THE ZEPHYR Published by the Annual Staff 1985 Neponset High School Neponset, Illinois August 1985 Volume XXXVIII Student Life and Academics Portray A group of enthusiastic ephynt fans cheer the team on to a very successful season. Phil shows us what can happen if one stays at N.H.S. too long. Cindy gives us her “innocent look at one of the boy ' basketball games at Central. Solomon exhibits his basketball talent as he passes around the opponents from Ohio. At the all-school Christmas party, Mrs. Webb seems to be glad that Christmas vacation is only a few minutes away. a 2 the Changing Signs of the Times Thf« “cool guys scout the floor at the Homecoming dance % hile maintaining their position near the refreshment table. One of the most popular places at lunch hour is by the phone. Genia demonstrates the finer points of telephone etiquette. Lori Peterson takes over the queenly duties for the Homecoming dance and takes getting down to earth seriously. 3 Within the Walls of N.H.S.. Time Passes Several members of the student body enjoy dan-ring to the music of Reaction Formation at the Homecoming Dance. FHA Freshman initiates Sara Kelly, Jo Ellen Scott, Karen Hechtner, and Stac) Dahl display clown-day attire during Initiation Week. At the Christmas Party, N.H.S. own Mr. Glinebcll entertains the students and faculty . Marley Crockett and Sally Dahl appear happy with their awards from Coach Blake 5 Dedication The Annual Staff of 1985 desires to dedicate this volume of the Zephyr to Mrs. Judy Webb, a faculty member of N.H.S. for five years. Mrs. Webb divides her teaching duties between the junior high and high school mathematics classes. In this dedication, it is the desire of the staff to recognize Mrs. Webb’s conscientious efforts and professional manner in her teaching as well as in her extra-curricular duties. Thus, the Annual Staff, on behalf of the N.H.S. student body, wishes to express their appreciation for the service that Mrs. Webb has provided to the students at Neponset High School. Using the chalkboard is a common ex perience for Mrs. Webb in presenting new concepts in her math classes. At right, Mrs. Webb works to update her student's grade file that she maintains on a computer program. 6 ADMINISTRATION Mr. White is Welcomed by the Administration. As principal Merle Kenady steps out hi door, he eagerly awaits the full day of activities at Neponset High. Along with being transportation director, Mr. Kenady has the duty of teaching a computer math class this year. Mr. William White, the new superintendent for Neponset Schools, checks his calendar for an upcoming event. Coming to Neponset from Kincaid, Mr. White also serves as the elementary principal. 8 Mr . Carol Nash. high M’hool Krrrfliry, gets out the petty caah fund to prepare herself as students get ready to purchase their lunches. Mr. William White and his secretary, Mrs. Joyce Mowbray, prepare to leave the elementary school after they have concluded another busy day. Board President Bill Bennett gives Jon Pickering, Jim Fox, Ron Miller, Doug Miles, Jack Scott, and Randall Crofton a run-down of the topics of discussion at the beginning of one of their monthly meetings. 9 Nine Staff Members Offer Instruction for a Wide Variety of Courses MR. JAMES CLINEBELL energetically prepares a solution for demonstration purposes in one of his laboratory classes. In addition to teaching two classes of biology and one class of physics at the high school, Mr. Clinebell also teaches junior high science. MRS. DIANNA DAVIS utilizes the overhead projector while instructing her consumer education class. Mrs. Davis also teaches home economics and health as well as the responsibility of being FHA advisor. 10 MRS. JUDY WEBB attempts to draw out student participation from her advanced math students while discussing the graphical solution to a problem. In addition to teaching Algebra I, Algebra II, advanced math, and junior high math, she has the duty of being senior class sponsor. Even ifgn of (he time are evidenced by the faculty a shown in this picture taken in the year Faces change, styles change, but N.H.S. has been fortunate to have a qualified and dedicated staff. MISS MARJORIE CLARK seems to be enjoying grading some French papers. Miss Clark teaches French and typing while serving as junior class advisor, French Club advisor, and cheerleading sponsor. 11 N.H.S. Teachers Provide Quality MRS. CAROL GERROND puts the finishing touches on a display in the library. Besides teaching all the English classes at N.H.S., she serves as librarian and sponsor of the Mask Script Club. Having a quirk conference in the study hall, these teachers prepare to begin another day of teaching responsibilities. MR. JOHN NELL calculates students' grades for an upcoming issue of report cards. Aside from teaching introductory business, basic math, geometry, Accounting I, Accounting II, and drivers education, Mr. Nell has the responsibility of being Annual Staff advisor. 