VOLUME TWO Published by the Graduating CLASS of 1961 Neshannock High School I ew Castle, Pennsylvania •vV' ••W ? Lf. • I FOREWORD We, the second graduating class of Neshan- nock High School, have soared breathlessly through these twelve short years of education. Within the covers of this book, The 1961 Lance, we have recorded the achievements and pleasures of our class. 2 THEME We, the Class of 1961, invite you to take a trip around our world. You will visit our Paris and our Rome. You will see our accomplish- ments as well as our activities. Come with us as we travel around our world. TABLE OF UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIOR HIGH CONTENTS MUSIC SENIOR ACTIVITIES DEDICATION To a man who has spent a lifetime serving the youth of Neshannock, To a man who has given unselfishly of himself with no thought of personal gain. To a person who continually takes pride in our school and thereby sets high standards for us, To a man who has seen us grow through the years, We affectionately dedicate the Lance of 1961 to Mr. Nelson J. McCluskey. ■ administration; MRS. MILDRED SCANLON Secretary MRS. FLORENCE DRIPPS Secretary I congratulate you, the Class of 1961, upon the completion of your work at Neshannock High School. My hope is that you have acquired sufficient knowledge and experience to he of some value to you. I hope you have developed work habits and ideals which will enable you to contribute to your own welfare and the welfare of others with whom you come in contact. Your education is the key to your economic growth, to your social growth and to your continued freedom. I trust that you have acquired the elementary groundwork which will enable you to choose wisely the many alternatives you will face. THOMAS P. SMATHERS MR. THOMAS P. SMATHERS Supervising Principal The memory of Graduation is some- thing every senior will carry with him throughout his entire life. As your high school days come to an end you must realize that the friends you have made and the things you have done are now a pail of the past. You must look to a whole new world that lies ahead, the world of the future. We can no longer go through life secure in the belief that most of the things we learned in school are still accepted as true by our fellow- men. If we are not too bound by what we ourselves have learned, we can help create new knowledge, new concepts, new ways of looking at old facts. WILLIAM WALLACE High School Principal MRS. JANET M. It seems that it was only yesterday that a group of wide-eyed and anxious seventh graders walked into the old Oak Street School. Perhaps those who were more anxious and, perhaps even a little nervous, were the teachers; those who appear most confident at all times. Since the Oak Street days, our high school faculty has grown to an amazing number of 40. They came to school rain or shine. They put up with our grim faces and our “major” problems. Besides a well rounded knowledge of “leadin’, writin’, and ’rithmetic,” they have tried to prepare us for the problems that are waiting for us out in a hard new world. Our teachers are dedicated people. They have put their whole hearts into their profession. A teacher once said, “My classroom is my kingdom.” He said, “I insist that the classroom is my province, so long as my competency is acceptable, I am the expert in the classroom.” Here is the dignity that our teachers possess—human dignity, along with professional pride. We, the Class of ’61, may never be able to repay you, but your talents and shining faces will always be remembered. Thank you all, so very much. 19 RICHARD S. MARQUIS WILLIAM HAINES B. J. HANLON WALTER A. KIELER School Board Solicitor FLORENCE M. DRIPPS School Board Secretary 20 JOSEPH D. FLETCHER Vice-President D. C. MYLER President NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP BOARD OF EDUCATION We express our deep appreciation to the Ne- shannock Township School Board for the time they have spent in our behalf for the past twelve years. Our fine school building will long serve as a reminder of these men who have worked to make Neshannock High School one of the best. OUR ABLE CAFETERIA STAFF: Hilda Henks, Phoebe Swadener, Peg Boyd, Helen Dunkle, Mary Homzuk, Norma Varley. A familiar figure at our basketball and football games: Minnie Kare, Deputy Constable. 