Varsity Football 1985 was the year of the streak for the Neshannock Lancer football squad as the team wound up with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses. The year started out on a sour note, with a 49-0 loss at the hands of a powerful Freeport team, which went on to post an undefeated regular season record. Week number two brought with it loss number two, a 8-7 heart- breaker to Meadville. The Neshannock de- fense was taxed all night by the powerful running game of Meadville, but held a 7-2 lead until about midway through the 4th quarter when Meadville's halfback broke a long touchdown run to win the game. The next two weeks brought losses to league ri- vals West Middlesex 28-12 and Laurel 7-0, in a game the Lancers should have won. The out- look for the rest of the season looked so gloom with 4 strong teams left on the schedule. But the Lancers began their second streak of the season with a 6-0 Homecoming victory over previously unbeaten Mohawk. Todd Nicholson's touchdown run proved to be the winner for Neshannock. Jeff Demofonte pro- vided the winning margin the next week against previously once beaten Wilmington in an exciting 9-6 victory. The Lancers then posted three more victories, totally dominat- ing Slippery Rock 14-0, Union 13-0, and Mer- cer 29-7. The Lancers playoff hopes were decided on the Friday before the Shenango game and Shenango was in a must win situa- tion. The final score: 26-0 Shenango in the rain. While the season was not a total success, there were some standout performances by many of the Lancers. And with the reliance on underclassmen during the past year at many key positions, football's future is bright for next season.
