OFFICERS OF THE CLASS OF 1961: Dwiglit Racioppo, treasurer; Karen Ward, secretary; J. B. Heess, vice-president; Nita Thellman, historian; William Carlson, president. SATELLITE LOG The Senior Class of 1961 has truly gone “Around the World” in its own way. We attended the Waltno and Clen-Moore elementary schools for the first six years of our education. As seventh-graders, we attended the Oak Street school building. It was during this year that it was announced that an elementary and a high school were to be built on Mitchel Road. We are proud to have been the first class to spend all twelve years in Neshannock Township school buildings. In September of 1956 and as eighth-graders, we proudly accepted the Neshannock Memorial building. This was the first year that the school sponsored both a football and a basketball team. In April of 1957 we held our first social function, the “Eighth Grade Party.” 28

The “Satellites of ’61” acknowledge, with deep appreciation, the assistance of our homeroom teachers: Mr. Jess Toth, Mr. Donald Frediani, and Mr. John Peterson. They have been counselors, understanding friends, and inspiring leaders. They have been firm, when necessary, to help mold our lives so that we might be a true credit to our school. They have given unstintingly of their time in order to make our years productive, useful, and pleasant. As Freshmen we elected officers and chose our class colors—medium blue and white. Miss Verna Wilfert was appointed our class advisor. Ninth grade at Memorial began to see more activities. In the spring the first school play, “What A Life,7 was presented. We all enjoyed our “Ninth Grade Prom ’ which was held in May. The school term 1958-1959 found us going to school on half-day sessions. However, we considered ourselves lucky because of the free afternoons. The Ienth Grade Party was held on April 3, 1959 in the Memorial gym. On May 15 the Junior- Sophomore play “Beauty and the Beef” was presented. On September 1, 1959, our class, as Juniors, moved proudly into the new high school. In October of 1959 the Junior Party was held. We danced under the beautiful colored lights in the lobby. On April 8, 1960 “Girl Crazy” was presented by the senior high school. We were the first class to honor the graduating Seniors at our “Junior Prom” on May 13, 1960. The gym was decorated in a Medieval motif. Spring of our Junior year also saw another first. It was the newly-organized golf team. In May, the Senior Class Officers were announced as follows: President, William Carlson; Vice-President. J. B. Heess; Secretary, Karen Ward: Treasurer, Dwight Racioppo; Historian. Nita Thellman. We began our Senior year on September 7, 1960. The staff of the 1961 Lance was chosen: Kay Kirk and Nita Thellman were to serve as Co-Editors; Judy Mc- Burney was to be the Copy Editor; Business Managers—Pearl Shelenberger, Karen Patterson; Advertising—Ralph Cicerone, Craig Mooney; Circulation—J. B. Heess, Rusty Snelling. As Seniors, we served as guides on November 15 when the high school was open for inspection. On December 5, 1960, we held our first big social event of the year for Seniors and their guests. It was a Senior Class Party, held in the lobby. The decorations followed the class colors. The Senior Class Play, “Come Over to Our House,” was presented on March 24, 1960. This was the first play to be presented entirely by Seniors. The Junior Class honored the Seniors at a Prom on May 12. The high school gym was decorated beautifully, the theme being “Around the World.” The first week of June was a busy one for us. On June 1 wre held the biggest social event of our high school days, our Dinner Dance. Our Baccalaureate Service w'as Sunday, June 4. On June 6, we presented our impressions of many school activities under the heading of a Class Day Program. The Senior Class Picnic took place on June 7. Commencement, on the eighth of June, marked the end of our twelve years of basic education and the beginning of a new era for us. 29
