SENIORS AT WORK Above: John, Jim, and Barb demonstrate chemistry laboratory techniques for Linda. At right: Dan, Bob, and Tim explain advanced mathematics to Pam. At left: Doug, Mary, and Dawn show business methods to Carol. Below: Jay, Louise, Marilyn, and Jim make use of the library facilities. M.S. D.M. P.H. M.K. D.M. J.G. HISTORY On August 29, 1952, twenty-five eager and terrified first graders approached the Neponset Grade School. Miss Lewis guided us through our trial year. Her pupils were: Linda Burrows, Barb Carley, James Berry, Betty Carlson, John Gerrond, Tim Golby, Pam Holsclaw, Dan Gunning, Mary Kaiser, Michael Johnson, Doug Miles, Carol Miller, Jim Robinson, Marilyn Shaner, Louise Swearingen, Jay Verbout, Melvin Homback, Ronnie Humphrey, Marilyn Hecktner, Steven May, Connie Newell, Betty Jo Nanninga, Barbara Welboume, Steven Schmidt, and Sally Swearingen. During our Grade School years we gained Dawn Morris, Susan Papecek, Georgia Boehne, John Beaman, and Pat Jackson; and lost Melvin Homback, Ronnie Bumphrey, Betty Carlson, Marilyn Hecktner, Steven May, Betty Jo Nanninga, Connie Newell, Barb Welboume, Steven Schmidt, and Sally Swearingen. Teachers who guided us were: Miss Lewis, Mrs. Mock, Mrs. Gould, Mrs. Dana, Mrs. Gerrond, Mr. Slocum, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Whaples, Miss Golby, and Mr. Thompkins. On August 29, 1960, nineteen bewildered freshies entered the halls of N.H, S, After recuperating from initiation we sponsored our first real high school party--the Valentine's Party. Our president during our freshman year was Barb Carley. In our sophomore year we lost Susan Papecek and Pat Jackson, reducing our number to sixteen. Our president, John Gerrond, guided us in sponsoring the Homecoming Dance with Oriental Paradise as our theme. Our Junior year brought about a feeling of being upperclassmen. Our big project of the year was Prom. After much planning and preparation, we presented to the seniors our Deep Sea Fantasy at the Bureau County Country Club in Princeton which followed the banquet at Rici's Restaurant. Thanks to our President, Tim Golby, our class accomplished much. We also sponsored an April Fool’s Party with the Comets as our band. Seniors--seniority. Here we were at last, or already? Our main functions were to sponsor the Christmas Party, keep the underclassmen in their places, attend Prom without all the fuss, to graduate, and to have fun on our class trip. Our president was Mike Johnson, and our Homecoming Queen and King were Barb Carley and Tim Colby. We lost Linda Burrows, which dropped our number to fifteen. Teachers who guided us through our high school days were: Mrs. Chesnutt. Miss Kurtz, Mrs. Gerrond, Mrs. Lippens, Mrs. Heavner, Mrs. Pollpeter, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Luther, Mr. Boese, Mr. Ritchhart, Mr. Seymour, Mr. Luther, Mr. Freeman, Mr. Honn, Mr. Stubbs, Mr. Mellen, and Mr. Neeman. We'll not forget our custodian, George Gerrond; and secretaries, Mrs. Stetson and Mrs. Rollins. Those who graduated on May 28, 1964 were: Jim Berry, Barb Carley, John Gerrond, Pam Holsclaw, Mike Johnson, Mary Kaiser, Doug Miles, Dawn Morris, Carol Miller, Jim Robinson, Marilyn Shaner, Louise Swearingen, Jay Verbout, Tim Golby, and Dan Gunning. PROPHECY This is station WIRX coming to you from Neponset, Illinois. Today we are granting the request of Mr. Larry Freeman, coach at Neponset High School. Mr. Freeman wants to look in the Grow Up Globe to find out what happened to the 1964 graduates of Neponset High. So without further ado, we will tune in these fine people. First and foremost on our list is Daniel Eugene Gunning. Looking in our globe, we see that Dan is a mild mannered sanitary engineer of the Handy Dandy Garbage Service. In his spare time Mr. Gunning goes around performing feats of strength and daring in the disguise of SUPER TANK who can leap the tallest building in a single bound. Second is Miss Louise Swearingen. We aren't getting very good reception on our globe because Louise is so far away. She is now in Rome participating in the Olympics. Miss Swearingen is representing the United States in the ladies' cross-country race. She has won a gold medal in every race in which she has run. For a hobby Louise raises greyhound race dogs and operates a bookie joint on the sly. I am sure the class would be very proud of John Gerrond, better known in society circles as Jacque Geront, the world-famous ballet dancer. When not rehearsing for ballet he donates his time to teach high school girls the manly art of self-defense. Mr. Freeman is surprised to learn