CLASS OFFICERS, (left to right): John Verbout, Vice-President; Connie Stabler, Treasurer; Bob Ver-Heecke, President; Mr. Luther, Advisor; Susan Pletkovich, Secretary. 10 History of the Class of 1962 On September 1st, in the year nineteen hundred fifty, twenty-six wide-eyed little girls and boys were waiting to be greeted by Miss Lewis. Diana Dana, Lee Bennett, Rose Marie Golby, Lois Miller, Virginia Miller, Lee Stabler, John Verbout, and Jim Thorp have been with the class for twelve years. Due to the large number in the second grade, our class was divided. Mrs. Mock and Miss Lewis were our teachers. James Homback, Fredrick Mahler, Deana Tankersly, Kateena Tankersly, Jeannie Lath-rop, and Robert Ogburn joined us. We lost Janice Foltz. Mrs. Mock instructed us in the third grade. Here we lost Grant Miles, Jeannie Lathrop, La Verne Bennett, and Lawrence Bartman. Harold and Alvey Pevy joined us for a short time. Mrs. Gould guided us through the fourth grade. Dorothy Daniels, Charles Hansen, Betty Low, Robert Ogbum, Harold and Alvey Pevy, and Linda Swearingen dropped from the roll. Veronica Larimer, Vicky Morris, and Barbara Burcham transferred to our school. This gave us a class enrollment of seventeen. During the fifth grade, Veronica Larimer and Connie Stabler moved away. Mrs. Gerrond and Mr. Slocum were our teachers. Sharon Hollis and Susan Pletkovich entered our class in sixth grade. Mrs. Berry was our home room teacher. In the seventh grade we became very popular and added Mary Lou Boehne, Clarence Rednour, James Evans, Connie Stabler, and Melanie Holmes. We were sorry to lose Tommy Willhite and Sharon Hollis. Mrs. Whaples was our teacher. Then on the 28th of May, 1958, we were ready to leave Grade School and Miss Golby, who had been our eighth grade teacher. We looked back on many good memories, but we were looking forward to even more. In 1958, we timidly entered High School as freshies. We all survived the initiation, even the sack dresses furnished by the Purina Feed Company and the feminine apparel worn by the boys. Mrs. Ches-nutt, Mrs. Culp, and Miss McKie were our sponsors. Our president was Barbara Burcham. James Evans and Mary Lou Boehne left us. After a quick summer we went back as sophomores. This year, Mrs. Chesnutt and Mr. Seymour were our sponsors. Our president was Connie Stabler. We decorated the gym for Homecoming with the theme Deep Sea Paradise. Judy Jefferies and Amie Cordrey, who had joined us at the beginning of our Freshman year, now left us at the end of our sophomore year. Now another summer had gone by and this one was even shorter. We had the same sponsors as before, but our president was Phyllis Hepner. She did a good job organizing the Prom, which was our big event of the year. Bob Ver Heecke joined us in March. Finally our senior year, which we thought would never come, crept upon us. All of a sudden we became very busy with many activities. We had Mr. Luther to guide us and Bob Ver Heecke, our president, helped him. This year we worked hard to make money for our annual and our class trip. All of our projects were successful. Our Senior Class Play was The Inner Willy. It was a lot of work and fun and we wish to thank Mrs. Gerrond, our director. There were just the last few weeks of school left, with graduation invitations to be addressed, caps, gowns, finals, Baccalaureate, and then the big night--Commencement. We realized we were through and it was all over except for the memories. We wish to thank everyone for twelve successful years in the Neponset schools. 11 SENIOR CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1962, being of sound mind and body do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament. TO THE FACULTY: To Mr. Lavelle, the principal: All the unheeded advice he gave us during our four years at N.H.S., and he can keep all the clothes from our lockers too. To Mr. Luther, our sponsor and Ag teacher: All the left over N.H.S. Weekly's. To Mrs. Heavner, Mrs. Lippens, and Mrs. Walker our Home Ec. teachers: The girls wish to give them all the dirty towels from P.E. class. The boys leave their left over pizza mix boxes. To Mr. Freeman, our Coach: The stinky yellow bus rides. To Mrs. Gerrond, the English teacher: All the make-up from the Senior Play and the interesting talks in class. To Mrs. Luther, our chemistry teacher: Her lab technique and all her easy methods for remembering things. To Mr. Boese, the Math teacher: A net under the balcony to prevent his