Opportunity Award Band Award Citizenship Award Sportsmanship Award 43 HISTORY On August 31, 1951, 21 students were beginning their first exciting year of school. It was a real adventure to go into that big, new building. Those who were beginning the first grade were LaVeme Bennett, Ronnie Brady, Ronnie Bumphrey, Carolyn Cinnamon, Michael Coates, Ronnie Foes, Janice Foltz, James Homback, Melvin Homback, Fred Mahler, Gary Miles, Scott Myers, Ronald Nash, Judith Pratt, Jimmy Scott, Larry Stabler, Nancy Stetson, Judy Williams, Marilyn Wolf, and Roger Yordy. Our teacher was Miss Lewis. We surely liked our kiss from her each night. In 1952 we entered second grade with only 17 in our class. Sharon Ford was included. Our teacher was Mrs. Mock. We left Dehind Melvin Homback and Ronnie Bumphrey. Loretta and Janice Foltz had moved during the summer. During the year Roger Yordy moved to Ann aw an and Sharon Ford to California. Diana Peve was also a member of our class for a short time. At the end of the year there were 14 of us. In 1953 we entered the third grade with Mrs. Gould as our teacher. We shared a room with the fourth grade. Paula Maas joined our class but Jimmy Scott moved. In 1954 we began fourth grade with Mrs. Dana as our teacher. We only numbered 13 since Paula Maas had moved. Gary Sutton came and left during the year leaving our class still with lucky 13. In 1955 we began fifth grade with the same 13. Mr. Slocum and Mrs. Gerrond were our teachers. Jerry Hollis came from Toulon, making our class total 14 again. In 1956 we had departmental work in the upper grades. Mrs. Brown was our homeroom teacher. During the summer of 1957 Marilyn Wolf moved to LaMoille and James Harnback moved to Kewanee. In 1957 we entered seventh grade with 12 members. Mrs. Whaples was our homeroom teacher. Judine Betz moved here from Bradford and Jerry Hollis moved away, reducing our roll to 12 again. In 1958, as we enrolled in the eighth grade, we had only 11 students; Judy Pratt had moved to Galesburg during the summer. Our homeroom teacher was Miss Golby. There were seven boys and four girls at the end of our grade school years. On a sunny fall day in 1960, eleven terrified freshmen entered the big door at Neponset High School. Our class members LaVeme Bennett, Ron Brady, Mike Coates, Ron Foes, Judine Betz, Carolyn Cinnamon, Judy Williams, Nancy Stetson, Larry Stabler, Ron Nash, and Fred Mahler, survived initiation with our nightware on display for the whole student body. We sold Christmas cards for our money-making project with assistance from our advisors, Mr. Lentz and Mr. Ritehhart. Next fall we returned to N.H.S. finding ourselves promoted to sophomores. Our homecoming dance was a big success after the victory game. A large crowd danced at our Hawaiian Holiday with Mr. Boese and Mr. Ritchhart as sponsors. Judine Betz did not join us that year, leaving 10 mischievious students to disect worms! The next year we were finally upperclassmen. Losing Mike Coates and adding to the class Amie Cordrey, Toby Salter, and Don Martin, we tried to be good juniors. During the first semester we lost Toby, and at the middle of the semester we lost Fred Mahler, leaving 10 of us to give the seniors a wonderful Arabian Night, with a great deal of help from Mrs. Gerrond, our prom advisor. Coming back as seniors, we had only 8 class members, and Mr. Freeman was our advisor. Don Martin and Amie Cordrey did not return to N.H.S. The eight of us who finished our senior year had struggled through all twelve years together. This year we found Judy Williams and Larry Stabler as our Homecoming Royalty. The last few weeks of school were left and excitement was in view. Graduation, prom, addressing announcements, and fitting caps and gowns. With a tear in our eye, and a smile on our face we left the familiar brick building—Neponset High School—with fond memories of the best years of our lives. 44 PROPHECY Ron Foes and I were on our way to our annual millionaire bachelor's convention in our airemobile. As we were flying to our destination, one of our jet engines began to cut out. We decided to make an emergency landing. Our Airemobile came to rest in a cow pasture near the village of Neponset. We went for assistance to a near by farmer's house. From the knock at the door to our surprise appeared an old former classmate, Larry Stabler. We struck up a conversation and he told us about his wife and ten children and also that he made his entire living on a thirty-two acre farm. Larry drove us to the local Airemobile Sales and Service in Neponset. We were greeted at the secretarial desk by a luscious blonde. While waiting for the chief engineer in charge of repairs, LaVeme Bennett, Ron Foes was trying to make time with the secretary and found out that this gorgeous creature was Nancy (the wild mouse) Stetson. Ron asked Nancy how she attained her great beauty and she told him it was by eating vitamin enriched potato chips and by drinking large amounts of pepsi flavored Geritol. After sending LaVeme and his understudies to repair our airemobile, we decided to take a taxi and look around on our old stomping grounds. We hailed a taxi and told the driver to just ride around. Ron whispered to me for some strange reason the driver looked familiar. I looked again. I could also see a strange resemblence. Finally we couldn't stand it any longer and asked the driver who he