12 Education MRS MARGARET PAGE points out a calendar date of one of the many activities that the band and chorus were involved in this year. Mrs. Page instructs elementary and high school band and chorus classes. Also she gives lessons to individual students. MR. LARRY FREEMAN uses the chalkboard in giving a presentation to his biology class. Other subjects taught by Mr. Freeman include history, U.S. government, and physical education. He also serves as sponsor of the freshman class. 13 Bus Drivers. Janitors, and Cooks Work to Keep N.H.S. Functioning Smoothly. As transportation director, Mr. Kenady confers with Vivian Williamson and Ray Schuyf about their scheduled bus runs. As a sign that another school day is over. Bill and Germaine Breitbach begin their daily routine of cleaning the study hall floor. Lorraine Pease and Vivian W illiamson work in planning nutritional and appealing meals to be sent to the high school students and faculty. Once prepared, the meals were served at the high school by Germain Breitbach. 14 Mask and Script Enjoys the Responsibility for Entertaining the Student Body as Well as the Community «ng arid ready to ork on their plays is the Mask and Script consisting of Paula Cambron. Jamie Rogers. Richard Gunning, Phil Miller, and Paul Hansen. 16 Everyone in the fall play caul patiently awaits Mrs. Gerrond's final comments and revisions on dress rehearsal night. The Mask and Script officers, Jeff Williamson, vice-president; Lori Peterson, president; Genia VanWynsberghe, historian public relations; Sally Dahl, secretary; and Marley Crockett, treasurer, inspect the club's charter with interest. The charter itself represents a sign of the club's existence at N.H.S. since it was organized in 1 966. Student Council Keeps the Good Times Goins During the election year, the Student Council members kept in pace with their many activities. Reminiscing about their activities during the busy election year are Student Council members consisting of Susan Verbout, Kendra Heise, Julie Duff, Laurie Canellos, Paul Hansen, Adviser Mr. Kenady, Karen Hechtner, Jo Scott, Marley Crockett, and Phil Miller. Laurie Canellos, treasurer; Kendra Heise, president; Marley Crockett, secretary; and Susan Verbout, vice-president seem to be really enthusiastic about crushing all those aluminum cans which the Council recycled. Other activities of the Council involved sponsoring a movie night in April and a dance in March. 18 Membership Crows for the N” Club Members of thr Varsity Club consisted of Sponsor Chuck Blake. To become members, these people have earned a varsity letter in athletics. Secretary Lori Peterson, Treasurer Kendra Heise. President Richard Gunning, and Vice-President Tony Bennett gather for a discussion of possible club activities. One of the club's activities enjoyed by the members was that of attending a Bradley basketball game. 19 Small Numbers Composing one of the smallest bands in the history of N.H.S., Haquel Kaiser. Julie Duff, Solomon Shaner, Lori Peterson, Jo Scott, and ('indy Sissel seem to have their director. Mrs. Page. amused. Having so few students in band obviously caused some limitations; however, the organization participated in several activities during the year including concerts, playing at games, contest, and enjoyed a field trip to a musical in the Spring. In order to raise funds for the music department, band members sold oranges and grapefruit earlier in the year. Between selections, the three Senior Pep Band members pose with their rendition of the Three Stooges. Performing between the boys games at Central is the Pep Band. However, some members do become distracted at times. Right. Cindy and Kendra? Troy Craine and Mrs. Page make a final analysis of his solo for the music contest held at Dunlap. Troy received a first place rating on his trumpet solo. 20 Challenge the Band Program at N.H.S. The main activity of the Pep Band wan to perform at the boys basketball games at Kewanee Central. Pep Band members shown are Kellie Monroe, Troy Craine, Raquel Kaiser, Kendra Heise, Jo Scott, Lori Peterson, Julie Duff, Cindy Sissel, and the band director, Mrs. Solomon, Lori, and Jo make some adjustments while practicing for their saxophone trio presentation. They performed it at the solo and ensemble contest held on March 2. 21 FHA Has a Busy —I nr AUCDITA Many students. including five male member , worked hard to make it a very successful year! Marley, Cindy, Chelese, Mrs. Davis, Paula, and Angie are excited about the opening of gifts. Other activities that highlighted the year included the Thanksgiving dinner, the craft fair, the FHA trip to the (Juad-Cities, the honor banquet, freshman initiation, and also the selling of Treasure Chests and calendar . 22 but Fun-Filled Year FHA officer look over the item for the Treasure (!hr tn which proved to br the main money-making project of thr year. Dianna Davi . sponsor: Cindy Sissel, ice-president; Sally Dahl, secretary; and Marla Stabler, treasurer. Much work was put in by the FHA member in making various craft items to sell at the craft fair. Marley Crockett, Wendy Bate , and Mr . Davis watch the large crowd at the craft fair. As a result for selling the most treasure items in the region, Kendra Heiae b surprised by receiving a cash a ard of $100.00. The magic of Christmas glows from Lori, as Rodney her reindeer finds a coxy place to rest at the FHA Christmas party. 