to Build the Future THE ZEPHYR August, 1988 Volume XLI Published by the Annual Staff of 1988 Neponset High School Neponset, Illinois 309-594-2396 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN VARIOUS ACTIVITIES Another unique year at N.H.S. has passed with fond remembrances. Part of the uniqueness was due to the lowest enrollment in the history of N.EES. — thirty-seven students. Regardless of size, the traditional learning experiences and extracurricular activities were carried on thereby giving N.H.S. students ample opportunities to participate in sports, plays, clubs, and a variety of classes. Again, a few students were enrolled in Kewanee High classes for specialized instruction not offered at Neponset. The year was filled with learning not only in the classroom, but in other ways as well. Thus, as we look back and draw upon these learning experiences, we can look to the future with more anticipation, determination, capability, and confidence. Coach Chuck Blake receives the National Coaches Award recognizing him for his past accomplishments in coaching the high school girl's basketball teams. Working on their Algebra I homework, Chadd and Mitch make sure their answers are the same. While performing “The Shoemaker’s Wife for the Woman's Thursday Club, Stacy Dahl makes light of the fact that Ben is frightened by the shoemaker’s ghost. Later in the year, the Advanced English Class performed the play for the Senior Citizens. Waiting to make his appearance at the Christmas Party, Santa Claus (Tim Bennett) relaxes with his two elves, Stacy Dahl and Karen Hechtner. WHILE PREPARING FOR THEIR FUTURE Sara, Selina, Karen, Nancy and Tracy decide that team work is the best way to cook while helping with the FHA project of making and selling cookies before Christmas. As Freshmen attendants. Chadd Currier and Angie Canellos enjoy the coronation dance at Homecoming. 3 While Terry and Chris wait for their lunch (lower right), Lisa and Angie decide to cat a cold lunch outside to take advantage of the nice weather. Nancy Stabler stares through the Toulon defense looking for an open person. On October 14. Doug Sommer of Country Companies provided a skid demonstration test for the whole school. The driver education class helped with the demonstration while Mr. Curry, Terry Bennett, Missy Stuckey, and Mrs. Hood served as experimental drivers. 4 GETTING OFF TO A GOOD START! Band members warm up before starting another first-hour practice session. When Hansel (Scott Hansen) yells, all of the forest animals scatter. 5 IN MEMORY OF JAMES CLINEBELL This page of the forty-first edition of The Zephyr is to honor the memory of James Clincbcll, who passed away suddenly on December 22, 1987 at the age of forty. He played an active role in the lives of many N.H.S. students. Besides teaching all of the science classes in the junior high, he taught Biology I and II, chemistry, and physics at the high school. Mr. Clinebell coached the grade school boys basketball team and the track teams of both the high school and the grade school. He taught at Neponset from 1981 to 1985, a total of four years. Mr. Clinebell was well liked by all of his students. One of the reasons he was so well liked was because he rarely became angry with his students. Also, he is remembered for his wide variety of interests and activities. Several times, he provided entertainment at school functions by singing folk songs and accompanying himself by playing the guitar. Other interests involved ecology, acting, and writing, particularly poetry. Therefore we, the members of the Annual Staff along with the rest of the student body of Neponset High, would like to express our deepest appreciation in remembering Mr. Clinebell, the teacher that he was, and all that he did for his students. LEARNING FROM 11= ADMINISTRATION Entering some data into the computer, Mr. William White thinks of some of the earlier methods used to keep school records up-to-date. Mr. White continues to serve capably as district superintendent and as the grade school principal. Mrs. Joyce Mowbray prepares the monthly board report for an upcoming meeting. Mrs. Mowbray is secretary for the grade school and the school board. Ready to begin another Monday night session are board members Bill Bennett, Jack Scott (President), Annette Lord, Jon Pickering, Terry Kuster, Randall Crofton, and Raymond Robinson. 8 NEW PRINCIPAL WELCOMED TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF High school secretary and district treasurer, Carol Nash, uses the copier, a real time saver as compared to the past when copies were made manually or with a spirit duplicator. The copier is one of the most heavily used pieces of equipment in the high school. Mr. George Hughbanks checks some of the many trophies won by previous athletic teams at Neponset as he anticipates new ones to be added during this year. In fulfilling his first year as principal at Neponset, Mr. Hughbaqks became accustomed to a smaller school enrollment and to all new faces among the faculty, student body, and parents. His new position also entailed serving as transportation director, athletic director, counselor, teaching a computer class the second semester, and serving as the freshmen class advisor. 