We opened the year to the banging of the roofers and the finishing touches of the clean- up crew following the fire (you do remember the fire). The 1986 LANCE reflects upon the past school year and the accomplishments of the people who made this year what it was. This year, we decided to pick a mystery senior and let you be the detective. There are clues throughout the book. Follow the instructions and discover who the mystery student is. Clue 1. This baby picture was given to us by his her mother. The mystery student does not even know that we have it. To see the next clue, go to Page 90. Fire Strikes N.H.S.! 4 Late Summer Blaze Damages Our School On the morning of August 9, 1985, a smoldering fire was discovered in and around the planter in the main lobby of Neshannock High School. The entire build- ing sustained extensive smoke and soot damage. The most severe damage was done to the lobby and the immediate first floor halls. S.O.S. International was awarded the bid to clean and restore the building and its contents. The entire building was cleaned, many ceilings replaced, gym and auditori- um and all hallways painted, carpets cleaned and all equipment inspected, cleaned and treated for corrosion. Amazingly, no school time was lost be- cause of the fire and the cleanup went smoothly. And Neshannock got the look of a new school thanks to the efforts of the cleanup crew. Although every school has stu- dents, none can compare with Neshannock's. Our students are not only academically advanced but they're also very spirited. Without the common school spirit each student shares, Neshan- nock High School would just be a building. The pride in their school can be seen in the students' eyes shenever the football or basket- ball team wins. Their pride is heard in the phrase, We are the pythons ; but most of all, their pride can be seen whenever our teams lose. The students never give up faithfulness to their school and are still proud to say I'm from Neshannock. To sum up Neshannock's students, only one word is needed; class. Neshan- nock is based on ways than one. 6 Often you hear people say there isn't anything to do around here! Well by looking around Neshannock, you can find many interesting things you could do. For instance, if your into school spirit, you could paint your face red and white, or even dress up in clothes that show your spirit. If that isn't your bag, how about working in the shop or in the com- puter room. And when all else fails, you could get the key and talk to your brother (if he's avail- able) or just get together with your friends. News From Neshannock Some interesting things hap- pened at Neshannock this year. Togas were the thing during Se- nior Week, the first time they were allowed during school. At homecoming, girls were behind the wheels of the cars for the first time. And We Are The Pythons rang out from the gym as the Bas- ketball team won its way to the playoffs. 8 HOME ; VISITOR Jeff Staph, the 1985 Mock Homecoming Queen, escourted by Nick Manolis Mock Homecoming On Friday, September 27, during the Homecom- ing Pep Assembly, Ne- shannock crowned a queen of a different sort. With great fanfare and hoopla, Neshannock High School held its third annu- al Mock Homecoming contest featuring raving beauties from the senior class. There were many ex- cellent choices, includ- ing Rocky and Adrian as well as other inter- esting” characters. The competition was tough, but the fans at the pep assembly had to make a choice. And the winner was Jeff Staph, with his escort Nick Manolis. May your reign be long and happy!?!” Mark Dewberry and Jamie Lambo Larry Doran and David Moses Eric Sommerfeld and Mike Eric Richards, Rich Canciello and Jim Fisher DeSantis Todd Nicholson and Mike 9 Ambuster Neshannock's Musical 'Kiss Me, Kate Shakespeare? In 1985? Believe it or not, it's true! In our 1985 musical Kiss Me, Kate, Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew mod- ernized with music, dancing, lights, and singing, was brought to Neshannock's stage on April 17, 19, and 20, 1985. The Cole Porter production was directed by Mr. Don Frediani. Set in the present, it is the story of a Broadway troupe putting on a production of the Taming of the Shrew with the shrew presenting a parallel plot to the romantic difficulties of director Fred Gra- ham (Lee Altman) and his star (graduate Tara Vinton). Other members of the cast included Eric Richards, Jennifer DuVall, Dean Morini, Jeff Marcella, Allison Fortner, Dave Rispoli, Mike Mastrian, Greg Alexander, Dave Sloat, Dave Patterson, and John DeSilvestri. Mr. Lou D'Angelo directed the members of the show chorus, which included mem- bers of the choir who were not in starring roles. While they were not the leading