23 Mr. Joseph Biddle, one of the seven capable Ncshannock High School custodians. Mr. Nelson J. McCluskey, Superintendent of the Building. I To You, Miss Verna Wilfert, our class advisor, we say “thank you-’ for the help and guidance which you have given us in the past four years. We realize that your task has not been easy hut your sound judgment and perseverance have guided us through our many problems and decisions. Your advice in our academic pursuits and the time and interest you have devoted to our class activities are greatly appreciated. The regards and best wishes of the “Satellites of ’61” are with you always. To the Class of 1961, You are the first class that has spent all of its twelve years in the Neshannock Township schools. You have grown with the system, one of which you may be justly proud. May the system always be proud of you, as it is now at your graduation. To you, the “Satellites” of 1961, go my very best wishes for your success as you venture into “outer space.” May the years in the Neshannock schools prove to be the kind of “control tower” that will furnish at least some of the necessary power to keep you “in orbit.” Good luck and God bless you. Verna Wilfert The “Satellites of ’61” acknowledge, with deep appreciation, the assistance of our homeroom teachers: Mr. Jess Toth, Mr. Donald Frediani, and Mr. John Peterson. They have been counselors, understanding friends, and inspiring leaders. They have been firm, when necessary, to help mold our lives so that we might be a true credit to our school. They have given unstintingly of their time in order to make our years productive, useful, and pleasant. Each of these men, in his own way, has contributed much toward the enjoyment of our years at Neshannock High School. 27 DONALD A. FREDIANI OFFICERS OF THE CLASS OF 1961: Dwiglit Racioppo, treasurer; Karen Ward, secretary; J. B. Heess, vice-president; Nita Thellman, historian; William Carlson, president. SATELLITE LOG The Senior Class of 1961 has truly gone “Around the World” in its own way. We attended the Waltno and Clen-Moore elementary schools for the first six years of our education. As seventh-graders, we attended the Oak Street school building. It was during this year that it was announced that an elementary and a high school were to be built on Mitchel Road. We are proud to have been the first class to spend all twelve years in Neshannock Township school buildings. In September of 1956 and as eighth-graders, we proudly accepted the Neshannock Memorial building. This was the first year that the school sponsored both a football and a basketball team. In April of 1957 we held our first social function, the “Eighth Grade Party.” 28 As Freshmen we elected officers and chose our class colors—medium blue and white. Miss Verna Wilfert was appointed our class advisor. Ninth grade at Memorial began to see more activities. In the spring the first school play, “What A Life,7 was presented. We all enjoyed our “Ninth Grade Prom ’ which was held in May. The school term 1958-1959 found us going to school on half-day sessions. However, we considered ourselves lucky because of the free afternoons. The Ienth Grade Party was held on April 3, 1959 in the Memorial gym. On May 15 the Junior- Sophomore play “Beauty and the Beef” was presented. On September 1, 1959, our class, as Juniors, moved proudly into the new high school. In October of 1959 the Junior Party was held. We danced under the beautiful colored lights in the lobby. On April 8, 1960 “Girl Crazy” was presented by the senior high school. We were the first class to honor the graduating Seniors at our “Junior Prom” on May 