. We are the Class of '87 And proud to have that name. A mind to do thinking, two hands and two eyes Are all the equipment God gives to the wise. Believe in yourself I You're divinely designed And perfectly mode for the work of mankind. This truth you must cling to through danger and pain,- The heights man has reached you can also attain. Believe to the very last hour, for it's true, That whatever you will you've been gifted to do. Believe in yourself and step out unafraid. By misgivings and doubt be not easily swayed. You've the right to succeed; the precision of skill Which betokens the great you can earn if you will I The wisdom of ages is yours if you'll read. But you've got to believe in yourself to succeed.
