Annual Staff Mem bers Work Diligently to Annual Staff members are making their way toward the yearbook workshop held at the Galesburg Sheraton Inn on September 6. The workshop ineluded sessions on photography, writing ropy, theme development, and design. Editor Cathy Junis and assistant-editor Susan Mowbray are thinking up new ways to keep the staff on schedule. 22 Mike Barm s looks intently at some of the thousands of pictures the staff exhibited at the PTO Carnival held at the Grade School. Steve received this award for his four years of dedicated participation in band activities. 25 FHA Hosts Spring FHA girls and their sponsor Mrs. Block were instrumental in several activities throughout the year. Among the activities were having a Progressive Supper, Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Caroling Party, and Senior Honor Supper. Throughout the year, the girls had Big and Little Sisters” and drew for Secret Heart Sisters during the week of Valentine’s. In April, the organization hosted the Section Spring Rally. Shyla Guthrie. Debbie Sehurer. Dawn Bennett. Kelly Heehtner. Jamie Wittmeyer, Jay Wittmeyer, Jeff Waugh, and Jim Kroot. Kelly Heehtner and Jeff Waugh. Freshman member, fulfill their duty of filling the pop machine which provided most of the income for the Student Council. Again this year. Mr. Marshall served as advisor for the group. The Council sponsored four assemblies on a variety of topics throughout the year—all utilizing outside talent. The Student Council Exchange with Western High School was held in April. Mark puts up another shot against Williamsfield, as Cary moves in. Cathy Junis, and Debbie Sehurer all attempt to surround and steal the ball from a Bradford player. Kelly looks for an outlet pass but only finds herself running into a Brimfield player. Track Is Fun for Everyone forking under the supervision of Coach Bill Fierce were squad members (kneeling) Mike Williamson. Jim Miller. Rick Heise. Joanne Miller, (standing) Boh Heise. Carol Heise, Jenny Schuvf, Shawn Schurer. and Jon Scott. Jim gets a good hand-off to Mike in the 1st leg of the 440 relay which they won at I iMoille. This particular race was their best effort of the season. Other relay members were Rick Heise and Shawn Schurer. 46 N.H.S. was very fortunate this year to have Hanna Weinberg and Sandra James as students sponsored through the Youth for Understanding program. Sandra, from Australia, made her home with Reverend and Mrs. Candler. Staying with the Bradley Waugh Family was Hanna who is from West Germany. Both girls seemed to adapt well to their new environment and became very spec ial to not only their host families, but to all the N.H.S. students and teachers. Sandra takes time to fix the film in her camera as taking pictures was an important activity for her during her stay at Nep-onset. Showing items of interest from her native country of West Germany. Hanna gives a presentation for the Women's Thursday Club. During the year both Sandra and Hanna had opportunities to speak to various groups around the community. Sandra removes her make-up after the plays in which she participated. Sandra enjoyed the extra-curricular activities at N.H.S. as they are limited in the Australian school system. Hanna tries to sleep after the strenuous class trip. 43 In the above two pictures. Sandra and Hanna seem to be enjoving practice for Baccalaureate which was held in the United Methodist Church. After getting her diploma. Hanna receives a rose upon completing the school year with new friends who will long be remembered. N.H.S. Welcomes Two Foriegn Students While in the reception ---------------- enthusiastically accepts the congratut lions offered by many of those i attendance at graduation. Announcement of the Homecoming court took place during halftime of our home game with Malden on January 4. The team tried hard, hut graciously lost. Crowning Ceremony Highlights Junior attendants. Cheryl Ouart and Mike Barnes approach the rest of the court during the Homecoming Dance. This year’s royalty was King Tim Stone and Queen Debbie Schurer. Sonia Block and Bob Lindbcck crowned the royal couple. Jim Miller and Kami Nash lead the Homecoming court during half-time activities. Jim and Kami were the Freshmen attendants. Sophomore attendants were Mark Miller and Rachel Yepsen. 50 Samira manage a nice smile for the photographer as she ami Steve were the representatives of the Senior Gass as first attendants. After just learning they were King and Queen. Tim and Debbie set out to meet the rest of their court. Second attendants were Seniors Connie Davis and Tim Folger. Mark Miller, and Debbie Schurer dosie-doe to the music of the life-loving Fezziwig. 53 Scenes We Would Like Scenes We Would Like lo Forget provided good entertainment for a good-sized audience on April 11. 1980. Although sponsored b Mask Script, the entire Sophomore Speech Class participated in some aspect or another. All of the scenes were written by the play participants. On these pages are a few of the various scenes which were directed by Mrs. Gerrond. Above. Wallies, the posh butler, mistakenly strikes down Polly Pewee. the ignorant wife of P.U. Top right, the disco seene has even penetrated to Nep-onset High. Guv Sly and Snag Malone, alias Mark Miller and Mike Williamson, show Pigrilla and Perry. Shy la and Rachel, some new DISCO moves. Lisa Nyert. a kind, sweet, and considerate mother, whips her son for trying to get money for the church collection. 54 to Forget” Written by N.H.S. Students Bob Sleet. the hippy dippy weatherman. tells the rest of the news-team the forecast for our area. P U. listens in as Wattles tells Modesto enough lies to make him angry enough to want to kill P.U. Above right, in another scene. Sandra James, the high class announcer, introduces Guy Sly, Snag Malone, and the infamous Stone Cold, a mafia connection who doesn t actually think Guy Sly has a brain in his head. The crowd goes wild as president James Carter, Jon Scott, makes many campaign promises which he knows they want to hear. 55 Sayonara to the Class of 1980 The 1980 Prom Court consisted of King Steve Williamson. Queen Sandra James and 1st attendants Tim Folger and Connie Davis. Shvla Guthrie and Craig Williamson were the Junior Class representatives w ho crowned the royally. Students dam e the night away to the beat of Quest!! 