13, 1960. The gym was decorated in a Medieval motif. Spring of our Junior year also saw another first. It was the newly-organized golf team. In May, the Senior Class Officers were announced as follows: President, William Carlson; Vice-President. J. B. Heess; Secretary, Karen Ward: Treasurer, Dwight Racioppo; Historian. Nita Thellman. We began our Senior year on September 7, 1960. The staff of the 1961 Lance was chosen: Kay Kirk and Nita Thellman were to serve as Co-Editors; Judy Mc- Burney was to be the Copy Editor; Business Managers—Pearl Shelenberger, Karen Patterson; Advertising—Ralph Cicerone, Craig Mooney; Circulation—J. B. Heess, Rusty Snelling. As Seniors, we served as guides on November 15 when the high school was open for inspection. On December 5, 1960, we held our first big social event of the year for Seniors and their guests. It was a Senior Class Party, held in the lobby. The decorations followed the class colors. The Senior Class Play, “Come Over to Our House,” was presented on March 24, 1960. This was the first play to be presented entirely by Seniors. The Junior Class honored the Seniors at a Prom on May 12. The high school gym was decorated beautifully, the theme being “Around the World.” The first week of June was a busy one for us. On June 1 wre held the biggest social event of our high school days, our Dinner Dance. Our Baccalaureate Service w'as Sunday, June 4. On June 6, we presented our impressions of many school activities under the heading of a Class Day Program. The Senior Class Picnic took place on June 7. Commencement, on the eighth of June, marked the end of our twelve years of basic education and the beginning of a new era for us. 29 JOAN ALLISON WHISKER We, the Senior Class of 1961, are proud to have in our midst, Joan Allison Whisker, a foreign exchange student from Bangor, North Ireland. We are justly proud also of the fact that Joan is Neshannock High School’s first exchange student. Joan has taught us the meaning of friendship and understanding and the necessity and rewards of it. We endorse Joan as the kind of good-will ambassador who should be sent to all countries and is sent by the American Field Service. After graduation Joan will tour the United States and then return to Ireland. Joan will carry with her impressions of the American way of life. We can only hope that it will be as good as the wonderful impression she has made here in Neshannock High School. To Joan, We hope that you will carry to Ireland not only the impression of our way of life, but our sincere wishes for your success and happiness in the future and the treasured hope that you will never forget us and that we shall meet again. The Senior Class of 1961 Joan arrives at the home of Kay Kirk who was Joan's hostess, friend, and sister during her residence in New Castle. Joan cheers with the Pep Club during an excit- ing basketball game. This was a new experience for Joan. 30 Joan receives her senior class ring, a gift of the class, from the president of the Senior Class, Bill Carlson. Joan attends the Senior Class Dance with her escort, Craig Mooney. Joan, a future art teacher, enjoys sculpturing and painting. Joan proudly stands in her cap and gown and with her diploma from Neshannoch High School. 31 DIANNE MARTIN ARNOLD Academic Dramatics 11 Pep 10. 11, 12 Newspaper 10, 11, 12 (Editor) Annual Staff 12 Girls’ Ensemble 10, 11, 12 Cheerleader 10. 