Jim Hill, senior class president in '61, acted as master of ceremonies. Each of the members present was asked by Hill to give a brief account of their present vocation. Larry Pratt said that he is now working as a rocket engineer. His latest feat was the landing of a manned rocket on the moon. Louise McKie told us that she is employed as a marine biologist by the government. Audrey Bennett now lives in Miami, where she cares for her 3 year old son and her 30 year old husband. In her spare time she works as a receptionist in her husband's clinic or helps to organize new charities for needy groups. Robert Berry is living in Oklahoma, on 600 acres of oil wells, with his wife and three children. David Cannon, also the owner of some oil wells, runs a chain of oil stations in Saudi, Arabia, where he lives with his harem of exotic women, whose many talents are--censored. Mary Carlson is now employed as Mrs. John Bennett, and is at work raising tax deductions for her farming husband. Dave Dana is a specialist at Peterson, and is married to the former Nita Gingrich. They have four lovely children. Les Dahl is a sergeant in the intelligence branch of the army. Susan Gerrond is a professor of child development at the University of Neponset. Bob Bennett now farms 800 acres of the finest land in Northern Illinois. He is engaged to a young woman he met at the International Stock Show. Bill Holmes, who is a regular playboy himself, designs bedrooms for Playboy Magazine. Marilyn Papacek works as an interior decorator for her husband, who is an architect. Bob Rejlenius is a doctor of psychology, and recently married the young socialite, Lydie Bird Johnson, daughter of ex-vice president, Johnson. Allie Rednour is the Bureau County Home Advisor. She just returned from four years of work at the University of Hawaii. Mary Swearingen is now the head chemist for the Dupont Synthetic Fabric Corporation. Pat Stetson writes editorials for the Democrat Bulletin, when she can spare the time away from her farmer husband, who lives in Southern Illinois. Because of a new arrival to the family, Pat couldn’t make it. so her husband, who was present, gave this account of her activities. Jerry Swearingen is making a career of the air force, where he is a mechanic. Jim Hill closed the program by saying he was now a buyer of men's clothing for a large firm in Chicago. 15 Young Love Monkeys? SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the year nineteen hundred and forty-nine, the Neponset School System got its first look at the Class of 1961. The long awaited first grade became a reality. A new building was waiting for us. Miss Lewis had the honor of being our first teacher. Of the eighteen boys and girls who started first grade, there were ten who completed all twelve years together. They are Audrey Bennett, David Cannon, David Dana, Susan Gerrond, Jim Hill, Louise McKie, Larry Pratt, Marilyn Papacek, Bob Redenius, and Pat Stetson. Mary Swearingen, Les Dahl, and Jerry Swearingen have been with us except for a few months. Mary Carlson has been with us for nine years. Lee Bennett, Tommy Davidson, Charles Hechtner, Patsy Stout and Sterling Thompson were also present in the first grade. In our second grade, we lost Lee Bennett, Tommy Davidson, and Sterling Thompson, and Mary Carlson. We gained Mary Low and Sandra Swearingen. Mrs. Mock was our teacher. Mrs. Gould guided us in the third grade. Robert Lynn Berry, Mary Carlson, and Freddie Craig joined us. Patsy Stout left us. Mrs. Gould also led us in the fourth grade. Freddie Craig disappeared from our group. Mrs. Hazel Berry greeted our fifth grade class. To this class we added Beverly Maas and Robert Sellon, Charles Hechtner, Mary Low, and Sandra Swearingen left us. Mrs. Berry was also our sixth grade teacher. Mary Carlson and Beverly Maas were not present to be greeted this year. Our seventh grade teacher was Mrs. Edith Whaples. Bobby Bennett was the new man to join us and Bob Sellon set out on a different course. One find day in May of 1957, our group finished eighth grade. Miss Golby was our teacher who helped us finish grade school. We were joined by Mary Carlson, Allie Rednour, Les Dahl, and Bill Holmes during this year. Many other hands guided our way during this period, (1949-57). Miss Golby, Mrs. Whaples, and Mr. Paul Slocum were our principals. Custodians were Mr. Frank Stout, Mr. George Gerrond, and Mr. Tom Bigham. Athletic directors were Mr. George Gerrond and Mr. Paul Slocum. Music and operetta directors were Miss Shirley Stabler, Miss Jeanette Miller, Mrs. Gene Kessler, Mrs. Besse Heck, and Mrs. John Gerrond. Band directors included Miss Miller, Mrs. Kessler, Mrs. Heck, Mr. Edward Skwierawski, Mrs. L. Renner, and Mr. Howard Sundland. School board members were Marvin Kuster, Theron Lyle, Dr. Wm. Bertelsen, Tom Studley, Cecil Cinnamon, Ralph Stabler, Wilbur Blake, Joseph Papacek, Charles Wood, Willard Stabler, and Dean Scott. 