parts in the play, the musical could not have gone on without their backing. Mr. Tom Schaffner directed the always excellant orchestra through a difficult score. While the orchestra gets little atten- tion for their work, it must be noted that the members must be at their best because the leads in the play need their backing. And finally, it must be noted that the dancers for the musical this past year went it alone without the help of an adult choreographer. Special commenda- tions go out to Stephanie Pazzo, Amy Isi- dro, and Kelli Ludovici. Left: The chorus in the limelight. Below left: The dancers await their turn to hit the stage. A beach, 95 degree weather, and a bright shining sun? That was Joe and Todd's idea of fun for prom night. Attired in Hawai- ian clothing complete with sun glasses and beach chairs, they enjoyed good music and basting in the sun . It was a night of glamour and enchant- ment with music provided by Entertain- ment Co. Thanks goes out to all who let our imaginations run wild. 12 13 Homecoming 1985 Football weather had finally arrived-just in time for Homecoming 1985. It was the first time in N.H.S. history that girls had the priveledge of driving in homecoming and the class of '86 made it happen. Amy Fox, Stephanie Pazzo, and Bonnie Wajler were the three girls chosen as candidates for the crown. Their escorts were Jay Vitale, Don- ald Colucci, and Nick Kolovos. With nerves on end, the weather gave an added chill as they were escorted across the field to their positions. The drum roll began and beat almost as loud as the girls hearts. Mr. Frediani read the lucky can- didates name. Tears streamed down Ste- phanie's face as Student Council President David Wilson crowned her queen. The evening ended with another big vic- tory-that of the football team with a win over previously undefeated Mohawk, 6-0. The culmi- nation of the day was the Senior Pep Assembly. This was the last football pep rally, and was un- doubtedly one of the best of the year. The football players took on the cheerleaders in a tug-of-war. Since the outcome was undecided (come on now girls, did they really cheat?), a member of each team re- ceived a small token of the oth- ers esteem: a pie in the face. Everything was taken in fun and the seniors got that little something extra they needed for the game that night. Jeff Staph wipes pie from his face while Don Colucci readies the crowd for the next victim. Senior Night Football After a super senior week, the football team, band, auxilliary corps and cheerleaders were honored prior to the final home game. The week culminated with a romp over Mercer that sent everyone home with a smile. 'Nick Manolis, son of Eric with his brother and mother. Senior cheerleader Amy Isidro. 19 Senior Ploy ' 'Ghostess With Mostess The Class of 1986 presented its Senior Play on Saturday, De- cember 14, a comedy entitled Ghostess With the Mostess. A very funny play with plenty of surprises, it was an off-Broadway success, and after seeing the seniors performance, you could see why. The play revolved around a new factory, built on the spot where an occurance involving the deaths of three military men and one woman, the owner of the house, took place during the revolutionary war. The new factory has problems when strange things start to happen. Then, when people start to see ghosts, the fun begins. While it is a comedy, the play also teach- es a lesson in understanding your friends and your enemies. Amy Lytle, Jill Turner, and Charlene Wasser- man played their final home game that evening. And though the team put forth their best ef- fort, the girls lost to the lady Steelers, 65-24 to somewhat dampen spirits. Boys 'sSenior Night On Friday, February 14, Ne- shannock honored the 7 seniors who participated in the Boy's Basketball season from the team and the cheerleaders. Don Colucci, Todd Nicholson, Nick Kolovos, and Dave Wilson played in their final home game and Amy Isidro, Stephanie Pazzo, and Bonnie Wajler cheered one last time before the home crowd. Varsity Football 1985 was the year of the streak for the Neshannock Lancer football squad as the team wound up with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses. The year started out on a sour note, with a 49-0 loss at the hands of a powerful Freeport team, which went on to post an undefeated regular season record. Week number two brought with it loss number two, a 8-7 heart- breaker to Meadville. The Neshannock de- fense was taxed all night by the powerful running game of Meadville, but held a 7-2 lead until about midway through the 4th quarter when Meadville's halfback broke a long touchdown run to win the game. The next two weeks brought losses to league ri- vals West Middlesex 28-12 and Laurel 