falling again. To Mr. Stubbs, our beloved music teacher: The memory of the Senior musicians, all eight girls and the single Senior boy. To Mrs. Stetson, our faithful secretary: All those late slips that weren't reported. TO THE UNDERCLASSMEN: To the Freshmen: The ability to stick with school till you are Seniors and graduate. To the Sophomores: We will to you, Mr. Freeman, our history teacher, and any old history papers you might need. To the Juniors: The ambition to work for your class. THE SENIORS LEAVE BEHIND THESE NECESSITIES TO THE UNDERCLASSMEN: Diana Dana, her ability to get by with skipping school to Dawn, Pam, and Linda. Clarence Rednour, his deep, romantic voice to Le Roy Dana. Connie Stabler, wills her hot Chevy to Ron Foes. Lois Miller gives her comb and mirror to Mr. Lavelle. Brad Berry wills his comb to Julie Gotheridge and his Marlboro's to Mike Johnson. Lee Stabler gives his cute, curly locks to Linda Stetson. John Verbout wills his athletic ability to Barbara Miller. Melanie Holmes lends her bright red blushes to Jon Pickering. Virginia Miller extends her 55 volumes of notes to Pat Jackson. Vicky Morris wills her blond hair to Ron Nash and her bow and arrows to Jill Hill. Rosie Golby wills her quietness to Amie Cordrey. You need it, don't you, Amie? Phyllis Hepner leaves her earth-shattering sneeze to Judy Williams. Susie Pletkovich wills her legs to Nancy Stetson. Barb Burcham leaves her KILT to Larry Evans. Lee Bennett wills his size 12 cowboy boots to Dennis Jackson. Bob Ver Heecke gives his ability to get along with Susie to Vern Bennett, so he can get along with Carol. Jim Thorp wills his ability to keep his car locked to Larry Stabler. Witnesses: Connie Stabler Barb Burcham Vicky Morris 13 CLASS TRIP TO BARABOO WISCONSIN After a weeks rest we were all looking forward to our class trip which we had been planning for all year. We left Neponset at six o'clock Friday morning June first. Cars, driven by Bob Ver Heeche, Lee Bennett, and Mr. Stubbs, were our means of transportation. Our first stop was the Cave of the Mounds in Blue Mounds Wisconsin. This was quite an experience for us who had never been in a cave. Little Norway was our next stop. Here we saw many things that were used in the pioneer days when the people came from Norway. We arrived at the Farm Kitchen about three thirty. Our first adventure was a horseback ride through the winding, woody trails of Wisconsin. When we came home to the Farm Kitchen and cleaned up for dinner some of us were too sore to sit down. After dinner the girls went to see the show State Fair while the boys proceeded to scout around. Everyone was up bright and early Saturday as we were going to the Dells. First thing was the boat trip through the upper Dells. For lunch we had a picnic. Then we proceeded to Fort Dells. Here Mrs. Stubbs was given a little puppy. Whew! The day is That evening we enjoyed playing eighteen holes of minature golf and a short drive to the lake. Later that night a pizza party was given in one of the cottages. Sunday morning some of us went to church. After lunch we went back to the Dells for a ride on the Ducks. which proved to be a rather wet trip. In the evening we went to the show and afterwards had another part Monday morning everyone slept lat' it was our last day together. In the afternoon we wf to Devil's Lake for swimming and boating. On the v 1 home we stopped in Baraboo to do a little shopping. After supper we started home for Illinois. We arrived home early the following morning tired but happy with many pleasant memories. What's under our bed? over Sleeping Beauty Got it fixed Lee? Pizza is fattening girls! Can't a guy fix his Camera? Getting ready to go somewhere? What is the matter Connie? Surprise! ! SENIOR CLASS POEM This poem has been a fantastic job, Parts of it will make you sob. But it has its laughs and giggles too, So here's our poem for sixty-two. On his Triumph he does speed; To all the kids he's known as Deed. For three long years he ran around, Until a freshman tamed him down. To be a nurse is Phyllis' goal, She's always on the honor roll. She plays the flute with the greatest ease, And to our class she adds prestige. The D.A.R. is Connie's cla?m; to go to Northern is her aim. She's got a lot of friends we know, And Bobby Bennett is her beau. He's president of the Senior class; In Ag. he always wins the brass. This young lad's known as Robert V., And his steady's name is Susie P. Jim Thorp drives a bright