9 SMALL CLASSES ENABLE TEACHERS TO GIVE PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION MISS MARJORIE CLARK Enjoying a new electronic typewriter after years of using manuals. Miss Clark gives a demonstration for one of her typing classes. In addition to teaching two typing classes, she also teaches French I II, office practice, and Shorthand I. Miss Clark serves as sponsor for the French Club. Junior Class, and the Cheerleaders. MR. DALE BARTLETT Mr. Bartlett seems enthusiastic while waiting for the band members to come to their first-hour class. Mr. Bartlett, who substituted several months for Mrs. Page, was responsible for all the music classes and programs in both the high school and elementary school while at Neponsct. MRS. CAROL GERROND Moving into a new age of word processing, Mrs. Gerrond checks some information to be entered into the computer. Mrs. Gerrond's busy schedule involves teaching all of the English classes, keeping the library in working order, directing two plays, and sponsoring the Mask Script Club. 10 MRS. LAURIE STEGER Brushing up on her tennis skills, Mrs. Steger prepares to show one of her PE classes a proper serve. Besides teaching PE, she also teaches world history, U.S. history, and U.S. government. Mrs. Steger is also involved with basketball as she coaches the grade school girl’s team and serves as assistant coach of the high school girl’s team. MR. JOHN NELL Using the new VCR instead of the old movie projector, Mr. Nell prepares to show a film to his driver education class. This year, Mr. Nell teaches introductory business, pre-algebra, geometry, accounting. and driver education. He also serves as advisor for the Annual Staff. MRS. JANE HOOD Mrs. Hood is well pleased with the pics which were prepared by one of her home economics students. Being new on the staff this year, Mrs. Hood was initiated into teaching home economics, consumer education, and health. Additional duties involved sponsoring the FHA and their many activities. 11 N.H.S. STAFF 12 MR. ALAN CURRY With the new addition of a vent hood, Mr. Curry keeps watch over a chemistry class experiment. Biology and junior-high science arc also taught by Mr. Curry. He coaches the high school boy's basketball and track teams. MR. JEFF WELLING Utilizing the more modem writing surface for markers instead of the traditional chalkboard, Mr. Welling works through an example for his Algebra I class. As a new faculty member. Mr. Welling’s first year at N.H.S. entailed teaching junior-high math. Algebra I II, advanced math, as well as being Senior Class sponsor and assistant basketball coach. MRS. MARGARET PAGE Anticipating using this selection of music for her chorus class, Mrs. Page previews it prior to classtime. In addition to her new role as a mother, Mrs. Page teaches chorus, band, grade school music and directs the pep band. WELCOMES THREE NEW MEMBERS Miss Clark, Mrs. Steger, and Mrs. Gcrrond look over some gifts at the Christmas Party which was hosted by the Seniors. Mr. Hughbank’s expression proves that looking into one of the older files in the office can be quite interesting. Taking semester tests is not entirely drudgery for N.H.S. students. Here, Mrs. Hood and Mrs. Nash prepare food for snacks during break time. As Mr. Welling completes an Algebra II problem, he's really contemplating how he can come up with an equation for the Fresh-Soph basketball team. 13 SCHOOL PERSONNEL SUPPLY VALUABLE SERVICES Ray Schuyf, Germaine Breitbach, and Diane Bennett arc ready and eager to provide daily transportation for the students of Nc-ponset to school and school activities. Completing his second year as custodian, Don Stabler works hard to install a radiator regulator to hopefully improve the consistency of the school's heating system. Mr. Stabler keeps everything running smoothh at N.H.S., including the buses. After bringing the food to the high school from the cafeteria. Loretta Gutschlag serves a nutritious meal to the noontime crowd in the study hall. 14 LEARNING FROM THE PAST ... TO BUILD THE FUTURE CLASSES Looking through some brochures. It is hoped that our students shall continue on the track of learning from the past to build their future. As the Zephyr train was retired from service and is remembered for all of its good qualities, so shall this edition of The Zephyr remind you of the activities and events of the 1987-1988 school year at Ne-ponset High School. 80