18 Moments we remember are of the many parties, band contests, Christmas and Spring Operettas, basketball, track, and cheerleading. These moments were made into memories as Mr. Floyd French spoke at our graduation. --Farewell, grade school. In 1957, we advanced to high school. We were eighteen terrified freshmen; however, we survived the book-carrying routines and penny pushing contests, along with the other initiation stunts, and held our first election. The winning candidates were Bob Redenius, president; Bill Holmes, vice-president; Les Dahl, secretary-treasurer; and Pat Stetson, reporter; with Mrs. Kathryn Crowson as sponsor. We held an all school Valentine's Party that year. After an all too fast summer, we found ourselves sophomores. Mrs. Arlene Molinerola and Mr. Vernon Luther took the sponsorship of our class. The big wheel of the class was Jim Hill, spare tire was Larry Pratt, minute girl was Marilyn Papacek, money spender was Susan Gerrond, and columnist, Audrey Bennett. The Homecoming Dance was our big project for the year. Another summer, even shorter, and we were juniors--upperclassmen, with all the rights of upperclassmen. Mrs. Molinerola and Mr. Luther took over as sponsors again. The students who ruled the roost were Susan Gerrond, president; Pat Stetson, vice-president; Bill Holmes, secretary; and Mary Swearingen, treasurer. The Junior-Senior Prom was the highlight of the year. We used Evening in Paris as our theme. Then came the big year, after a long wait,--or was it short? We became seniors. The activities piled up furiously! Under the guidance of the class officers, Jim Hill, Larry Pratt, Marilyn Papacek, Pat Stetson, and our sponsors, Mr. Luther, Mrs. Perry, Miss Kurz, and Mr. Lavelle, our year rolled along smoothly. We had to start to raise money for our annual and class trip; so we undertook several projects, most of which were successful to a high degree. We will always remember the magazine and candy sales. At our senior dance we honored the parents of the entire student body. The senior play, Bull In the China Shop, was a lot of work, but we also had fun. Our sincere thanks go to Mrs. Chesnutt, our director. Then came those hectic last weeks,--caps and gowns, finals, and addressing our graduation invitations. Finally, Baccalaureate, and then Commencement, one following on the heels of the other. And the realization struck us--we were through! As we leave the neat brick building on Harlan Street, we wish to thank all our teachers, from first grade through twelfth. 19 GRADU A T T H E S T A T I O N CLASS TRIP MAY 30, TO JUNE 2, 1961 o N O u R W A Y READY OR NOT? HOME We left Kewanee on the train at 6:23 in the morning, May 30. We arrived in Chicago at 8:30 at the Union Depot. A taxi ride to the Hotel Sherman followed. After we had unpacked and looked around the hotel, we took the subway to the Museum of Science and Industry. Afterwards, it was back to the hotel where we dressed for our evening on the town. Then it was off to supper at the Forum Cafeteria and to the Show Mein Kamp. After the show we looked the big city over for a while and then went back to the hotel, to bed after our first day on the town. Wednesday morning we went to the Art Institute. It rained in the afternoon so we split up and some went to the zoo as planned while others went to the Prudential Building and some took in the show Gone With The Wind. That evening we met for dinner at Hoe Sai Gai and experienced some Chinese food. The evening entertainment consisted of seeing a Broadway stage hit Gypsy, starring Ethel Merman. We started out on the new month the next morning with a visit to Maxwell Street, saw many bargains but we were tight with the few dollars we had left. In the afternoon we had some free time and we took in various sights in The Loop. For dinner we went to the La Siesta Restaurant and ate Mexican Tacos, mixed feelings about the food. Then we went by bus to Riverview for an evening of thrilling rides and entertainment. Our last day was mostly free of sightseeing so we went out to get rid of the money we had left over????? At 3:00 we left for the depot and home with many memories of our four days together in the Windy City and the realization that this was our last time together, as a class. Wc would all like to join in thanking Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ger-rond for giving up their time to chaperone our trip. WE HAD A BALL! THE HOTEL AWAY SWEET Maxwell Street Comfty Boys? They couldn't quite get up enough steam in time to win. Their win and loss record was perfect for the en tire season--all losses. But the members of the team tried their best this year, underfreighted and inexperienced for the most part. The bench warmers of this season supplied support and spirit, and all the boys tried their best. Each year the Neponset Chapter enters the Programs of Work Contest which consists of an organized schedule of activities to provide learning situations. The first activity in June was the attendance by sophomores at the State FFA Convention at Spring-field at which John Scott was awarded the State Farmer Degree. During the Summer, Members had a swimming Party, judged fat stock and dairy cattle and exhibited beef and hog project at the FFA fair. In September the Neponset FFA was host to 20 Section III FFA Chapter at a leadership school. Senior FFA members attended the International Livestock Show in Chicago in November and spent a weekend in Wisconsin touring Wisconsin dairy farm and other points of interest. The officers attended the section III banquet on February 16. David Cannon applied for the State Farmer Degree and Ronald Brady took part in the section III Public Speaking contest April 5. The annual Father and Son banquet was held in May with a Steak fry put on by the members. Neponset FFA members also conducted many other local activities during the year. The largest is the operation of a 7 acre Vo. Ag. Farm near the High School and the rehabilitation 70 acres of Strip Mine Spoils. They also had a local traitor rodeo, greenhand dinner, honored local farmers, entertained at a Farm Frolic and entered the corn growing contest.