was and he told us that he was Ron Brady. I asked Ron what he was doing driving a taxi and he said that he owned several taxi services throughout the area and was driving this taxi because one of his men was sick. Ron asked us if we had seen any of our old classmates and we told him that we had seen everybody but Judy Williams and Carolyn Cinnamon. Ron told us that Judy had married a general in the Air Force and they were both training as scientists for explorational flights to Venus to take scientific data on how the Ventian people live. Just at that moment our taxi was speeding by the new Paradise night club. We stopped and went back and Ron told us to read the signboard out front. It said that Carolyn (Red) Cinnamon was starring in tonight's grand opening. Ron told us that she is a wonderful singer and she sometimes has a different act. We toured the rest of Neponset stopping to talk to old friends but time finally ran out so we directed Ron to take us to our airemobile. LaVeme was making a final inspection of his mechanic's work and told us everything was back in good shape. We boarded our craft and bid old Neponset farewell and departed for our convention. 45 POEM Although our class is very small, There is much that can be said About the members, one and all, Who, down life's path now must tread. We started out with many more, But now we number only eight. To great heights we hope to soar, Though we can't predeict our fate. Mouse is what we call this girl, But Nancy is her name Her hair used to be BROWN curls, Now, the color's not the same. C.L.C. is next in line And Moose has staked his claim. We all think she's mighty fine And know she deserves great fame. Judy is the last girl on our list, She knows what SHE'S going to do. Around Neponset she'll sure be missed, After she heads south—to E.I.U. 'Ron' was the name in '45, How we got three, HEAVEN knows! A sharp '57 Chevy one does drive, You must know by now, that's Foes. Our president is also a 'Ron,' He is one of the Bradys. And when his actor's garb he dons, He thrills all the young ladies. Last, but not least, is Ron Nash In basketball and football he is tops. Plus, of course, the hundred yard dash, And, over the hurdles he also hops. Scurve is what we call THIS lad, Though he's also known as Vern. You rarely ever see him mad, And, for a movin' Chevy he does yearn Chalk it up is an expression That is often heard from Larry. And, WE get the impression He is fond of a gal named Mary. This poem had not made us wiser, But,--Stop! Wait! We almost forgot To include our senior adviser--Coach, thanks a lot! ! This poem's done, we've had a ball, We tried our very best. Next year we'll miss you, one and all, But, most of all, old N.H.S. 46 We, the Senior Class, of 1963, being of sound mind and body, do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament. JUDY WILLIAMS wills her little black book to LINDA BURROWS. Linda needs to meet some new boys. Judy also leaves her good grades to DAWN MOORIS. Could you use them Dawn? RON NASH leaves his writing ability to CAROL MILLER and his long hair to GREG STETSON. Greg, I think Ron uses Greasy Kid's Stuff. CAROLYN CINNAMON wills her driving ability (?) to LEROY DANA. She also leaves her shyness to BECKY HOLMES. RON FOES wills his hair bleach and blonde rinse to MIKE JOHNSON. We think Mike will look sharp as a blonde. Ron also leaves his used automobiles to JIM BERRY. NANCY MOUSE STETSON wills her bermuda shorts to DAN GUNNING. Nancy would like the 1963-1964 basketball team to have her rebounding ability. LAVERNE BENNETT leaves his broad shoulders to BRAD CURRIER. We hope Brad can hold them up. LaVerne also wills his ability to attract women to DON HODGETT. Watch out girls! RON BRADY wills his swine project to PAM HOLSCLAW. He also leaves his ability to get along with teachers to DOUG MILES. I, LARRY STABLER, will my curly hair to DENNIS JACKSON. I also leave my knack for quarreling with my girl friend to JOHN GERROND. The Class of '63 leaves a two-way intercom to MRS. GERROND. It will be connected to the teachers' lounge and the bookkeeping room. To MR. FREEMAN we will all our failing grades in World History and a year's supply of salt tablets. MR. NEEMAN is to receive a case of blanks and a box of broken pencils which he can throw in study hall. To MRS. LUTHER we will a load of racks which we picked up from the strip mine so she can have a rock garden. To MR. LUTHER we leave all the unread magazines and newspapers and a load of rocks from the strip mine. To MR. BOESE we will a can of putty and a piece of sandpaper for the desks we autographed. MRS. POLLPETER is to receive a cedar lined box for her gym shoes and a handbook of P.E. exercises. The Class leaves all the silence needed for 8th hour study hall to MRS. HEAVNER. We also leave her all the messes we left in the kitchen. To MRS. STETSON we leave all the problems we have caused her in the last four years. We will MR. HONN all the excuses we have used; most of them are outdated. To GEORGE we will a new mop for the boys' rest room and a large supply of paper wads from behind the radiators in study hall. Our class wills the way we work (?) and get along as a class and our whole spirit in general to the JUNIORS. To the UNDERCLASSMEN we will our ability to stay up nights. To STUDY, that is. And, to the BOARD OF EDUCATION, we leave all the co-operation we received.