23 Annual Staff Goes into Action to Compose a Sign of the Times Annual Staff members Laurie Canellos. Julie Duff, Genia VanWynsberghe, Kendra Heine, and Chelene Guthrie assemble to make plans for another production of The Zephyr. Genia, Marley, Julie, and Kendra work strenuously in preparing a shipment for an immediate deadline. 24 Looking over the advertising materials from this year's kit for compiling the yearbook are Mr. Nell, advisor: Julie Duff, co-editor; Chelese Guthrie, business manager; and Kendra Heise, co-editor. 25 Chorus Participation Shows Increased Interest in Music Thin year's chorus gather in front of the music room window to discuss the year' activities. Jeff Williamson, and Phil Miller. This was the first year of varsity coaching for Mr. R W Phil and his opponent try to scare each other off by making the funniest face. Gerrond prepare her lesson for one of the many English classes. She teaches freshman through senior English. Mrs. Page accompanies Jennie Scott, Sally Dahl, Lori Peterson, and Marla Stabler while they practice for the coming vocal solo and ensemble contest. Mrs. Page also directs the band program at N.H.S. Adam Pratt, Brad Smith, and Paul Hanson struggle through the Geometry end of the year test. In addition to geometry, students may enroll in basic math, algebra, advanced algebra, advanced math, or com puter math. 38 Mrs. Davis helps to guide along Laurie Canellos on her Home Ec. II sew'ing project as Kris Griffith, Kari Moore, and Richard Gunning observe. Students at N.H.S. have a choice of five classes of home economics involving such topics as foods, clothing, family care, housing, and consumer economics. Mr. Freeman skillfully demonstrate how to serve the volleyball to one of his four P.E. classes. Other miscellaneous clause offered include American History, world history, health, French I and II, and the work study program as well as other vocational classes offered at Kewanee High. Miss Clark shows Angie Morris how to write a well-liked phrase in shorthand. Other business related subjects offered at N.H.S. are basic business, typing, accounting, and advanced accounting. The science lab is the scene for many dissection and experiment done in the Science classes which this year included biology and physics. 39 Uarsitv Lady Zephyrs Finish The 1984-85 Lady Zephyrs Varsity Basketball Team consisted of Tracey Bennett, Julie Golby, Kellie Monroe, Dawn Fisher, Stacy Dahl, Jo Scott, Kirsey Nash, (standing) Manager Genii VanWynsberghe, Kendra Heise, Paula Gambron, Ix ri Peterson, Marley Crockett, Sally Dahl. Singing and Dancing Presented These young girls confer about helping a poor, little old lady across the street. When they decide to help, the old woman launches into her story of the beginning of fast food restaurants which leads into the plot of the play. Joining in their school song, these terribly proper, young ladies of Miss Chillbody's School, express their beliefs concerning high society. As part of the night's entertainment at the Kot-ton Klub. the Happy Sisters soften up Big Mac McNugget's gang with a little old, soft shoe. as an Integral Part of Fast Food Citv During drm rehear !, Mr . Gerrond make a final adjuHtment a part of the cast do the “Maple l eaf Hag at the Hotsy Totsy Kotton Klub. The play was written and directed by Mrs. Gerrond while Mrs. Page assisted with the musical portions. 45 Colonel K. F. Saunders and Mis Dillard chat away as Miss Chillbody gives her neph - . Bobbin Baskins III, a lesson or two on the fate of the school and hi behavior. You’re the Inspiration” The Prom Court consisted of Phil Miller; Lori Peterson, Senior attendant; Susan Verbout. Queen; Richard Gunning. King; Dave Snyder. Senior attendant; and Chelese Guthrie. Phil and Chelese, representing the Junior Class, crowned the new king and queen. Reflecting on the dance's success are chaperone Sue Scott; Prom greeters Karen Hechtner and Mike Bates; and Seniors Dawn Fisher and Julie Duff. Sets the Mood for a Romantic Evening Phil Miller places the crown on the head of the new 1985 Prom Queen, Susan Verbout. Everyone seems to be caught up in the mood of the evening. While dancing on Saturday evening, these couples contemplate all the efforts put forth by the Juniors in order to provide a successful Prom. The Prom Banquet was held on Friday evening at the Congregational Church where the traditional will and prophecy were read. 47 These couples fall into the groove of the music provided by W JRE. Track Team Uses Their Time to Make Themselves Known Chelese Guthrie competes in the 200 meter dash as well as having completed the 1 00 meter low hurdles earlier. Jo Scott scans the track at Atkinson for her inevitable 400 meter dash. Richard Gunning shows the meaning of pain as he stretches for those extra valuable inches in the long jump at Atkinson.