12 Majorette 11 Senior Play 12 TERRY SANKEY ATKINSON Pre-Engineering Automotive 11, 12 Perfect Attendance 10 32 WILLIAM RUSSELL BACK Pre-Engineering Glee Club 11 Drill Team 12 Pep 10 Homeroom Officer 11 (President) Annual Staff 12 Pep Band Manager 10, 11, 12 KAREN ELIZABETH BEES Academic Bridge 12 Future Nurses 11 Pep 10 Photography 11 Homeroom Officer 11 (Secretary-Treasurer) Annual Staff 12 Newspaper Staff 10 Prom Committee 11 LARRY BAUDIN Academic Automotive 11, 12 Pep 10 33 J ROBERTA JEAN BOOK Commercial Girls’ Club 10 Homemaking 10, 11 (Secretary) Future Teachers 12 Library Attendant 11 Library Club 11 CHARLES FREDERICK BLUEDORN General Automotive 12 Homeroom Officer 10, 11 (President) 12 (Treasurer) 34 MARY JANE BOTHAM Academic G.A.A. 11 Pep 10, 12 Spanish 12 Future Teachers 11, 12 Annual Staff 12 Library Attendant 11 Basketball Usherette 12 CLAUDE EDWARD BRANSCOME Academic Automotive 11 Radio 12 (President) Homeroom Officer 11 (Treasurer) 12 (President) Annual Staff 12 (Sports Editor) Football 10, 11, 12 Prom Committee 11 School Play 11 Senior Play 12 MARGARET JANE BROWN Academic Future Nurses 12 Pep 10 Annual Staff 12 Library Attendant 11 Perfect Attendance 11 Prom Committee 11 NANCY EILEEN CANAN Academic Future Nurses 11, 12 Pep 10 Homeroom Officer 12 (Secretary) Annual Staff 12 Library Attendant 12 School Play 10 Prom Committee 11 Senior Play 12 (Co-ordinator) DONNA JEAN CARRIGAN Academic Bridge 12 Future Nurses 11. 12 Pep 10 Annual Staff 12 Library Attendant 11 Perfect Attendance 10 Library Club 11 36 WILLIAM RALPH CARLSON A cademic Jazz 11 Class Officer 12 (President) Homeroom Officer 10 (Vice-President) 11 (President) Annual Staff 12 Prom Committee 11 County Band 10, 12 District Band 10, 11, 12 State Band 11 Pep Band 10. 11, 12 Dance Band 12 RALPH JOHN CICERONE Pre-Engineering Pep Club 10 Sportsman’s Club 11 Varsity Club 10, 11, 12 (President 10, 11) Student Council 10, 12 (Vice-President) RICHARD ELLSWORTH CONFER Pre-Engineering Astronomy 11 Pep 10 Radio 12 Newspaper Staff 10, 11, 12 Annual Staff 12 Hi-Y 10 Art Club 11 RONALD JOHN COUSINO General Course Sportsman’s Club 12 (Vice-President) Homeroom Officer 12 (Treasurer) Attended Piqua Central 10, 11 37 SANDRA KATHRYN CRILL Academic C.A.A. 11 Future Nurses 11, 12 Pep 10, 12 Annual Staff 12 Perfect Attendance 10 DAVID REED CRISWELL General Automotive 11 Hi-Y 10 SETH JEROME DAUGHERTY Pre-Engineering Astronomy 11 German 12 Annual Staff 12 Senior Play 12 (Co-ordinator) 38 JOSEPH PATRICK DAVIS Commercial Automotive 11, 12 Perfect Attendance 10 KATHLEEN DAVIS Academic Biology 11 (Vice-President) Bridge 12 Youth Page 12 Annual Staff 12 Prom Committee 11 Villa Maria High School 10 SHIRLEY JEAN DAVIS General Homemaking 11 Future Nurses 11, 12 Pep 10 Annual Staff 12 Library Attendant 12 School'Play 11 Prom Committee 11 PAUL FRANCIS DAVIS Academic Automotive 11 Sportsman’s 11 St. Vincent Prep. Would this one know fame and honest acclaim While the other knows only life’s woes— Which one would he able to brighten to flower Life’s spark when it scarcely glows. W hich would fill the heart with fervent fire And greatness when peril is near. Which one will lift a friend from the mire Or, through friendship, dry a tear. W ho will kneel on humble knees To help a little child. And who will keep the homefires bright In the wilderness, deep and wild. Yes, these things we may ponder now As the end of the year draws nigh. And we’ll wander thru life, as forward we go And will say “Good Luck”—not “Goodbye.” —BETSY JENKINS 68 yto 1 ■P r , u i r - 4Sf Vy r YhY’1 'i J{Jr 4 1 . y Kr ■70 y i '■ f ° A V, ) ' | v u Uj y r Y ,jO, % . f yT Yp - f vb 2 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Warren Morgan, president; Joe Tanner, vice-presi- dent; Sandy Vance, secretary; Willie Martello, treasurer; Nedra Gross, historian. VARSITY FOOTBALL 1960 brought the Lancer Football Squad a two-four-two season. They defeated Laurel and New Wilmington, yielded to Shenango, Northwestern. Conneaute Valley, and Union, and tied the Townsville and Mohawk teams. The Lancers were not hampered by any serious injuries during the season. This was the first year for Francis J. Paolone as Neshannock’s head football coach. Mr. Paolone, backed by his able assistants. Robert Bleggi, Samuel Aven, and Terry Kelley, did a tremendous job coaching the Lancer team. The high scoring honors for the year go to Warren Morgan who racked up thirty- six points. Chalking up more of the six pointers were Bill Hedland, Jim Masson, Bernie Hanlon, Bill Wilson, and Dick Knight. The Seniors who added the spark to the ever-charging Lancer line were Bill Wilson, and Bill Alack at the ends, Joe Nelson and Claude Branscome at tackle, Patsy Offredo at guard, and John Loney and Mike Stefano at center. The great, hard-hitting back- field was led by the Seniors Bernie Hanlon at quarterback and Bill Hedland at fullback. This year two of Neshannock’s “greats” made the All-County Team: Bernie Hanlon and Patsy Offredo. This team is comprised of players from Class B Squads who are chosen for their ability. Patsy Offredo was also chosen for the All-WPIAL second team. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Lancer basketball team, coached by the very capable Mr. Don Black, proved to be one of the most surprising teams in the county. When the chips were down our team would fight hard and usually come out on top. Our season’s record of 17-9 helps to prove this fact. The big game of the year was the defeat of Wampum, the unbeaten Section 20 champions. It was the upset of the year. What a night for the Lancers! Later the Neshannock team went on to win the Tri-County Tournament, which was quite a feat in itself. High scoring honors for the season go to Dennis Mielke with 439 points, and Sam Gealy with 419 points. Rebounding honors go to Dennis Mielke with 316 and Warren Morgen with 195. The seniors that played terrific ball for the Lancers this season were: Dennis Mielke and Craig Mooney, co-captains; Carl Peters; Bill Mack; Ralph Cicerone; and Gary Lehman. Two of the Lancers received the honor of being chosen for the W.P.I.A.L. Section Team. Junior, Sam Gealy was chosen for the second team and Dennis Mielke received Honorable Mention. This tournament is an annual event at the Westminster Field House. Teams from all over this area participate. The Lancers, who were fourth seated in the tournament, played their first game against Mohawk. This was a thriller by itself. The Lancers were victorious in a 61-58 overtime game. This victory entered our team in the semi-finals against Wilmington. The Lancers repeated their fine performance of the first game by winning 58-49. The championship game against Lakeview was an exciting one, especially when the Lancers came out on top by the score of 55-44. Coach Don Black accepted the gigantic first place team trophy. Each of the twelve team members and the two team managers received individual trophies. Sam Gealy was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player award. This automatically made him captain of the All Tournament Team of which Dennis Mielke of the Lancers was also chosen to be a member. Congratulations to Coach Black and to all the Lancers. 123 Jim Plonka, Carl Peters, Sam Gealy, Ralph Cicerone, Pete Norris. VARSITY GOLF 1 he Lancer Golf Team’s second season was a terrific one. The play, entitled “Come Over To Our House,” centered around Jay Eldridge, a musically inclined but confused schoolboy. Jay was unattractive to all but Marge Wilkins, his intellectual equal. His ideas on girls and music began to change when a new girl, Evie Cannon, comes to town. Lindy and Marion, two spoiled sisters in the Eldridge family, are determined to keep their mother from marrying Steve Reynolds. Steve has two children. Hildred is a fourteen-year-old who continually tries to impress Hugo Willifred, Lindy’s boy- friend. Butch is a good-natured but awkward teenager with a crush on Marion. Things really begin to happen when Jay shocks a high school audience by playing ‘boogie woogie.’ Reporters, a Hollywood scout, and an orchestra conductor add to the confusion. Mrs. Thompson, a lively old grandmother with a lot of good sense, enjoys herself throughout the play because of her understanding of people. To end a perfect story, the couples are re-united, Mr. Reynolds wins Amanda’s heart, Jay is awarded a musical scholarship, and everyone is happy. The play was a success under the direction of Mr. Frediani who was assisted by student directors Judy McBurney and John Robertson.