red Merc, And from his job he'll never shirk. He's taken math for four years now; He'll be an engineer - - - and how! When it comes to acting she can't be beat; The clarinet she plays quite neat. With these two lines it's plain to see, That this girls' name is Susie P. Good grades are Virginia's main concern; When it comes to books she wants to learn. A Western lad was her first steady. For college we all know she's ready. The U. of I. will receive this gal; Barbara's her name and Connie's her pal. Her scholastic average is very high, And her favorite dish is a pizza pie. Vicki's the worker in our group; She carries on when others droop. To our band she adds the beat, Because she plays the drum so neat. Clarence Rednour is his name. Through Mr. L. he'll reach his fame. During games he really roots; Around the school we call him Scoots. After school Diana does scoot To Peterson's to earn some loot. In band she plays the clarinet; A secretary she'll be, we bet. Melanie Holmes is quite a poet; Just ask Verbout—he'll say, I know it. For four years now she's cheered the team; Everyone knows how she can scream. These last few lines for Brad are saved; All this year his car he's craved. To traffic cops he throws a scare— Look out Sioux Falls, you'd better beware! John Verbout is this lad's name; In basketball he won much fame. He's the tallest boy in the Senior class, And he's always seen with a certain lass. Now you've heard this bunch of junk. In poetry, of course, we flunk. Well, it's our poem and we are proud, But we shouldn't have read it quite so loud. Rosie's always quiet and shy, But she catches Larry's eye. This year she's head of the F.H.A. As a homemaker, she'll go a long, long way. Lee's gridiron number was thirty-eight. As a football player he's really great! His good physique is hard to beat, From his big, strong arms to his tremendous feet. Lois was our Homecoming queen; She makes the most of being a teen. In plays she is the flirty lass. We're glad to have her in our class. Written by: John Verbout Melanie Holmes Susie Pletkovich Bob Ver Heecke 16 Graduation Salutatorian Valedictorian J.V. Cheerleaders 58-59 Exploring??? Waiting for something PROPHECY FOR CLASS OF 1962 In May of 1982, I was to be in Neponset for a convention at the Aeromobile Manufacturing Company. On my way through Wisconsin, I thought that I would stop at Madison and see Bob Ver Heecke, who was the head dairy technician at the University of Wisconsin. As I arrived he had just finished the first synthetic cow. This model would produce two hundred gallons of milk per day through the use of chemicals. He said that the Dairy Breeders Association was very sore at him for his invention. Within the next two years he hopes to revolutionize the milk industry with his cow. I left Madison and headed south. About half way to Janesville, Wisconsin, I was passed by a red streak. For several miles, I wondered what it could have been. Then I found out, for directly in front of me, with a flat tire, was the strange looking car. It was like no other car I had ever seen before, but the name was familiar, Chevrolet. I thought that I recognized the driver so I stopped. He turned out to be an old classmate of mine, Brad Berry, who now worked as chief test driver in the experimental division of Chevrolet and General Motors. He had just arrived in Janesville to run a series of tests on a new sport model that G.M.C. was going to bring out on the market next year. It is to have the biggest engine ever sold stock in an automobile. He said that it would be able to go at least 175 miles per hour. I asked Brad what Lee Stabler was doing now and he said that Lee was in charge of the NASA project at Edwards Air Force Base. Lee has been working on the proposed first manned rocket plane trip to Mars. When I arrived in Neponset, I had two days before the convention opened, so I thought that I would see if any of my other classmates were still around. I drove out to the Bennett residence to see if Lee was still around. As I got out of my car in front of a big, office-like building, I read a sign that said, Bennett Bros, Farms, Inc. Inside I found Lee hard at work pulling levers and pushing buttons. I later found he had been doing his chores. As we talked, Lee continued to push buttons and throw switches. He said that farming two thousand acres was a snap for three people. After we had been talking for an hour, he said that he had plowed about sixty acres with his