We, the Annual Staff of 1979, wish to dedicate this, the thirty-second volume of the Zephyr, to Mrs. Carol Ger-rond. Mrs. Gerrond has been teaching English at Neponset for eighteen years. Over the years she has organized and sponsored the Mask Script, produced a quantity of plays, sponsored the cheerleaders and has served as school librarian. Students elected to serve on Student Council this year included David Duff, Jay Wittmeyer, Mark Miller, Shyla Guthrie, Amy Peterson, Dan Breitbach, Debbie Schurer, Sonia Block, and Gary Mowbray. Allison can't quite believe the magic she has just seen performed. FUAAotMtu As one of their activities, FHA sponsors the school newspa per, The Track. Karen Moore, editor and her assistant Cathy Jums, edit some copy for their next issue. Sonia Block and Dawn Bennett were selected by the State Association of FHA HERO as members of the State Peet Education Team on Nutrition. As members of this team they were required to give informative presentations on nutrition to groups throughout the area. Sonia also attended the national convention held at Miami Beach in July. Tammy Bennett attempts to focus on decorating for Snowball in fulfilling part of her responsibilities as an FHA member. Home Ec. They did an excellent job, for which NHS is proud of them. Mr. Weber again directed the Nepon set High School Pep Band. They played at all home basketball games and aided the cheerleaders in the school song. The band did a fine job throughout the year. At left, Joanne Miller and Cheryl Ouart should be congratulated as they received an excellent rating for their flute duet at band contest which was held at Morrison High School. Far left, the high school band works hard at the annual Christmas Concert playing many of the popular songs in an effort to get the people in the Christmas Spirit. Mark Miller, Jay Wittmeyer, Dave Duff, Mark Claeys, Jeff Milnes, Clif Stetson, Craig Williamson, Janet Hoadley, Bob Skaggs, Mike Barnes, Terry Kopp and Steve Williamson. This year’s members participated in many sectional events including soil judging, a mechanics contest, a leadership workshop, and a Parliamentary Procedure Contest. Serving his second year as FFA sponsor is Mr. Bernhard. (This year you must visualize him without the mustache.) Steve is getting the materials ready for his tin man suit while cleaning up after Snowball. Mr. Weber points out a difficult part in the music to Soma Block, who was the piano accompanist for the chorus. Shyla Guthrie and Cheryl Laub attended contest this year and received a superior rating for their vocal duet, ‘Shepherd of Love. 18 19 Members of the chorus who attended contest this year were Mike Barnes, Craig Williamson, Soma Block, Susie Heise, Karen Moore, Shyla Guthrie. Cheryl Laub, and Melody Holocker. All the participants received good ratings and each one worked hard to receive it. These eight people presented entries as a sextet, two duets and four solos in the contest held at Morrison. Everyone seems to be amazed at Edwin’s cooking ability, but Edwin appears to have previously sam pled some uncooked cherries |ubilee. QfWits Ituwlju4 Ucmj 24 Half time entertainment at the basketball games was provided by the Pep Band, directed by Mr. Larry Weber. Another enthusiastic crowd cheering on the Zephyrs. Now you see guys, this is the way it's gonna be, says Mr. Turman, as he converses with the officials before the big game. This year we had a rematch between the Faculty and the Fathers resulting in a victory for the Faculty. Representing the Faculty was Mr. Jepson, Mr. Marshall, Russell Weber, Mr. Turnbull, Mr. Reeser, Mr. Grant, Mr. Easter, Roger Pratt, Mr. Turman, Mr. Tasker, and Mr. Kolata. The fathers were represented by: Rev. Swain, Chuck Blake, Mark Kemerling, Roger Robinson, Jim Heiser, John Monroe, and Maynard Laub. Trish Price, who made up one half of the girls track team, tries for another first in one of her many races. Trish aptly repre sented the squad in running, high-jump-mg, and broad-jumping; consequently she competed in the State Track Meet in Charleston. Again this year. Mr. Tasker gave of his time and talent to coaching the young and energetic squad Lisa and Tammy illustrate, for our benefit, the proper way to shoot a lay-up. Those receiving special