7-0, in a game the Lancers should have won. The out- look for the rest of the season looked so gloom with 4 strong teams left on the schedule. But the Lancers began their second streak of the season with a 6-0 Homecoming victory over previously unbeaten Mohawk. Todd Nicholson's touchdown run proved to be the winner for Neshannock. Jeff Demofonte pro- vided the winning margin the next week against previously once beaten Wilmington in an exciting 9-6 victory. The Lancers then posted three more victories, totally dominat- ing Slippery Rock 14-0, Union 13-0, and Mer- cer 29-7. The Lancers playoff hopes were decided on the Friday before the Shenango game and Shenango was in a must win situa- tion. The final score: 26-0 Shenango in the rain. While the season was not a total success, there were some standout performances by many of the Lancers. And with the reliance on underclassmen during the past year at many key positions, football's future is bright for next season. Seniors: Row 1 - E. Richards, J. Staph, R. Canciello, M. Moses. The 1985 Golf team, headed by coach Dennis Marburger and by se- niors Joe DeLuca and Craig Prokop- chak, had an excellent season this year, finishing just out of the playoff picture. The Lancer golfers were in the hunt until the final match, where they lost to New Castle in a tough match. The talent was there for a better year, but poor rounds in the tough matches proved to be the downfall of the team. However, much experience was gained and with the majority of the team back next year, the team should once again be in the running for a section championship. Under the supervision of coach Chris Navarra, the girls put up an excellent fight this past season. They upped their record to 3-8 giving most of the other teams a good scare. The team will gradu- ate four returning lettermen, Su- san Barber, Kris Barkley, Leslie Kaba, and Lori Wagner. Next year, a strong JV team, 7-4, will return to become the varsity team along with the jr. varsity players. For varsity, Paula Woulf was named most valuable player and for JV, Ann Higgans. Seniors: Susan Barber, Kris Barkley, Coach Navarra, Leslie Kaba, Lori Wagner Girls Cross Country The Girls Cross Country once again had a terrific year for coach Chuck Travers. The girls were undefeated in dual meets this year, placed high in all invi- tational meets, and won the Tri- County championship again. Three girls placed in the W.P.I.A.L. meet and attended the state meet, though the team did not qualify. Stephanie Wasserman finished 1st in the meet and 41st in the state meet. Beth Barker finished 2nd in the meet and 27th in the state meet. Ann Daugherty also quali- fied with a 6th place finish and was 32nd in the state meet. Front: T. Bartberger, A. Daugherty, N. The girls finished the regular season undefeated. The team was led by seniors Lucy Balph, Margaret Blewett, Amy Lytle, and Melissa Santia. The under- class team members did very well throughout the season as well. While the girls did not win the W.P.I.A.L. championship, they had a year they can be proud of. 1 4 Lucy Balph serves. Coach Mike Fisher had very little size to work with and injuries hampered the team all year. Hopefully, these young Lancers will not be discour- aged by their poor showing record- wise because they did show some improvement as the year pro- gressed, and some talent was evi- dent in many of the players. The highlight of the season was Greg Walzer's 63 yard touchdown run in the final game. Coaches: Mr. Fisher, Mr. McAndrew 35 Basketball Varsity: R. LaRocco, E. Covert, B. Fazzone, M. Pakovitch, D. Colucci, B. Kwait, N. Kolovos, T. Nicholson, T. Jay, D. Wilson, Coach Jim Smiley. The 1985-86 Varsity Basketball team finished its season as W.P.I.A.L. Class AA runner-up, P.I.A.A. Playoff Participants, and finished with a 20 win 6 loss season, the best in Neshannock history. The Lancers finished 2nd in their section with a 9-3 record. The season included tough losses to Mohawk and Shenago, and some big wins over Wilmington and Shenago. The 2nd place finish qualified them for the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs where they disposed of 2nd ranked Sprindale 44-40 in double-overtime, Quaker Valley 52-51, and highly touted Albert Galletin 70-67 before run- ning into a brick wall in the final, losing to high powered Washington High 90-67. They then played in the PIAA state playoffs, defeating a tough Connemaugh Valley 70-63, then losing to Rochester 63-54. Congratulations guys on a fantastic year, giving us excitement we never had before at NHS! Junior Varisty: Row 1 - S. Griffiths, A. Patel, L. Altman, D. Kirol. Row 2 - T. Reed, B. Grotefend, V. After the successes of the past few years, this year's girl's basketball team may have been a disappointment to some, but after the gradua- tion of two of the best players in school history, rebuilding seemed inevitable. While the team tried hard and played to the best of their ability, youth and an overall lack of experience and size cost the team dearly in wins and losses. Seniors Amy Lytle, Jill Turner, and Charlene Wasserman were the only players with varsity experience, but other underclass team mem- bers got plenty of playing time and experi- ence. Hopefully, next year will bring a turn around in the fortunes of the team. J.V. - T. Richards, K Blewett. 