that Carol Miller is a bunny in a Playboy Club. This club along with several others is owned by James Wendell Berry. Mr. Berry has found this to be an entertaining and profitable business. Next we will tune in California on our Grow Up Globe. Mary Kaiser has landed the job of Tinkerbell at Disneyland. Every night she can be seen as she flies down from Matterhorn Mountain. Jim Robinson is still studying at the University of Illinois. During his first ten years of college there, he perfected a new technique for growing telephone poles. He is an extremely fast worker so he also packs roads with his 12 by l's. Mr. Freeman chuckled when he found out that Pam Holsclaw owns an alligator farm in Florida. Miss Holsclaw very obligingly wrestles five hundred pound alligators for all spectators. During her leisure hours she is a professional bubble bubble blower on the Lawrence Welk Show. I wonder if the rest of the class knows about Bob Johnson. He can now be seen in Tarzan movies swinging through the trees and wahooing. Mr. Johnson worked for eleven years to develop his muscles so he could fulfill his lifelong desire. The Grow Up Globe shows us that Dawn Morris is now living in Los Angeles where she manages an Old Ladies Home. Miss Morris cooks, cleans, and nurses for her boarders and enjoys the work because she loves doing for others. Dawn’s hobby is driving in stock car races. She and her ladies do all the work on the cars. I can’t seem to get all of Miss Carley on the Globe. She has gained quite a bit of weight. Barbara tips the scales at a dainty two hundred and fifty pounds. She is the star performer at the Metropolitan Opera House. When not singing, Miss Carley is the chief food sampler for Betty Crocker cake mixes. Jay Verbout manufactures bird houses under the brand name of Jay Bird. He is also President of the local Bird Watcher's Society. For his good deeds he shoots owls and stuffs them for the F.F. A. Tim Golby is busy at his job now. Because of his mathematical mind he has achieved the important position of head raisin counter for Post Raisin Bran. Fifty-four for regular boxes and nine hundred and ninety-nine for king-size boxes. At this moment Miss Shaner is leading a safari across Africa. She generally makes five trips each year and loses an average of three people on each trip. However, no one is allowed to shoot the animals. Doug Miles is the last person on our list. He is a pizza pie flipper in his shop, The Pizza Shack. He can be seen in the window flipping pizza after pizza after pizza. At night Doug plays the guitar in the local hootenannies. Thank you for your request Mr. Freeman and thank you in radio land for listening. This is your friendly announcer, William Mellen, saying good NIGHT.! POEM We’re the class of ’64; The teachers here will curse no more. Behind us are 12 years of knowledge; Now we're set to enter college. But, first, before we have to go, We want Neponset folks to know About each pupil in this class-Every lad and every lass! Alphabetically prepared, A stanza for each student’s shared. Henry Longfellows we are not. So, please, don’t laugh if something doesn't rhyme. Jim Berry is a friendly lad-Always smiling, never sad. At dances known as swivel-hips, Jim's always glad to take a tip. Barb Carley also graduates; For college days she cannot wait. As reigning Queen she's shed some tears; Good luck to her in future years. Tall John Gerrond will be missed After high school is dismissed. Toward college John has turned his eye; The world will look when he walks by. Center on the football team; Public speaking with a gleam. Of course, you know who this must be, Tim Golby's the celebrity. Dan Gunning is intelligent; Many hoi rs on studies spent. Athletics were his high aim; He’s sure to gain himself much fame. Pam Holsclaw is a friendly girl. Glad to give the boys a whirl, With pen or pencil she can draw Anything without a flaw. Bob Johnson is quite studious; He’s taught us to be dutious”; Never shirking, ne’er a tear. He was our President this year. Mary Kaiser is quite smart-She knows studies like an art. In any field she will succeed Through life’s parade she’s sure to lead Lefty is a Senior, too. (Doug Miles as he’s known to you.) He used to be a real clown. But, someone really tamed him down. Carol Miller is attractive; In band and chorus she is active. Her grades reveal she gave her all-in future years she will not fall. Dawn Morris is a lot of fun; To keep her pace one has to run. Neatness is a trait of hers Which will show through in future years Jim Robinson is quite a guy-We doubt if he will go awry. Figures