electronic plow. As I left Lee's office, I passed Connie Stabler, who is the Bennett Brothers private secretary. She told me that Melanie was working as a model in New York. Phyllis and Rose Marie were both working at the Neponset Institute of Chemical Technology. They have been working on the problem of placement for the nuclear power plant that is to be put into operation at Neponset in the next few months. That afternoon I had an appointment at the bank, which to my amazement had moved into the building which had served as the old Neponset High School in 1962. The present school is now on what we called the Mart Gunning farm. It has also taken in several other schools who couldn't meet the minimum enrollment required by the state. There are over one thousand students going to N.H.S. At the bank, I met the head of the Accounting Department, John Verbout. He took me through the building showing me his office, which was the old Study Hall, where the business machines and computers were kept, which was the gym, and the vault, which was the Ag shop until it was remodeled and fortified. Back in John's office, I met another classmate, Vicky Morris. She is employed as a secretary in the Accounting Department. John asked me if I could give him a lift over to the Neponset Fender and Body Shop, where Clarence Rednour was fixing his car. Clarence, it seems, had bought Ed's Repair Shop and turned it into a body shop. Since he first started in the business, he has been forced to expand several times to meet the needs of the public. As I walked through the new business district, I decided to buy some gifts for a friend. I stopped at what appeared to be one of the better department stores in town. As I talked to a sales girl, the store's owner, Barb Burcham, came up to me and introduced herself. Barb said that she bought the store about ten years ago and had since expanded into several shopping centers around Neponset. She said that her head designer, Virginia Miller, had just left for Paris that morning to buy a new line of stock. I asked Barb if she ever heard from any of the kids who had moved away, and she told me that she had heard Sue Pletkovich was in Egypt. She was on an expedition to find one of the lost tombs in the land of the Pharaoh's. As I drove around town, I couldn't believe my eyes. The factories and other big businesses that had come into town since I had left! There was a huge housing project south of the old town site that spread out over several miles. The business district took in almost forty blocks in the center of town and there were also several shopping centers in the suburbs. At the close of my first day in Neponset, I decided to attend a concert to be given by the Neponset Philharmonic. The concert was to be given in the slightly enlarged old Scott Park. The park now takes up about ten acres. To my surprise, the famous concert pianist, Miss Lois Miller, was to give a recital that evening. Unfortunately, a sudden cloudburst canceled the performance. The day after the convention closed, I stopped in at Martin Engineering Company to see if anyone I knew was still there. I found Diana Dana was still employed there. She had advanced since I had worked there; she was Vice President and General Manager of the firm. After having spent better than a week in Neponset, and since the convention had closed, I headed back to my job as consulting engineer at Douglas Aircraft Corporation. Football — ’61 The 1961 football season marked the first time in 20 years that Neponset High fielded an eleven-man squad. Despite the fact that only 20 players were available and adjustments had to be made to the eleven-man game, the team developed rapidly and came through with 3 wins and 4 losses. Missing will be Lee Bennett, captain and fullback, who turned in fine offensive and defensive plays all season and was awarded Little Eight honorable mention foV his efforts. Also Brad Berry, end; John Verbout, end; and Jim Thorp, tackle; who worked hard for the team this year. Returning lettermen who will be ready for action when the whistle blows next fall are Ron Nash and Dan Gunning, who received special mention conference honors and LaVem Bennett, who was outstanding on defense. Also returning will be Larry Stabler, Ron Foes, and John Kares. Around these veterans and with some new faces from the freshman and sophomore classes, our new coach this year, Mr. Freeman, hopes to build a winning team. Complete scores are listed below.