38 Scenes From The Court Page 40 Top left: Amy Lytle drives for 2. Coach Curry had to rely on underclassmen to come through for him last year, and come through they did, reaching the W.P.I.A.L. play- offs. Pitching was the key to the squad this year, and after an extremly slow start, the pitching and timely hitting carried the squad to victory time and again during the second half of the season. Though they lost in the first round of the playoffs, many fine performances were turned in and since most of the team will return, baseball looks like a bright spot on the sports scene. ' Boys Tennis Phil Bretton shows his form while Craig Prokopchak looks on. Jay Vitale returns a serve. The tennis team, under the direction of coach Bob Brown, had a very good year, winning the section crown against some tough competition. Though they lost in the first round of the W.P.I.A.L playoffs, some top notch performances were turned in by some of the players. Coach Brown is looking forward to the 1986 season as the team returns just about intact. Front: Coach Brown, E. Martin, A. Matteo. C. Dess. Back: M. Fisher. P. Ong, E. Sommerfeld. J. Vitale, C. Both teams reached the W.P.I.A.L. team playoffs, with the girls losing by one point to Mars and the boys losing to eventual cham- pion Beaver Falls. Graduate Tammy Sankey was the only girl to represent Neshannock in the state meet, while the boys 1600 meter relay team qualified for the meet. The boys 1600 meter relay team. The 1986 version of the LANCE Staff was only somewhat experienced, with the majority of members being juniors. But, while they were inexperienced, they were very hard working, often giving up after school hours and vacation days to complete deadlines. Editor Patty Cic- ero was the only senior with three years of ex- perience on the staff and handled her job very well, as you can see by the book. While a yearbook looks easy to put together, it isn't; just ask anyone who really put some time into this year's book. It all begins with ad sales, then yearbook sales in homeroom, then work- ing on deadlines; all so you can read about the past year. And don't think that getting those pictures is easy. So often it is impossible to get great candids that it can become frustrating. So, thank your friendly LANCE Staffer, be- cause they really do a lot so that you can enjoy your yearbook. 50 Editor Patty Cicero Homeroom Representatives: Row 1 - S. Casalandra, M. Walzer, R. Conti. The Class of 1986 had that statement placed on them many times throughout their highschool days at Neshannock. One thing differs about this class, though. This class was different from others, and made those dif- ferences known throughout the year. To say that this was a class without its clicks would be an outright lie, but without a doubt, this is the closest group of stu- dents to canvas the halls of Ne- shannock in a long time. The “in thing was to be friends with ev- erybody and, together, be differ- ent from the rest of the world. And seldom has a class been quite as involved with the school as we were. We truly cared about the school because it was a part of our lives. The closeness we developed is special one filled with memories and experiences we will never forget. Let us not forget what made these times so special for each one of us - each other. Top - The Class Officers: Rich Canciello. Vice President. Bonnie Wajler. Treasurer. David Sloat. But its value is far greater than a mountain made of gold- For gold is cold and lifeless, it can neither see nor hear. And in the time of trouble it is powerless to cheer- It has no ears to listen, no heart to understand. It cannot bring you comfort or reachout a helping hand- So when you ask God of a Gift, be thankful if He sends. Not diamonds, pearls or riches, but the love of a real true friend. She was usually shy, but when provoked, Julie became forceful and out- spoken. She was always able to make people laugh, and both teachers and students loved her. In 1982, Julie fell victim to osteogenic sarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Through two years, we watched her suffer through a leg amputation, che- motherapy