are his interest- But, these as numerals are dressed. Marilyn Shaner is quite sweet-For one fine boy she’s left her feet. The last 12 years have flown quite fast. And college days are here at last. Louise is everybody’s friend; She will help you to the end. Many pranks she has displayed-And many teachers she has grayed. Jay Verbout’s an athlete- None but sports can quite compete. For college he is set to go So future years will make him dough. The class of '64 unfurled To take their place out in the world. Though each will separate in life, They’ll each find happiness-not strife. Today we follow, tomorrow we lead. ’’ This has been our Senior creed. Do good things--we know we should; Then N. H, S. has done some good. Our coach is quite a funny guy-Always clever, sometimes shy. Two years as sponsor of our gang Has taught us to respect his fang. WILL We, the Senior Class of 1964, being of sound mind and body, do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament. The Faculty: To Mr. Honn, our principal, we will that look of being busy during seventh hour Study Hall. To Mr. Luther we leave all the tools we've misplaced. To Mrs. Gerrond we will all those long discussions in English. We'll never forget some of those questions. To Mr. Freeman we will a six-foot-nine, two hundred and eighty pounds freshman boy for winning football and basketball teams. To Mrs. Pollpeter we will a volleyball so she can practice. To Mrs. Heavner we give the messes we left in the kitchen. To Mr. Mellen we leave those sour notes we somehow played. To Mrs. Rollins we will all the times we wanted to get in the office and couldn't. To Mr. Gerrond, our janitor, we leave the crumpled papers behind the radiators: oh, and George, there's one mouse behind there which you may also keep. The Underclassmen: To the Freshmen we will our ability to get along with one another and have fun. To the Sophomores we give our good (?) grades. To the Juniors we will our ways to earn money as easily as possible. Individual Necessities: JIM BERRY wills his weekends in Kewanee to Brad Currier. Take care Brad! BARB CARLEY leaves her flirting ability to Pat Brady. TIM GOLBY leaves his speaking abilities to Nancy Jackson. JOHN GERROND wills his height to Marlis Hepner. Remember to duck, Marlis! DAN GUNNING gives his abilities in sports to Dennis Jackson. PAM HOLSCLAW leaves her wig to Myma Burnett. We have noticed she likes a change now and then. MARY KAISER wills her contact lenses to Mike Berry. BOB JOHNSON wills his truck to LeRoy Dana. Take it easy in Kewanee for that truck has quite a reputation. DOUG MILES leaves his carefree attitude to Ron Gerard. CAROL MILLER leaves her ability to get along with her boyfriend to Kathy Berry. Good luck Kathy. DAWN wills her complaining attitude to Celia Wood. JIM ROBINSON wills his size twelve Weberly boots to Sherry Williamson. Don’t trip. Sherry. MARILYN SHANER leaves her cheerleading talents to Becky Hood. LOUISE SWEARINGEN leaves her ability to giggle at any time or place to Sherry Stabler. JAY VERBOUT leaves his artistic talents to John Kares; maybe he'll be another Rembrandt. In witness hereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures to this last will and testament of the Senior Class of Neponset High School on this twenty-eighth day of May, nineteen hundred and sixty-four. Witnessed by: John Gerrond Carol Miller Jim Robinson Jim Berry CLASS OF 1964 Our View Fun in Chicago The Wardens = At 6:00 A.M., June 1, 1964, the Senior Class left by train for a class trip to Chicago. The group was chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Gerrond. By ten o'clock we were settled in our rooms at the Sherman House. Then we left for lunch and the Museum of Science and Industry. Upon our return we relaxed and got ready to go to the Boulevarde Room at the Conrad Hilton for dining and dancing. We also enjoyed a splendid floor-show of dancers, ice skaters, and a sound-effects comedian. On Tuesday, eight of us went to the Breakfast Club. The show was taped for broadcasting on Wednesday. The afternoon was free time. Some went shopping and others saw a movie. For supper all went to a Chinese restaurant. After this different” meal, we saw the musical Comedy How to Succeed in Business Without Really The Long, Tall, Cool One Trying . After having checked out of the hotel, on our third and final day, we went to Riverview. We arrived back in Kewanee by train at 8 o'clock P. M. All had an unforgettable experience which we enjoyed VERY much. Many thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Gerrond for a job much appreciated.
