LANCE Neshannock High School 301 Mitchell Road New Castle Pennsylvania Volume XI To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow. To run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong, To love pure and chaste from afar, To try when your arms are too weary, to reach the unreachable star! This is my quest, to follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far; To fight for the right without question or pause, To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause! And I know, if I'll only be true to this glorious quest. That may heart will lie peaceful and calm, When I'm laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this; That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage. To reach the unreachable stars. In Memory of Robert D. Stevenson 4 Members of National Honor Society prepare letters for the Robert D. Stevenson Scholarship Foundation. It is a difficult task for us, the Editors of the Lance, to find the words to express the feelings of all of us towards our former principal, the late Robert D. Stevenson. The loss of his guidance and inspiration has been felt at Neshannock. Mr. Stevenson's dedication to his stu- dents had been intense; almost his entire career had been devoted to Neshannock. Beginning as a teacher and later becoming the principal; he had always placed the greatest emphasis on his job. His enthu- siasm was outstanding. He had an active interest in all our school activities and was an enthusiastic supporter of all the Nes- hannock teams. As their special tribute to Mr. Steven- son, the Happenings of '69 have donated an oil portrait which has been placed in the library. A scholarship fund has also been established in his name. Here in the '70 Lance, we dedicate this memorial as our part in establishing the eternal memory of Robert D. Stevenson in Neshannock High School. 5 Activities................ Welcomes Swedish Influence Nina Nelson, this year's ex- change student, has come to Neshannock from Sweden and is residing with the Leroy Weiner family. In comparing our schools with those in Sweden, Nina has found that American schools have more activities and more competition in sports. She also related that there are no cheerleaders in Sweden. When asked what she likes best about the United States Nina says, The people-they are very friendly. 17 The short lunch period is Nina’s only complaint. “Casino Royale : Seniors’ Last Class Party Neal Samuels and Sue Dickson enjoy a party. A glimpse of Ken Burnside Clubs, hearts, spades, and diamonds decorated the room, and strings of cards hung from the ceiling. For one night, February 21, the lobby was transformed into Casino Royale, the last class party the Dimensions would have. Complete with murals, a slot machine. Tiffany lamps, music by The Outsiders, and all the other accessories, the scene was one to remember. One of the most original ideas was a dollar bill with a caricature of Mr. Lucas in the place of George Washington. It was an enjoyable evening for all and one that the class would not soon forget. 18 Elaine Mooney entertains with a song. Juniors Hold an “Arabian Night” Imagine yourself in ancient Persia where Ali Baba and Sinbad were heroes. This is what the Juniors did when they held Arabian Nights . Entertained by the Suthern Comfort, the Cartesians en- joyed an evening in a true oasis. Nancy Micco and Ed Halusic groove to the sounds of the Suthern Comfort. 19 Conversing with their dates are Doug Spiker and Scott Kerr. Fog Alters Homecoming Tradition Senior Class President, John Love escorts Cathy Karlin, flower girl, and Doug Grauel, crown bearer, through the fog. White mist rolled over the ground completely covering the muddy field. Shining their brightest, the spotlights looked like large glaring eyes staring at players and crowd alike. Never before had such scenery been the stage for Neshannock's Homecoming. The inclement weather, however, cast no damper on the crowd's spirits as they anxiously awaited the half time activities. While the ball passed from team to team, the minutes slipped away. Soon the announcement rang out. Due to the fog we will have to abandon the traditional procession. For the first time in Neshannock's history, the queen candidates and the court were escorted down the new all-weather track. Silence fell as thick as the fog when the long anticipated moment arrived. Neshannock's Home- coming Queen for the year 1969 is Miss—Sue Minner! Startled, Sue, received her royal bouquet amid loud and happy applause. When the activities were over. Sue, followed by her court took her place on the bleachers to view the rest of the game. Just as it had drifted in, the fog began to lift as if it had been there only for the ceremony. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. Thus begins Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, a poem by Robert Frost and the theme for the 1969 Christmas Dance held in the cafeteria on December 30. The snowy evening began at eight o'clock and continued through the sounds of the Suthern Com- fort, the crowning of the queen, and on to eleven o'clock, when the evening came to a close. A beaming Carmie Zona is crowned Snow Ball Queen by last year's queen Debi Cotton. 22 Snowy Evening” Kim Earl and Monte Case enjoying the Yuletide. Nettie McClure and Ray Maslyk pose for a picture. Sparkling blue stars dangled from the ceiling. Tiny streets such as la Rue de Dimension were lined with shops and sidewalk cafes covered with red and white awnings. This true Parisian Evening was the Junior-Senior Prom held on May 16th in the cafeteria. Entertained by the Graduates, couples strolled along the French Rues and had pictures taken in front of the Arc de Triomphe. As the evening came to a close, everyone sadly departed under a rose-covered trellis in hopes of returning again someday. Sycamore Street was thrown into an uproar. Mr. and Mrs. Morrison (Don Wallace and Sue Wilder) and Mr. and Mrs. Hayes (Mike Sugarman and Wendi Hile- man) became the nucleus of the conflict. All but Mr. Sugarman were against the unwanted Blakes (Scott Kerr and Patty Walzer). His conflict was with himself. Roger and Chris Morrison (Bruno DiGeorgi and Hadden Blair) and Carolyn Hayes (Amy Hoye) were friends of Judy Blake (Marilou Augustine). With its dramatic climax and great acting Thunder on Sycamore Street has proved to be one of the greatest Mr. King has produced. In a dramatic moment in the play. Mr. and Mrs. Blake face the mob. Mrs. Blake finds it difficult to get along with her daughter Carolyn and often argues with her mother Mrs. Harkness (Karen Cooley). 