treatments, and numberous lung operations. She proved that she was stronger than most by maintaining her own beautiful character. We lost a very special person when Julie died in 1984. Mr. Robert Brown Math Physics Miss Rose Bullano Reading Mr. Louis D'Angelo Choir 117 English English is very important in life and Neshannock's teachers make sure we receive a good education in this field of learn- ing. Reading, writing, and speech are the basic compo- nents of the English curriculm. A wide variety of literature is read so that students recieve difer- ent outlooks on the world. With the teacher's help, students master the skill of reading with comprehension, understanding, and critical insight. Good writing form is a necessity in our world today. The students are taught writing skills that better their vo- cabulary and technics. Speech is also important since students learn how to communicate ver- bally to a group of people. Science Science is a challenging course at any school, but no school makes it as fun and in- volving as Neshannock. Stu- dents learn the principles of sci- ence through inquiring, inves- tigating, and experimenting. The students emerge from the small cubicle” of basics to practicality and usefulness of this field. They learn the fun- tions” of certain scientific prob- lems and how to apply them. Because of the variety of sci- ence courses offered at Ne- shannock, students have found that life is good.” Mathematics Math at Neshannock plays an important role in the curriculum. Our math courses, ranging from general math, to Calculus, to Business Math, offer students a variety of math to choose from. They all encourage the students to ask themselves, Self, how can we use this later in life? , and the courses provide answers. Each teacher has his or her own special way of teaching, whether it be through outside help, such as Esther or by se- cretly testing the students to see if they catch the teachers mistake. No matter what tactics they use, the outstanding teachers here at Neshannock point the students in the right di- rection for life. Mr. William Hoffman Chemistry Mrs. Jennifer Holden Guidance Mrs. Eleanor Getchy 120 Science Mr. Dale Hoover Social Studies Social Studies A wide variety of social stud- ies courses are offered at N.H.S. The two that are stressed the most are World Culture and American History. All of the de- partment's courses are very beneficial in that they teach the students a wide variety of things, such as politics, the work- ings of different governments, history - down to the nitty-gritty, and current events. History is an important part of everybody's life. It made us what we are today and will ef- fect us and others still to come in the future. We learn so much from history: our heritage, our struggle to become a free na- tion, and the ever present strug- gle for peace. The most important factor of life is to achieve peace by learning and improving history. The teachers at N.H.S. have taught the stu- dents history and now they can put their knowledge toward the dream of peace by making it a reality. Mr. Joseph Kaba Music Mrs. Pauline Jackson Business Miss Kathy Kearney Special Ed. Mrs. Goldie Koenig Home Ec. Computer Literacy Students begin computer education in the elementary school. Beginning this year, students in grades seven and eight continue their computer learn- ing. Computer Literacy for these grades centers around classroom ac- tivity with some hands-on work. The object is to gain back round informa- tion about the computer, how it works, how it affects society, and how it will affect the future. Beginning next year, eighth grade students will use an inte- grated software package to gain knowledge in the use of word and data processing, electronic budget- ing, and computer graphics program- ming. At no time during these courses is formal computer programming taught. Students in the upper grade levels may wish to further their computer education along with their math. Com- puter Programming is offered along with Elementary Functions for these students. In this course, students are taught BASIC programming and word processing. This is a rigorous course de- manding much extra time in order to complete assignments. Neshannock is proud of its computer program and is determined to make an effort to teach evey student some- thing about the computer. Mr. Charles King Social Studies Mr. Robert Kolitsky Science Driver's Ed. Mrs. Lois Koprivnak Math Mr. Duane Lucas Social Studies Driver's Ed. Special Education and Teacher Assistants An outstanding Special Edu- cation program is provided by the school for students with spe- cial educational needs. This de- partment helps students who lack certain skills in different ar- eas. The