awards at this year’s athletic banquet were: Lisa Laub, Girls Basketball Most Valuable Player; Heidi Peterson, Coaches Award; Debbie Schurer, Girls Most Improved Player; Doug Long, Boys Basketball Most Improved Player; and Larry Mueller, selection to the All Conference Team. 36 This is Mr. Ron Easter’s second year at Neponset High in his young teaching career. At right, he prepares an experiment for a lab session in one of his many science classes. Mr. Easter keeps very busy by also teaching and playing tennis with the students. At right he can be found inspecting the tennis courts to be sure they're in good condition. What other activities will Mr. Easter take up in the near future? This is also Mr. Mark Bernhard's second year of teaching at Neposet. He keeps the boys very busy in his agriculture classes, which are taught in the late afternoon. Part of Mr. Bernhard’s responsibilities is serving as sponsor of the Neponset FFA. Besides his duties at Neponset High, Mr. Bernhard teaches at Kewanee. to hde toudb Mrs. Mary Ann Block is always eager to help out a Home Economics student when they have a problem, whether it be sewing or cooking. In addition to her home economics classes, Mrs. Block prepares all Seniors for the outside world by teaching Consumer Economics. Miss Marjorie Clark is a very on-the-go person. She teaches French classes, business courses, is a sponsor of the Junior Class, and also serves as cheerleading sponsor. What would NHS students do if they couldn’t depend on Miss Clark to also sponsor the prominent French Club? Above, Miss Clark energetically supervises a late night cheerlead ing practice. At left, Miss Clark demonstrates the touch method of typing to her Typing I Class. 39 Teache is Mr. Roger Jepson serves as a math teacher for the High School and Grade School. Above, he simplifies an equation for his Algebra I Class. He is also the outstanding sponsor for the Senior Class. Mr. Larry Freeman is history teacher and physical education teacher. He gets his daily exercise by participating with the students during the P.E. classes. Is this his secret to staying so young? 40 Mrs. Carol Gerrond is an excellent English teacher. She also sponsors the prestigious Mask Script Club. Mrs. Gerrond works hard to get the students ready for the spring and fall plays. Playing the new tympani, Mr. Larry Weber shows his ability and partiality to music. Mr. Weber teaches students to harmonize together as they sing in the chorus and play instruments in the band. The organization of Annual Staff is headed by Mr. John Nell. Mr. Nell also teaches business and math classes. He is also kept on his toes by the future drivers of tomorrow. Is this why he knows so much about insurance.? 41 42 This is Mr. Marshall’s first year at Neponset High School. He has received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Illinois State University. Along with serving as principal, he also served as guidance counselor and sophomore class sponsor. Below, Mr. Marshall, Mrs. Easter, and Mrs. Marshall help chaperone one o the school dances. The production included scenes from three well-known plays. Preceding the plays, a delicious dinner was prepared and served by the two Home Ec. classes and their teacher, Mary Ann Block. Sonia Block, Gary Mowbray, and Brian Crofton portrayed members of the child's family, while Allison Berry played the role of teacher to the deaf child, Rachel Yepsen. Behind the kitchen doors, Mrs. Block and Larry Mueller prepare food for the dinner-theatre. Melody Holocker, Peteann Gricius, Lisa Nyert, and Diane Cowling, students of the Home Ec. classes, learned firsthand about methods of quantity cookery when they undertook this protect. 69 Providing entertainment for the 1979 Junior-Senior Prom was “Summer Breeze. Soma also received the DAR Award which is given to the senior girl who demonstrates loyalty, leader ship, and other such qualities. Peteann Gricius received the Outstanding Homemaker Award for ten semesters of Home Economics. Brian Crofton receives the Sportsmanship Award from Mr. Marshall—this award is given to the Sen •or boy or girl who shows leadership qualities. A minimum of a 4.6 average for a specified number of semesters is needed to receive the award for scholastic achievement.
