'Zepluj'is mm. . . kcu, IwCU vl 3 De itccdioi i We, the Annual Staff of 1977, dedicate Volume XXX of the Zephyr, to the Neponset basketball team, better known as the Zephyrs. For the fourth straight season, the Zephyrs were cochampions of a basketball conference. After three shares of the Little Eight Conference title, the Zephyrs were cochampions of the Bureau Valley Conference this season. These honors did not come easily. Many long hours of hard work and teamwork were necessary to achieve them. As a gesture toward this work, we find it appropriate to deicate this edition of the Zephyr to them. 4 ; • • • These trophies stimulate Mr. Freeman into reminiscing about the good ole days.” Below, Jim Heiser exhibits some of the determination and spirit the Zephyrs showed throughout the year. Welxxwo A Serving District 307 as board members for the 1976-77 school year were Edwin Heise, Dan Thurlow, Bill Guthrie, Ron Miller, Merle Moore, Jack Scott, and Martha Price. President Jack Scott reads over the agenda while Dan Thurlow and Bill Guthrie prepare for the board meeting. Mr. Delbert Camp, the District's new Superintendent, contemplates some revisions in the school schedule. In addition to being superintendent, Mr. Camp also served as the elementary school principal. Throughout the year, Mr. Camp, Mr. Dennison, and the board worked in close harmony to bring about a good and successful school year. 24 Pausing from his rigorous schedule, Mr. Dennison looks over some of his incoming mail for the day. In performing his administrative duties as principal of N . H. S . for his second year, Bruce Dennison kept things well in hand. Letter opening is just one of the many duties Dorothy Norton performs as secretary to the Superintendent. Cheerful as ever, Eveline Lyford competently assists Mr. Dennison as secretary in addition to being District treasurer. 25 Mrs. Fleming looks at a group of slides to choose some to supplement a laboratory presentation. Mrs. Mary Ann Block once more taught all home ec. classes and consumer economics. She also guided three senior girls in independent studies. The areas studied were child development, refinishing furniture, cooking, and sewing. Mrs. Block was FHA sponsor. Miss Marjorie Clark's teaching duties included Typing 1 and II, Shorthand I and II, and French I and II. As well as serving as Junior Class sponsor and French Club sponsor, she watched a study hall at the grade school. Mrs. Joyce Fleming was a new addition to the teaching staff of N.H.S. She had a very heavy schedule for a first-year teacher as she not only taught Biology I and II and advanced science at the high school, but also taught junior high science. Mrs. Fleming also sponsored the Freshman Class. 26 at M W«S. Mr. Roger Jepson also acquired leaching duties at the grade school. He taught junior high math. At N.H.S. he taught Algebra I, advanced math, and world geography. Mr. Jepson also served as Senior Class sponsor. Mr. Larry Freeman had a busy year as he taught four P.E. classes, U.S. History, World History and Health. Mr. Freeman was also Sophomore Class sponsor. Mr. John Kime continued this year to share his agricultural leaching duties with Kewanee and Neponsei. As FFA leader, Mr. Kime supervised the ag farm. Mr. Kime inspects the arc welder prior to use in class. 27 F cufty £[u tes Light Ow Tte Subj cte Mr. Weber energetically conducts the band at the High School Music Contest. Mr. John Nell taught business classes consisting of Introduction to Business, Bookkeeping I and II, as well as basic math and drivers ed. A real test of his memory was teaching Plane Geometry after a lapse of seven years. Of course Mr. Nell again served as advisor of the Zephyr. Mr. Larry Weber worked hard as band and chorus director preparing students for concerts and contests in grade school as well as high school. Mrs. Carol Gerrond taught five English classes. She also took care of the library making sure all books were in the proper places. Being advisor of Mask and Script, Mrs. Gerrond produces fall and spring plays. 28 i i This page is in memory of Nina Maes. Nina was the custodian at the high school. She was someone you could always joke around with, and she always had something cheerful to say. Nina will not be forgotten. They prepare meals for both grade and high school students. 30 Zfepfuft S RnSbY cvi fit Goty Composing Neponset High's first golf squad were Mark Mauceri, Clif Stetson, Roben Gunning, Dough Lindbeck, Ben Yepsen, Coach Roben Tasker, Many Golby, Mike Heise, Jim Heiser, Larry Mueller, and Allison Berry. Since football was discontinued, Neponset's fall spon was golf. Containing nine boys and one girl, the squad faced the incovenience of having to go to Kewanee to practice on a course. One meet was held with the Western Rams with the Zephyrs being defeated. Mr. Tasker was able to gain experience as golf coach for the first time. 32 CJ mhoAm Pwoida Varsity cheerleaders Kathy Nyert, Barb Gerrond, Teresa VanMeir, Peggy Weber, and Dena Kopp practice a cheer for the game at Tampico. Mrs. Bruce Dennison was the cheerleading sponsor for the 1976-77 year. She was of tremendous help to the squad. The cheerleaders worked hard to raffle off cakes at home basketball games to help pay the expense of cheerleading camp. The camp was held at Illinois State University in Normal in late June and early July. The girls put forth a large effort and learned much for the basketball season to make an improvement in the squads. Junior Varsity and Varsity cheerleaders Connie Davis, Crystal Stabler, Kathy Nyert, Teresa VanMeir, Dena Kopp, Allison Berry, Lisa Smith, and Barb Gerrond demonstrate the split pyramid. Trish Price was also a member of the J. V. squad. A mixture of Junior Varsity cheerleaders Peggy Weber, Allison Berry, Lisa Smith, and Barb Gerrond captivate the crowd during the game against the Wyanet Eagles. 33 epIuj'iS Aw CXbCluXlnyplOiiS Members of the Zephyr Squad were Ron Ouart, Lane Norton, Jeff Chadd, John Wall, Brad Kemerling, Walter Claeys, Dave Mueller, Dave Krahn, Mike Heise, Larry Mueller, Ben Yepsen, mgr. At right, Tom and Lauri seem stunned to find out they have been chosen King and Queen for the 1976-77 Homecoming Court. Barb tries to teach Melanie and Marcia one of her new dance steps. 44 Since there was no football at N.H.S. this year, Homecoming was held during the basketball season with the court being announced at the game on Friday, December 10. The dance was held Saturday evening, December 11. This year's theme was Island of Paradise” with the Sophomore Class providing entertainment and decorations. After just having learned they are king and queen, Tom and Lauri walk the length of the gym to greet their court. At the top, Maiden Cane, a musical group from Peoria, provides hard rock music for the informal Homecoming Dance held on Saturday evening. One of the major activities of Mask Script this year was the initiation of three new members in January when all members enjoyed a delicious pot-luck supper. Members worked hard throughout the year helping with the presentation of several plays including a Christmas play. In April, the organization enjoyed seeing ’’Annie Get Your Gun at Hall High School. 48 Why is Barb trying to straighten out Lane? Mrs. Gerrond seems to be debating whether or not this year’s initiation is too severe. Brian seems to be going through a slight change in appearance for his pan in the initiation.