program at N.H.S. en- sures that every student re- ceives a good education. A Teacher's Assistant pro- gram is also offered for stu- dents. Some of the school's se- niors, under the supervision of Miss McCullough and Mrs. Sny- der, help students in different classes in which they have problems. Mr. Dennis Marburger English Mr. Patrick Me Andrew Art Miss Margaret McCullough Chapter I Coordinator Mr. William Miller Math Foreign Language The foreign language depart- ment offers a study of three dif- ferent languages. They are French, taught by Mrs. Freder- ick; Latin, taught by Mr. Ven- asco; and Spanish, taught by Mr. DeFelice. Vocabulary and basic sen- tence structures are taught to first year students. As the stu- dents advance through the four offered levels of language, their knowledge increases with the class's progression toward the more difficult inner workings of the language: conjugation of verbs, reading, writing and speaking, and learning idioms and grammar rules. The lan- guages that are taught help students with their own vocabu- lary, further college studies, and their possible interaction with other nations. Business Education For those students who like the business aspect of life rather than the academic, N.H.S. pro- vides a number of business and vocational courses. These in- clude; typing, shorthand, ac- counting, and the up to date business equipment. The stu- dents learn discipline as well as business skills. The seniors who wish to main- tain their working status and re- main in school can become members of the Cooperative Education program. This pro- gram provides the students with the courses necessary to gra- duate and time to keep their usual working hours. Mrs. Patricia Rowland Guidance Mr. John Salmon Math Science Mrs. Laurie Schaffner Business Mr. Thomas Schaffner Music tH' Guidance An often misunderstood, but important part of our school is the Guidance Department. The two councelors at Neshannock are kept busy much of the year with different responsibilities. Mrs. Pat Rowland is the Junior High councelor. Among her re- sponsibilities are keeping track of students who are having diffi- culties in their studies, recom- mending students for advanced courses, and administering tests. She also teaches a Careers course to seventh and eighth grade students, in which is dis- cussed various career opportu- nities and the training necessary for these careers. Mrs Jennifer Holden is the High School councelor. She often can be seen speaking to stu- dents about colleges and ca- reers. She also sets up college meetings for students and helps in the college application pro- cess. Very often, it is Mrs. Holden that helps a student understand what is necessary for college admission and that all important financial aid. Mr. Claude Stewart Industrial Arts Mr. Susan Stolpe English Mr. Joseph Thomas Business Mr. Charles Travers Phys. Ed. Health and Driver's Education Physical Education, more commonly referred to as gym, is a requirement for all grades. Not only is gym a means of giving students some exercise, but it also teaches them sportsman- ship, how to follow rules and di- rections, and most of all - how to play as a team. Therefore, one can easily see that gym consists of both physical and mental exercise. Health is an important class. It teaches the students more about their own physical health. Different diseases, are discussed along with ways students can improve their own health. Even- tually, C.P.R. is taught - which can obviously save lives. Driver's Education is taught to sophomores who are turning 16 years of age and will soon be acquiring driver's licences. This class teaches everything from laws to insurance needs, which are discussed in the classroom. The students are also advised to venture out on the roads, in the school's cars, where they will learn how to drive safely. Fine Arts The industrial arts department includes wood and metal shops, and mechanical drawing. Stu- dents learn how to use various power tools in the shops, and learn what goes into designs in the classes. The music department in- cludes a chorus, band and also general music, only 7th and 8th graders are offered the later course. The students can further their music studies through be- coming a member of the choir or one of the various band groups. The two are combined through the annual perfor- mance of the school musical. This year art has become a more advanced class. Students apply themselves to different facets of art under the influence of the advisor, Mr. McAndrew. Home Economics teaches stu- dents cooking, sewing, a healthy diet plan, and how to- manage a home. Students learn how to prepare meals and also how to make their own clothing. L. Fuchs, M. Reed, A.