56 Steve Williamson is caught in action while reading the class will. Board President. Graduation Awards Presented Bob Heise, Salulatorian. and Cathy Junis, Valedictorian, address ihr audience of the 1980 Commencement exercises. Sieve Williamson receives the Sportsmansip Plaque from Mr. Marshall in recognition of his sportsmanlike attitude and actions exhibited during his four years of high school. Steve and Cathy Junis were named as the recipients of the Opportunity Award. Cathy and Bob learn from Mr. Marshall that they have won the Citizenship Award based on the voting of their classmates and the faculty. Bob was also given the Loyalty Award which was announced later at the Alumni Banquet. 62 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY District 307 Secures New Administrator As the new Superintendent of District 307, Mr, Anthony B. Prochaska became acquainted with many new faces—among them were the Board of Education, faculty and staff of both schools, students, and parents. Even though this in itself was a monumental task, Mr. Prochaska still had time to carry out his regular duties as Superintendent. Two of his pet projects for the year included economizing on expenditures and improving the school lunch program. The school system appreciates his dedicated effort to not only keep it operating smoothly, but also in bringing about improvements. Above right, Mrs. Joyce Mowbray serves as Mr. Prochaska's secretary and also as the Board of Education Secretary. This was her third year in fulfilling these duties. Putting in much time and effort in pursuing the goal of educational betterment for District 307‘s students were board members Martha Price, Jack Scott, Alan Kaiser, William Guthrie. Lawrence Krahn. Randall Crofton. and Ronald Miller. Mr. Scott served as president. 64 Mr. F. David Marshall Mr. Marshall is jotting down some ideas for an upcoming state report. Completing his second year as principal at Neponset High. Mr. Marshall also taught a psychology class this year. Mr. Marshall received his education at Illinois Slate University where he received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in education. As Principal, Mr. Marshall likes his job because of the cooperation of the staff and the over-all attitudes of the students. He also likes the opportunity of watching students mature and become of age. Mrs. Eveline Lyford Retrieving some supplies from the old safe in the Principal’s office is Mrs. Eveline Lyford, school secretary. She also serves as treasurer of the School District and provides many needed tasks in order to keep the school functioning properly. When asked what she likes about her job, Mrs. Lyford replied, Working with the nice people at Neponset High School. 65 With the Enthusiasm of the 1920's Teachers Roar into the 80 s This 1920’s gang was always prepared for action within the halls of Neponset High School even though the year was 1980. Mr. Larry Weber tries his hand at this old-fashioned pump organ which was popular in the early 1900V Mr. Weber is the band and choral director at Neponset. Last year, he led the band to contest, where they received a first. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in music at Illinois State University. 66 Diagramming hasn’t changed much since the 1920’s as shown here by Mrs. Carol Gerrond. Mrs. Gerrond teaches English and serves as librarian. She received her Bachelor of Science degree at Illinois State University. Mrs. Judy Webb illustrates a trigonometry problem to her advanced math class. Being a newcomer to the teaching staff at Neponset this year. Mrs. Webb teaches the algebra classes as well as all of the junior-high math. She received her Bachelor of Science degree at Southern Illinois University. 67 I Facing a New Decade, Teachers Gear Students for the Future. Getting ready for another day’s activities, Mrs. Mary Ann Block checks the fire in the cookstove. Mrs. Block teaches home-economics, consumer economics, and health. Continuing her education, she has a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University, a Master of Science degree from Iowa State, and an Advanced Certificate from the University of Illinois. Adjusting the volleyball net for a physical education class is Mr. Larry Freeman. Even though volleyball has been played for years, the game is still popular in the 80’s. Mr. Freeman teaches American history, American government, and physical education. He is also actively involved with study halls. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Eureka College. 68 Using the chalkboard as an effective visual aid is Miss Marjorie Clark. She teaches typing, shorthand, and French. Miss Clark received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Illinois State University. Mr. Ron Easter displays some of the modernistic science equipment which is still occasionally used in laboratory experiments. Mr. Easter teaches biology and advanced science as well as junior-high science. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Eastern Illinois University. Mr. John Nell prepares his homework for the upcoming week of classes. Mr. Nell teaches geometry, general math, general business, accounting, and drivers education. He has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree, both from Western Illinois University. 69 Neponset Operates Their Own Buses for First Time Another duty assumed this year by Mr. Marshall was that of transportation director of three buses and a van. This was the first year that the Neponset School System has owned and operated their own buses; thereby providing Mr. Marshall with some new experiences— - i that of mechanic, substitute driver, sche- : 1 duler of trips, chaperone, etc. Here, he is shown with two of his drivers, Martha Herrick and Bill Woodward. Other drivers involved with transporting high school students to classes and special activities were Vivian Williamson and Janitors Preserve Helping to preserve our ''1920V’ building and make it functional for the 1980's” has been an important task of the janitors down through the years. Most of the building is still as originally constructed in 1926. Beginning their janitoral end-of-the-day” activities of cleaning are Nancy Hoslander, Germaine and Bill Brierbach. Nancy worked as a helper the first semester and Bill and Germaine completed their third year as janitors of N.H.S. Helen Williams.