25 Amy Hoye cheers Sir Dinadan on in the joust scene. “The castle shall be mine! shouts the villainous Mordred. Guenivere admires King Pellinore's dog Horrid. “A Wisp of Glory . . For two evenings, the stage turned into a majestic palace, a dark, lurking forest, the warm Spring days, as the Choral and Band Departments pre- sented Camelot. With Paul Kwait as Arthur, Cheryl Hadlock as Guenivere, and Bill Kemp as King Pellinore, many memorable pictures were created. In various supporting roles were Dan Booth as Mordred, Jeff Marlin as Merlyn, and Snowball as Pellinore's faithful companion Horrid. Sandra Bartberger is enrolled in N.H.S.'s Chemistry class. Many of us remember Maria Pallares, our exchange student from Brazil in 1965. This year, Maria's sister who is also named Maria, is attending N.H.S. Highlighted by her four hour stop in Kennedy Airport where she knew no one and could only say How are you? in English, her experiences have proved to be both frightening and rewarding. 34 Student Council: Voice of the Students Students working on paperback book sales for student council. Conservation Club Geology Club Conservation Club is composed of students who are truly concerned with problems facing the nation today such as air and water pollution. In their meetings they discuss the causes of these problems and what they can do about them. One of the most colorful clubs at N.H.S. is the Antiquities Club composed of students who are interested in collecting and restoring military relics. The highlight of their activities is the annual reinactment of the Battle at Fort Ligonier in which many of the members take part. In an effort to make students more aware of the geological features of our area. Geology Club was formed. Under the direction of Mr. Hoover, the club has discovered many in- teresting rock formations. Spanish Honor Society, under the direction of Mr. DeFelice, and Spanish Club, under Mrs. Walters, stimulate an interest in the Spanish language and help to improve the mem- bers' fluency. Students with great ability in French comprise the French club. All meetings and special events are conducted in French, giving students an excellent opportunity to use the French language and learn about the country of France. National Honor Society runs probably the most important activity for the benefit of the students. In its study-aid pro- gram, members help those having difficulty in a subject, providing a worthwhile ex- perience for both aide and student. Math Honor Society studies the use of math and works with situations involving this usage. It also works with the com- puter. Spanish Club-Advisor: Mrs. Walters. J. Donovan; T. Donovan; S. Kerr; S. Students planning a career in nursing have an excellent opportunity to become better acquainted with certain areas of their chosen field through their activities in Future Nutures of America. This year was highlighted by a tour of the Nursing Dept. of Duquesne University in Pitts- burgh. Business Club, the club for students interested in ad- vancing their understanding of the business world, is spon- sored by Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Jackson. The main event of the year was a field trip to Pittsburgh where the club toured the Pittsburgh Press, Mellon Bank, and Kaufman's. Even though the club has been organized for only two years, it is already affiliated with the Future Business Leaders of America. Business Club-Advisors: Mrs. Jackson and Mr. Thomas. N. Attaway; L. Y-Teens is divided into three groups, seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. They plan social events, have bake sales to raise money and a fashion show each year. Bowling Club is one in which anyone willing, athletic or not, can join others in a bi-weekly league. Also, there is a faculty team in stiff competition with the participants. As colorful teams fiercely work against each other, the club is a strong school organization. With a fantastic season exceeded only by that of Cross Country, the Bowling Team has done an extraordinary job in its first year of existence. Meeting on Sunday afternoons, the team plays other schools and has grown rapidly to include a junior varsity. Bowling Club-Advisor: Miss Lewis. N. Attaway; M. Berrigan; D. Braatz; S. Brest; D. Sparked by senior Jack Cameron, who placed fourth in the state meet, the Lancers compiled an undefeated season. Running daily up hills, over fields, and down the township's roads, each member strives toward victory for the team. The newest school sport proved to be the most successful. Junior Alan Saqinak finishes to hetp spark the Lancer runners toward a win 66 67 Track Team Takes Tri-County The trackless track team not only won tri-county but also set many new school records. The 880 yard relay team set a record at the WPIAL meet and Phil Hoye, shown on the preceding page, was strong in the 100 yard dash. Jack Cameron took second place in the mile run and Ken White and Rich Chamberlain set records in the shot putt. Pole vaulter Rick Palumbo came near the record many times. With the spirit of this season and their own track, next year's team will be hard to beat. An exhausted Andy Strauss and Dan Booth take a breather after a relay race. 69 On the way to victory. The Mystery Solved Beginning with those first frightening days of high school, Neshannock Lancers have been continually in search of that infamous elevator that N.H.S. supposedly contains. Over the years the mystery has remained. Is there truly an elevator here or not? we have asked. Well, some ambitious senior has finally found the answer to this question. Be it far from us, however, to disclose this information and ruin such a controversial issue. We, the Dimensions of '70, leave it up to the new se- niors that will follow us to solve the mystery for themselves. But please don't pass it on. .. What goes up must come down. 171 And now we leave Neshannock .. . Our past behind, our future in front. .. We have set our goals . . . We'll carry our dreams beyond N.H.S. and into the world
